Glad to have more Picardo. So does that also mean Alara will still be on the how? Because when the first season was airing, there was talk about her actress leaving after it was done. Was that just [citation needed] gossip?

New characters.
>Recurring stars including Norm Macdonald as engineer Lieutenant Yaphit, Victor Garber as Admiral Halsey and Chad Coleman as Bortus's mate Klyden will also feature in season two, as well as Rachael MacFarlane as the voice of the USS Orville's computer.
>Gossip Girl and Shameless star Jessica Szohr has become the first new addition to the cast of Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville, with the actress signing on as a series regular for the show’s second season.
>The Orville has added actor Chris Johnson to the cast in a recurring role in the show's second season. Johnson will play a new character on the ship, but no further details were provided according to Deadline. Johnson's credits include roles in the film 47 Meters Down and on television shows like The Vampire Diaries, Chicago Fire, and Betrayal.

>Picardo played the Emergency Medical Hologram called The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager. He appeared in a first season episode of The Orville as the father of The Orville's chief security officer, Lt. Alara Kitan.
>Assistant costume designer Ivy Thaide shared a photo to Instagram of the call sheet for the show's first episode. TrekMovie noticed that the sheet’s header lists Star Trek alum Joe Menosky as a co-executive producer.
>Menosky was a prolific Star Trek franchise writer in the 1990s, with over 50 credits across Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager. He is probably best known for writing “Darmok,” one of the most memorable episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. More recently he worked on Star Trek: Discovery, co-writing the episode “Lethe” with Ted Sullivan. Menonsky has apparently jumped over to The Orville since then.

The humor is a bit cringey, especially at first, but as the show goes on the comedy is played down in favor of just being a Trek show. According to MacFarlane that trend will continue to Season 2 as well. Definitely worth a watch.

There's a reason why fans liked this/critics hated it over STD which critics loved but fans ignored. It's a better trek parody than an actual trek series airing at the same time.

Are there still many people that put stock in what what most critics would say nowadays? Genuinely asking here, since I have not read or watched what critics spew out of their piehole, "professional" or e-celeb level in a long while, in general I equate any media critics in current year era lower than /tv/ and video games journo scumbags.
And I'm not a fan of MacFarlane either, but holy shit how badly out of touch are the STD producers when a parody done by someone else seem to have a better understanding of Trek than oh wait never mind. I just remembered >>21215.

I believe every single person who's started watching The Orville has said that. Only the STD shills on reddit and that Trekforum deny it. But yeah, it really is shocking. Really shows you what some passion and love in a project can give you. Also, with STD I have little hope of it getting better, but with The Orville I am very optimistic.

That's because The Orville was supposed to be a Star Trek spin off. MacFarlane pitched his show to CBS a few years ago but they rejected it and ordered a season of STD instead.
The Orville is made by people who love science fiction and escapism while STD is made by people who give no shit about Trek but needed an well-established franchise to push their agenda.

And Seth is known to be a massive Trekkie, so not only does he want it to be an authentic experience, he hired alot of people who worked on the main line series like Enterprise and DS9 and that ensures a quality the likes that STD can't get. It might be painted up as Star Trek but all the fans know that the spirit of the series is with the Orville.

I thought the "extra" episode from this year was scrapped because they were only going to play it if they didn't get a second season, as it involved Alara dying and other plans that wouldn't work with a continuation. Or are they filming an entirely new episode using budget that was earmarked for the cancelled one?

i dunno. i don't have a good feeling about Alara. It could be that the leftover episode is her departure that they're going ahead with, but weren't sure about last season. The new confirmed character seems to be a drop-in replacement (Salayan security officer) - although with a different name so obviously not a simple re-cast. If "Talla Keyali" was supposed to be a regular guest role, it could be a rival for Alara from a different ship or any number of things, but it doesn't look that way. She appears to be a new regular cast member. Picardo's returning guest role could simply be for the funeral or departure as well.

It's looking more and more like Alara was simply re-cast with a somewhat older actress (who has worked with Seth before and is rumored to be more stable and easier to work with) and the leaked name for her new character is fake and simply there to maintain deniability until the premier. …At least, that's my theory because what we know so far doesn't entirely make sense otherwise.

Speaking as someone who was in a studio when latex was being applied over hair, I can completely understand.
It's hard on the SFX guy, it's hard on the actor, it's hard on the director, and it looks like absolute shit onscreen. It takes about an hour and a half to put on or take off, so if the actor has to do another take on short notice the entire PRODUCTION is stopped.
There's a reason why star trek avoided it, if they ever covered hair it was with a full face mask that was a bit hotter, but could be taken off and put on easier.

>while exact details have not been released about the second season of The Orville, it is clear that a significant amount of progress is being made. For example, it was confirmed that the sixth episode of the season finished filming in May of 2018, which was followed by a break for the cast and crew. Something that was useful because the lack of breaks in the first season created serious time pressure on them.

New stuff on Orville, even if it's 3 weeks old. They'll be at Comic-con for a Panel, Alara's actress has joined another show and might be shelved/killed off while they bring in that new acress as another security officer.

Seth is like that in real life, he doesn't act he just shows up and talks. Even his jokes are improv, which is why he bombs sometimes.

no idea what they're planning with Alara after seeing the trailer. She's on the poster and in the trailer heavily but you can also see the new season 2 salayan character in several scenes including at Alara's station on the bridge. Blogs are still reporting her by name as well.
It doesn't appear that they're in any shots together, though, so who knows. They also have noticably different hair styles. It just looks like they're trolling the fans for fun. Overall, the season looks good, but it's going to live or die based on quality of the individual stories themselves. There was no comedy in the trailer apart from quips, which is fine and if they limit it to that in the show going forward i'm ok with it. I don't want a total parody anyway. I'm ok with a light-hearted, brightly-colored classic planet-of-the-week adventure series, basically an optimistic, outer-space version of MASH. I like how all the cast and crew look like they're happy, too. It probably helps that they don't take it completely seriously and they know they're not just copying Star Trek.

She was supposed to die in the episode that got shelved by the production and Fox (it was written as a series finale because they weren't expecting to get a new season) but now that the show is a succes I doubt they'll kill Alara. She might be away for a bunch of episodes since I think the actress got a role on another show. I'm sure it will be something like the Crusher/Pulaski situation on TNG.

I think they just don't care about the well-established characters, to them there's only Burnham and the extras on the bridge. See the recent announcement about nuSpock in STD, how he will be different than the one in The Cage.
Rumors say that Kurtzman wants to put STD into the Kelvin timeline but even that would go against the canon from the JJ movies.

I'm getting more and more impressed with Seth Macfarlane's executive-producer skills. He knows how to both recruit talent, and then get out of the way while said talent does their jobs. The project is his baby but he has the self-discipline to not micromanage everything. That's worthy of respect.

As for The Orville it also does something kind of comfy. The Orville, the ship, is a workhorse ship. Basically a frigate. There's nothing really remarkable or special to it. It's not even a Cruiser like the Connie was. It's just there to do it's dirty jobs and keep things running. It's sort of like if you watched TNG but instead of it focusing on the Enterprise you instead followed the adventures of a crew of an old battered Miranda Class, or to put it bluntly it's the Chief O'Brien of Starships not married ot Keiko of course so no needless suffering It's a babies first command for a ship and the comfiness of that is going to become more apparent in the long run.

I've always thought that trek would work better following around some middle-of-the-road ship instead of Mary Sue-ing whatever vessel the crew happened to be on (which might have been less of an issue with TOS but it was definitely there with Enterprise-D, Defiant, and Voyager). It would have less suspension of disbelief whenever the crew or the ship get BTFO, and gives a plausible explanation for why they're doing something utterly routine such as ferrying an ambassador from one planet to another. Otherwise, we're forced to assume that the Federation's foremost vessel can be crippled by two decades-old BoPs with skeleton crews and is constantly called back from its mission of exploration to play mailman to some colonists.

The decision to make the Orville a middling vessel was wise and reflects a love for the genre and an emphasis on character over sexed-up hype. Ironically for The Orville, it was a very mature decision. It's a very classic move, which informed TOS, but every Trek since then ignores this to one extent or another.
TNG, being a victim of the 80's and its initial status as a differentiated "spinoff" instead of a direct continuation, goes full retard. DS9 halfway gets it right, but fucks-up with the Defiant. VOY is ultra-mega-retard with whiz-bangotry as were the TNG films and ENT was just incompetent and i'm not really sure what they were going for. However - and this has been posted in other threads - but TNG ends up being very lampshade-able with an interesting twist if you look at the Enterprise-Ds entire ~10-year lifespan as an extended shake-down of an unproven vessel with sketchy technology. The writers (probably accidentally) rescued themselves from "Mary Sue" accusations by having the ship (and it's sister ship) malfunctioning on a regular basis.
Essentially, the entirety of TNG is from the point-of-view of a rather unreliable narrator. They're not necessarily the best or most capable ship or crew. It's a flagship withoutout a flag officer for a reason. Namely, it's overly-complex and unreliable compared to other heavy cruisers still in service like Excelsior or Ambassador-class. It doesn't explain every bit of stupidity and it hardly makes TNG a more endearing show, but it's light years better than a mary-sue ship.

yeah, i wouldnt want to diminish TNG and i'm generally not down with "subversion" (even though thats sort of what lampshading TNG's status does) but they'd have to dial-back the holodeck since in retrospect it was a tad bit OP and a bit of a writer's crutch. That's as good a reason as any since it's objectively true. FWIW, i don't think the holodeck was supposed to be that powerful and convincing, despite what we saw. Minuette had the effect she had for a reason. I think it's just a case of the writers failing to show us the limitations early and often and then getting carried-away later on with the capabilities.

I finally got around to finishing up S1 a week or so ago (I stopped at Krill so Majority Rule was my first episode upon getting back to it). Kind of glad I waited since that means I don't have as long until S2 starts. Personal favorite episodes would be About a Girl, Krill, Majority Rule, and Into the Fold; I'm enjoying especially how Isaac's character is developing.
Honestly, I'm still pretty surprised at how much I enjoy the show when I was prepared to write it off when it was first announced. I'm even more surprised that my parents enjoy it, considering they avoid pretty much everything Seth does like the plague. Here's hoping that Fox gives them the greenlight for more seasons, since this is filling the Trek-shaped hole that nu-Trek completely fails to.

The shitposters drive away good posters, then the shitposters get bored and leave and you end up with a dead board. I'll probably check back once season 2 of Orville starts, maybe having something new to talk about will encourage some decent discussion.

Yes, god yes.
I'm not a fan of Seth McFarlane but he's a massive trekkie, has respect for the source material and brought ST alums onto the show to direct and right. First 3 are a little rough but after that it gets good, my favorite is ep 6 titled "Krill", they sneak onto an enemy warship to recover a religious text to their society but then find out they're up to something nefarious.
There's a reason why critics didn't like it but fans did. There is some of Seth's jokes in there but it is good sci-fi most of the time. Hell, I've been posting news about it for the last 6 months because this trek parody is more trek than and actual trek show of STD.

Fortunately, according to him there's going to be less comedy and more trek-style stuff from here on out. And I'll admit, his style is very hit-or-miss, but there's some good stuff in this show even on the comedy side. Example: Isaac, the not-Data of the cast, is trying to learn the nature of practical jokes. His attempt at a practical joke is to cut off the leg of a crewmember in his sleep and hide it in a ventilation staff.

if you're in a world where legs can be regrown it total could qualify as practical joke. Specially if you follow it up with a joke like "I just wanted to show X that he didn't have a leg to stand on in this argument"

Looks promising. The fact that they only put a couple joke-ish lines in the trailer suggests they're moving forward on the idea that this is a Trek show that is occasionally funny, rather than a pure comedy, which bodes well for the future.

Alara was in the trailer too though. This is still very confusing, but I hope it's not a permanent replacement and just a case of her actor being tied up with something else, kinda like how George Takei was missing from half of TOS S2 so they brought in Chekov.

could be that they didn't know if they were losing her or not and when so they wrote Season 2 assuming she'd be there and brought in a clone to cover whatever they didn't have her for. Making her an obvious clone is just the show acknowledging the weirdness to the audience. Just my guess, though.

The critical reception of Orville is just another reason to ignore (((critics))). It really triggered them and huge majority of critics completely ignored it that Orville is actually quite true to ethos of Trek despite being parody.
>Genuinely asking here
Critics completely trashed Orville based on 3rd episode, they gave first three episodes for media as pre-release review package. It tackles social issues. Gender and creating conflict between doing what you think is right and respecting another culture. It caused contradiction in liberal programming as liberals are supposed to do both but they end up having to choose one of 'em.

Also fox is selling merch of the show, t-shirts and stuff. There's a Union t-shirt with a logo where the Fed one should be and I think that looks good. And I only just found out that back in January they made a companion book of S1, 160 pages of behind the scenes and stuff.

The main character is a white male cuck who gets BLUED by his wife's boyfriend . The physically strongest character is a female, whose chief personality flaw is not believing how amazing she is. The smartest character is black (after the robot, I guess). The dumbest character is a fucking white male. The wise earthy doctor is a black woman, and she don't need no man. And gay black trannies.
It seems like it would be Current Year-compliant. What's missing? Luckily, we have STD as a reference point. What is the function of art and entertainment in our time if not to usher in the new, final era of humanity – the cosmopolitan utopia that our wives' grandchildren will enjoy?
What I really want to know is how they can set an episode on Planet Reddit and not properly address the elephant in the room that is Reddit's ugly history of providing a platform for racism and misogyny. Apparently the show is set in a future where gamergate never happened.

>There will, however, be a new character: Talla Keyali played by Jessica Szohr, who (like Kitan) is also Xelayan and a security officer on board the USS Orville. Sage was in production on the Netflix film Last Summer during much of the time the second season of The Orville was being shot, and it isn’t clear at this time if she will return to the show. Details on how they’ll transition between Alara and Talla are unknown, but speaking to TrekMovie at SDCC executive producer David A. Goodman said, “I think you are going to be intrigued to see what we do with both of those characters. I don’t want to spoil it, but it is unexpected.”
Okay, so I guess they're gonna make it so that Alara's species can switch bodies or metamorphos into a different form or some shit, and we'll end up with basically the same character but with a different less cute face.
Still hoping they'll bring back Alara fully, but who knows.

I just finished re-watching the show in expectation of the second season.
I honestly can't believe how good the show is. There's some humour that falls flat, but apart from that, it's fantastic. There are interesting and varied characters, but not just that, the characters feel *real*, like actual people with their own desires and flaws. The plots are interesting and engaging, with ideas that make social commentary but still have a good time doing so. Like that episode with the voting on people. When I first watched it I thought it was a plot worthy of Black Mirror (and later watched Black Mirror S3 and realised it had the same idea). The effects are good, the worldbuilding is decent (hopefully it will develop more in further seasons) and the ship just feels alive with people going about their business.
