If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.

i mean they have some deceptive people in their governments, and whoever's in charge usually has a bit too much power (although considering he can have all his power taken away in a simple duel, it's fair)
but it's still a lot better than the federation, if the maquis were klingons the empire would have just given them a free pass rather than going out of their way to stop them

If the Maquis had been Klingons the colonists would have had a few million re-enforcements with a full fleet a few days after the first shots had been fired.

Because they behave more like their ancestors, their evolutionary past, not like the federation that thinks 'Oh we have evolved so much in 2k years' while they haven't, they are still in the evolutionary sense cave-men. The Klingons embrace their past and can better anticipate other beings, HOWEVER this influences their society which is expressed as build-in mechanisms that leaves their society brittle for internal conflict.

You're mostly right, though I would add a few things. One of the biggest cultural differences between Humans and Klingons, and the main reason why Klingons have maintained such a large and formidable empire is because, unlike the Humans, Klingons hold no illusions about the necessity of conflict and competition. Klingons understand that war and the fight for land and resources, is an inevitable occurrence and a force of nature that exists throughout the universe, regardless of race, class, nation, or species. The Federation is built on the idealistic view (a view shared by many misguided, wannabe communists today) that if they give out enough hugs and well-wishes, that everyone become friends and share everything and no one will ever suffer again. The Klingons, on the other hand, live in the real world. They realize that people, whether from their province or another, their world or another, will always be drawn to competition. Competition over land, competition over resources, competition over mates, it is a natural part of biological life. They also understand that hardship breeds character, and without hardship, they become too weak and frail to survive in an unforgiving galaxy. They know that no matter how they may try, they can never change the nature of the universe, so rather than fighting it, or merely accepting it, they embrace it. They have chosen to maintain traditions in which the young and old alike are encouraged to find joy in battle and contest. Martial arts, war games, and bat'leth tournaments are all celebrated customs of Klingon life. It teaches the young to be ready for the battles that life will inevitably throw at them, and reminds the elders what life is all about. They understand that life is not simply given away, you must stake your claim to it, and when it is time to die, you must do so on your feet, with a weapon in your hands, lest you be remembered as a coward who could not face the challenges of life.
Klingons are a race of warriors because life is a battle, against your enemies, against the elements, and against your own demons. That is why the Klingon Empire will live through the ages, even when the other powers of the alpha quadrant fall to dust.

You know after reading up the alleged lore behind the first contact between the Klingons and the Federation it seems that the Klingons actually only struck out after being provoked into doing so. The Federation had expanded too close to their borders. Seems the Klingons were content to give their neighbours more than enough breathing room but Feds kept advancing closer and trying to get overly friendly with the Klingons. Like that annoying fatgirl who fancies you but won't get the message you aren't interested in her.
Really why are the Klingons almost always said to be hotheads yet they seem to be the only race to show tremendous restraint and above all, common sense?

>internal conflict
Like >>3084 points out klingons embrace conflict, and ideally that internal conflict would keep their government strong by culling the weak and corrupt. However their archaic government system seems to have done the opposite, if the shit we see them pulling in TNG is any indication. It's those klingons who aren't concerned with honor who bring the whole Empire down. Ideally, if they really were all "honorable" (which would imply honest), they'd be a better ally and a more potent enemy than the Federation. But just like humans they get desperate and they cheat.

Klingons live have selfdestructive civil wars and are lead by the corrupt, lazy and weak. Just look at that kid the Duras sisters try to make head of the council.
The problem is that the klingons aren't lead by the strongest, brightest or best among their numbers, but by the aristocrats who head a handful of families, who where born into wealth and power games and intrigue between said families.
Mind you, ritual duels to the death and killingprowess tend to be poor ways to determine which beraucrats are best at their jobs let alone who would be the better political administrator. All it does it make it easy to replace the one you have.
It would probably be more efficient to just use cybernetic implants to connect everyone to some kind of central computer so everyone can have an equal say in every decision made by the collective…

This competitive nature is called a "dominance hirearchy" and exists in all animals that live in groups. ALL of them.
Even lobsters, which only accidentally live in groups.
This is because, while for solitary animals 100% of the environment is composed of physical stuff, for group-living animals 90% of the environment is the group itself. So they evolve to have their "compete" circuit constantly turned on, while solitary animals only have their compete circuit tripped during mating time or when starving.
Since most humanoid species in trek are group-living, it stands to reason they all evolved a permanent-on competitive instinct, which would be applied to competition with other sentient beings. Ferengi compete with capitalism, Cardassians with colonialism, Romulans with backstabbing, and Klingons with war.
That's why these species are the fucking best in trek, because they're realistic. Rest of species act unnaturally at times, like their compete circuit is off, which we (the viewers) can't quite wrap our brains around.

Actually one of the biggest reasons communism will never work is because while some of it's goals are not that unreasonable, communism's beliefs alienate anyone that would actually be able to accomplish those goals. For example everyone starves because the people who are the best farmers/food producers often only are good at it because they are very independently minded. If they didn't desire to be independent of others for food they wouldn't bother making there own. Communism was designed to fail.

Like another anon pointed out In the Cunto thread of all places, while Klingons are most definitely competitive, much of their "Hurr, big dumb warrior, muh honorubru" is just a meme. The quality of their ships show they have very good engineers and scientists, along with the continued relevance of their cloaking device (this is assuming that there's a constant arms race going on, with the feds developing sensors while the Klingons and Romulans find new ways to defeat them). They're always on top of interstellar affairs, too, suggesting top-tier intelligence too. When Sisko asked Martok for intel on the Maquis cloaking devices or whatever, Martok just has to glance at a data pad, and he has all the info he wants, plus a bit extra.
But in spite of this, no one else in the quadrant sees anything except the dumb, inflexible warriors. Klingons are the fucking masters of meme magic.

I think pretty much all of them. By DS9 he's probably become a meme throughout the Empire. "Tryhard fed guy" or something similar. You can see it Gowrons amusement when he approaches Worf in that show, the way he acts and the look on his face can easily be translated as "Holy shit, I'm here talking to fucking Tryhard Fed Guy because he might actually be useful now! Yeah. His bro was beginning to make up for Worf's sins, and even got onto the high council. That showed Gowron that the Mogh boys weren't all bad, once they get away from the Federation's soy replicators. He even took pity on Worf and offered him a chance in the Empire, and killing Cardies to boot. But the eternal Worf threw that opportunity away, shat on Gowron, shat on his brother, and shat on his father's legacy just so he could keep playing klingaboo.

I'm willing to overlook those because the Ferengi have gone through a couple retcons. But even losing to Ferengi isn't as shameful as losing to barrels.

Yep, this holds true even in the current Gamma Quadrant expansion, as far as we can see so far. J'mpok pulling back/being hesitant to commit rescources to save an enemy (a former one at least) when the quadrant should be licking its wounds for a few decades after the game's events is one of few evidences of actual consequences on the world, and I can only hope Starfleet jumping in head first is more of them showing the same arrogance and stupidity they have before.

Actually his reply was something like "it IS sex, but I have no place for it in my life"
Ofcourse he got over that when troi bated her eyelashes and never looked back all the way through ds9

Their one dimensional "dumb hulking brute" image is part of their power. They come off as so stupidly militant that no one expects brilliance. Klingon guile at it's finest.

I've actually now watched pretty much all of Trek now except that one that won't be mentioned
I kind of want to know where the impression of Klingons being savages comes from. They are anything but.
In TOS they are cunning warriors that are more reliant on their brains than their brawn. They also plan long term more so than short term with remarkable patience shown. Their relation also with the Federation is a weird one of mutual respect despite being enemies; you get the feeling that if the Federation was attacked the Klingons would come to the Federation's aid if only for the sole reason that nobody should be allowed to kill the Federation but them.
In TNG it's a mixed bag although again in most cases Klingons are shown to be exceptionally clever and cunning. Kurn alone pulls off feats of tactical genius but other Klingons also show their technical prowness.
In DS9 they seem to be underestimated at every opportunity. They crack codes that not even the Obsidian Order at the height of their power could crack, hold insanely accurate intel on Cardassian weapons facilities that nobody thought could be discovered, have insanely good warships to the point their Battlecruisers can maneuver like Escorts, and are able to hold the entire Dominion at bay alone outnumbered 20:1.
In VOY they not only manage to break free of the Borg Collective but successfully hijack a Borg Sphere.
ENT they very much an arrogant race overly confident on their superiority of others although they can be reasoned with. They are far more concerned with their own internal troubles than that of outsiders.

It's a meme created by normalfags who may or may not have seen the show, but don't really understand at a level that a true fan would. It's like the pervasive meme that Kirk was massive horndog who slept with every alien woman and female suboridinate he came in contact with, but in actuality he only had romantic inclinations with 2 or 3 of them.
In my view, Klingons are exceptionally strong and cunning warriors, but are hamstrung by their own internal politics and rigid adherence to their honor code, leading them to be manipulated by others such as the Romulans and the Dominion into doing their bidding.

Klingons though were right to conquer Cardassia. In an alt future where the Warcriminal Sisko died the Klingons took over DS9 and the Dominion NEVER invaded.
