So /ratanon/, what animes do you like? Which ones do you think are a good fit for the rationalist-adjacent community, and why?

Pic naturally related.

This thread took longer to appear than expected, and that show took even less time to appear in it than expected.

Given the small cross-section, this thread seems hard to post in anonymously. Fuck it.

Shin Sekai Yori is pretty cool sci-fi; shame about the budget. Eve no Jikan is just plain great. Mm, delicious antiCGfag tears. Serial Experiments Lain is overrated. Fine, but overrated.

Mostly the things I like that mark me as rationalist/adjacent and the things I like in the anime I rate most highly are orthogonal.

I mean, there's anime that I'd like to share with My Tribe (and bad anime that I will insist is good), but rationalist-specific recommendations tend towards "it's good, fun, smart, and it maybe vaguely touches on subjects relevant to LW/SSC interests (e.g. 'there's some transhumanism')", or just two or three of those. Doesn't seem specific enough to be naming any as material for rationalist/adjacents. Anyone ITT ready to make a case for why their show is "rationalist material" or whatever?

And then meanwhile the shows I actually really like just have cute girls being moe and ambiguously lesbian. Watch Kiniro Mosaic, it's good for what ails you.

What I'm curious about is the whole "Anime Nazi" thing (who variously may be literal Nazis or just some flavour of NRx/WN/alt-right). (NB afaik most anime fans aren't conservative and most right-winger aren't anime fans, but there seems to be more overlap than you'd naively expect).

On a superficial level, anime tends to be quite "degenerate", so you wouldn't think it would appeal to social conservatives. On the other hand, I think there's a deeper vein of Japanese social conservatism running underneath the T&A. Sure, there's boob grabbing, homosexuals actual or implied, etc. But the yuri is usually either left implied or portrayed as perverted, girls tend to show an exaggerated degree of modesty (which the show is still letting the audience see them), etc.

Anime is also mostly portraying a racially and culturally homogeneous society.

Indeed, the people hanging out on 2ch are also stereotypically awkward anime otaku, as well as nazis, and I don't think 2ch was an anime thing to begin with?

I think this is a demographic thing: much anime is marketed to the NEET crowd, who are feeling generally disaffected with their life. ("single childless men who masturbate to anime"). Lonely single young men is also exactly the demographic who join extreme political movements, become terrorists or rebels or suicide bombers, etc.

Meanwhile, give them a job, a wife, and a few kids, and they will start voting for centrist candidates. And probably lose interest in the loli fanservice shows.

Some anime definitely have traditional values, for example:

>Planetes

Exploring space is for men, waifus should stay home and faithfully wait 10 years for their husbands to come back from space exploration

>Persona 4

You may think you want to choose your own life but really you should just take over your parent's job

>Welcome to the NHK

The only cure for hikikomori is taking over your parent's job

>Psycho Pass

a dictatorship of cyborg psychopaths is still better than letting filthy immigrants steal our superoats.

>Death Note

someone acting as judge and jury and handing out death sentences for minor crimes is actually not that bad as a form of society, the only real objection we have is that it's against the rules.

I'm bisexual and I dream of the day people once again understand the point that post is presenting, however…

Everybody lost their minds! Which is understandable and not entirely the fault of the left like the author says. His vision of deviancy as taboo and something to be done in private is perfect but that's not how it worked for a lot of people, like Turing.

The "right" overreacts with appalling results as much as the left does, christianity is far from having a healthy relationship with sexuality, not only when it comes to deviancy, they also get modesty wrong (Sinfully wrong!) and many more things.

The second you start castrating homosexuals, being disquieted by human nudity or just rejecting pleasure and sensuality as something essentially bad, you are as stupid as the faggots trying to "get married", the trannies asking for special pronouns and all that crowd.

The East (Indian tradition, for example) should serve as our inspiration, not the things that led us to this sad situation in the first place.

While this would seem to align SEELE with Arab states rather than Jews, if one takes the conspiratorial worldview that, in fact, the great conspiracy (Jewish, UN, Masonic, whatever) controls everything, then of course they also orchestrate the world’s wars over scarce resources. SEELE is as much behind Saudi Arabia and Iran as it is behind Israel.

Is this paragraph a Freudian slip revealing too much about his ideal society?

>To mix fictional metaphors a bit, I am reminded of the Borg from the Star Trek franchise. In one episode of, I believe, The Next Generation, several members of the crew find that they can, if they are discreet and quiet, move unmolested through a Borg ship, though they are in plain view of numerous Borg drones. The Borg, it turns out, are interested in assimilation at a civilizational level, not an individual level. Thus, if an individual, or even a very small group, moves through their ship and seems to present no threat, they are ignored. Below a certain level of prominence, they are simply not worth doing anything about.

>>6535

>The homosexuality in anime like Tiger and Bunny has nothing to do with leftism.

Homosexuality is only linked to leftism through Westernization anyway. The entire premise that homosexuality = antitraditionalism is predicated on the idea that all traditions are broadly similar to the Western Christian one.

It's weird how the smartest group falls prey to the equality myth. Moldbug was a lot closer to the truth than most of those that came after him, since he's entirely comfortable with the idea of making Obama CEO of America. Joke's on you, I did actually watch dubbed Cowboy Bebop, because the torrent was the dual audio and it defaulted to English.

I endured 12 entire seconds of dialogue because I'd heard the Cowboy Bebop dub was really good. I'm not going to make that mistake again when I watch Big O.

I have recently realized that I simply accepted the default opinion about Cowboy Bebop's Japanese voice acting, which is strange because I don't like dubs. Cowboy Bebop just has a different mood in Japanese. Spike is not quite the same person. He isn't as perky. However, that does not make the Japanese voice acting worse.

Do Fullmetal Alchemist and Big O have famously good dubs like Bebop?

Bebop's dub is watchable. It's not good. I don't know how anyone can endure Faye's English voice for more than 30 seconds.

I think people call it good because they only care about Spike's sexy voice, maybe Jet's.

A rule I follow is to default to the language the characters should be speaking in-story.

So you watch Big O and Fullmetal Alchemist in English, Attack on Titan in German, and Cowboy Bebop in Chinese?

…Is Chinese canon for Cowboy Bebop? I thought it was explicitly English. Is there a Chinese dub?

Fate/Zero's main plotline is an argument against utilitarianism in favor of something like virtue ethics.

Each of Fate/stay night's three routes is about letting go of utilitarianism (under different circumstances). What is actually pretty clever is that in one of the routes characters who bonded over utilitarianism abandon it for the sake of each other. It sort of makes you wish it happened more often in real life.

No it isn't, dude just gets visions of how the local Monkey's Paw magic item is going to use his utilitarianism to justify killing everyone when he makes his wish, and that plus having to murder his waifu (again) mind-breaks him and turns him into a virtue ethicist. No actual argument against utilitarianism, just a bunch of fucked up shit happens.

Every real argument against utilitarianism is going to take a form that utilitarian true believers refuse to recognize as an argument.

Following utilitarianism broke him long before he got to the grail. It was just the idea of the grail that kept him going.

Literally the same thing as woo-ists saying that skepticism makes astrology or psychic powers or whatever not work.

At what point would him switching to Kantianism or whatever make the events of Fate/Zero all sunshine and daisies?

The thing to understand about Fate is that there's not anything to understand, it's pure chuunibyou: Rule of Cool crossbred with fractally complex power-levels/world-building. It's like Warhammer 40k or other nerd universes: it hacks your systemizing, but there's never an end to it, there's always another unit or character or secret.

Yeah, so an Airbus full of ghouls touches down in JFK. You think when he goes in to extract Natalia from the ensuing clusterfuck and watches tourists get eaten alive while knowing "I could have prevented this", that's going to be psychologically healing?
