The last owner nuked the board, so I claimed it.

I scraped as much as I could from archive.org and I'm going to try to restore it soon. Here's a sample:

>>>/test/52578

https://web.archive.org/web/20160904000539/http://8ch.net/ratanon/res/13.html

I have 301 threads, 4698 posts, and 937 (out of 1156) files.

I automated everything except the captcha, but it's going to take a while even if everything goes according to plan (it won't).

Post suggestions, complaints, etcetera

What's with the gay cursor ?

Why not just abandon 8chan all togheter and see if some already established imageboard takes us ?

Not really. Wizard types generally aren't rational even in principle and often take pride in having self-defeating values.

1. What do we call you?

Ideally nothing, I'm not a fan of identities. But if you have to, a random dictionary pick suggests "Turnstile".

I don't have an existing rationality-associated name anywhere.

The BO account is called "aKKi7wZBaf". I didn't pick that, but I like the style.

>2. Captchas are a unit of caring. Are you solving captchas for us manually?

Yes, every 75 posts. They take maybe five seconds on average, so that's only five minutes or so in total.

It might have something to do with the (now removed) CSS. I don't get anything here, but my cursor disappeared on archive.is. I guess you could take a photograph of your monitor.

I don't know if there are other suitable sites that are more reliable long-term. 8chan is backed by 2channel.

Actually even if there is, they will probably require the board to use one letter or two, and people who have nothing to do with ratanon will show up from other boards and we somewhat conduct conversation here on our own pace.

Maybe we can make a subreddit as backup, in case 8chan goes down.

Ohh and feel free to change the css here, I always hated the mundane look of yotsuba.

8chan is not the only imageboard like this. I could make a backup board on Endchan.

There's supposed to be an IRC channel somewhere too.

I don't know about the CSS. Should I change it to Photon? You can also set a personal alternative in the [Options].

Sorry I'm one of those wierd people on low end machines who from time to time use tor and have javascript disabled. [Options] does not appear for me.

I was suggesting more as a way to differentiate us from the rest of the boards even if it's something already available as an option. A slight idea of visual identity even if it sounds practically useless.

For people who spend their day on imageboards all the day a slight visual impact will help them recalibrate for that local community.

I say this based on my personal experiences, and it's my personal opinion.

There are also some 8chan css themes online on github but those might not work.

Of course if you like yotsuba you won't see me complaining.

You can try Stylish if your browser supports it. Weirder browsers often have weirder solutions. For example, qutebrowser has a global stylesheet that could be used for this.

>I was suggesting more as a way to differentiate us from the rest of the boards even if it's something already available as an option. A slight idea of visual identity even if it sounds practically useless.

That makes sense, especially for a board that's separate from the overall 8chan community. I'll make something.

Please pick a common sans serif font for the posts. Serif fonts look bad at small sizes, and Trebuchet is a Windows-centric choice.

You're right. I just left it at the Photon default, I don't even have Trebuchet installed.

On Linux with Microsoft fonts Arial usually looks better than the default sans-serif. I'd set the font to Arial first, since it is probably the most widespread adequate sans serif font, then Helvetica, then sans-serif.

Every fucking internet community that I have ever belonged to complains about decline in quality. It's almost never true, people just have rosy memories of the past. I've done actual experiments including making an IRC bot that reposts old discussions in real time, and making people look at web archived version of the "golden age" of their forum.

If there's been a decline in ratanon I think it's just because people have left and we aren't doing much to gather new members. This latest incident doesn't help things.

I used a forum with people that claimed it had declined, and when I dug through the oldest threads, I discovered that they were garbage and the quality had significantly increased over time. A lot of the regulars were around 12 when they joined, and they aged with the forum.

As of today the forum is still shit, but it's also still improving.

I agree that self-perceived decline of online communities is very often exaggerated or simply imagined, especially if they never undergo a rapid expansion. However, you shouldn't recalibrate too strongly in the other direction. Do not forget that online communities can and do decline. Just look at today's /b/ an example. It is nothing but porn now.

u/PM_ME_UR_OBSIDIAN has been having a semi-public spat with his ex girl(male)friend for the last few months. Last week u/PM_ME_UR_OBSIDIAN made some acid remarks in the secret rat!Discord about his ex and about transmen in general. Someone anonymously screencapped them and sent the screencaps to u/PM_ME_UR_OBSIDIAN's ex, who used them to get u/PM_ME_UR_OBSIDIAN evicted from his group house. The r/SSC modteam has been eating itself ever since. Accusations of transphobia and betrayal abound.
