I'm getting a bit tired of the mainstream rationalist community, where do you suggest I'd go next? Whenever I go check what they're discussing about at the moment, it's an unpleasant experience, and I usually do it out of some sort of morbid curiosity. I dislike the negativity, the nerdiness, the obsession with meta, the thing where they're trying to be as explicit as possible about social matters, and that most people seem to have a really poor sense of aesthetics. They seem to be motivated more by what they fear and dislike (death, aging, diseases, torture etc.) instead of what they love.

Pic might be related, I find the psychonaut community interesting.

Isn't this a net positive? On the Internet, where context is scarce, being explicit is a good thing unless you're occulting your in-group on purpose. I agree they could tone it down a notch to not make it read like Java for relationships, but the basic idea is sound. Maybe it also comes down to poor aesthetics.

All of these are good except the last, I'm with you on that.

I dunno, neoreaction maybe? That only has the negativity, one out of five ain't bad. (Inb4 nick land's website design)

It's a good thing for empathy-deficient rationalists who struggle with social intuition. It's understandable the OP wants to get away from such people.

In my experience, making assumptions about social stuff routinely results in hurt feeling between normals, including, and especially, women. Sometimes it is either the intended result of a successful ploy or the unintended result of a ploy that misfires, but most of it happens because they basically keep underestimating the inferential distance.

Rats are worse than normals at social skills, but at least the really explicit ones understand their deficiency more accurately (unless they're simply cargo culting, which I bet at least a third of them is). They could have tried to standardize on everyone aspiring to become a diplomat, but this would have been a large upfront cost and autist-unfriendly, and nobody likes large upfront costs. The alternative they chose has a cost in efficiency, weirdness and sex appeal, but as an ongoing cost it is not felt as sharply. The optimum of explicitness for fairly neurotypical smart people probably lies between the normals' and that of today's mainstream rationalists.

Well, I didn't say hanging around normals was a particularly appealing prospect either.

I was commenting on normals' standard approach to communication, not just normals themselves. Most nerds operate under the same assumptions (and suffer even more for it). Actually, I'd appreciate hearing about any groups that clearly do not fall into the normals' or the rationalists' communication trap, whether by striking a good balance between implicitness and verbosity, or being diplomats, or some other means.
