(CNN)The head of the Justice Department's civil division announced his resignation on Tuesday, the same day he signed onto a lawsuit suing President Donald Trump's former national security adviser John Bolton over the scheduled publication of his book.

In an email obtained by CNN, Jody Hunt told his division that he would be exiting on July 3. He joins a list of senior Justice Department officials who are leaving their posts ahead of the election, as is typical for many political appointees in the department. CNN reported earlier this month that the head of the criminal division and the solicitor general were both planning to step down.

Hunt's division defended the administration's policies in court, including in several headline-grabbing cases, like the fight over congressional subpoenas. Earlier Tuesday, Hunt had signed onto a lawsuit levied against President Donald Trump's former national security adviser, John Bolton, ahead of the release of Bolton's tell-all book.

CNN has reached out to the Justice Department for comment, and to inquire about Hunt's replacement.

Before taking over the civil division, Hunt served as chief of staff to former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and before that, was a longtime career employee of the division. Before that, Hunt worked as a lawyer in private practice.

Following his Senate confirmation in 2018, Sessions said in a statement, "I am deeply indebted to Jody for his outstanding service as my Chief of Staff. He is a man of great integrity, energy, and legal skill. He is uniquely qualified to lead the Department's largest litigation division, where I am confident he will ably advocate this administration's legal agenda."

The Justice Department's civil division functions as the government's law firm, and according to the department's website, is the largest litigating component of the Department of Justice.

Each year, the civil division "represents the United States and its agencies, Members of Congress, Cabinet Officers, and other federal employees in tens of thousands of cases. In total, the Civil Division litigates matters on behalf of over 100 different federal agencies," according to the department's website.

The lawsuit Hunt signed onto earlier Tuesday marks the most significant escalation of a months-long battle between the White House and Bolton over the release of his book in a move that raises major First Amendment implications.

The suit, filed in Washington, DC, federal court, alleges that Bolton's 500-plus page manuscript was "rife with classified information," and prosecutors say that Bolton backed out of an ongoing White House vetting process for the book that he'd been obligated to do as a result of the agreements. Bolton's legal team denies the assertion.

Cuomo has tried to deflect responsibility for the policy, claiming he was merely following Trump’s policy, referring to an administration statement from March 13. “Sorry, Governor, but you’re twisting what the statement said,” McCaughey says. “The administration recommended nursing homes should admit patients even if they were coming from a hospital battling COVID-19, not that patients with COVID-19 themselves should be admitted.”

To the contrary, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was emphatic about the dangers of allowing COVID-19 to invade a nursing home. On March 18, the CDC stated that “once COVID-19 has been introduced into a long term care facility, it has the potential to result in high attack rates among residents, staff members, and visitors.” The agency warned “it is critical that long-term care facilities implement active measures to prevent introduction of COVID-19.”

One week later, on March 25, Cuomo’s Health Department mandated that nursing homes accept COVID patients and barred homes from requiring COVID tests for admission. Facilities had to fly blind, not knowing which incoming patients endangered residents and staff.

Lawmakers Demand Answers From Governors Who Forced Nursing Homes to Accept CCP Virus Patients

Republican lawmakers on the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis sent letters on June 15 to the governors of five states that mandated that nursing homes take in COVID-19 patients despite federal pandemic guidance to the contrary. The letters, signed by five Republicans on the CCP virus committee, were sent to the governors of New York, Michigan, California, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The letter demands records on the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths at nursing homes, executive pandemic orders and directives on nursing homes, and other relevant documents and communications. “The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected the elderly, especially those living in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities,” the letters state. “We write seeking information, at a granular level, about the science and information used to inform your decision to mandate nursing homes and long-term care facilities admit untested and contagious COVID-19 patients from hospitals.”

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order on March 25 prohibiting nursing homes from denying admission to patients solely on the basis of having been infected with the CCP virus, also known as the novel coronavirus. Cuomo issued a companion executive order on May 10 that blocked hospitals from sending infected patients to nursing homes, but continued the mandate against denying residents admission to nursing homes based on testing results. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a similar order on April 15. The state health departments in California, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania issued similar guidance and directives in mid-to-late March. All five of the governors are Democrats.

Rich Azzopardi, senior adviser to Cuomo, said in a statement emailed to The Epoch Times, “These craven political hacks sent this same partisan document to several other states—all of which happen to have Democratic governors—apparently seeking some sort of election-year boost and to misdirect attention away from the oversight committee’s investigation into the federal pandemic response.” Azzopardi pointed out that current New York state law prohibits nursing homes from accepting patients for whom they can’t provide adequate care. The state’s law is similar to the federal guidelines issued on March 13, which advised that nursing homes only take in patients with actual and suspected CCP virus infections if they were capable of following the quarantine guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The same federal guidance called on nursing homes to restrict all nonessential visits, among other measures, to protect elderly Americans, who faced the greatest risk of a fatal outcome in case of an infection. The offices of the governors of the four other states didn’t respond to requests for comment by press time.

Some 6,360 nursing home residents in New York died from the CCP virus, more than a quarter of the state’s total pandemic death toll, according to the letter sent to Cuomo. More than 15,500 nursing home patients died from the virus in California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. “Just about the worst possible thing to do is knowingly introduce coronavirus to the most vulnerable populations, yet that’s exactly what several states did by mandating nursing homes accept infected patients,” Select Subcommittee member Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) said. “These misguided policies deserve close scrutiny, and the leaders who put them in place have a lot of tough questions to answer.” New Jersey suffered the greatest nursing home death toll in the nation, with 6,432 deaths, accounting for 10 percent of the state’s entire nursing home population. Florida, which banned COVID-19 transfers to nursing homes, lost just 1 percent of its sizable nursing home population, according to ProPublica. Michigan and Pennsylvania lost 3 percent of their nursing home populations to the virus. California, which quickly changed course after adopting guidelines similar to New York, lost 1 percent of all nursing home residents, according to the letters from the committee.

Cancel Culture – What Happens When Everything Gets Cancelled?

Cancel culture refers to the popular practice of withdrawing support for (canceling) public figures and companies after they have done or said something considered objectionable or offensive. It may be an innocuous word or tweet from years ago, that through the long memory of social media can resurface, leading to public group shaming of an individual.

Such shaming typically goes only one way, based on one’s politics. For others it’s just a matter of being caught in the stampede. A “Saturday Night Live” cast member, Shane Gillis, made a derogatory comment about Asians a few years ago and was fired for his comments.

Uber liberals however, like MSNBC’s Joy Reid, get a pass for past homophobic blog posts. Other woke liberals who toe the line on global warming and abortion also get a pass for racially insensitive behavior like wearing blackface. They weren’t singing ‘Mammy” with Al Jolson a century ago, but wearing blackface far more recently. Examples include Howard Stern, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Virginia Governor Ralph (Coonman) Northam.

The cancel culture has morphed to cancelling America because of who it might offend. What happens when everything gets cancelled and we become a society described by letters and numbers, eliminating our rich history and traditions? The self-appointed censors have found their voices after George Floyd’s death and the immediate end to COVID-19 threats, with protests and riots not only now condoned but actually encouraged. What are some of the casualties?

Gone with the Wind, a multi-Academy Award winning classic movie was cancelled from HBO due to “racial insensitivity.” Several Netflix shows were cancelled due to an Australian comedian’s use of blackface. Yet Northam and Trudeau haven’t been cancelled out of government.

Police shows have also been cancelled, at least the ones not portraying a multigendered police force concerned more about their carbon footprints than catching the bad guys.

Newspaper editors have been cancelled for the high crime of publishing op-ed pieces, which they invited, written by a conservative senator, as was the case for NY Times editor James Bennet. So much for the Times motto, “All the news that’s fit to print.” They should just change their names to the Democrat Party Times.

Millions mistakenly raised for unaffiliated Black Lives Matter Foundation that wants to work with police

Amid multiple high-profile police shootings in recent years, millions of dollars were raised for “The Black Lives Matter Foundation,” but the charity is unaffiliated with and diametrically opposed to the movement of the same name.

The foundation is a Santa Clarita, California–based charitable organization, which lists a UPS store as its address. It was founded by Robert Ray Barnes, a 67-year-old LA music producer, in May 2015.

It is among the first verified organizations that appears when users search for “Black Lives Matter” on GoFundMe, so many people did not perform due diligence when donating. They included employees from Apple, Google, and Microsoft who raised millions of dollars for the foundation but stopped just short of making actual donations after the bizarre situation came to light.

Rough estimates indicate that somewhere in the region of $4.35 million was raised for the Black Lives Matter Foundation in the first weeks of June, but the majority of it was frozen before it could be released. Apparently, even GoFundMe was unaware of the lack of affiliation, which only came to light following media enquiries.

The Black Lives Matter movement evolved from the 2013 hashtag spawned in the wake of the Treyvon Martin case. In recent weeks, following the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department, the BLM movement has called for the police to be defunded and the money to be redirected to help black communities.

The BLM Foundation, however, claims to be working towards “bringing the community and police closer together.”

“I don’t have anything to do with the Black Lives Matter Global Network. I never met them; never spoke to them. I don’t know them; I have no relationship with them,” Barnes said. “Our whole thing is having unity with the police department.”

Jewish center to host imam who defended al-Qaeda medic and justified call for Israel’s destruction

A prominent Jewish cultural center in New York is taking the unusual step of hosting an imam who once justified calls for Israel’s destruction and defended an al-Qaeda medic.

The 92Y cultural center has invited Imam Al-Hajj Talib Abdur-Rashid, of New York’s Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood, to a virtual conference where he will discuss how society can move past the shared hardships of “recent events” with Rabbi Peter Rubinstein of New York’s Central Synagogue.

The event’s description does not detail which “recent events” it was referring to, though Abdur-Rashid has been critical of Muslims cooperating with the US government and law enforcement, in particular the NYPD, and New York has been a flashpoint for violence in the wake of George Floyd’s death in the custody of Minneapolis police.

In 2006, Abdur-Rashid reportedly defended former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s call for Israel’s destruction, claiming it was a “sentiment born of the legitimate anger, frustration and bitterness that is felt in many parts of the Muslim world.”

However, the imam did previously refer to the Holocaust as “one of the great tragedies of humanity, along with slavery, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Bosnia and Rwanda.”

Among the Abdur-Rashid’s other controversial pronouncements was his 2005 defense of Rafiq Sabir, an American doctor who agreed to work as a medic for al-Qaeda. “Dr Sabir was well-known here in Harlem and known, really, as a humanitarian physician,” Abdur-Rashid said. Sabir was convicted of supporting terrorism and subsequently sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The imam also twice visited the White House during the Obama administration. The unusual inter-faith event will take place on Thursday.

Amazon uses augmented reality to spy on its staff to ensure social distancing

Amazon has previously admitted to policing its workers. Now it’s using AR to make sure they maintain WHO-sanctioned social distancing at all times inside its warehouses.

On Tuesday, Amazon’s vice president and chief roboticist Brad Porter unveiled a new augmented reality (AR) system called Distance Assistant.

Distance Assistant works by using machine-learning to differentiate people from their environment. “Combined with depth sensors, it creates an accurate distance measurement between associates,” Porter said in a blog post.

The assistant, Porter explained, was already installed in several of Amazon’s ‘fulfilment centres’ – the name the company gives its warehouses, and is due to be rolled out to hundreds more.

As workers walk past the camera, a 127cm (50in) monitor displays their image overlaid with circles to indicate if they’re social distancing. The feedback is immediate, with those correctly distanced by 1.82m (6ft) surrounded by a green circle, and those too close ringed with a red one.

Judge denies emergency request to stop Trump’s Tulsa campaign rally due to coronavirus fears

(CNN) — A judge on Tuesday denied an emergency motion to stop President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday.

The decision came after local lawyers asked the court to block the event unless organizers agreed to take steps to adhere to the administration’s own social distancing recommendations to limit the spread of coronavirus. Paul DeMuro, one of the attorneys on the lawsuit trying to block the rally, said that — despite the emergency motion to block the rally being denied — the case will head to the state Supreme Court.

“The lawsuit is still intact and moving forward,” DeMuro told CNN. “We will continue to fight in the Oklahoma Supreme Court.”

Citing Tulsa health department statistics showing that the highest new coronavirus case count occurred this Monday, the lawyers are suing the parent company of the Bank of Oklahoma Center, the venue slated to host the rally, alleging “despite this alarming uptick in COVID-19 infections in Tulsa County, ASM Global plans to bring tens of thousands of people into an enclosed arena in downtown Tulsa for a political rally on June 20, 2020 … without putting precautions in place to prevent the spread of the virus.”

“As currently planned, the Rally will endanger not only the health of the guests in attendance, but the entire Tulsa community and any community to which the guests may afterward travel. If ASM Global moves forward with the Rally without adequate review, planning, training, protective equipment, and safeguards, cases of COVID-19—and the unavoidable attendant deaths—will rise,” the petition states.

The rally would be Trump’s first major campaign event since the coronavirus pandemic shut down most of American life, and officials are expecting hundreds of thousands of supporters to attempt to attend. The Bank of Oklahoma Center holds about 20,000 people but the Trump campaign has claimed that more than 1 million individuals have made an online RSVP to attend, though it’s dubious how many actually plan on doing so.

The Trump campaign declined to comment on the lawsuit.

DeMuro told CNN that the decision to sue to stop the rally was not political.

“We’re not asking to stop the rally. So you need to understand that, first, if Joe Biden, if the Thunder (the NBA team in nearby Oklahoma City), if Garth Brooks was wanting to have a 19,000-person event and this center on Sunday, without abiding by the government mandated CDC guidelines, with respect to mass events, we’d be making the same allegations and filing the same lawsuit,” DeMuro said.

“All we’re asking, it’s very simple: If the President wants to hold a rally here, he needs to abide by the social distancing guidelines of his own (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).”

Trump campaign officials have said that there will be temperature checks upon entry to the arena, and masks and hand sanitizer will be distributed. However, there are no plans to implement social distancing guidelines.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a series of community groups and two specific individuals, who the attorneys describe as particularly vulnerable to the spread of Covid-19. In their complaint, they describe the indoor event as a “super spreader” that could end up impacting even people who choose not to attend. They point to the CDC-recommended guidelines in their complaint as evidence that the proposed event could cause a great danger to the public.

Lara Trump, a senior Trump campaign adviser and daughter-in-law to the President, said in an interview with Fox News on Monday that the campaign will not “enforce that everybody wear a mask” at the rally.

“We are offering people masks,” Lara Trump said. “If they choose to wear them, we are happy with that. If they choose not to wear them, we are not going to go around and enforce that everybody wear a mask.”

LOCKED AND LOADED: ARTEMIS I’S MUSCLE DELIVERED TO KSC

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — NASA, still riding high after regaining the ability to launch astronauts to low-Earth-orbit (LEO), is now preparing to turn the dial up to eleven. LEO is nice and all – but flying to the Moon is way better. The agency is pulling together the pieces to achieve just that.

Sending a spacecraft with astronauts and the required flight and support systems some 239,000 miles (384,633 kilometers) away from Earth requires muscle. Enter the solid rocket boosters or ‘SRBs’ of the Space Launch System (SLS). The segments for the two rocket boosters that will be used on Artemis I have been delivered to KSC, in anticipation of the Nov. 1, 2021 flight of the Artemis I mission.

“New technologies and material upgrades enable the boosters to meet the high performance demands of SLS, the most powerful rocket NASA has built to date,” said Charlie Precourt, vice president, propulsion systems, Northrop Grumman. “Our technology will help propel the first woman and the next man to the Moon.”

Each SLS rocket is designed to be able to deliver an estimated 3.6 million pounds of thrust. A majority of that “umph” comes from two SRBs. Similar to the boosters used on NASA’s now-retired fleet of Space Shuttles, the duo can be described as pillars of thrust as they provide some 75 percent of the punch needed to send the Lockheed Martin-built Orion spacecraft on its flight to lunar orbit. In terms of exploring deep space, NASA has opted for an “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” mentality, opting to leverage materials and a system that has some thirty years of experience tucked under its belt.

It takes more than experience to get to the Moon however. Whereas the space shuttles employed four-segment SRBs, SLS will use five segment versions. It’s hoped that by using “flight-proven” systems such as these SRBs, that it will lower costs while increasing reliability.

Lengthy testing is being undertaken to all components designed to fly into the black of space, especially in cases where changes have been proposed since the design’s prior service; this ensures that everything will work as advertised. The five segment booster design is no exception, with Northrop Grumman having tested each element to certify that these SRBs are ready for flight come next year.

Precourt is the man taking point of Northrop Grumman’s development of these new boosters, and pulled no punches in detailing the potential of SLS in general and Artemis I in particular.

“NASA’s Artemis program is a nationwide effort that reignites space exploration,” Charlie Precourt, vice president, Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems told SpaceFlight Insider. “We at Northrop Grumman are proud to provide the propulsion that will help NASA get boots back on the Moon.”

Pelosi Keeping House Out of DC to Give Dems More Campaign Time as Constituent Services Suffer, House GOPer Claims

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is keeping the House of Representatives from joining the Senate in the nation’s capital full time because she fears Democrats could lose their majority in November, according to a key congressional Republican. “I think it’s pretty telling, if she doesn’t want her members coming back to D.C., she really believes there is a need for them to be back in their districts,” Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) told The Epoch Times on June 16. “And that tells me she is more worried about keeping their majority than what many prognosticators have given her the chance to do,” Davis said. Davis is the ranking Republican on the House Administration Committee, which oversees the daily operations of the House of Representatives. A spokesman for Pelosi didn’t immediately respond to The Epoch Times’ request for comment.

Democrats regained the House majority in the 2018 congressional elections after losing it in 2010; Republicans hold the majority in the Senate. Davis and two Republican colleagues on the panel—Reps. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) and Mark Walker (R-N.C.)—challenged Pelosi in a June 12 letter first reported on June 15 by The Epoch Times to “immediately expedite the roll-out of support assistance to offices, making it possible for staff and members to work in a safe environment” and to return the House to Capitol Hill to work alongside the Senate. Davis rejected fears of the CCP virus—also known as the novel coronavirus—as justification for not bringing the House back to the Capitol. “We’ve already demonstrated we can safely return the House … the Senate has been in D.C. almost weekly since the beginning of May,” Davis said. “We have not seen a spike in COVID-19 cases in the Senate even though the average age of a senator makes them much closer to the most vulnerable population we been told about by the professionals than House members.”

In early May, Pelosi brought the House back to Washington temporarily to vote on her $3 trillion Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act economic recovery package and a proposal to allow House members to vote by proxy. Davis said the ability of representatives’ staffs to help constituents with problems with the federal government is also hurt by keeping the House out of the Capitol. With the Capitol staff, many of whom are longtime employees and have connections to the bureaucracy, working at home and being more difficult to reach, the district staff has had a harder time getting the information they need to help constituents. “We have seen an exponential increase in the number of cases that we’re dealing with in district offices,” Davis told The Epoch Times. “In my office alone, we’ve had 784 constituent cases related to travel restrictions, economic impact payments, unemployment, and others, and that is almost double the next highest amount handled in the first five months of any year since 2013.”

Caseworkers in other congressional offices on both sides of Congress told The Epoch Times of similar experiences in recent interviews. “We are inundated every single day with calls from ‘Where is my IRS refund,’ to ‘I never received my stimulus,’ and ‘I did receive my [unemployment] debit card but it didn’t come in a government envelope, so I shredded it thinking it was a credit card offer,’” said the chief caseworker for a congressman representing a suburban southern district. “Also, we get a very big bulk of calls from people who have not received their unemployment benefits. They say they cannot get through to talk to anyone and cannot get through on their website,” added the caseworker, who asked not to be named. Similarly, the constituent services staff chief for a senator representing a midwestern state, who also requested anonymity, told The Epoch Times their caseload has increased from approximately 300 to more than 1,400 since March, necessitating the temporary diversion of six staffers to help the six regular caseworkers.

Democratic campaign strategist Jim Manley, former communications director for then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, told The Epoch Times on June 16 that he is skeptical of the idea that Pelosi is worried about November. “If the Senate isn’t going to do much of anything, and [Senate Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell (R-Ky.) has made it abundantly clear that they are not, I’m not sure how much the Democratic leadership needs to worry about keeping the House in session if the Senate won’t take up what they are passing. Because the only thing McConnell cares about is confirming [Trump] nominees,” Manley said.
