Dissident British Ex-Diplomat Craig Murray Indicted For Blog Posts in Kafkaesque Case

Craig Murray, a former UK diplomat turned anti-war activist, has been charged with contempt of court for writing blog posts. He faces a possible two years in jail, with no jury and no freedom of speech defense permitted.

The renowned British peace activist and former diplomat Craig Murray has been charged with contempt of court for writing blog posts.

The suspicious indictment represents a heavily politicized, Kafkaesque case in which Murray has virtually none of his rights guaranteed. It also appears to be a part of the British government's aggressive crackdown on the Scottish independence movement.

In comments to The Grayzone, Murray described the case against him as a thoroughly undemocratic attack on free speech, and warned it may be punishment for his dissident journalism and activism exposing the UK's crimes and lies.

Murray said he faces the possibility of "no jury, no 'beyond reasonable doubt' test, no public interest defence allowed, no freedom of speech defence allowed, and up to two years in jail and an 'unlimited' fine."

Craig Murray served as Britain's ambassador to Uzbekistan from 2002 to 2004. The UK Foreign Office fired him for his exposure of British and US involvement in egregious human rights violations in the country. Murray had blown the whistle on torture, warning that the CIA was using highly dubious intelligence obtained from tortured detainees.

It’s not hate crime, it’s not an opinion against a certain category of people, it’s actually looking to enact violence and often eradicate an entire group of people. It’s very serious and it has a political objective, and as a result, it deserves to be designated.”

Holly Huffnagle, the AJC’s US director for combating antisemitism, addressed the free speech issues raised by combating antisemitism online, noting that in the US, the First Amendment did not apply to private online platforms.

“If I post something or say something that goes against those tech companies’ rules,” she said, “it’s not a freedom of speech issue, its actually a corporate responsibility issue for them to clean out their platforms.”

Huffnagle sounded an optimistic note, however, saying, “We have seen improvement. If you look at just 10 years ago, where we were in this space, it’s leaps and bounds for what tech companies are able to respond to, what they’re doing now. There is movement, but we’re in the middle of it right now and we can’t stop.” "

More Than 30 Million Americans Unemployed: Another 3.8 Million Seek Unemployment Benefits

Unemployment claims rose for the sixth straight week as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, with 3.8 million Americans filing initial claims and bringing the total to nearly double the number of unemployed during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday.

“Another 3.8 million Americans filed new claims for unemployment benefits last week,” Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst for Bankrate, said in a statement. “That measure, shockingly high under any circumstances, means that the total number of new claims is 30 million since the pandemic and economic slowdown erupted."

Economists say the unemployment rate for April could reach 20%, which is the highest rate since the Great Depression, which reached a rate of 25%, the Associated Press reported. During the Depression, 15 million Americans were without jobs.

The unemployment report followed Wednesday's release of first quarter results for the gross domestic product. The Commerce Department reported the economy contracted 4.8% just two weeks into pandemic mitigation efforts. Estimates for the second quarter contraction range as high as 40%.

“The United States hit a grim milestone that just months ago seemed unimaginable: More than 30 million workers, or 1 in 5 members of the covered workforce , have lost their jobs and filed for unemployment in the last six weeks,” Andrew Stettner, senior fellow at the Century Foundation and one of the nation’s leading unemployment insurance experts said in a statement.

Also revealed in the trove of documents the NSA posted is the origin of Israel’s oft-repeated credo that it would not be the first to introduce nuclear weapons — a deliberately ambiguous statement that left Israel room to develop the weapons, but not arm them.

Shimon Peres, then the deputy defense minister who later would lead the country as prime minister for two stints and then become president, improvised the statement when he was surprised by Kennedy during a meeting Peres had scheduled with Kennedy’s adviser, Myer Feldman, who also functioned as the administration’s liaison to Israel and the U.S. Jewish community. Unbeknownst to Peres, Kennedy and Feldman had planned the “surprise” encounter.

According to a Hebrew-language Foreign Ministry of Israel account of the April 2 meeting, Kennedy asked Peres into the Oval Office for 30 minutes and questioned him on Israel’s nuclear capacity.

“You know that we follow very closely the discovery of any nuclear development in the region,” Kennedy said. “This could create a very dangerous situation. For this reason, we monitor your nuclear effort. What could you tell me about this?”

Peres improvised, “I can tell you most clearly that we will not introduce nuclear weapons to the region, and certainly we will not be the first.”

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer ordered that Hezbollah’s activities be banned due to violations of criminal law, he announced on Thursday.

Police in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bremen and Berlin began searches in mosques and residences tied to Hezbollah, “due to their financial support and propaganda for the terrorist organization,” after the ban was announced at 6 a.m.

Israel and the United States have long pushed for Germany to ban the Shi’ite terrorist group. Germany previously drew a distinction between Hezbollah's political arm and its military units, which fought alongside President Bashar Assad's army in Syria.
