Amazon (AMZN - Free Report) came out with quarterly earnings of $6.04 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $5.55 per share. This compares to earnings of $2.16 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.
This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of 8.83%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this online retailer would post earnings of $3.29 per share when it actually produced earnings of $5.75, delivering a surprise of 74.77%.
Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates four times.
Amazon, which belongs to the Zacks Internet - Commerce industry, posted revenues of $72.38 billion for the quarter ended December 2018, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.91%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $60.45 billion. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates two times over the last four quarters.
The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.
Amazon shares have added about 11.2% since the beginning of the year versus the S&P 500's gain of 7%.
It will be interesting to see how estimates for the coming quarters and current fiscal year change in the days ahead. The current consensus EPS estimate is $4.75 on $61.19 billion in revenues for the coming quarter and $26.75 on $280.07 billion in revenues for the current fiscal year.

Baltimore, Maryland – George Tomasack, age 47, of Baltimore, Maryland, pleaded guilty to making a series of telephone bomb threats in October 2016 against the Pentagon Tours Office and a CNN news affiliate.
The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur and Special Agent in Charge Sung Yi of the United States Secret Service - Baltimore Field Office.
According to his plea agreement, on October 25, 2016, Tomasack made threatening calls to the Pentagon Tours Office and to CNN-Atlanta, in addition to other private and government locations. Tomasack admitted that during the calls he threatened to blow up the locations. Specifically, during the call to the Pentagon Tours Office, Tomasack stated that the call was an “ISIS threat” and “there will be a (unintelligible) at your building in five hours.” On that same day, Tomasack called a CNN news affiliate in Atlanta and stated that “he was associated with ISIS and they were going to blow up a government building.”

BOSTON – Two Malaysian nationals were arrested today and charged with conspiring to illegally export firearms and firearm parts from the United States to an individual located in Hong Kong, China.
Lionel Chan, 35, who resided in Brighton, Mass., and Muhammad Radzi, 26, who resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., were each charged by criminal complaint with one count of conspiring to violate the Arms Export Control Act. Chan was also charged with one count of obstruction of justice. Chan will appear this afternoon in federal court in Boston and Radzi will appear in federal court in the Eastern District of New York.
According to the criminal complaint, beginning in or around March 2018, Chan began purchasing a variety of U.S.-origin firearm parts, including parts used to assemble AR-15 assault rifles and 9MM semi-automatic handguns, at the request of a buyer in Hong Kong. Chan purchased the parts online through a variety of websites, including eBay and gunbroker.com. These firearm parts are restricted items and cannot be exported from the United States without a license. Nevertheless, Chan allegedly shipped the firearm parts via Federal Express to the buyer in Hong Kong without first obtaining the necessary export licenses. Chan intentionally concealed the contents of the shipments by providing false descriptions of the items contained in each shipment and by concealing the parts inside the package. For example, in one text exchange, Chan and the Hong Kong buyer discussed how to illegally ship a Glock 19 semi-automatic handgun. The Hong Kong buyer wrote, “this is how we are shipping the Glock 19 and USP compact barrel. I usually stuff them into a pair of sneakers, and cover it with Doritos or chips.” Between March and May 2018, Chan shipped 12 packages from Brighton, Mass., to the buyer in Hong Kong.
In or around April 2018, Radzi allegedly joined the conspiracy and began illegally exporting firearm parts to Hong Kong as well. Between May and October 2018, Radzi allegedly shipped 21 packages from Brooklyn, N.Y., to the buyer in Hong Kong. In October 2018, two of those packages were interdicted by Hong Kong authorities and found to contain numerous firearms parts, including a firing pin and gun sight, which were export-controlled. Like Chan, Radzi failed to obtain an export license for any of these shipments.

BOSTON – A Worcester restaurant manager pleaded guilty yesterday in federal court in Worcester to conspiring with the wife of a convicted drug dealer to use drug proceeds to renovate and operate a Shrewsbury Street restaurant.
Joseph Herman, 37, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering, making false statements to federal investigators and attempted witness tampering. U.S. District Court Judge Timothy S. Hillman scheduled sentencing for May 28, 2019.
Between May 2017 and September 2017, Herman conspired with co-defendant Stacy Gala to launder the proceeds of illegal drug sales by Gala’s husband, Kevin A. Perry Jr. Herman worked as the manager of The Usual, a Worcester restaurant owned and operated by Perry and Gala. Herman admitted that, after Perry’s arrest in March 2017, he and Gala conspired to use Perry’s drug proceeds to renovate the restaurant and to reopen the business under a new name, “The Chameleon.” Herman also admitted that he lied to federal investigators about the source of the funds used to renovate the restaurant, and attempted to convince another witness to falsely testify about Herman’s involvement in the money laundering scheme.
In October 2017, Perry pleaded guilty to money laundering and drug distribution charges and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Stacy Gala is scheduled for trial on May 6, 2019.

On November 2, 2011, the government issued a final rule amending the Federal Acquisition Regulation ("FAR") to include new provisions governing personal conflicts of interest of contractor and subcontractor employees supporting or performing certain government acquisition functions.
Overview
Government employees, both military and civilian alike, are prohibited by federal law from having financial or other interests that conflict with their government duties. Acknowledging that certain work performed by government contractor employees could give rise to similar conflicts of interest, Section 841(a) of the Duncan Hunter National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2009, for the first time imposes personal conflict of interest ("PCI") restrictions on contractor personnel. These new rules are separate and apart from the organizational conflict of interest restrictions imposed on organizations under FAR Part 9.5
Effective November 2, 2011, the FAR Councils, in consultation with the Office of Federal Procurement Policy, issued a final rule concerning personal conflicts of interest. This rule imposes significant new and potentially burdensome compliance requirements on federal contractors and subcontractors that support or perform "acquisition functions closely associated with inherently governmental functions."

SANTA ANA, California—Twenty people have been charged in the largest-ever crackdown on businesses that help Chinese women travel to the United States to give birth to babies who automatically are American citizens, authorities said Jan. 31. Three people were arrested in Southern California on charges including conspiracy, visa fraud and money laundering. More than a dozen others have also been charged in cases stemming from three so-called birth tourism businesses, with many believed to be in China, the U.S. Attorney’s office said. It is the first time the United States has criminally prosecuted birth tourism operators, said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office.
The businesses—which were raided by federal agents in 2015—billed Chinese women tens of thousands of dollars to travel to California to deliver their babies in American hospitals so the children would automatically obtain U.S. citizenship, prosecutors said. It isn’t illegal to visit the United States while pregnant, but authorities said the businesses touted the benefits of having U.S. citizen babies and had women hide their pregnancies while seeking travel visas and lie about their planned trips. One business allegedly coached women to tell consular officials they planned to visit a Trump hotel in Hawaii, but in reality, they would spend three months at an apartment in Irvine, California to give birth.
U.S. authorities said the businesses not only engaged in fraud but have created a national security risk. Their customers—some who work for the Chinese government—have secured American citizenship for children who can later move back to the United States, and once they’re 21-years-old, sponsor their parents for green cards. “I see this as a grave national security concern and vulnerability,” said Mark Zito, assistant special agent-in-charge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s homeland security investigations in Los Angeles. “Are some of them doing it for security because the United States is more stable? Absolutely. But will those governments take advantage of this? Yes, they will.” The phenomenon of birth tourism is hardly new. The businesses have long operated in California and other states and cater to couples from China, Russia, Nigeria and elsewhere. In the past, birth tourism operators sometimes ran into trouble with local code enforcement officials when neighbors in residential areas complained about crowding or excess trash, but they didn’t face federal scrutiny.
In 2015, federal agents raided roughly three dozen sites connected with birth tourism in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties. More than 20 people were designated material witnesses to the cases but some later fled back to China and were charged with violating federal court orders, and an immigration lawyer who helped them leave the country was convicted of obstruction of justice. This week, a federal grand jury indicted four people who were accused of running the three birth tourism businesses until the 2015 raids. One of the businesses dated at least to 2010 but advertised having brought 8,000 women to the United States—half of them from China—since it claimed to have been started in 1999. Federal officials said each business brought hundreds of customers to give birth in the United States. In one of the cases, U.S. authorities outlined in court filings how wealthy Chinese couples paid the company You Win USA between $40,000 and $80,000 to travel to apartments in Irvine, California, to deliver their babies. BOSTON – An Everett man was sentenced today in federal court in Boston in connection with a scheme to defraud the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) of more than $1.7 million.
Edison Delarosa, 53, was sentenced by U.S. Senior District Court Judge George A. O’Toole Jr. to two years in prison, three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $27,227.
In October 2018, Delarosa pleaded guilty to three counts of mail fraud and three counts of wire fraud. In February 2017, Delarosa was arrested and charged and subsequently released on conditions.

They do an extraction on the material and isolate the specific compound of interest. Then they analyze it used the instruments people have been talking about. Basic analytical chemistry. -Production lab stuff.
