Senate investigators have obtained new information showing Donald Trump Jr.'s mysterious phone calls ahead of the 2016 Trump Tower meeting were not with his father, three sources with knowledge of the matter told CNN.

Records provided to the Senate Intelligence Committee show the calls were between Trump Jr. and two of his business associates, the sources said, and appear to contradict Democrats' long-held suspicions that the blocked number was from then-candidate Donald Trump.

In NBC/WSJ Data, President Trump Has Solid Standing in Key Trump Counties

Starting in 2017, the NBC/WSJ poll has tracked two types of key Trump Counties in competitive states: Trump Surge and Trump Flip. The Trump Surge counties are those where Trump outperformed Mitt Romney’s 2012 net vote percentage by 20% or more. And, the Trump Flip counties are the counties that flipped from voting for Barack Obama is 2012 to Donald Trump in 2016.

By using merged data from all registered voter interviews from the NBC/WSJ poll (N=9,180 total interviews in 2018), it allows us to look at these key counties. After controlling for demographic differences between years, Trump has maintained and solidified his position in both of these county types.

In the Surge Counties – where Trump ran up large margins in the 2016 election – the President’s approval has passed the 60% mark, with an approval rating of 62% approve-31% approve. This is an improvement over his 58%-33% rating in the 2017 data.

And in the Flip Counties, Trump’s approval stands at 47% approve-51% disapprove, modestly up from 45%-50% in 2017 NBC/WSJ data. At the same time, registered voters’ feelings towards the President remain unchanged at 39% positive in 2018 compared to 40% positive in 2017. (Trump was elected with a 31% positive-57% negative image in these counties that he flipped in 2016 – this is a marked improvement over his standing then.)

At the same time, the Republican Party’s image in these Flip Counties has improved from 32% positive-47% negative in 2017 to 34% positive-40% negative in 2018. This paired with the Democratic Party being slightly less positive in these key Flip Counties at 33% positive-42% negative, helps show that these counties will remain competitive and could still lean GOP lean in 2020.

With President Trump improving over 2017 in the Surge Counties where he needs to run up his vote margins, he does not need to win every single Flip County in 2020. And, given that his approval in these Flip Counties is stronger than his national job approval (44% approve-53% disapprove in the merged NBC/WSJ 2018 data), it is important to remember that the 2020 election will be decided in these counties and not the parts of the country steadfastly against President Trump.

Former “Jerry Springer” producer Jill Blackstone must stand trial for allegedly killing her deaf and partially blind sister in a murder-suicide scheme gone “awry,” a Los Angeles judge ruled Wednesday.

The judge’s ruling capped a lengthy hearing that revealed new details in the bizarre case – including the contents of the so-called “suicide” note found near victim Wendy Blackstone’s hand and disturbing signs Jill Blackstone admittedly plastered outside their North Hollywood garage.

Tran caused the $775,000 payment from Microsoft to be routed through two Microsoft vendors and then to Tran’s personal bank account. Tran then attempted to cause Microsoft to make a second payment for $670,000, based on another fraudulent invoice. Tran intended to route that payment to a company Tran controlled. When Microsoft vendors became suspicious of Tran’s activity and reported the conduct to Microsoft, Tran destroyed electronic communications and told the vendors to lie to Microsoft about the $775,000 payment. After Microsoft confronted Tran, Tran returned the $775,000.

D.C. Pays ‘Plastic Straw Cop’ $60,000 Salary to Enforce City’s Straw Ban

The city of Washington, DC, is taking drastic measures to ensure that no restaurant in the city uses plastic straws, spending $60,000 per year to pay a “plastic straw cop” to monitor restaurants which stray from the rules.

D.C. Department of Energy and Environment inspector Zach Rybarczyk, the city’s hand-picked straw monitor, has been patrolling area restaurants to ensure their straws are paper and not plastic ever since the city’s plastic straw ban went into effect at the beginning of January, the Washington Post reported Monday.

Rybarczyk’s services do not come cheap. According to a document on salary information from D.C.’s Department of Human Resources, Rybarczyk takes home $60,472 per year as an environmental protection specialist and has been on the D.C. government’s payroll since April 2017

Since the ban went into effect, Rybarczyk wasted no time trying to track down any restaurants still using plastic straws. He told one cashier at the Lotus Express in Union Station that the store would face $800 in fines if they were caught using plastic straws again in July.

Rybarczyk, who told the Post he carries a metal straw around for personal use, said he is merely giving local businesses “a heads up” with his warnings before he starts giving out fines.

“Obviously there will be some holdouts until July, when we start issuing fines. But it’s most fair to give businesses a heads up,” he said.

But District residents are already eyeing the plastic straw ban with disdain. While Rybarczyk was explaining the city ordinance to a Sakura Japan cashier at Union Station, one customer waiting for his lunch decried the ban as “stupid.”

“What, is this California now?” said one customer, who declined to be identified. “All these laws are just spreading from California. Everything is getting taken away from us, man. This is so stupid.”

D.C. is the latest jurisdiction to ban plastic straws, following the lead of Seattle and San Francisco— both of which have instituted similar bans.

ICYMI: Oregon Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Sexually Abusing Children at Orphanage in Cambodia

EUGENE, Ore.—On January 18, 2019, Daniel Stephen Johnson, 40, of Coos Bay, Oregon, was sentenced to life in federal prison for repeatedly sexually abusing children who lived at an orphanage operated by the defendant in Cambodia.

In a jury trial ending on May 16, 2018, Johnson was convicted on six counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place and one count each of travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and aggravated sexual assault with a child. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison on each count of illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place, 30 years for traveling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, and life in prison for aggravated sexual assault with children. The sentences for engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place will run consecutively.

According to court documents and information shared during trial, between November 2005 and his arrest in December 2013, Johnson systematically and repeatedly molested children who lived at an unlicensed orphanage he started and ran in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Johnson funded the orphanage by soliciting donations from church groups in Oregon, California, Texas and elsewhere. Ten Cambodian victims—who ranged in age from seven to 18 years old at the time of abuse—have disclosed Johnson’s abuse or attempted abuse.

Victims described a pattern of molestation that includes, among other things, Johnson making them perform oral sex on him and anally raping them. Multiple victims said they were, on numerous occasions, awoken to Johnson abusing them. Following the abuse, Johnson would sometimes provide his impoverished victims with small amounts of money or food. On one occasion, Johnson gave a victim the equivalent of $2.50 in Cambodian currency.

In 2013, a warrant was issued for Johnson’s arrest on an unrelated case by officials in Lincoln County, Oregon. Local law enforcement officers worked with the FBI to locate Johnson overseas. The FBI in turn worked with the U.S. Department of State to revoke Johnson’s passport based on the Oregon warrant. Through the work of the FBI, Action Pour Les Enfants, a non-governmental organization dedicated to ending child sexual abuse and exploitation in Cambodia, and the Cambodian National Police (CNP), Johnson was located in Phnom Penh.

On December 9, 2013, CNP arrested Johnson. Based on disclosures made by children at the orphanage, Cambodian officials charged Johnson and detained him pending trial. In May 2014, Johnson was convicted by a Cambodian judge of performing indecent acts on one or more children at the orphanage and sentenced to a year in prison. Following his release from prison, Johnson was escorted back to the U.S. by the FBI.

Based on the sexual-abuse allegations against him, the FBI undertook a lengthy investigation of Johnson. During the course of their investigation, agents interviewed more than a dozen children and adults who had resided at the orphanage. Many of the interviews were audio- and video-taped and, in several instances, conducted in Cambodia by trained child-forensic interviewers. Some victims were interviewed multiple times before disclosing Johnson’s abuse.

Johnson was indicted by a federal grand jury in Eugene, Oregon on December 20, 2014 on one count of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place. Seven additional charges were added by superseding indictment on May 17, 2017.

While in custody awaiting trial, Johnson made multiple efforts to tamper with witnesses and obstruct justice. Johnson contacted his victims online, encouraging them to lie and offering money and gifts. One message, sent via his relative’s Facebook account to an adult in Cambodia, discussed visiting a victim’s family and encouraging them to convince the victim to retract their statement, potentially in exchange for $10,000. Another message explains the need for a victim to say they were under duress and “pushed by police” to thumbprint a document.
