Seven Other Top State Department/Clinton Aides Must also Respond to Judicial Watch Queries
(Washington, DC) — Judicial Watch announced today that United States District Judge Royce C. Lamberth ruled that discovery can begin in Hillary Clinton’s email scandal. Obama administration senior State Department officials, lawyers, and Clinton aides will now be deposed under oath. Senior officials — including Susan Rice, Ben Rhodes, Jacob Sullivan, and FBI official E.W. Priestap — will now have to answer Judicial Watch’s written questions under oath. The court rejected the DOJ and State Department’s objections to Judicial Watch’s court-ordered discovery plan. (The court, in ordering a discovery plan last month, ruled that the Clinton email system was “one of the gravest modern offenses to government transparency.”)
Judicial Watch’s discovery will seek answers to:
Whether Clinton intentionally attempted to evade the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by using a non-government email system;
whether the State Department’s efforts to settle this case beginning in late 2014 amounted to bad faith; and
whether the State Department adequately searched for records responsive to Judicial Watch’s FOIA request.
Discovery is scheduled to be completed within 120 days. The court will hold a post-discovery hearing to determine if Judicial Watch may also depose additional witnesses, including Clinton and her former Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills.
Judge Lamberth ordered written responses under oath to Judicial Watch’s questions from Obama administration senior officials Rice, Rhodes and Sullivan, and former FBI official Priestap. Rice and Rhodes will answer interrogatories under oath on the Benghazi scandal. Rejecting the State and Justice Department objections to discovery on the infamous Benghazi talking points, Judge Lamberth reiterated:
Yet Rice’s talking points and State’s understanding of the attack play an unavoidably central role in this case: information about the points’ development and content, as well as their discussion and dissemination before and after Rice’s appearances could reveal unsearched, relevant records; State’s role in the points’ content and development could shed light on Clinton’s motives for shielding her emails from FOIA requesters or on State’s reluctance to search her emails.

Embattled acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker will testify before Congress on Feb. 8, setting up dual blockbuster hearings that week as House Democrats launch their much-awaited oversight into Donald Trump’s presidency.
The House Judiciary Committee announced Tuesday that Whitaker will appear one day after Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, testifies before the House Oversight Committee. The two hearings, both made-for-TV moments, will almost certainly create a headache for the president as special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into his 2016 presidential campaign enters its 20th month.
Oversight Democrats are expected to ask Cohen about Trump’s campaign-time payments to women alleging extramarital affairs with the president as well as his financial dealings with Russia. Judiciary Democrats will press Whitaker, once a fervent critic of special counsel Robert Mueller, about why he ignored ethics recommendations to recuse himself from the Russia probe.
Democrats have long suspected that Trump planted Whitaker at the department as a spy, someone delegated to undercutting the Mueller probe. They’ll grill him on his interactions with Mueller as well as any information he passed on to Trump allies.
“Per our practice in hearings of this nature, the Committee will expect you to provide direct answers to questions asked by members of both parties,” Nadler said in a Tuesday letter to Whitaker announcing the news. “If you plan to invoke executive privilege in an attempt to avoid answering any particular question, I ask that you consult with the White House well in advance of the hearing.”
Whitaker’s hearing, which will occur at 9:30 a.m. that morning, may be the first with a sitting administration official since Democrats took over the House on Jan. 3. Republicans have argued that Whitaker need not appear since his replacement, William Barr, will likely be confirmed by the Senate by then.
Depending on Barr’s confirmation date, Whitaker may be former acting attorney general at the time he testifies.
House Democrats had hoped to haul Whitaker in this January. But the shutdown, combined with what Democrats view as Justice Department stonewalling, delayed that goal.
The acting attorney general had promised Democrats last fall to answer questions once they took control of the House. But in recent days, top Justice officials have cited the shutdown and a busy schedule for Whitaker as a reason he cannot commit to a date.
Nadler, however, threatened to subpoena Whitaker last week, pushing talks along and settling ultimately on Feb. 8.
Judiciary sources say Whitaker will appear even if the government is still shutdown. Justice officials had tried to argue that Whitaker could not testify while agencies were shuttered. But Nadler cited DOJ rules from the 1990s actually stating the contrary.
Whitaker’s hearing comes as Nadler’s panel is gearing up investigations on policy fonts as well, particularly immigration. On Monday, the committee asked Homeland Security, Justice and Health and Human Services departments to preserve all documents related to Trump’s separation of immigrant families at the border last summer.
Nadler and more than 180 additional Democratic cosponsors also introduced the “Keeping Families Together Act of 2019,” legislation barring Trump officials from separating children from their parents.
“As this new Congress begins, the House Judiciary Committee will make good on its promise to the American people to hold the Trump Administration accountable for the abhorrent family separation policy that ripped children from the arms of their parents,” Nadler said. “These document requests, many of them sought for months, are just the start. We have already put the relevant agencies on notice that in the coming weeks we will schedule hearings in order to finally hold the Administration accountable for its policies and conduct.

Since November 30th, when the Acting Attorney General committed to appear for a January hearing, the House Judiciary Committee has been working to schedule an appropriate time for his testimony. On January 9th, Chairman Nadler laid out the Committee’s oversight priorities with regards to the Department and cited two separate OLC determinations that Justice Department officials are required to provide testimony at hearings, even during a funding lapse.

He reportedly paid $117 million for a home in Woodside in 2013, the highest price ever in the U.S. This glass and concrete building, on the other hand, could be found in any part of suburban America. The room where I wait is spartan. There is an empty desk in one corner, and a conference table with a fake-wood veneer. I try to read the pale gray scribbles on a whiteboard, hoping they might shed light on what happens in this place, but the surface has been too well scrubbed. The interior glass walls of the conference room have been lined with a white, papery substance that turns anyone on the other side into apparitions.
Finally, Rajeev Misra, CEO of the entity overseeing the Vision Fund, rushes into the room, smiling broadly and apologizing profusely. The strategy appears to be a sound one, as a number of Democrats have publicly stated that they support funding for at least a partial border wall or fence.
Freshman Democratic California Rep. Katie Hill told CNN last week that she would “vote for some money for physical barriers.”
Democratic Washington Rep. Adam Smith conceded that “the wall is not in itself a bad idea” and that he voted for some fencing in the past, but claimed that the president has not appropriately justified adding more barriers on the border.
“If we have a partial wall, if we have fencing, if we have technology used to keep our borders safe, all of that is fine,” Democratic Illinois Rep. Cheri Bustos said on CNN before admonishing the president for refusing to accept anything less than $5.7 billion for a barrier.
Democratic California Rep. John Garamendi similarly said that he would support a border fence, stating, “Democrats have repeatedly said that we will support border security, we will support all of its elements including fences.”

Republican Virginia Rep. Denver Riggleman claimed on WMAL’s “Mornings on the Mall” yesterday that even more Democrats admit privately that they support some kind of physical barrier.
Notably, Trump is no longer proposing a solid concrete wall across the entire border as he hinted at during the 2016 campaign. The same day I found this info out, I received a letter from my car insurance company where my insurance was canceled for having had an accident in New Jersey in a SUV that I did not own, or was I in New Jersey …nope. so I call my insurance carrier. That call was shocking to me. I was actually cancelled because I live and listed my residence in Maryland. The vehicle resident was listed in New Jersey. You cannot list two primary residence under one social security number. Needless to say, my insurance was reinforced and the vehicle owner in New Jersey was charged with insurance fraud. I used this info to present to my State Senator, who helped me to get a new social security number. I gave up 10 years of earned income towards my social security retirement fund because these illegal's were filing social security taxes for refunds . They used me for work, loans, housing, insurance. I am still angry. The time frame was 2002 when I discovered the thefts.
These illegal's lived off of me…however, they paid their debts as not to get caught. I had the local field office the FBI involved and the Federal Trade Commission involved. Whether Clinton intentionally attempted to evade the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by using a non-
government email system; whether the State Department’s efforts to settle this case beginning in late 2014
amounted to bad faith; and whether the State Department adequately searched for records responsive to
Judicial Watch’s FOIA request.
Discovery is scheduled to be completed within 120 days. The court will hold a post-discovery hearing to
determine if Judicial Watch may also depose additional witnesses, including Clinton and her former Chief of
Staff Cheryl Mills.
Judge Lamberth ordered written responses under oath to Judicial Watch’s questions from Obama administration
senior officials Rice, Rhodes and Sullivan, and former FBI official Priestap. Rice and Rhodes will answer
interrogatories under oath on the Benghazi scandal. Rejecting the State and Justice Department objections
to discovery on the infamous Benghazi talking points, Judge Lamberth reiterated:

Senate ignores Trump, votes to consider bill reversing decision to lift Russia sanctions
The Senate voted Tuesday to take up legislation to reverse the Trump administration's decision to lift sanctions on three Russian companies, after several Republicans went against President Trump by backing it. Republicans joined Democrats to bring the measure up for debate just hours after Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin met privately with GOP lawmakers to convince them the sanctions should be lifted. The measure is ultimately destined for defeat later in the week because it must pass a 60-vote threshold, and the 60 votes aren't there. But the votes on Tuesday give Democrats at least a day of floor time to argue that the sanctions should remain in place.
Democrats demanded a vote on the resolution after the Treasury Department announced plans to drop sanctions on three Russian companies because they are no longer controlled by Oleg Deripaska. The Russian billionaire remains blacklisted by the U.S. because of his role in Russia's interference with the U.S. election in 2016. The Trump administration says it made the right decision because Deripaska was no longer on the board of the companies and because the sanctions were aimed at him, not the companies.
Mnuchin said the three companies had been listed only because of their connection to Deripaska, and he said career intelligence and Treasury officials agreed to lift the sanctions. “We put together an agreement that we think meets the laws and the requirements to delist them,” Mnuchin said.
But Democrats and some Republicans believe the sanctions should remain. On Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called up the resolution disapproving of the Trump administration's decision, which is allowed under the law that calls for the sanctions. Under that law, passage of the resolution by the House and Senate would reverse the Trump administration's decision. Schumer called the plan to lift sanctions a "kiss-up" to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., moved to block Schumer's effort, but the Senate rejected McConnell's effort in a 42-57 vote that saw several Republicans vote with Democrats. The Senate then voted 57-42 to take up the resolution. Republican leaders said before the vote that the sanctions should be lifted because the Russian companies agreed to downgrade Deripaska's role in how they operate. "They did follow the rules, they did the things we asked them to do, and under the sanctions law theoretically they ought to have the sanctions lifted," Senate Majority Whip John Thune, R-S.D., told the Washington Examiner. But others, such as Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., disagreed. Rubio told the Washington Examiner that while Deripaska's role seems to have been diminished, "I still think he retains operational control of the company."

Texas Rangers Hall of Fame pitcher John Wetteland was arrested Monday over accusations that he sexually assaulted a child for two years starting at the age of 4.
Wetteland, 52, is charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14. The Trophy Club resident posted $25,000 bond and was released from custody the same day as his arrest.
He forced a relative to perform a sex act on him, according to his arrest-warrant affidavit, beginning in 2004 when the child was 4 years old. It happened twice more during a two-year period, the accuser said.
The abuse occurred at Wetteland’s home in Bartonville, about 10 miles south of Denton, the affidavit said.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services referred the case to Bartonville police Wednesday, according to Chief Bobby Dowell. Bartonville police issued a warrant for Wetteland’s arrest, which the Denton County Sheriff’s Office served.
His former wife declined to comment Tuesday. The pair divorced in 2015.
One of Wetteland’s daughters said in a Facebook post that the allegations were untrue and would be disproven in court.
Wetteland coached for the Rangers in the minor and major leagues before joining the Washington Nationals in 2006.
