California court blocks pardon of man who killed at age 14
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a rare step, the California Supreme Court has blocked Gov. Jerry Brown’s attempt to issue a pardon to a 37-year-old Cambodian refugee who killed a woman when he was 14 years old.
The court gave no reason for the rejection, but earlier noted it only had the authority to do so in the case of an “abuse of power.” Brown’s pardon would have effectively stopped Borey Ai’s deportation to Cambodia, a nation where his mother was born but he has never seen.
The governor in the last 10 months has pardoned seven ex-convicts who otherwise faced the threat of deportation to Cambodia, drawing the ire of President Donald Trump, whose administration has stepped up efforts to deport immigrants with criminal convictions.
It takes at least four votes of the seven justices to block pardons. The unsigned ruling Wednesday didn’t say how many justices voted to block the pardon. The governor is required to obtain the court’s approval for pardons and sentence commutations for twice-convicted felons.
Appellate lawyer David Ettinger said it appears the last time the court rejected a governor’s pardon occurred in 1930.

Been doing a deep dive into the Family First Prevention
Services Act bill.
Loads and loads of information in here. Some of the bill is well-intended, but the big, national impact is really limiting campus-based and congregate care in lieu of family foster. Basically, the bill believes that kids in foster care do better in families (Annie E. Casey….huge non-profit tied to Save the Children pushes this). It is just simply not true that all kids in foster care do better in families than on a campus or residential setting. Anecdotally, easily 80% of foster families are involved with physical or emotional abuse (or death). This simply does not happen in residential placements because the oversight is so stringent.
There is nearly zero oversight on the family foster care sector. This bill increases regulations and expectations (and limits the kids coming into) residential placements through foster care.
The bill was originally proposed in 2015 and couldn't get passed.
They then tried to sneak it into the CURES Act, which was all about the opioid epidemic. That didn't work either….
Then they finally snuck it into a continuing resolution and it went through. There is plenty of information easily accessible regarding this bill.
What makes it spoopy:
-Failed twice….why?
-Had to be snuck in, why?
-Why is it focused on destroying residential foster care placements?
-Why does Annie E. Casey really, really want kids to be with foster families who have nearly no oversight?
-Why does this increase requirements for residential foster and NOT family foster?
This bill is creepy and made even more so because it is RIGHT now being implemented nation-wide, this is HUGE!!!!

On May 6th, Halsey Douglas was at his home uneasily eyeing the afternoon thunderstorms and, once again according to Hoehling, even having an instinctive feeling that he’d not see his brother alive again.
As for the events of the last flight of the Hindenburg, little is actually known about Douglas’ experiences on the trip. One thing is certain, however: whereas several books (and even the 1975 movie with George C. Scott) have Douglas receiving a mysterious coded telegram onboard the ship, this simply did not happen. Author Michael M. Mooney, in writing his 1972 book "The Hindenburg," (succumbing, to an even greater extent than Hoehling, to a need to invent drama for his book) concocted that story from events that allegedly took place involving Mooney’s father, James D. Mooney. James Mooney had been President of Overseas Operations for General Motors during the 1930s and was allegedly (according to his son) the GM executive to whom Edward Douglas reported in Frankfurt. Apparently, James Mooney received a telegram much like the one eventually attributed to Douglas, and years later his son Michael simply added it to his fictionalized account of Douglas' last days, admitting as much in the acknowledgement section of his book.
What is known for certain is that Edward Douglas was in the passenger area on the Hindenburg as it came in to land at Lakehurst, NJ on the evening of May 6th, 1937, and was probably in the starboard lounge when the fire broke out. He never made it out of the ship, and his brother Halsey, who had been at the air station to greet him, identified his body either later that night or early the next day. its pretty straightforward - recall the big case when ocare passed where everyone watched as the decision was issued and first exclaimed it was struck down - well the firstr part of the roberts opinion did just that - SCOTUS ruled that the mandate was an UNCONSTITUTIONAL excercise of the commerce power - and that was 100% correct
within a few minutes however it was realized the law had been saved by a legal magic - SCOTUS declared that since the congress labeled it a TAX is was legal as congress power to tax is much broader than powrs under the commerce clause - so in effect it was a farce - congress cannot force people to buy insurance but they can force people to pay a tax penalty for not having it.
this turned out to be the key to its demise today - and is a huge victory for POTUS - because even though the individual mandate was NOT repealed POTUS DID get congress to elimiate the tax penalty in the 2017 tax bill.
So again - remember the Supreme Court held the Individual Mandate was unconstitutional under the Interstate Commerce Clause but could fairly be read as an exercise of Congress’s Tax Power because it triggered a tax.

So until today the Individual Mandate continued to mandate the purchase of health insurance but THERE WAS NO MOAR TAX PENALTY. So that meant that the only basis for the mandate in the changed law was the Commerce Clause - NOW remember SCOTUS ruled that this was NOT a legal basis to support the mandate
BUT THAT WAS ALL THAT WAS LEFT - and so the court today simply concluded - NO TAX - NO MANDATE - they couched the decision under a legal doctrine known as "severability" which is a judicial doctrine that attempts to salvage a huge and complex congressional policy scheme (law) even when one portion is illegal.
specifically then - can Obamacare be upheld WITHOUT the unconstititional portion (the mandate based on cmmerce clause alone)? - they concluded NO - the TAX was an essential element upon which the entire structure rested and therefore the WHOLE thing must be thrown out.

Canadian consular officials have had no access to them.
Their detentions ratchet up pressure on Canada, which arrested Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of telecommunications giant Huawei, on Dec. 1 at the request of the United States. The U.S. wants her extradited to face charges that she and her company misled banks about the company’s business dealings in Iran. A Canadian judge released Meng on bail Tuesday.
The case has set off a diplomatic furor among the three nations in which Canada has been stuck in the middle.
Until now, Canada had a largely good relationship with China, forged by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s father, late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who helped establish the one-China formula that enabled many other countries to recognize China in the 1970s. Canada acknowledged there is one government of China and does not officially recognize Taiwan.
China has since become Canada’s second-largest trading partner, after the United States. Chinese investment has powered real estate booms in Vancouver and Toronto. I understand how you are looking at it, which is a better way than I use to see it. I was an atheist, probably due to my work in science. But science can work you out of atheism if you look at the evidence and go where it leads. Most of your objection here is an objection to "Christian doctrine" which is religion.
God and Religion are two different things. Religion is easy to prove. The existence of God is more difficult to prove but absolutely do-able with the evidence we now have. That is what I discovered after pouring over the evidence.
The only thing that bothers me about all these "beliefs" that teach "we are one" with God, or worse, that we ARE God, is that these concepts view God as a mindless force, as if there were only a "good force" and an "Evil force.
Consciousness and personality are aspects of reality that science can not explain but they are scientifically observable facts in front of every one of us, that every one of us has intimate experience with.
Science would never dare try to tell us that consciousness does not exist.
Today, physics understands that what we observe can be altered by observing it. Conscious observation changes the behavior of photons in the slit experiments for instance. When Jesus cursed the fig tree, and a few hours later the Apostles freaked because the tree died, Jesus explained that we would be capable of moving mountains, not just killing trees someday. Today a physics major would get what he was saying even if the physics major had not figured out how to "do it".
The the conscious intellect that created all that we observe (an everything there is that we can not see with our limited senses) does indeed have consciousness in every way that we understand it as a personal experience, and "it" is a "person" in every sense that we are "persons".
To deny this sense of "I AM" is to deny the conscious will of the creator to create intentionally, as a will-full act on his part, without us, and to deny the creators ability to communicate with his creations if he chooses to do that also.
This being said, it is we who are created, and God does invite conscious individuals to life without death, which is very much sustained by the creator himself, so, you are not too far off.
There is an element of choice to it, on our part. We are not all "automatically" God.
If you want to understand how it is that God was able to prove his existence to this x-atheist, you need to go to where God laid out his proofs. It is much like looking at "Q proofs". God uses "future proves past" and "How many times before it is mathematically impossible".
God wrote to prove his own existence to us. He chose two specific ancient languages to accomplish his communication "proof task".
One of those languages is now known to be the most sophisticated code language ever developed by mankind. Why?
Because it holds the greatest amount of information in the least amount of bandwidth.
