Over and out: Chicago CB radio-maker struggles to adjust to Trump tariffs

Cedar Electronics has been selling CB radios to American truckers since the 1960s, helping connect the workers who keep the U.S. economy rolling. But these days Cedar's business isn't exactly trucking along.

The Chicago-headquartered company is racing around Asia looking for other countries to host its manufacturing, after the radios Cedar makes in China and brings to the United States were hit with one of the Trump administration's 25 percent tariffs this summer, making them more expensive to import.

The White House's decision to extend its tariff campaign to an even broader range of Chinese imports starting Monday is putting similar pressure on more U.S. companies to uproot their Chinese manufacturing, and to consider layoffs, price hikes and investment cuts.

"We are looking as fast as possible to find an alternative [manufacturing] place, but we're dealing with a very unstable situation," said Cedar vice president Mark Karnes, referring to President Trump's penchant for issuing policy decisions by tweet. He added: "As a business, my government just clubbed me over the head."

The Consumer Technology Association alone has heard from hundreds of U.S. member companies hurt by the levies, many of which are small businesses ill equipped for this sort of tumult, said Sage Chandler, vice president for international trade at the lobbying group.

"Eighty percent of our companies are small and medium enterprises," she said. "They don't have trade experts on staff. They don't have customs people on staff."

More than 80 industry and agricultural groups this monthbacked a multimillion-dollar campaign, "Tariffs Hurt the Heartland," to oppose the White House effort. The groups are holding town-hall events and running advertising arguing that the tariffs are causing job loss and higher prices for consumers.

Sellers of consumer electronics and appliances are in a particular bind. Many shifted their manufacturing to China years ago to take advantage of lower labor costs. As manufacturing grew in China and withered elsewhere, China became the sole source of parts for some products, making companies more reliant on the country.

Ford adviser allegedly said in July that a ‘strategy’ would ’emerge’ to defeat Kavanaugh nomination

Ricki Seidman — who was involved in Anita Hill’s 1991 sexual harassment testimony against Clarence Thomas prior to his Supreme Court confirmation and is now advising Christine Blasey Ford regarding her sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh — allegedly said in July that a “strategy” would “emerge” in the ensuing days and weeks to defeat Kavanaugh.

Seidman made the statement in a conference call with the American Constitution Society, BizPac Review said.

“I do think that over the coming days and weeks there will be a strategy that will emerge, and I think it’s possible that that strategy might ultimately defeat the nominee,” Seidman allegedly said in an audio recording. “And whether or not it ultimately defeats the nominee, it will, I think, help people understand why it’s so important that they vote and the deeper principles that are involved in it.”

The audio was posted to YouTube by the GOP War Room — the “official account for the Republican National Committee’s War Room” that focuses on “Democrats’ scandals and hypocrisy, media commentary, and [President Donald] Trump’s accomplishments.”

Neither Seidman nor the American Constitution Society immediately replied Monday to TheBlaze’s requests for comment on the audio.

Exactly what “strategy” might be used to derail Kavanaugh’s nomination isn’t noted in the audio, but Seidman allegedly added that “as the strategy becomes clearer” it should “partly be, beyond Kavanaugh … what we want the court to be, what the court is supposed to be under the Constitution, and what putting Kavanaugh on the court means for the institution.”

The date of the conference call isn’t clear, but there is a reference at the 4:45 mark in the audio to “anyone who read Akhil Amar’s op-ed in the New York Times today.” That piece, in which the Yale Law School professor backs Kavanaugh for a spot on the high court, was published July 9 — the same day Trump announced his nomination.

Ford’s letter to Democratic U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.) regarding her allegations against Kavanaugh was dated July 30.

Politico reported Friday on Seidman advising Ford, noting that the Democratic operative said, “I believe her, and I think she’s very courageous for coming this far.”

Her bio added that she has “held several senior White House positions during the Clinton Administration, including White House Deputy Communications Director, Counselor to the Chief of Staff, and Director of Scheduling and Advance for the President; and she subsequently served as Deputy Associate Attorney General in the Department of Justice. She headed the 1992 Clinton-Gore campaign’s ‘War Room,’ and directed a similar effort for the successful passage of the Clinton economic plan in 1993.”

Politico added that Republicans viewed the revelation that Seidman is advising Ford as an indication that Democrats are attempting to ramp up her accusation to kill the Kavanaugh confirmation.

“This feels more like a Democratic super PAC than a legal effort to get at the truth,” a senior Republican official told the outlet regarding Seidman’s role with Ford.

“If you’re concerned about an appearance of partisanship, hiring a Democratic operative with a history of smearing conservative judges doesn’t exactly mitigate that,” Cassie Smedile, press secretary for the Republican National Committee, added to Politico.

22 Arrested for Links to Attack on Military Parade - Iranian Intel Ministry

Iran's Intelligence Ministry announced on Monday that authorities have apprehended nearly two dozen in connection to the deadly attack on an Iranian military parade on Saturday which left 25 dead and 53 wounded.

"Some 22 people involved in the attack in Ahvaz have been identified and arrested… weapons, exclusive material and communication equipment were seized in the house that belonged to the five-member terrorist group that carried out the attack," a statement from the intelligence agency said, according to Tasnim News Agency.

The military reportedly vowed a "deadly and unforgettable" response to the terrorist attack which was conducted in the southern city of Ahvaz during an annual military parade.

Twelve members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) were reportedly killed after the terrorists opened fire. Children and journalists were also among the casualties, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif. "Terrorists recruited, trained, armed & paid by a foreign regime have attacked Ahvaz," he wrote. "Iran holds regional terror sponsors and their US masters accountable for such attacks. Iran will respond swiftly and decisively in defense of Iranian lives."

IRGC Lieutenant Commander Brigadier General Hossein Salami blamed Israel, the United States, and Saudi Arabia for the attack at a Saturday funeral for the victims. He promised that Iran would have a "devastating" response to the attackers and their sponsors.

On Monday, US Defense Secretary James "Mad Dog" Mattis said he was not concerned with Iran's threat of revenge, adding that the suggestion the US had anything to do with the attack "ludicrous."

A man who authorities say amassed the largest stockpile of child pornography in Pennsylvania history has been sentenced to 100 years in federal prison.

Lawrence “Larry” Jamieson Jr., 59, of Malvern, was sentenced last week on charges related to the sexual abuse of a young girl, the manufacture of hundreds of sexually explicit videos and photos of the abuse and his collection of child porn that he downloaded from the internet.

The U.S. attorney for Eastern Pennsylvania said Jamieson’s collection, which he began 15 years ago, contained “some of the most demented images imaginable” of young children enduring sexual abuse.

“Jamieson is the worst of the worst type of criminal – a child predator who derives satisfaction from abusing society’s must vulnerable members,” U.S. Attorney William McSwain said in a statement. “The details in this case are horrific. This defendant amassed a collection of child pornography that exceeded 14.4 million images, reportedly the largest collection in Pennsylvania.

“And on top of that, he concocted and carried out a plan to sexually abuse a child within his care – someone he knew was susceptible to his influence. For more than 18 months, Jamieson and his co-defendant repeatedly lied to his victim and engaged in an unconscionable course of sexual abuse and exploitation.”

McSwain’s staff reported that Jamieson targeted a girl who he knew was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. She also has other learning disabilities and mental health issues.

“He targeted this underage girl by first recruiting another adult male to pose as a teenaged boy so that they could dupe the victim into believing he was her boyfriend and gain her trust,” McSwain said in a news release. “The ‘boyfriend’ then engaged her in sexual activity, photographed and videotaped her, and distributed the videos and images back to Jamieson. Her images were also distributed out to others over the internet.”

The girl was 15 and 16 at the time of the abuse.

The Daily Local News in Exton reported that the sexual assault victim is now 19 and living with her mother. She has trouble eating and sleeping and cannot forget the images of her that were distributed over the internet.

“She is completely broken,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Rotella told the newspaper. “She just feels like she can’t move forward.”

Jamieson, who pleaded guilty on the charges in September 2017, apologized to the court, the girl and her mother and to his own family during his sentencing hearing, the Daily Local News reported. He is part of a well-known and respected family in Philadelphia’s Main Line community.

His late father, Larry Jamieson Sr., was a successful insurance agent and once served as a member of Downingtown Borough Council. Jamieson’s mother owns a well-known interior design business in Haverford, the newspaper reported.

WPVI in Philadelphia reported that Jamieson and his accomplice, John Brown, of Norristown, were arrested in August 2016 after the Willistown Police Department received a complaint about the sexual abuse. Police officials said at the time that Jamieson and Brown convinced the victim that Brown, 23, was a 17-year-old cyber school student.

Brown changed his appearance to look younger, the news station said. Once he began abusing the girl, Jamieson also joined in.

“Even after decades of serving in law enforcement, the scope and nature of these crimes are staggering,” Willistown Township Police Chief John Narcise said in a statement obtained by the news station. “I have never seen as large a trove of child pornography in the history of Chester County, and the rest of the conduct is unspeakable. I do not know what kind of a depraved mind could possibly enjoy this sickening abuse of innocent children."

Rotella said prosecutors are pleased with Jamieson’s sentence.

“He will never be getting out (of prison) again,” she told the Daily Local News. “He is just a true predator and, if he had ever been released, it is a virtual certainty that he would have victimized someone else.”

Brown, now 27, has also pleaded guilty to similar charges and is scheduled for sentencing later this year, the newspaper reported.
