I dont think you would get a rise in pressure in the line from seismic activity or any other natural way. Kinda only happens on purpose. There are many safeguards that are in place on a gas main that shutoff supply if it detects excessive pressure. They would had to have disabled those and then turned it up. NatGasFag here. Posters are saying natural gas relief valves are failing. A search of natural gas relief valves are what we call "regulators" in the industry. They attach to the meter manifold at the house and are spring loaded mechanical devices that reduce the pressure of the gas coming from the mainline to an acceptable usable lower pressure. They are always located on the outside of the house and usually up against the house. They could be individually tampered with using some basic tools but there's no way for them to fail en masse simultaneously. Taking the spring out of them would push a large pressure of gas inside the house and snuff the pilot lights and fill the basement and then the house with gas. If you were home you would smell it. If you were away the house would become a bomb and when your fridge kicked on, the house would blow

Most Natural Gas equipment is made in the United States (to my knowledge) by only a few companies like Honeywell, Singer, American Meter, Itron. If they were failing it was most likely sabotage. NatGasFag here. If the houses were on a "low pressure" system, there may have been no regulators on the manifolds and the manifolds could be located inside the basement. If someone then went to a regulator station which are usually little brick buildings scattered about town where they reduce higher pressure transmission lines to low pressure distribution lines, and opened up a valve to blast gas into a low pressure line that is not designed for that, you would have the same effect as a failed regulator I suppose. But that should have set off some serious monitoring alarms

Depending on how long the gas has leaked, the pressure at which it leaks (bigger leak, higher pressure) house will fill quicker. There are what are known as Explosive / flammable limits Air to Gas mix too high, won't light, mix too low won't light, just right it will light off. Millennials and hipsters beware: big government wants to come for your e-cigarettes if teenagers do not stop using them.
On Wednesday, the Food and Drug Administration threatened to remove from the market some of the popular vaping products of five top-selling national brands unless they submit plans to prevent minors from using their products.
“The agency is asking each company to submit to FDA within 60 days plans describing how they will address the widespread youth access and use of their products,” the FDA said in a statement. “If they fail to do so, or if the plans do not appropriately address this issue, the FDA will consider whether it would be appropriate to revisit the current policy that results in these products remaining on the market without a marketing order from the agency. This could mean requiring these brands to remove some or all of their flavored products that may be contributing to the rise in youth use from the market until they receive premarket authorization and otherwise meet all of their obligations under the law.”
FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb says he recognizes the benefits of e-cigarettes for adults trying to quit smoking combustible cigarettes, but “that work can’t come at the expense of kids.”
“We cannot allow a whole new generation to become addicted to nicotine,” he said. Gottlieb said he believes youth are attracted to the e-cigarettes because of “certain flavors.”
Reason explains that Gottlieb is considering "reneging on the FDA's four-year extension of the deadline for seeking regulatory approval to continue selling e-cigarettes, which would wreak havoc with a market that he concedes has great potential for reducing smoking-related disease and death.”
“The FDA now believes that youth use of e-cigarettes is reaching epidemic proportions,” the statement reads. “This belief is based on not just the results of the agency’s enforcement actions, but also recent sales trends, news coverage, increased concerns among kids, parents and educators, as well as preliminary data that will be finalized and released in the coming months.”
The FDA claims that “more than 2 million middle and high school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2017,” but Reason disputes this number, noting that it includes respondents who vaped even once during the previous month.
The statement also states that the agency issued 1,300 warning letters and fines to retailers who were caught illegally selling products to minors in “an undercover blitz of brick-and-mortar and online stores this summer.”
Smoking of conventional cigarettes last year hit a record low of 9.7% in comparison to 36.5% in 1997, according to the Monitoring the Future Study.

I recall seeing a movie years ago where there was a terrorist plot that involved putting too much pressure in gas lines.... still this whole gas fires scenario in so many houses does not sound right. Seems like any good engineer would consider problems that could arise like pressure regulators failing and massive leaks caused by ruptured lines and operator error so that there would be automatic shut off valves in place.
