The early satellites did photography with camera and film, and dropped the film cannister into the atmosphere where it parachuted to earth and was supposed to be "hooked" by an airplane with a special claw, or fall into the ocean and retrieved by the Navy. It would sink in 2 days if not retrieved timely. The technology changed after the early versions.
