UFO hunters search for alien encounters on Israel's Mediterranean coast

At a secluded cliff overlooking the sea in Netanya, a group of UFO enthusiasts gathers after dark to investigate mysterious lights, share accounts of unexplained sightings and attempt to contact extraterrestrial beings through meditation
“Is that an airplane light?” I ask the experienced group of UFO investigators standing beside me in the darkness, on a rugged, towering cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea at the Iris Nature Reserve in Netanya, a coastal city north of Tel Aviv.
During our filmed interview, I spot a strange point of light on the horizon, moving rapidly from south to north before suddenly stopping in front of us. Within seconds, everyone is trying to figure out exactly what we are seeing.
Yoram Torbatian, 69, an energetic defense industry retiree and enthusiastic UFO investigator, gazes at the sky and announces: “I think we’re seeing the same unidentified flying object I saw and filmed right here on Sept. 3.”
Excitement builds among the local UFO enthusiasts, and everyone begins filming. I ask Torbatian whether he is certain it is not an airplane.
“Ninety percent,” he replies, before addressing the mysterious light with a request: “Our brothers from space, if you could come closer, we’d be happy to see you.”
Lior Abulafia, a veteran wildlife photographer who joined the ynet expedition to Netanya’s so-called Alien Hill, studies his camera screen and struggles to contain his excitement.
“Look at my phone. Do you see the energy it’s changing? Look, it’s like a light show, red, green. What is that? It’s strange.”
“Lior, you have a lot of experience photographing nature. What do you think we’re seeing?” I ask.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” he replies in astonishment, as our adrenaline reaches its peak.
But not everyone is rushing to declare an encounter with extraterrestrial beings.
Omri Gilkis, 38, a multidisciplinary artist who practices CE5 meditation, a technique whose followers believe can facilitate communication with extraterrestrials, offers a somewhat less exciting explanation.
“If the light is coming directly toward us, it could be an airplane and we’re seeing its headlight. Judging by the angle of the light, I think it’s an ordinary airplane.”
“It was probably an airplane, not an unexplained phenomenon,” Torbatian, the veteran UFO investigator, concludes with disappointment.
And so ends our first encounter with what, for a moment, appeared to be an unidentified flying object in the skies over Netanya.
Netanya’s Iris Nature Reserve UFO hunters
We rewind half an hour. Unidentified flying objects have recently returned to the headlines in Israel, partly following footage of an unusual aerial object spotted near the Lebanese border that raised suspicions of a drone infiltration.
But at Netanya’s Alien Hill, people are searching for something entirely different.
Following accounts from local UFO enthusiasts about bright lights and supposedly unexplained phenomena along the coastline, from Beit Yanai to southern Netanya, we set out after sunset for the mysterious hill beside the Iris Nature Reserve in the southern part of the city.
