The Pelican Nebula in Gas, Dust, and Stars
The Pelican Nebula is slowly being transformed. IC 5070 (an official designation) is divided from the larger North America Nebula by a molecular cloud filled with dark dust. The deep featured picture from Utah, USA incorporates 25 hours of exposure and brings out great details of this filamentary dust. The Pelican Nebula receives much study because it is a particularly active mix of star formation and evolving gas clouds. The light from young energetic stars is slowly transforming the cold gas to hot gas, with the advancing boundary between the two, known as an ionization front, visible in bright orange on the upper right. Particularly dense tentacles of cold gas remain. Millions of years from now, the Pelican Nebula, bounded by dark nebula LDN 935, might no longer be known as the Pelican, as the balance and placement of stars and gas will surely leave something that appears completely different.

Sep 7, 2026 (Bloomberg) –For decades, China’s maritime pressure on Taiwan centered on the major shipping strait separating the two neighbors. Now, Beijing is piling unprecedented pressure on its Pacific coast — a vital lifeline with US allies.
China has deployed on average two Coast Guard cutters per month east of Taiwan since June, after Japan and the Philippines announced plans to define their overlapping maritime border in the region. The appearance of those vessels marks the first time such patrols have been reported in the area in data going back to January 2025.
Patrols in these waters covered a vast area of 27,100 square nautical miles — more than twice the size of Taiwan — based on Bloomberg calculations using ship-tracking data. Ships stayed 30 nautical miles from the island’s eastern coast, remaining outside Taiwan-claimed waters.
Controlling the east would become essential to enforcing an effective blockade of Taiwan during a Chinese invasion of the island. Disrupting shipping off the Pacific coast would have global implications for commodities. Vessels ferrying oil, gas, iron ore and agricultural products made 527 transits through the east in June, exceeding the 420 through the generally busier Taiwan Strait, according to MarineTraffic data.
“If the Taiwan Strait is the front door, the eastern waters have often been treated as the back door,” said Jing Ge, instructor at Florida International University’s politics and international relations department. “Beijing wants to demonstrate this back door is no longer uncontested.”
While the Taiwan Strait handles almost half the world’s container fleet, the island’s eastern coast holds strategic importance by forming a maritime link with the Philippines and wider Pacific. Sea lanes in the area lead to key ports and military facilities, where the US and its regional allies could deliver supplies, while its deeper waters are ideal for submarines and undersea surveillance.
China’s Coast Guard has described such deployments as “routine law-enforcement” patrols, and has pledged to strengthen patrols to safeguard Beijing’s maritime rights. China has in the past also conducted military drills, including in this area, to rehearse encircling Taiwan, the self-governed island the Communist Party considers its own despite never having ruled it.
China’s activity is an attempt to “leverage ‘law enforcement patrols’ to establish a new normal for its maritime presence in the waters east of Taiwan,” the Taiwan Coast Guard Administration said in an email. Vessels have been dispatched in a timely manner in response, it added.
The US has called China’s actions “deeply destabilizing.” Despite that opposition, China’s Coast Guard announced last week it had deployed a new set of vessels east of Taiwan, sustaining its presence in the area.
Sea Boundaries
The role of China’s Coast Guard has moved beyond traditional law enforcement in recent years. That was laid bare by the introduction of a Coast Guard Law in 2021, which expanded the agency’s reach by authorizing it to “take all necessary measures, including the use of weapons” to protect what Beijing defines as China’s sovereignty.
Its new operations around Taiwan started on June 1, when China’s Coast Guard deployed two large patrol cutters — the 5,000-ton Daishan and the 3,000-ton Baita — to waters east of the island. Those vessels were previously used around the East China Sea, including the Japanese-controlled Senkaku islands, which China also claims and calls the Diaoyus.
Days earlier, Japan and the Philippines had announced plans to start negotiations to delimit their sea boundaries, as part of broader efforts from the two US allies to deepen their partnership. China opposed the talks, saying they’d interfered with its own maritime claims in that region.
“Beijing is using the joint statement issued by Japan and the Philippines as a pretext for greatly expanding its presence in these waters,” said Ryan Martinson, assistant professor at the China Maritime Studies Institute of the US Naval War College.
Later in June, China sent larger law enforcement ships, the 10,000-ton Haixun 09 and the 6,600-ton Haixun 06, to circle Taiwan. That rare multi-agency operation included China’s largest deep-sea survey ship and a rescue vessel.
During their five-day voyage, the vessels for the first time questioned foreign commercial ships passing along Taiwan’s Pacific coast. According to Chinese state media, the ships also “inspected” 198 passing vessels during the mission to reinforce traffic-control capabilities. It was unclear what the report meant by “inspected.”
“If those interactions become routine, the next question is whether Chinese authorities begin to request more information,’ said Zack Liao, political risk analyst at UK-based think tank China Strategic Risks Institute. “After that, whether they issue navigational instructions.”
US-based independent monitor Armed Conflict Location & Event Data has separately reported “a significant increase in research vessels operating at unusually slow speeds east of Taiwan” near undersea communications infrastructure.
China kept up the pressure by sending two more Coast Guard cutters to relieve the Daishan and Baita after a month in the area. That was described by a US congressional commission as Beijing’s way to establish a continuous presence.
“Using the CCG rather than the PLA Navy avoids military confrontations and allows Beijing to portray these activities as law enforcement while establishing the persistent presence necessary for a future blockade,” said the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission.
As the activity ramped up, Taiwan held military exercises in mid-July on Orchid and Green Islands, off its southeastern coast, for the first time in three decades. Weeks later, China staged passing exercises with Indonesia in the area, the first time Beijing has announced training with another country in the eastern waters.
China’s push to establish a presence east of Taiwan ultimately puts pressure on the US to respond, analysts say.
“What Beijing is testing east of Taiwan is whether it can gradually rewrite expectations about who governs navigation and maritime order in the Western Pacific,” said the China Strategic Risks Institute’s Liao. “That means the response should also be international.”

Iran Says to Announce New Restricted Zone in the Gulf in the Coming Days

DUBAI, Sept 7 (Reuters) – Iran said it will announce a new restricted zone in the Gulf in the coming days, along with maps of a new shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, as a weekend exchange of strikes on shipping sent oil prices higher on Monday.
The new restricted zone will begin from where the U.S. blockade of Iran begins and extend into areas of the Gulf, Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said on Sunday in an interview with state TV.
Few details were provided on the plan, but Rezaei said any ship entering the new zone would be added to a sanctions list.
In addition, maps detailing passage routes for the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy conduit largely closed to tanker traffic, would also be approved soon, Rezaei said.
“The maps of a new international corridor which lies in Iranian and Omani waters and in which Iran will have management have been agreed and should be signed in the coming days,” he said.
“We will only commit to the Strait of Hormuz being open when they (the Americans) stop the sabotage, threats and attacks on Iran,” Rezaei added.
Six months after U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran sparked the war, the conflict appears to be at a stalemate. A preliminary ceasefire accord reached in June has unraveled, and little progress has been made in diplomatic efforts to get the peace process back on track.
After a pause in military action for much of August, tit-for-tat strikes have resumed. U.S. forces struck three Iranian oil tankers on Saturday, U.S. Central Command said, including one off Kharg Island, Iran’s key oil export hub, following attacks by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on U.S. warships in the region.
Tehran has shown it retains the capability to attack U.S. interests in neighboring countries and to shut down oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of global oil supplies flowed prior to the conflict.
An average of 10 commodity ships transited the Strait per day in the past 10 days, the lowest since May, according to shipping data on Monday. That helped oil prices extend last week’s big gains, with Brent crude up 0.8% above $97 a barrel.
SANCTIONS, OIL BLOCKADE SQUEEZE ECONOMY
Iran has said it will step up efforts to tackle problems created by U.S. sanctions that are crippling its economy.
However, the U.S. campaign to throttle Iran’s economy by blockading its oil exports and stopping sanctions evasion is growing increasingly difficult to withstand, three senior Iranian sources have said.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said on Sunday that the U.S. should understand that the rules of the game have changed “before it is too late.”
“From now on, any attack against Iran’s interests and security will receive a faster, heavier and more painful response,” he said in a speech published on his Telegram channel.
Qalibaf said that alongside the military front, Iran’s main battle was now over production and people’s livelihoods.
He cited sharp currency fluctuations, inflation, unemployment and market management as major challenges, adding Iranians could tolerate hardship but not mismanagement or inaction and expected the government to act quickly.
Iran’s Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh said Tehran planned to respond to U.S. economic pressure with reforms and rejected the notion that sanctions would cause it to change course, according to state media on Sunday.
“They speak of economic pressure and isolation, of breaking off financial ties and they think that by pressuring the economy of a country they can change the decisions of its people,” Madanizadeh said.
“I have to clarify one point: The responsibility of reforming Iran’s economy is with its government and people, not with the U.S. Treasury.”
KHARG ISLAND HIT 550 TIMES IN PRIOR MONTHS, IRAN SAYS
Iran is the third-largest producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and exported 90% of its crude via its Kharg Island export hub before the war. Flows have been disrupted since a U.S. blockade of Iranian oil exports began in mid-April.
U.S. Central Command said on X that as of Sunday it had redirected 92 commercial vessels, disabled three and boarded two to ensure strict compliance with its blockade.
On August 31, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a one-line social media post accompanied by an AI-generated video depicting Kharg Island being “blown to smithereens.” Iranian authorities have vowed a strong response if Kharg is attacked.
In an interview aired on state TV on Sunday, Iran’s Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said the island had been hit around 550 times in previous months but continued to operate.
Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has pushed up fuel prices, weighing on Trump’s popularity as his Republican Party heads into elections in November when control of Congress is at stake.
However, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said oil was getting through the waterway.
“Our transits through the Strait are averaging over 9 million barrels a day now, and with the access pipelines that go around the strait, we’re probably two-thirds or more of pre-conflict flows. So Iranians are still causing trouble, but the United States Navy is winning that battle,” he told CNN.

Military officials told CBS News in an article published Monday that less than two weeks after it first used a high-energy laser weapon system to down suspicious drones, there has been a roughly 75% decrease in the number of drones probing the southern border in the Rio Grande Valley.
Reports of the new laser system emerged in February after the military used a laser to shoot a Customs and Border Protection drone in Texas, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration to close down more airspace near El Paso.
Military officials said they have since had better communication with the FAA and the system officially debuted last month when the military took down three drones on Aug. 25 and 26.
The military previously used jamming tools to send drones back to their place of origin, but can now eliminate a drone if it feels like a threat from a Mexican cartel.
"When you just send it back and then it comes back up or is defeated temporarily, but the game changer is ensuring that that tool can't be used again against you," Army Col. Robert Felicio, commander of the 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, told CBS News.
Since the beginning of the year, the military has stopped 300 drones officials believe are linked to Mexican cartels, including eleven the laser took down over a span of ten days. It was not clear how many drones the U.S. sees each day.
Military officials also acknowledged that the drop in drones could be attributed to other things, like cartels finding alternative routes, but that the drop occurred after the laser debuted.

A tiny asteroid named CERNQ52 entered Earth’s atmosphere over the Indian Ocean after being detected only hours earlier. Here’s what scientists know about the space rock and the danger it posed.
The asteroid was expected to burn up as it plunged through the atmosphere. This could have created a spectacular fireball in the sky.
For anyone watching from a dark location, the event may have appeared as a sudden bright flash.
CERNQ52 was spotted by the Mount Lemmon Survey in Arizona. The survey is part of the wider Catalina Sky Survey. These programmes search the sky for near-Earth objects.
The discovery gave astronomers only a short window to observe the asteroid. More observations were then used to calculate its trajectory.
This rapid tracking was crucial. A small asteroid can be difficult to detect until it gets relatively close to Earth.
How big is asteroid CERNQ52?
Despite the alarming situation, CERNQ52 was extremely small. Estimates put its size at roughly 0.6 to 1.2 metres across.
This is tiny compared with asteroids capable of causing widespread destruction. Its small size also meant that the atmosphere was likely to destroy most of it.
The asteroid would face enormous heating and pressure as it entered Earth's atmosphere. It could therefore break apart and burn up before reaching the ground.
When did CERNQ52 enter the Atmosphere?
The asteroid was predicted to enter the atmosphere at around 16:12 UTC on September 6. This was approximately 9:42 pm IST in India.
The exact timing could change slightly as new observations were added. Its predicted entry region was over the ocean. This significantly reduced the risk to people and infrastructure.
Is this an alarming situation?
For now, there is no reason to panic. CERNQ52 was far too small to trigger a large-scale asteroid disaster.
It was expected to burn up high in the atmosphere. But the incident raises an intriguing question. What if a larger asteroid approached Earth this quickly?
CERNQ52 is reportedly only the 13th known case of a small asteroid being detected before atmospheric impact. So, this was not an asteroid disaster. It was something more useful.

A Bright Spot at Mount Michael

Winter near the Antarctic Circle brings months of frozen darkness, when sea ice chokes ocean waters and many of its denizens hunker down to ride out the harsh conditions.
But as winter began to release its icy grip, an uncommonly clear satellite image revealed that part of this remote realm was still very much awake, at least volcanically speaking.
Mount Michael, the stratovolcano at the center of Saunders Island, rises above the ice-filled South Atlantic Ocean in this image, acquired with the OLI (Operational Land Imager) on the NASA-USGS Landsat 8 satellite on August 24, 2026.
The natural-color image is overlaid with an infrared signal (OLI bands 7-6-5), shown in red, revealing heat from the persistent lava lake in its summit crater.
A puff of a volcanic plume hovering over the peak, along with darkened snow on its northern slopes, also suggests ongoing activity.
Saunders Island is one of the South Sandwich Islands, a string of small volcanic peaks about 350 kilometers (220 miles) long that formed from the South American plate subducting beneath the tiny South Sandwich plate.
Regular eruptions, including at Mount Michael, have occurred on these islands in recent centuries.
Because of the volcanoes’ remoteness, scientists rely on satellite data to understand their activity.
An analysis of thermal anomalies in Landsat, Sentinel, and ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) observations spanning 30 years led researchers to conclude that Mount Michael hosts a persistent lava lake in its summit crater.
Only a handful of other volcanoes on Earth, including Kīlauea, Nyamulagira, and Erta Ale, are known to have similar, frequently active features.
Thermal observations from the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instruments have also enabled long-term monitoring of Mount Michael.
Data provided through MIROVA, a near-real-time volcanic hot spot detection system, indicate that low-intensity activity has been ongoing at the volcano for the past several years.
Other observations from NASA's Aura satellite show that emissions of sulfur dioxide and other gases are common at Mount Michael.
The cloud-free window over Mount Michael would close in short order. One week later, when Landsat 9 passed over the island, a more active atmosphere had returned. But the weather patterns interacted with the island to put on a spectacle of their own.
The 843-meter-high (2,766-foot-high) peak jutting from the ocean disturbed passing winds to produce a series of wave clouds resembling the wake of a ship, a familiar phenomenon in this region.
False-color imagery captured by NASA’s Aqua satellite indicates that a volcanic track caused by degassing sulfur dioxide was likely present as well.

Space America? Trump Claims Ownership Of The Moon For The USA In Bizarre Truth Social Posts

According to Trump, the Moon belongs to the US. According to the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, not so much.
In a slew of new posts to Trump-owned social media platform Truth Social, President Donald Trump has claimed ownership of the Moon for America, whilst also suggesting that the US state of New Mexico could be renamed New America.
Social media is fairly new, and we can only speculate how previous presidents of the USA would have used it. Except to say, of course, that Theodore Roosevelt would, with 100 percent certainty, have been constantly posting thirst traps.
Giant killer robots and… the Moon?
Well, we're now in a world in which the actual president of the actual USA cannot help but post artificially-generated images and videos on a daily basis, covering a wide variety of topics.
Over the last day or so, Trump has posted images of himself mocked up as Hulk Hogan draped in the stars and stripes, images of himself smashing up Iran with a large mallet, and an image of George Washington sat listening to Trump in the Oval Office.
Those are just some of the posts which don't involve him sitting on a throne surrounded by killer robots.
With that being his style, we probably shouldn't place too much emphasis on what Trump posts to social media.
But a few posts that have caused a little attention from the media, partly because of the recent renaming of the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, are a post suggesting New Mexico should be renamed New America and another claiming that the Moon belongs to the USA.
Who owns the Moon?
While the US is free to rename various landmarks, and the rest of the world is free to ignore that, there are international agreements that prevent the US (or any other nation) from claiming ownership of the Moon.
In 1967, 111 countries signed up to the Outer Space Treaty, the important bit of international law that governs what humanity can and cannot get up to beyond the confines of Earth.
That includes everything from who is responsible for space junk to, rather pleasingly, who actually owns Neil Armstrong’s substantial collection of Moon poops.
Crucially, the treaty explicitly states that “outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means”. In other words, no country can plant a flag on a bit of celestial real estate and declare it theirs.
This applies whether you're talking about the Moon, Mars, or, for someone with truly unreasonable ambitions and/or misconceptions about gas, Jupiter.
“The most important precept of the Outer Space Treaty is that space is for everyone, and everyone shall have freedom of exploration and access to all areas,” Michelle Hanlon, Air and Space Law Instructor at Research Counsel, told IFLScience.
“The other really important precept is that no state may claim territory in space. Nobody has that authority over the Moon.”
Could there be a Trump Towers: Lunar?
This becomes a little more complicated when you start talking about actually building things up there.
“If you’re building lunar research stations, the Outer Space Treaty has this concept that if it's for science it's OK, so long as you share all your information with everybody,” Hanlon explained.
“But what about building a hotel on the Moon? There's nobody who has the authority to say, yes, you can build that hotel."
In short, the international treaty is unambiguous, and the US is signed up to it. That sounds reassuring, but the President has not exactly been shy about withdrawing from international agreements.
"In reality, the only international law that exists is that which is imposed by the hegemon (or hegemons), who can break it at will," Space Industry Analyst Peter Hague explained on Substack, calling the space treaty "essentially a fig leaf" at this point.
"No major signatory to the Outer Space Treaty considers its most restrictive aspects, on matters such as territorial claims and military activities, as things they are committed not to do," he added.
The treaty is not some magical document which prevents wrongdoing in space by virtue of existing, but a commitment to enforce the rules through pressure here on Earth.
We don't yet know how the world would respond should anyone try to claim ownership of the Moon. With the main barriers still being getting to the Moon and remaining there for significant periods of time, don't expect our natural satellite to become Space America anytime soon.

Ukraine lost around $1.2 billion to fraud, waste and mismanagement in military procurement in 2024 alone, the New York Times has reported, citing confidential government audits and court records.
Seven of the country’s ten largest military contractors continued to receive new orders despite fraud investigations, previous failures to deliver, or the arrest of executives on corruption charges, the paper wrote on Sunday, describing the pattern as a “persistent phenomenon.”
Auditors also identified 18 companies awarded contracts despite earlier defaults, six of which had failed to fulfill a single deal.
Defense industry fraud is “a longstanding tradition” in Ukraine, American anti-corruption expert James Wasserstrom has told the NYT. “Anything that isn’t nailed down in Ukraine will be stolen,” he said.
Among the cases highlighted by the Times was the state-owned Pavlohrad Chemical Plant, which supplied the military with 233,000 unusable mortar rounds.
Nevertheless, the company later received more business, including a contract to supply nearly all of Ukraine’s 122mm artillery rounds in 2025.
The audits also found that cheaper offers were sometimes bypassed. In one tender, Kiev reportedly bought Turkish-made munitions for multiple-launch rocket systems through a Czech intermediary for around $5,100 each despite the manufacturer offering them directly for roughly $4,200.
The losses accumulated as Vladimir Zelensky repeatedly appealed to Western governments for more weapons, warning of critical shortages on the battlefield. In April 2024, he said Kiev was in “dire need” of increased support and pressed its backers to deliver promised arms and ammunition.
The report comes amid a series of high-profile graft investigations involving top Ukrainian officials and figures close to Zelensky.
In August, the Ukrainian leader sacked the deputy head of his office, Irina Mudraya, while other recent corruption probes have implicated former ministers, diplomats and senior officials.
Former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov, meanwhile, accused the government of “systemic corruption” following his dismissal in July.
Fedorov, who had sought to overhaul military procurement, has claimed that entrenched defense-industry interests resisted his reforms and has since called for wartime elections.
Zelensky’s five-year presidential term expired in May 2024, but he has refused to hold a new election, citing martial law imposed after the conflict with Russia escalated in February 2022. Moscow has long argued that the scandals are evidence of systemic corruption in Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said earlier this year that corruption “permeates the entire Ukrainian power structure, including Zelensky’s inner circle and Zelensky himself.”

Iran To Draw New "Restricted Zone" In Hormuz As Saudi Aramco Facility Hit Again, Oil Climbs
At a moment US officials have been boasting of more and more oil tankers making it through the Strait of Hormuz under US naval protection and support, Iran has previewed a new 'restricted zone' in the Gulf, which it says will be announced in the coming days.
The announcement is expected to include maps of the new shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, likely to begin from where the US blockade of Iran starts and extending into areas of the Gulf, according to Iran's Supreme National Security Council on Sunday.
"The maps of a new international corridor which lies in Iranian and Omani waters and in which Iran will have management have been agreed and should be signed in the coming days," national security council official Mohsen Rezaei said.
"We will only commit to the Strait of Hormuz being open when they (the Americans) stop the sabotage, threats and attacks on Iran," he added. Per a Monday Bloomberg note:

"Notably, activity from the People's Bank of China (PBoC) has picked up pace in recent months, with double-digit monthly purchases of gold since May 2026," the report said. Poland purchased eight tonnes and was the second-largest buyer.
Russia was the top net seller, with six tonnes sold. This was followed by Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Jordan, all of which sold a tonne each.
Year-to-date, global central banks reported purchasing 130 tonnes of gold, down from roughly 160 tonnes during the same period in 2025. Poland has added 90 tonnes this year, with China buying 60 tonnes. Turkey has sold 85 tonnes, while Russia's sales total 50 tonnes.
Central banks account for roughly 20 percent of all historically mined gold, according to the WGC. Bullion serves as a vital bank reserve asset, valued for its liquidity, safety, and potential returns. In times of uncertainty, gold demand tends to rise.
According to a June 16 WGC report, a survey of central banks found that 89 percent of respondents forecast global central bank gold reserves to rise over the year.
As for funding, half of the respondents said they would procure the gold locally by using domestic currencies. Thirty-eight percent said they would sell other reserve assets to purchase gold.
"The majority of respondents (74 percent) see moderate or significantly lower US dollar holdings within global reserves over the next five years," the report said.
"Respondents also believe that the share of other currencies, such as the euro and renminbi, will remain unchanged over the same period, while gold holdings will increase."
Goldman Sachs predicts central bank buying will support the rise in gold prices, according to an Aug. 28 report. Such purchases are being driven by a need to diversify their reserves.

Ukrainian drone blitz hits 3 Russian oil refineries, Zelensky confirms

Ukrainian long-range drones targeted three oil refineries across Russia, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sept. 7.
"Our soldiers continue to respond fairly to Russian strikes on Ukraine. An oil refinery was hit in the Ryazan region. Our long-range force was used against oil refineries in the Perm region and Tatarstan," Zelensky said in a post on social media.
Ukrainian drones also struck a launch and storage site for strike drones in Russia's Kursk Oblast and "a target" in the Black Sea, he added without providing further details, though he did attach a video of highlights.
Zelensky's statement came as Telegram reports, some of which included geolocated details, said that Ukrainian drones struck the LUKOIL-Permnefteorgsintez refinery, one of Russia's largest oil refineries in Perm, located more than 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) from Ukraine.
Videos shared by the Ukrainian Telegram channel Exilenova+ purportedly show Ukrainian long-range drones flying over Perm and smoke rising from the oil refinery amid explosions.
Independent Russian outlet Astra had earlier said on Sept. 6 that Ryazan Oil Refinery Plant, part of Russia's state-controlled oil giant Rosneft, was struck again, following attacks in May and July.
With a capacity to process about 17 million tons of oil per year, it produces a wide range of oil products, including automobile gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation kerosene, fuel oil, and liquefied gases. The facility is located about 500 kilometers (310 miles) from Ukraine.
Elsewhere in Russia, NASA's FIRMS detected a thermal anomaly at the Taganrog-Central military airfield in Taganrog, near Rostov-on-Don in Rostov Oblast, Militarnyi reported.
FIRMS uses satellite instruments to detect thermal anomalies and active fires on Earth's surface. Exilenova+ reported that local residents had reported an attack on Taganrog earlier on Sept. 7.
The Kyiv Independent cannot verify the claims or the extent of the damage caused. Ukraine's military has not yet commented on the reported attacks.
Without acknowledging any of the reported attacks, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed on Sept. 7 that it downed or intercepted 306 Ukrainian drones overnight, including over Perm Krai, Rostov Oblast, and Kursk Oblast. It didn't mention Ryazan Oblast in its report.
The new reported strikesagainst Perm's oil refinery are the latest in a series of attacks that temporarily suspended operations at the site in August. The facility processes more than 13 million metric tons of crude oil annually and produces gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, and lubricating oils.
Ukrainian forces had previously struck the Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez oil refinery on July 29 as part of Ukraine's broader missile and drone campaign against Russian energy and oil infrastructure far from Ukraine.
On Sept. 5, a pro-Ukraine partisan force, Atesh, announced that it had recruited a defector from the Russian military who then destroyed a communications tower near Perm, hindering coordination between security forces in the area.
The sabotage reportedly cleared the way for Ukrainian drones to again strike the refinery on Aug. 21.
In Taganrog, Ukrainian forces previously struck a Russian defense industry facility on April 19.
The targeted site was the Atlant-Aero plant, which develops and manufactures strike and reconnaissance drones for the Russian military. A fire broke out at the facility following the strike.

REPORT: Senator’s Senior Staffer Works Second Job As Lobbyist, Raising Ethics Questions
A senior adviser to Republican South Dakota Sen. Mike Rounds, Robert Skjonsberg, has simultaneously worked as a state lobbyist for several high-profile clients, according to a report.
The veteran staffer has been registered to lobby the South Dakota Legislature for more than a dozen clients over the past decade. His clients have included Meta, tobacco giant Altria, conservative think tank the Freedom Foundation, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, the South Dakota Dairy Producers, South Dakota Pork Producers and other trade groups, according to state records reviewed by Politico.
Skjonsberg is also listed as a “co-owner” of 605 Strategies, according to its website, which says he helped guide Rounds to victory in the 2002 gubernatorial race, his 2006 reelection campaign and his successful Senate campaigns in 2014 and 2020.
In 2014, The Nation reported that records allegedly showed Rounds’ gubernatorial administration had extended taxpayer assistance to companies in which he and Skjonsberg were investors.
Since Skjonsberg registered to represent Meta last year, Rounds has introduced several bills related to artificial intelligence, a technology in which the social media giant has been investing heavily.
As a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rounds has worked on legislation affecting industries represented by Skjonsberg. This year, the senator introduced bills that would expand grazing land for cattle producers and restrict foreign adversaries from purchasing U.S. agricultural land and businesses, Politico reported.
Senate ethics rules prohibit certain staffers from “affiliat[ing] with a firm, partnership, association, corporation, or other entity for the purpose of providing professional services for compensation.” The rules also restrict Senate employees from allowing outside firms to use their names in connection with compensated professional services, according to Politico.
However, a spokesperson for Rounds told Politico that the office’s general counsel “consulted with the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Ethics, which provided guidance to make certain there was and is no conflict of interest,” adding that “Senate Ethics guidance continues to be followed today.”
The Association of Equipment Manufacturers and Meta both told Politico they had not worked with Skjonsberg since March, when the state legislature concluded its 2026 session.

Trump lifts sanctions on top Al Qaeda recruiters, financiers days before 9/11 anniversary
As the US prepares to mark 25 years since Sept. 11, 2001, Donald Trump has removed top Al Qaeda figures from the US list of designated terrorists. Among those he delisted was Abdullah Muhaysini, a Saudi cleric who recruited child fighters and teen suicide bombers to wreak havoc across Syria.
The administration of President Donald Trump has removed the names of some of the world’s most notorious commanders, recruiters and financiers for the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda from its list of specially designated terrorists. Among those relieved of US sanctions this August was Abdullah Muhaysini, a Salafi-jihadi cleric from Saudi Arabia who participated in videotaped massacres of captive soldiers and recruited droves of foreign youth to carry out suicide bombings throughout Syria over the past decade.
The delisting of the jihadist recruiters came as part of the Trump administration’s removal of the government of Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa as a State Sponsor of Terrorists. “These actions represent another historic step by President Trump to give the Syrian people a path to prosperity,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared on August 24, 2026.
Formerly known as Abu Mohammad Al-Jolani, Al-Sharaa is the co-founder of ISIS and founder of Jabhat Al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda. Under the guidance of Western advisors, Al-Sharaa rebranded Al-Nusra as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, before he toppled the government of President Bashar Al-Assad in December 2024.
By the time he seized power, Al-Sharaa had been groomed by his NATO handlers as a reliable local enforcer. When Trump hosted Al-Sharaa in the Oval Office in November 2025, playfully misting him with Trump Cologne and asking how many wives he had, it was clear the US was ready to lift the sanctions that had devastated Syria’s economy. Two months later, Trump pitched a half-baked plan for the Syrian military to attack Iran. Washington had finally found its man in Damascus.

This August, the Trump administration went a step further, lifting sanctions on Al Qaeda propagandists, funders and fighters responsible for gruesome atrocities during the dirty war on Syria. These figures include Abu Sulayman al-Muhajir, a top Al Qaeda recruiter in Australia who fled to Syria; Shafi Sultan Mohammed al-Ajmi, a major Kuwaiti financier of Al-Nusra; and Abdul Samrez Jashari, an Albanian foreign fighter who has taken on a senior role in Syria’s military under Al-Sharaa.
Perhaps none of the Al Qaeda bandits who received sanctions relief from the Trump administration oversaw as many acts of sadistic violence as the Saudi-born, Turkish-backed cleric Abdullah Muhaysini.
