Supreme Court: The Great Sanhedrin of 71 Members

The Jewish supreme court was called the Sanhedrin (“Council”) or Sanhedrin ha-Gadol (“the Great Council”) and consisted of 71 rabbis.

Why 71? G‑d told Moses, “Gather for Me 70 men from the elders of Israel.” Moses presided over them, as the verse continues, “And they shall stand there with you.”1 Thus, the 70 judges plus Moses equals 71.

Once Moses passed away, the judge with the greatest knowledge was appointed in his stead. Called the nasi, he would sit at the head of the court. To his right sat the av bet din (patron of the court), the second greatest judge, who was appointed as the nasi’s assistant. The remaining 69 would sit before them, arranged according to age and stature. The wiser the judge, the closer he would be seated to the nasi.2

The Sanhedrin was always located close to the Tabernacle or the Temple. In Moses’ time it was near the entrance to the Tabernacle; in later times it was seated in a special chamber in the Temple compound. Toward the end of the Second Temple era, it convened in other locations in the Holy Land and continued to function in an ever-decreasing capacity until approximately the 5th century.

The Sanhedrin’s Function

Any laws and takanot (decrees) issued by the Sanhedrin were binding on the entire Jewish nation. Although lower courts consisting of 23 judges could try capital cases, only the Sanhedrin had authority over cases involving the king, capital crimes committed by the high priest, or crimes committed by an entire tribe or city.

Powers exclusive to the high court also included:3

Crowning a king.

Authorizing “voluntary” wars (milchemet hareshut), such as wars for the sake of expanding the country’s borders.

Expanding holy sites, such as Jerusalem and the courtyard of the Holy Temple.

Appointing lesser courts of 23 judges.

Additionally, since the Sanhedrin was required to hear all testimony directly, rather than through an interpreter, it was preferable that its members be familiar with every language spoken by Jews around the world. When a foreign language was used in testimony, the Sanhedrin had to have at least two members who spoke that language to examine the witnesses, and a third member who at least understood the language.4

Unlike modern-day supreme courts, the Sanhedrin was not an “appeals court” in the sense that a litigant could appeal a verdict. However, if a lower court was unsure of how to rule, it could refer the case to a higher court.

U.S. Forces Destroy One Iranian Tanker and Damage Two More

Published Sep 5, 2026 11:43 AM by The Maritime Executive

On Saturday, U.S. Central Command reported that Iranian forces attempted to hit a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier with ballistic missiles, prompting a severe American counterstrike that disabled two Iranian tankers and destroyed a third.

In a statement, CENTCOM said that a U.S. aircraft carrier and a destroyer "successfully evaded multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks," and that all crewmembers were unharmed. In response, U.S. forces launched a counterstrike that "completely destroyed" a sanctioned shadow fleet tanker with IMO number 9189146 (operating as Kylo or Noxen) in the Gulf of Oman.

Video released by CENTCOM showed multiple hits on the tanker's weather deck, followed by two heavy strikes that blew through the port side shell plating and out the starboard side, consistent with an antiship cruise missile attack.

The ship was in ballast at the time, reducing the consequences of a spill. Prior to the attack, the tanker's crewmembers were instructed to abandon ship. CENTCOM did not provide an update on their status post-strike.

Two additional Iran-linked tankers - Downy and Stark 1 - each received a single small missile strike at the transom, intended to disable but not destroy the vessels. CENTCOM emphasized that Iran has no way to intercept American attacks on its ships.

“Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost —taking out three of yours,” said Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM's commander, in a statement Saturday. “We will not hesitate to defend American forces, and if necessary, destroy Iran’s limited and exposed oil fleet.”

Trump DOJ subpoenas Nevada’s Democrat election chief for voter records

The Trump Justice Department has issued multiple subpoenas to Nevada’s Democrat election chief seeking voter information as it cracks down on states that have allowed noncitizens to register to vote or have had problems cleaning voter rolls.

Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar confirmed his office received “seven voter-related DOJ subpoenas from the FBI over the last three months.”

His announcement came just days after his office confirmed the state removed a large number of voters from its roll ahead of the November elections.

Aguilar said the state removed a net of 50,130 registered voters in August, about a 2.4 percent decline.

“The decrease in active registered voters is largely due to list maintenance activities and often occurs ahead of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) 90-day quiet period before an election, which prohibits routine list maintenance activities until the election is over,” he said.

Aguilar is among the secretaries of state who have opposed President Donald Trump’s election integrity moves, including an executive order restricting absentee ballots.

He portrayed the subpoenas as part of Trump’s efforts to pressure states.

“The federal administration is inundating election offices with investigations and questions ahead of the election, and making sweeping claims of election fraud to the public before any investigation is done,” he said. “We will continue standing up for Nevada voters and remain focused on running a safe, secure and transparent election this fall.”

MO Concludes Next Round of Net-Zero Discussions Still Divided

The International Maritime Organization completed its next working group session discussing efforts to reach a decarbonization approach still largely divided, and is now aiming for a potential resolution by the end of 2026. Optimists are noticing a productive discussion and less political maneuvering and backstabbing, but the United States and others continued their opposition to the Net Zero Framework, and key issues were deferred to more intersessional discussions or a consequential series of three sessions in late November and early December 2026.

The session came against a backdrop where climate scientists assert that the evidence of the consequences of greenhouse gas emissions is building. Europe and many other parts of the world suffered through a blistering summer of heatwaves, and Nepal is still reeling from what appears to have been a major glacier collapse leading to catastrophic flooding. The United Nations released scientific reports saying the globe would exceed the previously ascribed goal to limit the increase to 1.5 Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) above mid-19th century temperatures, and likely more harsh consequences.

The United States, Saudi Arabia, and primarily other oil-producing states, continued their opposition in the IMO discussions that emerged and led to the deferral of adoption votes. They continue to push to scrap key elements of the Net Zero Framework or call for additions such as different fuels and more pathways. The proposed GCG Fund remains one element of strong opposition even with proposed changes and a renaming.

Other states put forward yet different approaches, such as Liberia, which wants to tie in the availability and affordability of cleaner fuels to the structure. Japan proposed replacing the pricing structure with shipowner-directed contributions, but according to observers in the closed-door sessions, that was “robustly rejected.”

Smaller and island nations continue to push for stricter requirements while many of the individual issues remained open to discussion. Researchers at UCL Energy Institute noted likely efforts to soften the initial Global Fuel Intensity pathway in the NZF as well as broad debate on issues such as pooling and transfer of credits. China put forward a proposal that includes reward payments and could form a single transaction, which was reported to receive broad support.

Observers are saying that it appears at least two-thirds of the states are supporting the approach of a centralized pricing and collection system that also rewards early adopters. At the end of the four days of meetings, it seemed that despite the continued block of opposition, overall, there is no significant support for an alternative to adopting the Net-Zero Framework.

“Whilst there are many positives to take away,” Dr. Tristan Smith, Professor of Energy and Transport at UCL Shipping and Oceans Research Group, said, “there remains high uncertainty in the extent that both industry’s transition and low-income countries' transitions will be supported. There remains high risk that in the effort to find a creative way forwards, the equilibrium between these two aspects, that enabled the NZF in the first place, is lost to the detriment of the outcome overall.”

Summarizing where things stand, UCL concludes that “several key aspects of the negotiation are wide-open and didn’t narrow this week.” It sees as a core question the level of the early transition, how soft it is, and the regulatory tools and support for businesses to manage the changes. It expects the draft documents will evolve more informally and warns, “There could well be twists to come as different concepts are merged together to find common ground.”

The official IMO timeline calls for the intersessional working group to reconvene November 23 for a week of discussions. The following week, MEPC 85 runs from November 30 to December 4, and the extraordinary sessions adjourned in October 2025 resumes on Dember 4, assuming MEPC 85 produces conclusions.

Disruption at Port of Dover due to 'stop the boats' protest

There has been major disruption at the Port of Dover due to a large group of masked men holding a demonstration.

Hundreds of protesters, dressed in black and wearing face coverings, blocked roads and were heard chanting "stop the boats".

Traffic was stopped from going in and out of the port, with the government saying it condemned "the behaviour in Dover and the travel disruption it has caused".

Kent Police, which made no arrests, described it as a "spontaneous" protest, while Mike Tapp MP said questions need to be asked around why it appeared the police "didn't know about it".

Officers moved the crowd from the port to Dover Priory railway station at about 11:30 BST and said "all involved had dispersed by 12:00".

Paul King, Reform UK councillor for Dover West, said he had been told it was a "stop the boats protest".

Kent Police has not yet commented on who was behind the demo.

Anti-hate organisation Hope Not Hate claims that the Patriot Platform network arranged the protest, saying the group began meeting in July and has brought together members of anti-migrant groups from around the country.

Demonstrators told the BBC they did not want to talk to the media, although one said "send them back" and another said "stop the boats" when approached.

Far-right activists Tommy Robinson and Danny Thomas both posted about it on X, praising those involved.

Thomas wrote: "The experience on the ground today, was the overwhelming majority of the women and local people we spoke to were thankful that people were actually doing something."

Dover and Deal MP Mike Tapp said the incident, which started at about 07:00, caused "absolutely awful disruption" for residents.

"I am fed up with idiots coming to Dover," he said on Facebook.

"I bet if you asked any one of those 'protesters' they wouldn't know small boat crossing are down by 40% and we are working hard to fix the mess.

"I will be looking urgently on Monday to ask questions around why we didn't know about this," he added.

"In this instance, it would appear that the police didn't know about it, and the resources were pretty thin on the ground, to be quite honest from what I saw."

Responding on X, Thomas said Tapp "might want to take a look at what your own constituents are saying. The comments from people in and around Dover speak for themselves."

Labour leader of Dover District Council Kevin Mills told BBC Radio 4 low policing levels contributed to the disruption protestors caused.

He said that the police presence improved over the day, though it was initially "pretty low".

The Port of Dover said operations had returned to normal and routes in and out of the town had all reopened.

Rafael Pittman, a tour guide from London, said the area had been "absolute chaos" in the three hours that he was there, waiting to pick up a group of tourists who had docked at Dover.

He said: "Passengers didn't disembark and we couldn't enter the terminal as it was blocked by freight trucks.

"The hooded protesters arrived en masse, passed the trucks and headed towards the cruise terminal, followed by the police."

Pittman added that, while the protesters "looked quite frightening", they were "friendly-ish" and told him that they were protesting against illegal migration.
