Ukraineâs Vladimir Zelensky is facing his gravest political challenge in years, major US and European media outlets have reported, as a new corruption scandalengulfs his office and a former official openly challenges his leadership.
Zelensky fired deputy head of his office, Irina Mudraya, on Wednesday after Western-backed anti-graft authorities launched an investigation into an alleged $3.4 million money-laundering scheme involving senior presidential officials. Mudraya has denied wrongdoing. It is the latest of many corruption scandals involving officials close to Zelensky.
A day earlier, former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov, whose surprise dismissal last month sparked weeks of public protests, released a campaign-style video denouncing government corruption and calling for elections amid what he described as âa systemic crisis of governance.â
Zelenskyâs five-year presidential term expired in May 2024, but he has refused to hold a new election, citing martial law imposed after the conflict with Russia escalated in February 2022.
The Wall Street Journal called the turmoil the âbiggest challengeâ to Zelenskyâs âhold on the presidencyâ since 2022, saying Fedorov appeared to be positioning himself as a leading challenger amid growing frustration over recurring corruption scandals.
The Financial Times noted that the growing list of Zelensky allies caught up in corruption investigations have contributed to his falling approval ratings and raised concern among Kievâs Western backers, citing an analyst who concluded that âthe political crisis is obvious.â
The Washington Post described Fedorovâs intervention as a âremarkably direct challengeâ to Zelenskyâs authority.
The Telegraph said Zelensky had been âbruised by a series of lingering corruption scandalsâ as investigations âkeep coming.â It argued that he was accumulating powerful rivals who were once deeply loyal to him and said it appeared âincreasingly possibleâ that he may not lead Ukraine into peacetime.
The Guardian described Fedorov as a âpotent political opponent.â Experts cited by the newspaper called corruption a âsymptomâ of deeper problems with âbad governance,â warning that public exhaustion and Zelenskyâs failure to explain his decisions had created a âperfect powder box.â
Le Monde said Fedorov had âcrossed a lineâ no major Ukrainian politician had dared to cross since 2022 by calling for elections. The newspaper said he was seeking to capitalize on an âaccumulationâ of crises, including repeated corruption scandals.
Der Spiegel cited a Ukrainian political analyst who described Fedorovâs challenge as an âapplication for the role of opposition leader.â The magazine said Zelensky now faced his first âpublic and direct opponentâ since the conflict escalated.

Croatian police have arrested a Ukrainian man suspected by Germany of taking part in the Nord Stream pipeline attack â while he was on set filming a Hollywood thriller based on the 2022 sabotage operation
The German Federal Prosecutorâs Office said on Wednesday that Ukrainian national Vladimir Z., previously identified by media as Vladimir Zhuravlyov, had been apprehended in the Croatian city of Pula under a European arrest warrant.
In a bizarre twist to the already labyrinthine Nord Stream story, Zhuravlyov was arrested while on the set of âSnake Islandâ, a movie about the supposed Ukrainian plot to destroy the pipelines, German legal magazine LTO reported.
Starring Sean Penn and Adrien Brody, and directed by Doug Liman of âThe Bourne Identityâ, âSnake Islandâ began filming in Zagreb earlier this month, according to a report by World of Reel. It is unclear whether Zhuravlyov was on set as an actor, an adviser, or a guest of Penn and Brody.
Although âSnake Islandâ will reportedly focus on the Nord Stream operation, its name is a reference to a Ukrainian island in the mouth of the Danube estuary, which was captured by Russian forces in early 2022.
In true Hollywood fashion, Ukrainian and Western media claimed that Ukrainian soldiers on the island refused to surrender to the Russian Navy, radioing âRussian warship, go f*ck yourselfâ to the Moskva guided missile cruiser.
In reality, the garrison on the island immediately surrendered. Ukrainian forces tried and failed to recapture the island several times throughout 2022, before Russian forces departed in June.
Zhuravlyov has evaded German authorities twice already. While living in Poland in 2024, he fled to Ukraine before he could be apprehended, reportedly in a vehicle belonging to the Ukrainian military attachĂŠ. Zhuravlyov then returned to Poland and was detained there in September 2025, but a Warsaw court rejected Berlinâs extradition request, arguing that âblowing up critical infrastructure during a war⌠is not sabotage but denotes a military action.â
According to the warrant, Zhuravlyov, a trained diver, is accused of planting explosives as part of a group, committing sabotage, and destroying infrastructure. He is expected to be extradited to Germany.
German investigators maintain that the attack was carried out by a small group of Ukrainians who used forged documents to rent a sailing yacht and transport military-grade explosives from Rostock, Germany to waters near the Danish island of Bornholm. The group allegedly used commercial diving equipment to plant the charges on the pipelines at a depth of around 100 meters.
German authorities say the alleged team was led by Sergey K., identified by media as former Ukrainian special forces member Sergey Kuznetsov. He was arrested in Italy in August 2025, extradited to Germany three months later, and charged with âwar crimesâ for knowingly attacking civilian infrastructure. His trial is due to begin this fall.
Moscow has dismissed the âUkrainian frogmenâ theory as fantasy, arguing that such a complex operation could not have been carried out in NATO-controlled waters by a small group without state assistance or Western intelligence involvement.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has backed a version of events put forward by American journalist Seymour Hersh, who claimed â citing intelligence sources â that the CIA and Norwegian Navy, acting on direct orders from then-US President Joe Biden, used NATO military exercises in the Baltic Sea in June 2022 as cover to plant remotely-triggered explosive devices on the Nord Stream lines.

WASHINGTON, Aug 20 (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department has requested to interview FBI officials who were involved in the 2022 search of Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in âFloridaas part of a wide-ranging probe examining past investigations of the president, four sources âfamiliar with the matter said on Thursday.
The requests came from investigators working with JoediGenova, a Trump ally who began overseeing âthe Florida-based investigation earlier this year. The investigation has been seeking toestablish that Trump was the victim of a criminal conspiracy against his rights.
The questioning over the Mar-a-Lago search, which was first reported by the Associated Press,is an indication the probe is examining a range of prior government investigations into Trump's âconduct.
Spokespeople for the Justice Department and â FBI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The investigation so far had appeared to focus mostly on a 2017 U.S. intelligence assessment that concluded Russia sought â to boost Trump's presidential campaign in 2016.Investigators have interviewed current and former intelligence employees over the last several months.
Several former career FBI officials who were involved in the search for classifieddocuments at Mar-a-Lago have âbeen approached âfor voluntary interviews in recent weeks, two of the âsources said. The other two confirmed there âhad been outreach to FBI officials who were involved in the search. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.
It is not clear what charges prosecutors may be exploring. The Justice Department in Trump's second term has investigated and in some cases prosecuted several Trump critics and others who resisted his agenda or led investigations into him.
The FBI search turned up more than 100 âclassified documents stashed at Mar-a-Lago, including highly sensitive national security ârecords. The search led to criminal charges against Trump and âtwo associates who were accused of illegally âretaining classified documents and obstructing government efforts to retrieve the material.
Trump has for years ârailed against the search of his resort, âand his lawyers,led by ânow-Attorney General Todd Blanche, asked a judge to exclude evidence from it, arguing the search warrant was unlawful.
Prosecutors maintained they had sufficient justification, including evidence Trump thwarted previous attempts to recover âthe records.
A judge dismissed the âcase after concluding the lead prosecutor, Jack Smith, had been unlawfully appointed to the role. âThe DOJ dropped its appeal of that decision after Trump won the 2024 election.

Lisa Murkowski Calls For Prosecution of O'Keefe
I asked the poll worker, âWould it be possible to vote without it [ID]?â They confirmed, âAbsolutely possible.â
âYou can vote if youâd like to.â The poll workers reassured me that I would still be able to vote without having to show ID.
Poll workers stated, âWeâre trying to figure this [voting system] out.â
On Election Day in Anchorage, Alaska, James OâKeefe entered a polling location and gave election workers the name Brian Murkowski, Sen. Lisa Murkowskiâs brother. James OâKeefe repeatedly told them he did not have identification and asked whether Brian could still vote.
After finding Brian Murkowskiâs name on the voter rolls, election workers told James OâKeefe he could vote without presenting ID and offered him a question ballot, telling him it was âAbsolutely possibleâ to vote without ID and later, âYou can vote if youâd like to.â
Under Title 15 of the Alaska Statutes, a question ballot can be issued when a voter cannot provide sufficient identification. The voter fills out the ballot in the same manner as other voters, but the ballot is placed in an envelope and subject to further review. When the ballot box is opened, the envelope is segregated, counted, compared with the voting list, and delivered to the election officials responsible for reviewing the ballot.
OâKeefe did not check in as Brian Murkowski, cast a ballot, or sign his name. OMG documented what happened when OâKeefe gave Brian Murkowskiâs name, said he had no ID, and asked whether Brian could still vote.
At another Anchorage polling location, a member of the OMG team used the name Karina Waller, Sen. Murkowskiâs state director, and said she did not have identification. The worker confirmed they were at the correct polling place and offered the question ballot option after the person said they did not have ID.
Sen. Murkowski remains opposed to the SAVE Act, citing concerns that its voter documentation requirements could disenfranchise or alienate voters in rural parts of Alaska and create logistical challenges for some voters.
OMG went to Alaska to expose what happens when someone shows up at the polls without identification and gives the name of someone already on the voter rolls.
OMG has reached out for comment to Brian Murkowski, Lisa Murkowski, and Karina Waller.

So let's take a close look at just how much worse, and then maybe we'll do a couple shots of tequila together. We'll start with Cicero's GAO chart so you can visualize how the improper payments problem has done nothing but grow over the years â particularly during the 2020-2021 COVID madness.
"Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent estimated that up to 10 percent of the federal budget is lost to fraud," Cicero reported, "citing a GAO analysis of 2018â2022 data that put annual losses between $233 billion and $521 billion."
My first question was whether the dollar figures were adjusted for inflation, and the answer was no.
Adjusting for inflation, Washington misspent or unaccountably spent a grand total of $3.325 TRILLION, not $2.7 TRILLION â almost a quarter more.
But why stop in 2023 like Cicero did, when we have figures extending through 2025? And more inflation, too. So just to keep things current â and you chewing down those Lopressor tablets â the 2003â2026 inflation-adjusted total is about $3.9 TRILLION.
The entire federal budget, still using constant dollars, didn't exceed $3.9 TRILLION until 2017.
As I said earlier, the numbers are incomprehensible.

The civilian-contracted aircraft was traveling from Anchorage to Cape Newenham, according to reports
A charter plane has crashed at a remote site in western Alaska, killing all eight people onboard, according to reports.
The aircraft went down on Thursday, Aug. 20, at Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport, which is around 450 miles west of Anchorage, according to the Associated Press (AP).
Two pilots and six passengers were onboard the plane, Clint Johnson, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)âs Alaskan chief, told the outlet.
Johnson said the plane had taken off from Anchorage and was believed to have crashed while traveling to Cape Newenham.
âThis is a devastating loss for our military family and the communities we serve,â U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert Davis said in a statement, per NBC News.
âThese individuals were dedicated professionals carrying out a vital mission in a demanding environment,â said Davis, who is Commander of the Alaskan Command, Eleventh Air Force and the Alaskan North American Aerospace Defense Command Region.
âOur absolute priority right now is providing unwavering support to their families, friends, and teammates during this devastating time,â he added.
The statement said the plane was a âcivilian-contracted aircraft.â It is unclear what work the team was carrying out.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it chartered the plane and that two of its employees were among those killed in the crash, according to KTUU-TV. The agency added that their families have been informed of their deaths.
The aircraft is believed to be a twin-engine Cessna, per the outlet.
Alaskan Sen. Lisa Murkowski posted about the crash on X, and said the state was âpraying for those on board, their loved ones, and the team at Security Aviation.â
âI join Alaskans in condolences as we learn of the plane crash in Cape Newenham today,â she said. âIâve traveled extensively with Security Aviation throughout Alaska, and have met many of their experienced pilots. I appreciate the U.S. Coast Guard, NTSB, Alaska State Troopers, and the Rescue Coordination Center for responding to the site.â
Alaskan Rep. Nick Begich said in a Facebook statement: âThis is incredibly difficult news for many Alaskans, especially those in our close-knit aviation community. Dharna and I join Alaskans across our state in praying for everyone affected and the entire Security Aviation family.â
The U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the NTSB did not immediately respond to PEOPLEâs request for further information.

Longtime Seattle Times sports columnist Matt Calkins announced his decision to resign from the paper after 11 years Thursday. Calkinsaccused the newspaper of spiking several columns of his, including one about Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham.
Calkins announced the news on X and his Substack.
âAfter 11 years as a sports columnist at the Seattle Times, I have decided to resign. It was entirely my choice, and it was not an easy one. The impetus was the Times declining to run a column I wrote from the perspective of two female student athletes who were opposed to competing against biological males,â he wrote.
âIt was one of several pieces of mine that had been spiked, and I no longer felt like I could properly do my job as a columnist. I lay out the situation in greater detail in the link below, but I want to say that I enjoyed my time with the paper, find the talent there to be immense, and have no animosity toward anyone who works there. It was just time for a change.â
Calkins also offered more detail about the other columns the newspaper declined to publish:
One was a piece questioning whether players for the U.S. Womenâs Soccer Team were really the victims of discrimination in their equal-pay lawsuit. Another was a more general column on cancel culture in sports. The last, written shortly after George Floydâs death, implored people to listen to state-champion basketball coach Mike Bethea â a black man urging the public not to stereotype cops. The common theme? All of these challenged prevailing newsroom narratives and likely would have triggered the outrage mob.
Calkins also insisted he does not wan to be âmuzzled.â As he put it on his Substack, âTo be honest, Iâm scared shitless right now. I have no idea how the next few months or years are going to play out.But that fear beats the indignity of being muzzled.â

On Tuesday, Dr. David Morens, a former senior adviser to Dr. Anthony Fauci at NIAID, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States by concealing federal records related to SARS-CoV-2âs origins.
He admitted to plotting to conceal federal records related to research on the covid virusâ origins by using his personal Gmail account to evade Freedom of Information Act requests. According to the guilty plea, he conspired with others, including Peter Daszak of the EcoHealth Alliance, to hide communications regarding controversial grant funding.

Dr. David Morens, the longtime senior adviser to Dr. Anthony Fauci at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (âNIAIDâ), pleaded guilty on Tuesday, 18 August, in Greenbelt federal court to conspiracy to commit offenses and defraud the United States.
The plea, entered under 18 U.S.C. § 371, caps a records scandal that began with emails in which Morens boasted about making federal documents disappear. According to the Department of Justice (âDOJâ), Morens faces up to five years in federal prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.
US District Judge Paula Xinis is overseeing the case, with sentencing scheduled for 12 November. His attorney, Tim Belevetz, said in a statement: âBy pleading guilty today, Dr. Morens has taken responsibility for what he did and will continue to do so.â The plea agreement dropped four other charges from a five-count April indictment, including destruction of records and aiding and abetting, which each carried up to 20 years.

Peter Panum sailed to the Faroe Islands in 1846 to investigate an epidemic that infected some six thousand of the islandsâ seven thousand eight hundred residents. The exceptions were the elderly who had survived the epidemic of 1781. Not one of them was reinfected sixty-five years later (Panum 1847).
Influenza changes its surface proteins continuously, which is why last yearâs antibodies stop fitting this yearâs virus. Measles does not do this. It carries a single serotype and does not drift, so an antibody response raised against the wild virus of 1781 still fitted the virus of 1846 exactly. The durability question for measles is a question about the human immune system alone, uncomplicated by any change in the target.
Vaccine-induced immunity behaves differently from what Panum found among the Faroese. Bianchi and colleagues tested 611 Italian students and hospital residents. Twenty percent of the twice vaccinated had no detectable protective IgG, against six percent of those reporting natural infection, with geometric mean antibody levels of 92.2 and 213.3, respectively (Bianchi et al. 2021). A 2022 systematic review in the Journal of Infectious Diseases put the general finding in its title: in elimination settings, measles antibodies wane after vaccination but not after infection. Kennedy and colleagues at Mayo reached a parallel conclusion on the differential durability of the measles and mumps components of MMR (Kennedy et al. 2019).
