Jack Smith’s lawyers responded to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan’s criminal referral.

On Wednesday evening House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) criminally referred former special counsel Jack Smith to the Justice Department for prosecution.

In a letter to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Chairman Jordan said Jack Smith’s testimony included “intentionally false statements designed to obstruct the Committee’s oversight.”

“All individuals have an obligation to comply with a duly authorized congressional inquiry. Mr. Smith, a former public servant, is no different,” Jordan wrote in a letter to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Wednesday. “Yet his testimony included intentionally false statements designed to obstruct the Committee’s oversight.”

“His conduct can only be understood as an effort to thwart the Committee’s inquiry by intentionally making false statements and representations before Congress,” Jordan added, according to Fox News.

At issue is Jack Smith’s testimony to the House Judiciary Committee last December.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley last Tuesday revealed that Jack Smith spied on 44 members of Congress and actually read their text messages.

Jack Smith lied when asked if the records he requested included the contents of calls and texts.

A defiant Jack Smith pushed back on Jim Jordan on Friday.

“Mr. Smith agreed to testify before the House Judiciary Committee fully cognizant of the risk that President Trump’s Justice Department would try to find something in his testimony to serve as the basis for a criminal charge,” Jack Smith’s attorneys wrote in the letter obtained by Fox News.

“This risk existed not because Mr. Smith would make a false statement, but because President Trump has repeatedly ordered that Mr. Smith be prosecuted and jailed. That is not the rule of law. And it contravenes the principles that are critical to the vitality of our democracy.”

Jack Smith’s attorneys argued that the former special counsel was referring to the toll record subpoenas during the line of questioning.

“During his testimony, Mr. Smith provided truthful, responsive answers and candidly discussed his work as Special Counsel. This referral reflects a chilling eagerness to weaponize the justice system by attacking a career, nonpartisan public servant who faithfully and fearlessly performed his duties by following the facts and the law,” the lawyers wrote, according to Fox News.

“The toll record subpoenas that were the focus of those questions did not call for the content of text messages. The questions and answers preceding and following these exchanges also make clear that the focus of the questions was on the toll records subpoenas. Notably, the referral letter does not contest the truthfulness of Mr. Smith’s answers.”

Chairman Jordan blasted Jack Smith during an appearance on Fox News on Thursday morning.

Three Clashes in a Week Escalate China-Philippines Sea Feud

(Bloomberg) —The Philippines and China reported their third clash in the South China Sea this week that further heightened tensions, as the US flexed its presence in disputed waters.

China Coast Guard on Friday took “control measures” on multiple Philippine vessels conducting “illegal activities” at the Scarborough Shoal, according to a statement from the force. It didn’t elaborate on the measures taken.

The Philippine Coast Guard said its Chinese counterpart used water cannons against coast guard and fisheries bureau vessels, marking the second straight day of skirmishes at Scarborough Shoal. “The Philippine Coast Guard strongly condemns the dangerous and unprofessional actions of the China Coast Guard,” it said in a statement.

On Thursday, Manila said a China Coast Guard vessel fired a water cannon at a Filipino vessel for more than two minutes at the disputed shoal.

Amid the tensions, the US ramped up its rhetoric and presence in the region, which coincided with Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Manila for a summit. The US has a mutual defense treaty with the Philippines.

After meeting with Rubio, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. spoke on the phone with President Donald Trump late Thursday, and got an assurance from the US leader that Manila’s concerns will be raised at a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in September.

Also on Friday, the US Seventh Fleet posted a photo on X of the George Washington Carrier Strike Group transiting the Luzon Strait to conduct operations in the South China Sea.

The incidents at Scarborough Shoal took place after China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Philippines Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro met on Wednesday, where they exchanged strong protests in their first sit-down since 2024. Wang warned in that meeting that bilateral relations are “at a crossroads, and it is up to the Philippines to make the correct and rational choice.”

Tensions were already high earlier this week after the Philippines accused China Coast Guard personnel of aggressively striking and wounding a Navy serviceman with a wooden baton at the Second Thomas Shoal.

Rubio on Thursday said that a US Coast Guard vessel supported the Philippines during the incident earlier this week, standing between the two sides and allowing the injured sailor to be retrieved.

“So we are already here. We’re already present. We have a role, and we’re not going to abandon our allies,” he said, stressing that improving the US-China relationship won’t come at the expense of allies and partners.

China took effective control of the Scarborough Shoal, which it calls Huangyan Island, and its adjacent waters after a standoff with the Philippines in 2012. Beijing has created manmade islands and put up buildings in contested waters in a bid to assert its sweeping claims over the South China Sea, which have been rejected by a ruling of an international tribunal in 2016.

Elaine Escoe, 41, was charged by indictment in 2025 with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and multiple substantive counts of wire fraud and money laundering. After a federal arrest warrant was issued in May 2025, Escoe failed to appear for her court appearance and fled to Jamaica. Acting on information developed by the FBI, Jamaican authorities captured Escoe after receiving a tip. She was returned to South Florida today through the coordinated efforts of the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service Regional Security Office at the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, the Jamaican Constabulary Force (JCF), and the JCF Jamaica Fugitive Apprehension Team.

“This Most Wanted Fraudster allegedly obtained tens of millions in COVID-19 relief, stealing critical resources from legitimate businesses during a national crisis,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. “She fled the country believing she could escape justice but ultimately could not. Those who exploit taxpayer-funded programs will be held accountable by this Department of Justice, no matter how long it takes or where they attempt to hide.”

“Elaine Angene Escoe’s arrest and return to the United States demonstrates that no one is beyond the reach of American justice,” said Assistant Attorney General Colin M.
