Departments of Defense, Labor Sued for Organizing Christian Prayer Services

A decades-old nonprofit organization has sued the Departments of Defense (DOD) and Labor (DOL) for not responding to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests pertaining to what they claim is “how the federal government is advancing Christian nationalism.”

Americans United (AU) for Separation of Church and State, a religious freedom advocacy organization founded in 1947 that advocates for the disassociation of religion from government, filed the lawsuits on Monday in the U.S. District Court for Washington, D.C. The litigation stems from FOIA requests made in December 2025, calling on DOD and DOL to provide public records related to the planning and hosting of the departments’ Christian prayer services that have been customary dating back to May 2025.

In particular, AU is seeking records that document communications with department employees, contractors and other agencies; costs related to putting on such events; the amount of time department employees spent coordinating them; invited speakers and guests; transcripts or recordings; and any complaints from employees relating to the prayer services.

“The federal government’s role is to serve the public, not to proselytize,” Americans United President and CEO Rachel Laser said in a statement shared with Military.com. “Secretaries Hegseth and Chavez-DeRemer are abusing the power of their government positions and taxpayer-funded resources to impose their preferred religion on federal workers.

“Even if these prayer services are presented as voluntary, there is pressure on federal employees to attend in order to appease their bosses—especially since these services occur amidst the Trump administration’s campaign to punish anyone who doesn’t comply with its Christian nationalist agenda.”

When reached for comment, a Pentagon spokesperson deferred comment to the Department of Justice. Both the DOJ and DOL did not respond to inquiries from Military.com.

Iran has denied engaging in talks with the US, and officials familiar with the matter have clarified that what has taken place in recent days has been more of a passing along of messages through mediators.

Trump:Iran gave US ‘present’ related to Strait of Hormuz

In the Oval Office, Trump reiterated that he had been planning to bomb Iran’s main power plant until Tehran purportedly reached out over the weekend, expressing interest in negotiating a deal to end the war.

The president said he was demanding in talks that Iran not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon and insisted that Tehran had already agreed to that. Iran has long said it’s not pursuing a nuclear weapon, but has been enriching uranium at weapons-grade levels.

He went on to say that Iran had given him a “present” worth a “tremendous amount of money” related to the Strait of Hormuz and matters of oil and gas.

Asked by reporters why he trusts the Iranians, Trump first insisted that he doesn’t trust anyone before adding, “They did something yesterday that was amazing — they gave us a present… that arrived today.”

“It was a very big present worth a tremendous amount of money,and I’m not going to tell you what that present is, but it was a very significant prize,”he said.

“They gave it to us, and they said they were going to give it.That meant one thing to me.[That we’re] dealing with the right people… They’re the only ones [who] could have done it,” Trump continued.

“It wasn’t nuclear related, it was oil and gas related,” he added when pressed to clarify the nature of the gift.

Asked if the gift was related to the flow in the Strait of Hormuz, Trump responded, “Yeah.” Asked if the US would control Hormuz after the war, Trump said, “We’ll have control of anything we want.”

“I think we’re going to end [the war],” he added.

Trump quipped that when he told his defense secretary and military chief that he thought the Iran war would be settled soon,the latter two were upset because they wanted to keep fighting.

According to court documents, Thelmo Meneses Santos, Jr., 60, of Merced, sexually abused two minor children multiple times between 2015 and 2023. Santos began sexually abusing both of the minor victims when they were 11 years old. Santos sexually abused the two minors in Japan, where he was employed by the U.S. Army as a civilian employee. During the investigation, Santos gave an interview to law enforcement officers where he admitted to engaging in sexual acts with both minor children. Justice Neil Gorsuch, who appeared considerably less sympathetic to Mississippi, expressed concern that voters could recall or revoke their votes before they were actually counted, so that their final choices would not occur before Election Day.Gorsuch asked Stewart to address a hypothetical scenario in which, after Election Day but before a winner is declared, a candidate is revealed to have been colluding with a foreign power. As a result, Gorsuch posited, some absentee voters could recall their mail-in ballots and switch their votes, changing the outcome of the election.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson pushed back, emphasizing that in her view the case was not about either ballot recalls or what the history of election practices might have been. Instead, she stressed, the dispute before the justices was over who decides the date by which ballots must be received, and, in particular, whether Congress has prohibited the states from making those decisions. “We’re trying … to figure out,” she said, “what Congress meant when it included Election Day in its federal statutes.”

Justice Samuel Alito suggested that in defending the law, Mississippi faced “a variety of line-drawing problems” –the idea that the state’s position, if taken to its logical conclusion, could lead to extreme and (at least in Alito’s view) undesirable outcomes. For example, he asked Stewart, how long after Election Day can states count ballots?

Stewart’s answer – that states get to make the initial decision, but Congress can always step in to impose limits – proved unsatisfying to Alito.

But Jackson once again pushed back, telling Alito that line-drawing problems “are only problems to the extent that Congress thought they were problems.” The question before the court, she noted, is whether Congress intended to “cabin” the states’ decisions regarding Election Day. And indeed, she said, several federal laws – such as those governing voting for military and overseas voters – indicate that Congress intended to incorporate state laws establishing post-election ballot-receipt deadlines into federal law.

Jackson later noted that Congress is currently considering a bill that would prohibit states from counting ballots received after Election Day. The fact that it believes such legislation is necessary, she posited, indicates that Congress believes that federal law currently permits laws like Mississippi’s.

Justice Elena Kagan echoed Jackson’s thinking. She observed that a 2022 law intended to clarify the process for casting and counting of presidential electors, the Electoral Count Reform Act, specifically refers to “the period of voting.” The use of that phrase, she told Clement, implied that Congress is “fine” with states having a “period” for voting, rather than a single day.

Clement answered that the phrase “period of voting” was intended to refer to early voting. But that answer seemed to create some difficulty for the challengers, as various justices pressed both Sauer and Clement about why, under their position, the statute would allow early voting (which was also not used in early U.S. history) but preclude ballots received after Election Day.

Clement told the court that early voting does not “vitiate the whole idea of an Election Day” in the same way that counting ballots received after Election Day does. And in particular, he emphasized, it does not raise the same concerns about fraud – which were at the core of Congress’ motives in passing the law at the center of the case in the first place.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh had a practical question for Clement. If the court were to rule for the challengers in a decision issued in June, Kavanaugh queried, would it be too late to implement that decision for the 2026 elections?

Clement responded that it would not be. Under federal law, he noted, absentee ballots must go out to military and overseas voters 45 days before the general election in November – which would mean that states would have to mail them in mid-September.

As Kavanaugh’s question suggests, a decision in the case is expected by late June or early July.

Russian Citizen Sentenced to Federal Prison for Hacking into U.S. Companies and Enabling Major Cybercrime Groups to Extort Tens of Millions of Dollars

SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF INDIANA- Aleksei Volkov, 26, of St. Petersburg, Russia, has been sentenced to 81 months in federal prison for assisting major cybercrime groups, including the Yanluowang ransomware group, carry out numerous attacks against U.S. companies and other organizations. Volkov facilitated dozens of ransomware attacks throughout the United States, causing over $9 million in actual losses and over $24 million in intended losses.

Volkov was indicted for this activity in both the Southern District of Indiana and Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Police in Rome, Italy arrested Volkov and he was extradited to the United States, where he pleaded guilty to unlawful transfer of a means of identification, trafficking in access information, access device fraud, and aggravated identity theft; as well as two counts from the Eastern District of Pennsylvania indictment, namely, conspiracy to commit computer fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering after the two cases were consolidated in the Southern District of Indiana.

According to court documents, Volkov was an “initial access broker,” that is, a person who specializes in gaining unauthorized access to computer networks and systems of corporations and organizations and selling that access to other cyber threat actors such as ransomware groups. Volkov scoured computer networks and systems for vulnerabilities, identified ways to access those networks and systems without authorization, and sold that illicit access to conspirators who were also cybercriminals.

Volkov’s conspirators then infected computer networks and systems to which Volkov had given them access with malware. This malware encrypted the victims’ data and prevented the victims from accessing it, damaging their business operations. The conspirators then demanded that the victims pay them a ransom in cryptocurrency—sometimes in the tens of millions of dollars—in exchange for restoring the victims’ access to the data and promising not to publicly disclose the hack or release victims’ stolen data on a “leak” website. In some cases, the victims paid the ransom and in others the conspirators posted the victims’ confidential data on the leak site. If the victims paid the ransom, Volkov received a share of the money.

As part of his plea, Volkov admitted that he and his co-conspirators hacked into numerous victims’ computer networks, stole their data, deployed ransomware, demanded payment in cryptocurrency to exchange for restoring access to the data, and divided the ransom payments among themselves. In fact, they demanded tens of millions of dollars in ransom and received millions. Volkov agreed to pay full restitution to victims including at least $9,167,198.19 to known victims to compensate them for their actual losses as well as to forfeit equipment he used for his crimes.

“This case shows the strength and determination of our federal prosecutors and partners to protect American companies from global cybercriminals. MACON, Ga. – A Mexican national and member of the Sinaloa Cartel, who was involved in a major methamphetamine and cocaine distribution organization out of Monroe, Georgia, and discussed his frustration with no longer receiving “busloads” of illegal drugs and preparing for a visit by the son of Sinaloa’s leader was sentenced to serve more than 15 years in prison for his crime resulting from an Operation Take Back America investigation led by the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations.

Jose Guadalupe Favela, 68, a citizen of Mexico and legally in the United States as a resident of Riverdale, Georgia, and formerly of Monroe, Georgia, was sentenced to 188 months in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Tilman E. “Tripp” Self, III on March 9. Favela pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of methamphetamine on Sept. 22, 2025.

Luis Mejina Pina, aka “La Perra,” 32, of Richmond, California, was sentenced to 48 months in prison on Dec. 3, 2025, after he pleaded guilty to one count of use of a communication facility to facilitate possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine on Sept. 18, 2025; and

ST. LOUIS – U.S. District Judge John A. Ross on Tuersday sentenced a former St. Louis County, Missouri pediatrician to 20 years in prison for prescribing pain pills and other controlled substances in exchange for sex acts, nude photos or cash.

From at least 2014 through May of 2023, Craig A. Spiegel, now 70, exploited his position to obtain cash, sexual acts or sexual photographs from at least 19 patients, many of whom he began treating as children. Spiegel illegally distributed an “astronomical amount of drugs,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Sestric said in court. Rather than referring patients with a substance use disorder to treatment, Spiegel exploited their disease for his own gratification and prescribed dangerous combinations of addictive drugs to those vulnerable victims. Spiegel pressured and harassed reluctant patients via text messages and became sexually violent with at least one victim, Sestric said. Spiegel met one of his victims when she was only about seven or eight years old and initiated sexual contact years later by preying on her vulnerability when she was going through a divorce, a sentencing memo filed by Sestric said.

Spiegel admitted prescribing controlled substances to his co-defendant, April Bingham, in exchange for sexual favors. He knew that she was selling some of the drugs, and that she was addicted. He prescribed drugs to Bingham using the names of friends and relatives in part to take advantage of their insurance benefits. Bingham then introduced Spiegel to others who paid him or performed sex acts in exchange for controlled substances.

Spiegel’s crimes were only thwarted by an investigation that began with the Bridgeton Police Department. After his indictment, Spiegel lied in an April 2025 hearing in U.S. District Court in St. Louis while accusing police officers of illegally searching his cellular phone. Spiegel falsely claimed, in court and under oath, that he had not signed a consent form authorizing the search of his cellular phone until after the cellular phone data had been extracted by investigators.

The Bridgeton Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG), the FBI, and the Missouri Attorney General’s Office Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Amy Sestric and Jonathan Clow prosecuted the case.

“Dr. Craig Spiegel is no better than a street-level drug dealer. He knowingly exploited individuals struggling with addiction, not to treat them, but to keep them dependent,” said Special Agent in Charge Chris Crocker of the FBI St. Louis Division. “For years, he fueled that addiction to ensure a steady stream of victims for his own sexual gratification. Spiegel didn’t just violate his oath as a physician, he preyed on vulnerable women and put their lives at serious risk of overdose.”

Defendant Ran International Narcotics Pipeline Using a Contraband Phone While Incarcerated at Fort Dix

WASHINGTON – Samuel Braxton, 57, aka “Fats,” of Temple Hills, Maryland, was sentenced today to 162 months in federal prison for leading a drug trafficking organization that imported and distributed massive quantities of fentanyl, fentanyl analogue, and heroin in the Washington metropolitan area — all while he was incarcerated at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Braxton pleaded guilty Dec. 8, 2025, before Judge Trevor N. McFadden to conspiracy to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl, 100 grams or more of a fentanyl analogue, and 100 grams or more of heroin. In addition to the prison term, Judge McFadden ordered Braxton to serve five years of supervised release.

“Braxton’s criminal history spans 36 years and includes four drug trafficking convictions. In his latest offense, he orchestrated an international narcotics pipeline—all while inside a federal prison cell,” said U.S. Attorney Pirro. “Now, Braxton will spend more than 13 additional years behind bars. Together with the DEA and our law enforcement partners, we will hold traffickers at every level of the production and distribution chain accountable.”

According to court documents, Braxton was the top and unifying member of a drug trafficking conspiracy involving at least eight individuals that operated from at least July 2021 until November 2023.

Using a contraband cell phone from his housing unit at Fort Dix where he was serving a sentence for a prior federal drug conviction, Braxton brokered connections between foreign nationals who supplied kilogram quantities of fentanyl, fentanyl analogue, and heroin, and co-conspirators Wayne Glymph and Ronnie Rogers, who received, cut, repackaged, and redistributed the drugs throughout the Washington area. Court-authorized wiretaps were placed on Braxton's contraband phone, and the phone was ultimately seized from his housing unit by law enforcement during the investigation.
