Israeli minister calls for annexation of southern Lebanon

Israel should seize vast swathes of land in southern Lebanon as part of its ongoing campaign against Hezbollah militants, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has stated. The new border should be moved all the way to the Litani River, located nearly 40 kilometers from Lebanon’s southern border with Israel, he said on Israeli radio on Monday.

West Jerusalem started a military campaign against Hezbollah in early March after the Lebanese-based militant movement launched waves of strikes on the Jewish state in retaliation for the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The attacks followed a joint US-Israeli campaign against Iran launched on February 28.

Israel has since ordered all residents of southern Lebanon to leave the area south of the Litani due to what it called “limited and targeted ground operations against key Hezbollah strongholds.” According to the Lebanese authorities, the Israeli strikes have killed over 880 people over the past two weeks, with more than 2,000 injured and over one million displaced.

“I say here definitively… in every room and in every discussion, too:the new Israeli border must be the Litani,”Smotrich said. The campaign “needs to end with a different reality entirely, both with the Hezbollah decision but also with the change of Israel’s borders,” he added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has not responded to a request by Reuters to comment. Previously, Defense Minister Israel Katz also said that Lebanon could lose territory if it fails to disarm Hezbollah. On Sunday, the Israeli military announced plans to expand both ground and air operations in southern Lebanon.

A Lebanese official told Reuters that Beirut expects foreign nations to put pressure on West Jerusalem to halt its campaign. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Israel’s actions in Lebanon as “inappropriate and even unacceptable.” He also argued that repeated Israeli operations against Hezbollah have never produced the desired results.

Israel has launched military campaigns against Hezbollah on multiple occasions since 1978 and occupied southern Lebanon between 1982 and 2000.

Geneva, March 24 (SANA) The United Nations announced on Tuesday that more than 500 civilians have been killed by drone strikes in Sudan from the beginning of the year through mid-March.

the report highlights a dangerous escalation in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) within the country’s ongoing conflict.

Speaking in Geneva, Marta Hurtado, spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, told AFP that the significant surge in drone deployment this year underscores the “devastating and growing nature” of low-cost weaponry when utilized in densely populated areas.

Hurtado specified that at least 512 civilians were killed in such strikes between January 1 and March 15 of this year. She noted that the majority of these attacks were concentrated in the Kordofan region.

The UN official emphasized that this escalation reflects the severe risks posed by modern military technologies in internal conflicts, particularly when precision is sacrificed in civilian-heavy zones.

The UN statement follows a bloody Monday in which at least 15 people were killed and dozens more wounded during a bombardment targeting the city of Lagawa in West Kordofan State.

The conflict between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which erupted in mid-April 2023, continues unabated. Despite international pressure, political efforts to reach a resolution remain stalled.

British warship ‘fights off’ attack drones in serials

Royal Navy destroyer HMS Duncan has successfully tracked and neutralised multiple drone threats during a live-fire training exercise off the Welsh coast, as part of a QinetiQ-led programme designed to replicate modern warfare conditions.

Exercise Sharpshooter, a four-day event delivered in collaboration with Fleet Operational Standards and Training, placed the Type 45 destroyer in a high-intensity scenario involving simultaneous aerial and surface threats, according to QinetiQ.

The scenario, developed by QinetiQ-owned Inzpire, combined live and synthetic elements, with the ship targeted by Banshee Whirlwind aerial drones and Hammerhead uncrewed surface vessels, alongside simulated cruise missiles, anti-ship ballistic missiles and hostile aircraft.

The training environment at MOD Aberporth was designed to test the full spectrum of the ship’s combat system, from detection through to engagement, across both day and night conditions.

During the exercise, HMS Duncan’s crew tracked and neutralised five aerial targets and destroyed two surface drones, meeting all assigned objectives.

Will Blamey, Chief Executive, UK Defence at QinetiQ, said the exercise was intended to reflect the complexity of contemporary threats.

“Our combination of live and synthetic threats mean we can deliver training scenarios that provide the very latest in threat representation, helping our warfighters to achieve mission-readiness at pace.”UK Defence Strategy

Commander Dan Lee, commanding officer of HMS Duncan, said the realism of the scenario allowed the ship’s company to operate as they would on deployment.

“The realism of Sharpshooter… gave my Ship’s Company the opportunity to prove they are ready to defend, ready to fight and ready to win.”

He added that the crew left the exercise “more confident, more capable and better prepared.”

QinetiQ said the exercise forms part of its wider role in delivering test and training across land, air, sea and cyber domains.

Similar activity has included participation by allied navies, with the Dutch frigate HNLMS Evertsen taking part in a previous iteration aimed at improving NATO interoperability.

Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., says some intelligence agencies have thwarted his attempts at finding out what happened to several prominent scientists and researchers in the U.S. who reportedly died or went missing the past year.

"The numbers seem very high in these certain areas of research. I think we'd better be paying attention, and I don't think we should trust our government," he told the Daily Mail.

William Neil McCasland, a 68-year-old retired Air Force general who was the commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, where he managed what his biography on the Air Force website said was a "$2.2 billion science and technology program as well as additional customer-funded research and development of $2.2 billion," went missing in New Mexico on Feb. 27.

He was also associated with the unidentified flying object community.

Monica Reza, a rocket scientist with ties to McCasland, disappeared last June in the Angeles National Forest while hiking with two friends. Reza, 60, invented a breakthrough rocket-engine alloy with NASA.

"Everybody's talking about the UFO stuff," Burchett told the Daily Mail. "Those folks are very secretive about what they know. So I suspect very much that [McCasland] was involved in some of that."

In December, Nuno Loureiro, 47, director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Plasma Science and Fusion Center, was shot to death at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Last month, California Institute of Technology astrophysicist Carl Grillmair, 67, who studied distant planets and other areas of astronomy for decades, was shot dead on his porch.

"There have been several others throughout the country that have disappeared under suspicious circumstances," Burchett told the outlet. "I think we ought to be paying attention to it."

Sexual harassment in the British Armed Forces has long become a problem.

The Armed Forces Sexualized Behaviors and Sexual Harassment Survey, published by the UK Ministry of Defense (MoD) in November 2025, covered experiences across the Army, Royal Navy, and RAF.

The survey revealed that 67% of female regular personnel in the UK Armed Forces (and 69% in the Navy) experienced at least one form of sexualized behavior in the past 12 months.

One specific issue includes 32% of women reporting unwanted physical touching or groping.

But it seems that this sexual misconduct has become a two-way street, as a female sailor is being court-martialed for carrying out seven ‘opportunistic sexual assaults’ on male and female shipmates.

“Able Seaman Sian Dowsett, 25, allegedly groped four of her Royal Navy colleagues – two men and two women.

Based on HMS Dauntless, AB Dowsett is accused of grabbing the men by their crotches, stroking their arms, and making comments such as: ‘I like my coffee how I like my men, big and strong’.

She allegedly smacked women sailors’ bottoms and squeezed their breasts, on one occasion asking: ‘Do you like that, baby girl?’”

At Bulford Military Court, Dowsett was described as a ‘cancer on the ship’ by one seaman.

“Prosecutors said her offences ‘ranged from nipple-pinching to bottom-slapping and genital-grabbing’ but AB Dowsett denied the seven counts of sexual assault on the two men and two women.”

LA shelter dogs flown to Chicago after massive animal rescue to get star-studded Windy City welcome

More than 300 dogs and cats were seized from a home in Lake Hughes last week, leading several facilities around the county to take the animals in.

The nonprofit group Wings of Rescue stepped in an organized their flight to Chicago, creating “immediate space so these confiscated pets can be cared for without losing innocent lives.”

Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has been pushing President Trump to continue the war against Iran,arguing that the U.S.-Israeli military campaign presents a “historic opportunity” to remake the Middle East, according to people briefed by American officials on the conversations.

In a series of conversations over the last week, Prince Mohammed has conveyed to Mr. Trump thathe must press toward the destruction of Iran’s hard-line government, the people familiar with the conversations said.

Prince Mohammed, the people familiar with the discussions said, has argued thatIran poses a long-term threat to the Gulf that can only be eliminated by getting rid of the government.

The consequences of the war for Saudi Arabia’s economy and national security are enormous. Iranian drone and missile attacks, launched in response to the American-Israeli assault on Iran, have already created huge disruptions in the oil market.

Saudi officials rejected the idea that Prince Mohammed has pushed to prolong the war.

“The kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always supported a peaceful resolution to this conflict, even before it began,” theSaudi government saidin a statement, noting that officials“remain in close contact with the Trump administration and our commitment remains unchanged.”

“Our primary concern today is todefend ourselvesfrom the daily attacks on our people and our civilian infrastructure,” the government added. “Iran has chosen dangerous brinkmanshipover serious diplomatic solutions. This harms every stakeholder involvedbut none more than Iran itself.”

In recent days,Mr. Trump has given more serious consideration to a military operation to seize Kharg Island, the hub of Iran’s oil infrastructure. Such an operation, with airborne Army forces or an amphibious assault by Marines, would be immensely dangerous.

But Prince Mohammed has advocated ground operationsin his conversations with Mr. Trump, according to people briefed by American officials.

The Saudi views of thewar are shaped by economic factors as much as political ones. Since the war began, Iran’s retaliatory attacks have largely choked off the Strait of Hormuz, hobbling the region’s energy industry. The vast majority of Saudi, Emirati and Kuwaiti oil must pass through the strait to reach international markets.

While Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have built pipelines to circumvent the strait,those alternative routes have come under attack as well.

Analysts familiar with Saudi government thinking say that whilePrince Mohammed probably preferred to avoid a war, he is concerned that if Mr. Trump pulls back now, Saudi Arabia and the rest of theMiddle East will be left to confront an emboldened and furious Iran on their own.

In this view, they say,a half-finished offensive would expose Saudi Arabia to frequent Iranian attacks. Such a scenario could also leave Iran with the power to periodically close the Strait of Hormuz.

“Saudi officials certainly want the war to end, but how it ends matters,” said Yasmine Farouk, director of the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula project for the International Crisis Group.

A 2019 Iran-backed attack on Saudi oil facilities — which briefly knocked out half of the kingdom’s oil production — ==pushed the prince to reconsider his antagonistic approach to the Islamic Republic.•=

Saudi officials later pursued a diplomaticdétente, re-establishing relations with Iran in 2023, in part because they realized that their country’s alliance with the United States offered only partial protection from Iran, Saudi officials have said.

After Mr. Trump’s decision to go to war, against the advice of several Gulf governments, Iran responded by shooting thousands of missiles and drones at countries in the region,derailing their efforts to bring Iran into their fold, Gulf officials have said.

While Saudi Arabia is better positioned than the other Gulf countries to weather the closure of the strait,it could face dire ramifications if the waterway is not reopened soon.

Even before the war began, PrinceMohammed was facing serious financial challenges as he approached the 2030 deadlinehe had set for himself to transform Saudi Arabia into a global business hub. His government is forecasting budget deficits for several years to come as ambitious megaprojects and vast investments in artificial intelligence strain the country’s limited resources.

A prolonged war with Iran would put all of that at risk. The prince’s success hinges on creating a secure environment for investors and tourists.

Asked last week whether the Saudi government preferred an immediate end to the war or a longer conflict in which Iran’s capabilities were degraded,Prince Faisal, the Saudi foreign minister, told reporters that the only thing that officials cared about was halting Iranian attacks on Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries.

“We’re going to use every lever we have — political, economic, diplomatic and else-wise — to get these attacks to stop,” Prince Faisal said.
