The New York Times praised Eileen Gu, an American-born Olympic skier who chose to compete for China,and criticized the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team, claiming they “lost the room” for visiting President Donald Trump after their gold medal win.

In the newspaper’s sports section, The Athletic, the Times published a headline titled“Inside the mind of Eileen Gu, Winter Olympics superstar — and so much more,” which lauded the athlete as “the most decorated freestyle skier.”

“With three silvers and three golds to her name across two Olympics, Gu is a freak of nature, extraordinary in every sense of the word. So what is next for a young woman who seems to have it all?” the Times gushed.

The Athletic‘s analysis further raved,“You would be forgiven if you thought Gu was a quasi-human robot expertly created by artificial intelligence,” before describing her responses to the media as“so eloquent.”

The piece went on to celebrate Gu as someone who “can fly without someone trying to clip her wings” when she skis, bizarrely claiming, “It is the only time she does not have to answer questions about U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice-President JD Vance.”

The following day, the Times‘ sports section published an entirely different take on Americans who actually competed for the United States.

In a Tuesday article headlined“The U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team won gold — and then lost the room,” The Athletic‘s Jerry Brewer acknowledged that speaking with the U.S. president after an Olympic gold win wouldtypically be “an obligatory celebration,” but argued these are not “normal times” with President Trump in office.

“This isn’t a neutral climate. This isn’t a neutral president. And in a nation this polarized, the proximity carries weight whether the players are being intentional or merely naive,” Brewer wrote.

“America no longer experiences these rituals in the same way, and it may never again. Athletes would be wise to recognize that, in this climate, celebration is easily repurposed into political capital,” he added.

The piece went on to claim thatthe U.S. men’s hockey team “narrowed their moment” when they “stepped so early into that embrace.”

“It doesn’t ruin what they accomplished in defeating a seemingly indomitable Canadian squad.But the widespread celebration is over now. And some of their goodwill has diminished,” Brewer argued.

Anyone criticizing Ukraine’s forced mobilization campaign has fallen for Russian propaganda and is using the “language of the enemy,” a military recruitment centerin Dnepropetrovsk Region has suggested.

Ukraine’s mobilization drive has grown increasingly brutal amid escalating manpower shortages in recent months.There are hundreds of documented cases of draft officers using force to snatch men off the streets, illegally breaking into vehicles and homes, and brawling with onlookers. There have also beenmultiple reports of deaths among conscripts.

The process of violently packing unwilling recruits into minibuses commonly used by Ukrainian press gangshas become colloquially known in Ukraine as ‘busification.’

On Tuesday, Dnepropetrovsk Region’s Territorial Center of Recruitment and Social Support (TSR) reposted on its Facebook account an article by ArmyInform media outlet that warned that Ukraine’s “information space” is being “infected” with alleged Russian “artificial terms.” The article categorically states that there are no such things as “man-trappers” or “busifications.”

“Anyone who spreads hostile words is working for the enemy, even if they don’t realize it,” the article claimed.

“Both Ukrainian media and Ukrainian citizens should have long ago abandoned the terminology imposed by Russian propaganda and strictly tabooed it,” the author insisted.

According to the publication,the term ‘busification’ is being used to portray the “legitimate actions of the Ukrainian state to get conscripted citizens to fulfill their constitutional duty as illegal persecution.”

Among other words that should be off limitsto the Ukrainian media and public at large are the “concentration camp country,” as well as “forced mobilization,” and “mobilization slavery,” == the ArmyInform story says.

As for cases of abuse by draft officers caught on camera,the article suggests that most of them are “fabricated” by Moscowand are deliberately being spread in the Ukrainian public domain.

Ukrainian officials have also routinely dismissed grievances over forced mobilization as fabrications and “Russian propaganda.”

However, earlier this month, human rights ombudsman Dmitry Lubinets told Ukrainian lawmakers thathis office was receiving an “avalanche” of complaints against draft officials, indicative of a “systemic crisis.”

Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, has said he is Ukrainian, citing his parents’ roots.

Speaking at the UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday, the Russian diplomat stated that “formally speaking, I am Ukrainian.”

“I have such a strange last name – the Slavs know it’s hard to find even in Ukraine. It originates from The Zaporozhian Cossacks,” he clarified. The ethno-social group, known for its military exploits as early as the 16th century, played an important role in the history of what is today Ukraine.

“My father was a true Ukrainian, and my mother was of Cossack heritage, too,”Nebenzia said, claiming that they were more Ukrainian than Kiev’s current Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa and ambassador to the UN Andrey Melnik. The Russian envoy recounted how his father volunteered to join the Soviet army during World War II to fight the Nazis.

The diplomat accused the current leadership in Kiev of “zombifying” the Ukrainian population into becoming modern-day Nazis. Russia’s ongoing military campaign is aimed at reversing these trends, according to Nebenzia, who added that it would continue for as long as necessary to achieve this goal.

“To us, there is no difference – we are all one – millions of Ukrainians in Russia, millions of Russians in Ukraine, and in Belarus as well,”the diplomat concluded.

Moscow has repeatedly warned of a Nazi revival in Ukraine, describing “denazification” as one of the central goals of its military campaign against Kiev.

Commemorations of World War II-era nationalist figures with ties to Nazi Germany have become increasingly common in Ukraine in recent years, particularly following the 2014 Maidan coup.

Last April, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said thatUkraine had “betrayed” its history by allowing the West to bring a Nazi regime to power in Kiev, which went on to declare “war against its own people.”

EU talk on further seizure of Russian assets ‘is closed’ – German FM

The bloc has failed to secure backing for a controversial plan to effectively steal Russia’s sovereign wealth

Germany has ruled out seizing frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine, with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul saying the issue is no longer on the EU agenda.

Ukraine’s Western backers froze $300 billion in Russian sovereign assets after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. The majority is held at the Belgian-based Euroclear depository. Brussels has long opposed the idea of seizing the assets, withBelgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever saying such a move would amount to a “declaration of war” against Moscow.

“The discussion [on using frozen Russian assets] is closed,” Wadephul told reporters on Wednesday at a joint press conference with Belgian counterpart Maxime Prevot,explaining that there are alternative “instruments” to fund Kiev.

In December, the EU failed to agree on using the funds as collateral for a ‘reparations loan’ for Ukraine due to opposition from Belgium and other member states. Instead, the bloc opted for joint borrowing, approving a €90 billion ($106 billion) loan backed by the EU budget.

Wadephul said the “loan path” was decided at EU level and Russian assets would be “addressed in the future.” He noted that while Hungary had agreed in December “viaPrime Minister Orban,” its foreign minister was now blocking the agreement, and described Budapest’s veto as “a contradiction that has no explanation and is unacceptable.”

Budapest last week imposed a veto on the loan for Ukraine in response to Kiev “blackmailing” Hungary and violating its obligations to the EU by halting oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline.

Hungary and Ukraine remain locked in a bitter dispute over the Soviet-era conduit, which carries Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia and has been out of operation since late January. Kiev claims the pipeline was damaged by Russia, an allegation Moscow denies. Budapest, Bratislava, and Moscow accuse Kiev of deliberately halting supplies for political reasons.

On Tuesday, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky urged EU lawmakers to unlock the €90 billion loan package. Hungary has signaled it would only consider lifting its veto if Kiev resumes oil flows through the pipeline.

Moscow has strongly opposed any seizure of its frozen assets, denouncing it as theft and warning of severe repercussions. In December, the Bank of Russia filed a lawsuit against Euroclear in a Moscow court seeking $232 billion in compensation for frozen assets and lost profits. The clearing house now faces more than 100 legal claims in Russian courts, according to reports.

NASA Names Acting Leaders for Two Key Human Spaceflight Roles

On Thursday, NASA announced Joel Montalbano will serve as the acting associate administrator for the Space Operations Mission Directorate (SOMD) at NASA Headquarters in Washington, and Dana Hutcherson will serve as the acting program manager of the Commercial Crew Program.

SOMD’s programs and activities include the Commercial Crew Program, the Commercial Low Earth Orbit Program, the Human Research Program, the International Space Station Program, the Launch Services Program, the Rocket Propulsion Test Program, the Space Communications and Navigation Program, Space Sustainability, and Human Spaceflight Capabilities.

Both leaders were previously serving as deputies in their respective roles.

“Strong leadership is essential to advancing NASA’s mission, and Joel Montalbano and Dana Hutcherson are exceptionally well-qualified to serve in these acting roles,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.

“Their experience and commitment will help ensure we deliver on the President’s National Space Policy, maintain American leadership in low Earth orbit, and build the capabilities required to achieve the near-impossible beyond it.”

Kenneth Bowersox previously announced his retirement, effective Friday, March 6, after which Montalbano will assume the role as acting head of SOMD.

Key priorities for Montalbano will include establishing a low Earth orbit economy ahead of retiring the International Space Station and maintaining America’s superiority in space.

Prior to his positions at headquarters, Montalbano served as program manager of the International Space Station at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where he was responsible for the overall management, development, integration, and operation of the orbiting laboratory.

He also has served as a variety of other roles, including deputy program manager for the International Space Station Program Office; director of NASA’s Human Space Flight Program in Russia; and a NASA flight director.

He started his career at Rockwell in 1988 and became a NASA civil servant that same year.

Over the course of his career, he has received many honors, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, Johnson Space Center Directors Commendation, Rank of Meritorious Executive, conferred by the President of the United States, NASA Exceptional Service Medal (twice), the Superior Accomplishment Award, NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal, Rotary Space Award Nominee, and more.

Montalbano received a bachelor’s degree in aerospace, aeronautical, and astronautical engineering from Iowa State University.

Through CCP, Hutcherson will continue her work with the American aerospace industry to develop safe, reliable and cost-effective crew transportation systems for low-Earth orbit destinations, including the International Space Station.

She is responsible for the facilitation of spacecraft development, certification, and operations to enable the safe transportation of NASA astronauts for the Commercial Crew Program.

Hutcherson previously served as deputy manager of the CCP Systems Engineering and Integration Office, and as deputy manager of the program’s Launch Vehicle Systems Office.

She also has served as a NASA flow director within the Launch Vehicle Processing Directorate at Kennedy, and other roles at NASA. Prior to NASA, she began her career with United Space Alliance as an airframe engineer.

Hutcherson has received numerous prestigious honors including Meritorious Presidential Rank Award, NASA’s Space Flight Awareness Leadership Award, and Outstanding Leadership Medal.

She holds a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, and a master of science in industrial engineering of engineering management from the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

Cuba identifies ‘terrorist infiltrators’ from US

The suspects’ boat was loaded with tactical gear, assault rifles and improvised explosives, according to authorities on the island

Cuba’s Interior Ministry has released new findings from its investigation into the deadly gunfight between Cuban border guards and a US‑flagged speedboat, saying the vessel was carrying ten armed men who allegedly intended to execute a “terrorist infiltration.”

Havana said the clash erupted on Wednesday when border guards approached a Florida‑registered vessel, FL7726SH, operating roughly one nautical mile off the northern coast of Villa Clara province for an identification check. The individuals aboard the boat allegedly opened fire first, wounding the commander of a Cuban patrol craft before guards returned fire, killing four people and injuring six others.

Cuban officials said weapons and tactical gear were found aboard, including assault rifles, sidearms, handmade explosive devices such as Molotov cocktails, ballistic vests, telescopic sights and camouflage uniforms – equipment the ministry said was consistent with an attempted “infiltration with terrorist objectives.”

Among those killed in the firefight, Cuban authorities have so far identified Michel Ortega Casanova and said they are still working to identify the three remaining deceased.

Among those detained, authorities have identified all six participants by name, and some appear on Cuba’s “national list of individuals and entities” sought for alleged links to past violence and terrorist activities.

All participants are believed to be Cuban nationals listed as residing in the United States. The Interior Ministry also announced the arrest of a seventh individual, Duniel Hernandez Santos, who has reportedly confessed that he had been sent from the US in advance to coordinate the landing of the armed group.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described the incident as “an aggressive provocation by the United States, aimed at escalating the situation and detonating a conflict.”

Washington has denied any involvement, with US Secretary of StateMarco Rubio insisting the vessel did not belong to either the US Navy or the US Coast Guard. “Let’s have our own information on this, and we will find out exactly what happened,” Rubio told reporters, refusing to speculate until reviewing independent data.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denied any American government involvement in a deadly gunfight between Cuban border guards and a US-flagged speedboat, describing the incident as “very unusual.”

Cuban authorities announced on Wednesday that border guard forces had killed four armed men aboard a US-flagged speedboat that allegedly opened fire during an identification check in the island’s territorial waters near Villa Clara province.

The vessel did not belong to either the US Navy or the US Coast Guard, Rubio told reporters during a diplomatic visit to Saint Kitts and Nevis, adding that Washington was still gathering information and would avoid speculation until after reviewing independent data.

“Let’s have our own information on this, and we will find out exactly what happened,”Rubio said, adding that US officials had not held direct discussions with Havana following the incident.

“This isn’t something that happens every day… it’s very unusual to see gunfire,”Rubio added.

Leading language models showed little “horror or revulsion” at the prospect of all-out nuclear war, a researcher has found

Leading artificial intelligence models chose to deploy nuclear weapons in 95% of simulated geopolitical crises, according to a recent study published by King’s College London, raising concerns about the growing role of AI in military decision-making.

Kenneth Payne, a professor of strategy, pitted OpenAI’s GPT-5.2, Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4, and Google’s Gemini 3 Flash against each other in 21 war games involving border disputes, competition for resources, and threats to regime survival. The models generated roughly 780,000 words explaining their decisions across 329 turns.

In 95% of games, at least one model employed tactical nuclear weapons against military targets. Strategic nuclear threats – demanding surrender under threat of attacks on cities – occurred in 76% of games. US deploys fighter jets to Israel – media

Washington has reportedly sent a dozen F-22 stealth fighters to the Middle East amid rising tensions with Iran (that Israel caused)

The US has deployed a squadron of advanced F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jets to an Israeli Air Force base in the country’s south, multiple media outlets claimed on Tuesday, citing US officials and flight tracking data. The reported move comes as part of a major US military buildup in the Middle East amid escalating tensions with Iran.

Twelve F-22s were seen taking off from Royal Air Force Lakenheath in England on Tuesday, according to videos and photos published by plane spotters and verified by the New York Times.

A US official confirmed to the Times of Israel and NYT that the fighters were being sent to Israel and that some had already arrived. The deployment marks the first known operational movement of F-22s to the region amid the ongoing standoff with Tehran.

Retired US Air Force Lieutenant General David Deptula described the move as significant, telling NYT it “indicates preparation for a more aggressive stance toward Iran and potential cooperation with Israel in an attack. It signals that the US is serious about attacking if Iran does not agree to US terms.”

Last week, US President Donald Trump gave Iran a ten to 15-day ultimatum to reach an agreement on dismantling its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, warning that “really bad things” will happen if it does not comply.

Washington has already deployed two aircraft carrier strike groups to the Middle East. Multiple media outlets report that US plans for possible strikes are at an advanced stage, with options including targeting individual leaders and pursuing regime change.

Tehran has signaled it prefers a diplomatic path and is preparing a draft proposal for new negotiations, according to Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

However, an Iranian defense source warned in a statement to RT that any attack would be deemed a “full-scale war” and would be met with a “broad and unlimited response.”

Russia has urged a peaceful settlement, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warning that strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites could cause a nuclear disaster.

The US previously struck Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025 during Israel’s 12-day air campaign against the country.

NASA’s Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel Releases 2025 Annual Report

The Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP), which advises NASA and Congress on safety, has released its 2025 annual report on NASA’s performance and challenges.

While the panel acknowledged NASA’s safety achievements, it warned that the agency’s biggest challenges stem from interconnected factors – workforce, acquisition, technical authority, budgets, and the growing complexity of human spaceflight – requiring sustained attention as missions become more ambitious.

“Independent assessments like this will make NASA better,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.

“The panel’s report underscores areas where we must raise the bar, from how we structure oversight and manage integrated risk to how we declare and learn from anomalies.

We are wholly committed to transparency. That’s how we protect crews, earn trust, and keep the Artemis lunar campaign and our transition to a commercial presence in low Earth orbit on a safe, sustainable path.”

This year’s report focused on the following topics:

strategic vision and governance

Moon to Mars program

future U.S. presence in low Earth orbit

health and medical risks in human spaceflight

NASA’s X-59 Low-Boom Flight Demonstrator

The panel noted progress on Artemis II readiness and improved oversight through the Moon to Mars Program Office, as well as safe International Space Station operations, advances in astronaut health research, and the first flight of the X-59 Low-Boom Demonstrator.

At the same time, it flagged significant challenges, including Artemis III’s high-risk posture, lessons from Boeing’s Starliner test, space station deorbit planning, and systemic concerns.

To respond to these new challenges, the panel recommends NASA:

Realign its governance of acquisition strategies for human spaceflight-related capabilities agencywide.

Re-examine the mission objectives and system architecture for Artemis III and subsequent missions to establish a more balanced approach to risk.

Require timely declaration of mishap or high-visibility close call.

“We were already on the path to implementing change and this report only adds more urgency,” added Isaacman.

“That means recalibrating our acquisition strategy — including a build versus buy versus service procurement approach — restoring core competencies through initiatives like converting contractors to civil servant roles and increasing our launch cadence.

We’re also aligning our long-term vision for the agency and industry to guide priorities. This includes clarifying our plans for the Artemis architecture moving forward and accelerating proposals for human landing systems to preserve schedule margin.

We’ve already shown what transparency and now accountability looks like — through the Boeing Starliner Program Investigation Team report, we owned our mistakes, classified the mission as a Type A mishap, and launched corrective actions to ensure they never happen again.

These steps, along with addressing health and medical risk documentation and overhauling and accelerating programs like X-59, reflect our commitment to live up to the expectations of the world’s most accomplished space agency.”

On Feb. 19, Isaacman held a news conference to present the agency’s findings from the Starliner Crewed Flight Test. Earlier this month, he outlined a new workforce plan to strengthen NASA’s core competencies in technical, engineering, and operational excellence.

The agency also is working with both its human landing system industry providers to streamline and accelerate America’s return to the surface of the Moon by 2028.

“The panel commends NASA for its impressive efforts in 2025 to strategically enhance the agency’s risk management posture despite turbulence in the agency’s organizational environment,” said retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Susan J. Helms, chair of ASAP.

“We very sincerely thank NASA’s leaders and workforce for their passionate dedication to space exploration and their unwavering commitment to the safe pursuit of the nation’s lofty aims to the great benefit of the future of humanity.”

The annual report is based on the panel’s 2025 fact-finding and quarterly public meetings; direct observations of NASA operations and decision-making; discussions with NASA management, employees, and contractors; and the panel members’ experiences.

Congress established the panel in 1968 to provide advice and make recommendations to the NASA administrator on safety matters after the 1967 Apollo 1 fire claimed the lives of three American astronauts.
