Senate Funding Deal Collapses, Saturday Shutdown Looms.

The U.S. government is on the verge of a partial shutdown after the Senate’s planned vote on a funding deal stalled late Thursday. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and other Republican leaders had aimed to push the deal forward, but it faced opposition within their own ranks over what Republican senators characterize as leadership caving to Democrats on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) confirmed he placed a hold on the funding package, effectively blocking it from quick consideration. Graham expressed his dissatisfaction with the deal, stating, “This is a bad deal,” as he entered Thune’s office late Thursday evening.

Late Thursday, just before the Senate attempted to move the Democrat-backed funding deal, President Donald J. Trump pushed for lawmakers to vote for the appropriations package. “America is setting Records in every way, and our Growth Numbers are among the best ever. The only thing that can slow our Country down is another long and damaging Government Shutdown,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, continuing, “Republicans and Democrats in Congress have come together to get the vast majority of the Government funded until September, while at the same time providing an extension to the Department of Homeland Security (including the very important Coast Guard, which we are expanding and rebuilding like never before). Hopefully, both Republicans and Democrats will give a very much needed Bipartisan ‘YES’ Vote.”

It is believed that Sen. Graham‘s hold specifically stems from a provision passed by the House that removed legislative language allowing senators to sue for up to $500,000 if their phone records were obtained by former special counsel Jack Smith during the former Biden government’s Arctic Frost scandal.

Without a funding agreement, a partial shutdown of federal operations is set to begin at 12:01 AM ET on Saturday. Even if the Senate reaches an agreement on Friday, the House of Representatives is not scheduled to return until Monday, though Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has indicated he may be able to bring the House into session late Sunday if necessary.A number of conservative members of the Senate have expressed opposition to the DHS funding deal, arguing it surrenders leverage and will likely result in a number of Democrat policy victories that could effectively gut U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)—including a requirement for agents to obtain a judicial warrant rather than an administrative warrant in order to arrest migrants with outstanding removal orders.

John Sopotiuk

Peacefully while watching his favourite TV show Star Trek, John (Spaceman Johnny) passed away on April 8, 2017 at the Personal Care Home in Lac du Bonnet at the age of 88. John was born in Brule, ON.

Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Betty Quinn of Keewatin, ON, brother Pete Sopotiuk of Sooke, BC, half-sister Helen Bak of Winnipeg, MB and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Steven and Maria Sopotiuk, his brothers Bill and Joe, and his sister Anne.

From Barvis, while growing up, John moved with his family to a few places in Manitoba and Ontario. They then ended up in Lac du Bonnet where his Dad continued working for the CP Rail. John became a carpenter and worked in different places, including Manitouwadge & Pine Falls. He returned to Lac du Bonnet and has been there for the rest of his years.

He enjoyed Star Trek shows (a Trekkie) and loved going to his favourite blueberry patches to pick blueberries. He was interested in prospecting, mining and the universe. He was well known for his artistic creations of outer space, UFO’s and nature.

Never forgotten John/Uncle John. You are now in outer space, where you have always dreamed of being. The family would like to thank the Personal Care Home in Lac du Bonnet for their care of John. A special thanks from the family to Ruth and Ed Owsiak, Jocelyn Davidson, Sandra Grouette and Darlene Augustine who took great care of John on a regular basis.

As per John’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held.

Trump says he’s given Iran deadline to accept deal before potential strike

US President Donald Trump says he has given Iran a deadline to make a deal, as Washington moves significant military assets to the region ahead of a potential strike on the Islamic Republic.

Asked by reporters in the Oval Office if he’s given a deadline to Iran before a potential strike, Trump confirms that he has communicated one directly to Tehran, adding, “Only they know for sure.”

He doesn’t reveal the timing of that deadline.

Asked if there’s a timeline for when the US forces in the region might pull back, Trump is noncommittal. “They have to float someplace. They might as well float near Iran.”

Apple buys secretive Israeli AI company Q.ai for $1.6 billion in biggest acquisition of its history

With the move, Apple aims to improve its access to AI technology, which has suffered recent setbacks, especially after several delays in deploying Apple Intelligence's full announced capabilities.

Apple acquired the Israeli AI start-up Q.ai in a deal reportedly worth $1.6 billion, making it the biggest acquisition in Apple’s history, according to reports by The Financial Times and Reuters on Thursday.

Q.ai was described by The FT as a “secretive Israeli start-up” that developed a technology capable of analyzing the “silent speech” made in facial expressions.

According to the report, people familiar with the matter said the deal would value the Israeli start-up at nearly $2 billion.

With the move, Apple aims to improve its access to AI technology, which has suffered recent setbacks, especially after several delays in deploying Apple Intelligence's full announced capabilities.

“Q.ai is a remarkable company that is pioneering new and creative ways to use imaging and machine learning,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice-president of hardware technologies, to The Financial Times.

“Q.ai has operated in stealth since its inception, hard at work collapsing the gap between human intent and digital execution,” wrote Tom Hulme, one of the heads at GV (formerly Google Ventures and one of the seed investors of Q.ai), in a blog post.

According to Hulme, Q.ai’s CEO, Aviad Maizels, has the unique distinction of having two of his companies sold to Apple: PrimeSense, the tech behind Kinect, which Apple acquired in November 2013.

The current technology developed by Q.ai is used in intelligent headphones and glasses to detect “facial micro movements,” allowing users to control the devices without performing excessive actions.

"Joining Apple opens extraordinary possibilities for pushing boundaries and realizing the full potential of what we’ve created, and we’re thrilled to bring these experiences to people everywhere,” Maizels said in a statement to Reuters.

Apple falls behind in AI race

On January 13, Apple announced a deal with Alphabet (Google's parent company) to integrate its Gemini AI system into Apple Intelligence software.

According to a Reuters report, Apple aims to improve its AI systems across its devices with this deal, while Google continues to expand the reach of its AI motors, which are already used to power most of Samsung’s “Galaxy AI.”

Seven Funders Supporting Minneapolis — And How to Find Nonprofits to Back

Government agencies in the United States have a long history of committing lethal violence against racial minorities and the white individuals who support them. During the 1960s, local police departments throughout the country used violence to attack and undermine the civil rights movement — including by spraying 1,000 rounds of live ammunition into a single Texas Southern University dorm room. Unlike in the civil rights era, though, today, the federal government is perpetrating the worst violence.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) may be a Johnny-come-lately in the world of law enforcement, but its agents joined the deadly violence party well before the current destructive occupation of Minneapolis and other areas. According to a 2024 collaborative report conducted by The Trace, in partnership with Business Insider and Type Media Center’s investigations project, ICE agents were responsible for 59 shootings, 23 of them fatal, from 2015 to 2021.

Even accounting for this country’s difficult history, the widespread, highly documented federal government brutality taking place in Minneapolis today is virtually unprecedented. The response by everyday citizens, nonprofits and philanthropic donors may prove to be unprecedented as well.

One neighborhood organizer who spoke with Mother Jones earlier this month estimated that “tens of thousands” of everyday Minnesotans are participating in patrols of their schools, blocks and neighborhoods, with 12,000 Minneapolis residents working on neighborhood rapid-response efforts alone. The Atlantic recently agreed with that estimate, reporting that “at the very least,” tens of thousands of Minnesotans “are risking their safety to defend their neighbors and their freedom.”

Where the people have gone, the money has followed. Companies including Target and General Mills have provided $3.5 million in grants to support small businesses affected by the occupation, though Target is still a focus of protestors’ ire after rolling back its DEI initiatives last year in the face of the Trump administration’s threats. The funds will be distributed by the Minneapolis Foundation.

Individual Americans are also being generous. A GoFundMe campaign for ICE shooting victim Alex Pretti’s next of kin has already topped $1.6 million. On Jan. 23, Newsweek reported that a fundraiser for Liam Ramos, the five-year-old child whom ICE agents are accused of using as bait to entrap the child’s mother had raised more than $200,000; that figure has since broken the $300,000 mark. An informal group calling itself Safe Haven MN began greeting detainees on release from the Whipple Federal Building, providing them with phones, rides and jackets against the bitter cold. The group got its start the week of Jan. 12; its GoFundMe has already raised $420,000.

Institutional philanthropy is also playing a role in the emerging picture. Minneapolis nonprofits serving the newfound targets of ICE on the ground are receiving money from at least two long-time legacy foundations, a major funding collaborative and smaller grantmakers. These funders are quickly moving money, or gearing up to do so, for a large swath of work, including legal services and other direct and indirect support for individuals and communities that have been targeted by ICE.

As mentioned above, the McKnight Foundation has created an online guide to help would-be donors of all kinds find Minneapolis nonprofits to support through this crisis. One of the directories flagged by McKnight, Stand With Minnesota, has compiled links to dozens of groups offering a virtual smorgasbord of efforts that could use funding, from rent relief and mutual aid funds to a diaper fund and pet and animal support “to rehome animals left behind after ICE abductions.”

The other resource directory flagged by McKnight is a feature by the Minnesota news site Sahan Journal, which provides a smaller, less-overwhelming list and also names local grocery stores providing free deliveries to customers who can’t leave their homes.

While the administration may choose to pivot at least partially away from its unchecked aggression in Minnesota in response to mounting political pressure, there’s no reason to believe President Trump’s unconstitutional norm-busting won’t continue, in the North Star State and elsewhere. The question is, what will the nation’s moderate and liberal foundations do about it — particularly given that so many of them have held back in the wake of threats against racial justice, LGBTQ communities and others targeted by the federal administration?

Perhaps the numerous videos of American citizens being shot, threatened and attacked on the streets of a major U.S. city by masked federal forces will prove to be the key that unlocks a few more of those endowments.

Israeli Planes Are Spraying Syrian Farms Near The Front With Mysterious Chemicals (Videos)

An Israeli agricultural aircraft sprayed multiple farms in the southern Syrian governorate of al-Qunitra with unknown chemicals on January 30, in the third such incident in recent days.

The state-run SANA news agency reported that the Israeli aircraft sprayed a wide area from the town of Jabata al-Khashab to the town of al-Hamidiyah, passing through the town of al-Hurriya in the northern countryside of al-Quneitra. Videos of the incident later surfaced online.

On January 27, a similar substance was sprayed by Israeli aircraft over farms west of the town of Mazrat Abu Madhra and the town of al-Hanout in the southern Quneitra countryside. Two days prior, the forested areas, farms, and pastures in the towns of al-Ashah, Koudna, al-Asbah, and al-Rafid, also in the governorate southern countryside, were sprayed.

The Agriculture and Environment Directorates in Quneitra took samples from these farms for testing, according to the SANA.

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Alabi also brought up the issue during a Security Council session on January 29.

“In the last few days, Israeli occupation aircraft have repeatedly sprayed unknown chemical substances on Syrian lands and forests. The question here is, are the occupation’s alleged security concerns about trees, pastures, and livestock? Doesn’t the occupation know that the dignity and livelihood of the Syrian people are no less important than their lives?” he said.

The Israeli military invaded the buffer zone adjacent to the occupied Golan Heights in al-Qunitra right after the fall of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad, and has since established a series of posts there, including atop of the strategic Mount Hermon.

The military has been also conducting operations in al-Qunitra, the neighboring governorates of Daraa and Rif Dimashq on a regular basis.

The chemicals being spread along the buffer zone are likely herbicides meant to prevent the growth of pushes that could obstacle surveillance.

The Israel military used the exact same tactic around Gaza before, with Palestinian media reporting long lasting damage to farms and scores of casualties.

Syria’s Islamist-led transitional government has been engaged in direct talks with Israel for around a year now. Recent reports indicate progress, with the Middle East Eye even saying that the United States is pressing both sides to sign a security agreement by March. Many issues are still stuck, however, as Syria wants the buffer zone back, and Israel is refusing to abound Mount Hermon.

Israel will not likely compromise. Its military is clearly planning for long term deployment in the buffer zone, as evidenced by its recent environmental control activities.

Sitting Judge and Three Others Charged with Scheme to Steal Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars from Vulnerable and Incapacitated Wards

DETROIT - Four Detroit-area residents, including a sitting judge and a local attorney, were charged for their roles in a years-long scheme to embezzle money from incapacitated individuals, United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr. announced today.

Gorgon was joined in the announcement by Jennifer Runyan, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Detroit Field Office, and Karen Wingerd, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigations Detroit Field Office.

Nancy Williams, 59, Avery Bradley, 72, Andrea Bradley-Baskin, 46, and Dwight Rashad, 69, all Detroit residents, were charged via indictment with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The indictment also charges Bradley with one count of wire fraud, Bradley, Bradley-Baskin, and Rashad with several counts of money laundering, and Bradley-Baskin with a single count of making a false statement to federal law enforcement agent.

According to the indictment, probate courts regularly appoint guardians and conservators to manage the personal and financial affairs of adults, known as wards, who have been found by the court to lack the capacity to do so themselves. Guardians and conservators are fiduciaries who are obligated to act in the best interests of their wards. The indictment alleges that Nancy Williams owned Guardian and Associates, an agency that was appointed as a fiduciary by the Wayne County Probate Court for incapacitated wards in over 1,000 cases. Avery Bradley is an attorney, who, along with his daughter (and fellow attorney) Andrea Bradley-Baskin, operated a law firm that often represented Guardian and Associates in Wayne County Probate Court and otherwise practiced regularly in that court. Bradley-Baskin is currently a district judge on Michigan’s 36th District Court. Dwight Rashad operated a series of group homes and residential facilities for elderly individuals, including wards, who needed support and care.

Third Georgia State Representative charged with pandemic unemployment fraud

ATLANTA - Dexter L. Sharper, a member of the Georgia House of Representatives, was charged today with making false statements to fraudulently obtain thousands of dollars of emergency pandemic unemployment assistance payments.

“While many of his constituents and fellow citizens were losing jobs and desperately needed unemployment assistance during the pandemic, Representative Sharper allegedly pretended to be out of work to collect a share of unemployment benefits for himself,” said U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg. “When government officials lie to take money, and do it while holding an elected office, it violates the trust of citizens and weakens faith in our elected government.”

“These charges point to some disgraceful conduct at the highest level, which should shock and repulse every citizen”, said Georgia State Inspector General Nigel Lange. “The alleged activities describe a disgusting abuse by an elected official who appeared to trade his integrity for money destined for those in need. Shameful.”

“Dexter L. Sharper, while serving as an elected member of the Georgia House of Representatives, is alleged to have unlawfully enriched himself by improperly obtaining taxpayer funds from the unemployment insurance program intended to assist American workers who lost their jobs through no fault of their own,” said Anthony P. D’Esposito, Inspector General, U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General. “These charges reflect allegations, and the case will be resolved through the judicial process. We will continue our efforts to investigate and pursue accountability for those who are charged with defrauding taxpayers by exploiting Department of Labor programs.”

“Nobody is above the law, including elected officials,” said FBI Atlanta Acting Special Agent in Charge Peter Ellis. “Those who violate the public trust and steal from taxpayers to fill their own pockets will be held accountable.”

According to U.S. Attorney Hertzberg, the charges, and other information presented in court: In 2020, in response to the forced closures of businesses and unprecedented economic hardship resulting from the COVID-19 emergency, the U.S. Congress created special unemployment compensation programs to provide cash assistance to individuals who lost their jobs due to the pandemic. Applicants had to provide a certification for every week for which they wished to claim benefits, attesting to whether they were actively seeking work for the week and the reason they were unemployed.

Sharper, while serving as the Georgia State Representative for District 177, which includes portions of Lowndes County, allegedly applied for unemployment assistance benefits for April 2020 through May 2021. In his initial application, he stated that he had only one employer, Dexter Sharper Party Rental, which had employed him for 40 hours per week for over seven years, but had not worked since March 13, 2020. Then, in 38 separate weekly certifications, he stated that had not worked or earned any wages, was actively looking for work, and had not refused any work.

According to court filings, Leonardo Ayala, 25, of Homestead, Florida, accepted bribes and exploited his position as a bank employee to help launder drug money to Colombia. From June to Nov. 2023, Ayala opened fraudulent accounts, issued over 150 debit cards to shell companies, and unblocked debit cards that TD Bank had restricted due to questionable activity. The bank accounts and debit cards were then used to make more than 12,000 ATM withdrawals in Colombia, funneling approximately $5.5 million out of the United States. In exchange, Ayala received more than $6,000 in bribes paid in cash and through a peer-to-peer digital payment network.

Ayala pleaded guilty to a two-count information charging him with conspiring to launder monetary instruments and receipt of bribes by a bank employee. The charge of money laundering conspiracy carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. The charge of receipt of bribes by a bank employee carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison. Ayala’s sentencing has been set for June 11. A federal judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and Senior Counsel Philip Lamparello of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey made the announcement.

The DEA, IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) and FDIC-OIG are investigating the case. The department also thanks the Morristown Police Department for their assistance with the investigation.

Former Boston Children’s Hospital Anesthesiologist Sentenced to 22 Years in Prison for Child Exploitation Offenses

Defendant possessed child sexual abuse material of children as young as infants

BOSTON – A former pediatric cardiac anesthesiology fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital was sentenced yesterday to nearly two decades in prison for producing, possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Defendant was previously a fellow in pediatric anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

Christopher Sheerer, 37, of Boston, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Denise J. Casper to 22 years in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. Sheerer was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $65,722. An additional amount of restitution will be determined at a hearing scheduled for March 26, 2026. In September 2025, Sheerer pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography; one count of possession of child pornography; and one count of sexual exploitation of children. Sheerer was arrested and charged in July 2024 and has remained in federal custody since.

“Every time child sexual abuse material is created, shared, or viewed, children are revictimized again and again,” said United States Attorney Leah B. Foley. “Each case serves as a difficult reminder that child predators are embedded in our communities. This defendant did not just possess this heinous material – he produced it himself and shared it with others. Moreover, his chosen employment increased his direct contact with children. Today’s sentence reflects the devastating harm these crimes inflict on real children and sends a clear message that those who fuel this abuse will face severe consequences. Our office will continue to work tirelessly to protect children, pursue justice for victims and hold offenders fully accountable.”

“Sheerer is among the worst kind of criminal we investigate. He held a position of trust in the community, but behind closed doors he was a predator of the highest order, not only participating in online groups dedicated to the sharing of photos depicting the sexual abuse of children but also acting as a hands-on offender. Now, he’s facing over two decades behind bars,” said Special Agent in Charge Michael J. Krol of Homeland Security Investigations New England. “When our special agents go to work every day, they’re working toward making the world a safer place for children. We hope that today’s sentence does just that and brings a measure of security to the family of the child he victimized as they move forward and begin to heal.”

Sheerer was a fellow in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology at Boston Children’s Hospital at the time of his arrest and was previously a fellow in pediatric anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.

In May 2024, an investigation began into a user of an online, encrypted chat application who belonged to a group dedicated to the sharing of CSAM. The target user was subsequently identified as Sheerer, with an IP address tracing him to Johns Hopkins University. Sheerer uploaded imagery of a child known to him to gain admission to that group.

G7 weakened itself with sanctions on Russia – Putin aide

The restrictions have backfired given that 85% of Russian transactions now bypass Western currencies, Maksim Oreshkin has said

Attempts by Western countries to pressure Russia through financial sanctions have contributed to the decline of G7 currencies, the deputy head of the presidential administration, Maksim Oreshkin, has said.

Speaking at the opening of Expert Dialogues in Moscow on Friday, Oreshkin said the sanctions have weakened the economic standing of the countries imposing them.

“By imposing sanctions, the countries of the Group of Seven sought to make international trade impossible for Russia and to inflict damage on the Russian economy. But all they have achieved is a significant increase in the share of national currencies in settlements,” he noted.

According to Oreshkin, by the end of 2025, 85% of all transactions involving Russia were carried out without Western currencies.

In December, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said the use of national currencies in settlements among Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) members had reached 93%.He noted that an agreement signed earlier in 2025 allows companies in the member countries to list their securities on any stock exchange within the union.

Oreshkin’s comments follow awarning from Germany’s financial regulator, the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority,that the dollar’s status as the world’s primary reserve currency could be challenged this year, with the currency at risk from funding shortages, geopolitical shocks, and politicization. The warning came after the dollar suffered its steepest one-day drop in nearly a year on Tuesday, marking its sharpest decline since April when US President Donald Trump rolled out his sweeping global tariff plan.

Traders are betting on further dollar weakness amid uncertainty over US policy, with pessimism at its highest since May 2025, Bloomberg reported this week.Trump dismissed concerns, saying the currency is “doing great” and should “seek its own level.”

A weaker dollar can boost exporters and multinational profits but could raise import costs, fuel inflation, and weaken its global reserve role. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, however, defended Trump’s policies, saying they should eventually attract investment and support the greenback.
