The Liberal government has confirmed it has committed more than $3.3 billion in taxpayer funding to electric vehicle manufacturing projects in Canada, including tens of millions of dollars to companies that have since collapsed.

The disclosure appears in a written response to an Order Paper Question from Conservative MP Dalwinder Gill(Calgary McKnight).

According to the response from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, $3.386 billion has been committed since 2016, with $1.41 billion already disbursed through federal programs such as the Strategic Innovation Fund.

Among the recipients is Lion Electric, which has since entered bankruptcy protection. Ottawa committed $50 million to the company and has already paid out nearly $32 million to support a battery assembly plant and “centre of expertise” in Quebec.

Other heavily subsidized firms include:

Stellantis – $529 million committed, $222 million disbursed

NextStar Energy (LG–Stellantis battery plant) – $500 million committed, $491 million disbursed

General Motors – $259 million committed, $242 million disbursed

Honda Canada – $132 million committed, $90 million disbursed

Ford – $295 million committed, $34 million disbursed

PowerCo (Volkswagen) – $700 million committed, $4.5 million disbursed

Umicore – $551 million committed, $57 million disbursed

Most of the funding went to projects in Ontario and Quebec for vehicle assembly, battery plants and critical-minerals processing.

The Order Paper response shows that many of the contributions are non-repayable, meaning taxpayers will not recover the money if the projects fail. Some agreements include job-creation requirements, while others contain repayment provisions that are not publicly disclosed.

Several projects list no public production capacity, despite receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies.

The government says the spending is meant to support Canada’s transition to electric vehicles and build a domestic battery supply chain. Critics say the disclosures confirm Ottawa is gambling billions of public dollars on politically favoured corporations — and in at least one case, backing a company that has already gone bust.

The Order Paper response provides the clearest accounting yet of Ottawa’s EV manufacturing subsidies, highlighting both the scale of public spending and the financial risk now borne by taxpayers.

The Liberal government has disclosed that Mark Carney’s travel has already cost taxpayers at least $770,000, according to responses to an Order Paper Question, while refusing to reveal the total cost of flights or security.

In a written response to Parliament, Global Affairs Canada reported that $470,000 was spent on hotel accommodations related to Carney’s travel. The department refused to disclose which hotels were used, claiming that doing so could jeopardize security.

The response did not explain how identifying hotels already stayed in would pose a security risk.

A separate response from the Department of National Defence shows an additional $300,000 was spent on in-flight catering, with officials noting that further costs are still being processed and have not yet been fully tallied.

The government declined to disclose the cost of flights themselves, as well as the expense of security details associated with Carney’s travel.

Taken together, the partial disclosures confirm that Carney’s travel has already generated well over three-quarters of a million dollars in expenses, with the final total expected to be significantly higher once outstanding charges are included.

The Order Paper Question posed by Conservative MP Phil Lawrence sought a full accounting of Carney’s travel costs, including transportation, accommodations, catering and security. Instead, the government provided only selected line items while withholding the most.

This is not the first time Carney’s taste for high-end travel has been charged to the public purse.

In 2018, while serving as Governor of the Bank of England, Carney defended what The Guardian described as a “staggering” expenses bill after it was revealed he had racked up more than £300,000 in travel costs over two years. At the time, British lawmakers questioned business-class flights and international travel tied to elite global financial forums, with Carney arguing the spending was justified by the Bank’s international role.

By withholding flight and security expenses, the government has made it impossible for Parliament to determine the true price tag of his international schedule.

What the Order Paper response makes clear is that Ottawa is willing to release some numbers, just not the ones needed to calculate the full bill.

So far, taxpayers are on the hook for at least $770,000. And the meter is still running.

A Conservative MP sounded the alarm that Liberals might be flip-flopping on a promise not to ban Elon Musk’s X social media platform after Canada’s Artificial Intelligence Minister said the government is now “investigating” it yet again.

Speaking to reporters last Friday, Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon told reporters that the “Privacy Commissioner has started an investigation into X.”

“And again, there was already an investigation before, but he’s added an investigation.”

Conservative MP Dean Allison warned in a post on X last Friday regarding Solomon’s X comments that the Liberal minister’s tone is “lingo” for his true intentions to ban the social media platform.

“A week ago, I said the Liberals will ban @X. They denied it,” he wrote.

“Now they’re back to ‘investigating it’ which is government lingo for ‘give us enough time for the story to die down, then we’ll ban it.’ Liberals censor speech. Conservatives support free speech. Simple as that, folks.”

Reports surfaced earlier this month that Australia and the United Kingdom were looking to ban X. Because of this, Canada’s federal government denied rumors that it would follow suit with a ban of its own of the popular platform.

Solomon himself said at the time, “Contrary to media reports, Canada is not considering a ban of X.”

Recent reports suggest that the UK government was putting together a consortium of nations that would band together and ban Musk’s X as a measure to challenge its AI tool known as Grok.

Claims have been made that Grok has been used to generate sexually explicit images of minors that have been posted on X. Musk himself has addressed the issue, noting, “Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content.”

Ottawa and New Delhi agreed to expand trade in hydrocarbons as Energy Minister Tim Hodgson visited India.

The two countries issued a joint statement on Jan. 27 highlighting potential areas of cooperation. The statement says that Canada’s priority to diversify its energy exports, coupled with India being a top consumer of oil and gas, “offers a natural and symbiotic partnership grounded in scale, stability, and long-term opportunity.”

Hodgson and Indian Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri have agreed to deepen bilateral energy trade, with Canada supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and crude oil. Meanwhile India, having the fourth largest refining capacity in the world, could supply refined oil products to Canada. The statement adds that Hodgson and his counterpart recognize the “importance of climate-related objectives.”

Hodgson, a former public utility executive, became energy minister after the April 2025 election and has since relayed elevated interest in Canadian energy during his travels abroad.

The joint statement with India on energy is part of the rapprochement between Ottawa and New Delhi that began after Prime Minister Mark Carney took office. The statement notes the meeting between Hodgson and Singh Puri follows the direction provided by Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when they met at the G7 Summit in Alberta in June 2025.

Canada’s fertility rate has reached an all-time low of 1.25 births per woman in 2024, with Statistics Canada saying this puts the country in “ultra-low fertility” territory.

The statistics agency said in a Jan. 26 report that this declining fertility is due to a decreased birth rate, as well as more women not having children “by choice, by circumstance or because they are delaying motherhood.”

Statistics Canada said the country’s fertility has been decreasing since 2009, although it fell by a smaller 1.6 percent in 2024 compared to a 5.3 percent decline in 2023 and 6.9 percent decline in 2022.

The agency said Canada entered the “ultra-low fertility” group of countries, which have Total Fertility Rates (TFRs) below 1.30, in 2023. Other countries in the category include Switzerland (1.29), Finland (1.25), Italy (1.18), Japan (1.15), and South Korea (0.75).

By contrast, the World Bank said that in 2023, the countries with the highest fertility were the African countries of Somalia, Chad, Niger, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which had TFRs of 6.1.

Statistics Canada said the average age of mothers at the birth of their first child has also been rising in Canada for decades, and in 2024 it reached an all-time high of 31.7 years. Continue…

Police in London, Ont., have charged four people after finding hazardous chemicals capable of making an explosive device in a home near Western University’s campus.

London Police Service said they were responding to a trespassing call from the university, which led to a discovery of the chemicals in a home in the University Heights neighbourhood, west of campus.

Police responded to the university on Jan. 24 around 1:40 a.m. after a special constable at the university arrested a suspected trespasser following a foot chase. Officers located a loaded handgun at the scene, according to London police.

Police determined that a second man had also been involved in the trespassing incident, and the investigation led them to a home near Chesham Avenue and Chesham Place. Officers found hazardous chemicals that were capable of being used to create explosives.

Two more individuals were arrested at the home, and technicians with the explosives disposal unit assessed the scene.

Police said the home has been under police guard since the incident and members of the public have been asked to avoid the area. The London police service said that its Major Crime Scene team is investigating. Continue…

The deal, announced Monday by far-left Podemos and the Socialist government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, represents one of the most sweeping amnesties in modern Spanish history, La Gaceta reports.

According to party sources and reports from Cadena SER, the measure will be approved by royal decree at Tuesday’s Council of Ministers. It bypasses ordinary parliamentary scrutiny and fast-tracks a policy that will undoubtedly have catastrophic, long-term demographic, economic, and security consequences.

Under the plan, illegal immigrants who can demonstrate as little as five months of residence in Spain will be eligible for legal status. The regularization applies regardless of how they entered the country or whether they previously violated immigration or labor laws.

The cutoff date for eligibility is December 31, 2025, meaning anyone already residing illegally in Spain before that date may qualify. Government estimates suggest more than half a million people could benefit, making this not an isolated humanitarian measure but a structural transformation of Spain’s migration policy.

Once an application is filed, existing expulsion orders for administrative violations or unauthorized work will be automatically suspended. Speaking during her daily press conference on Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum did not deny earlier reports about the canceled Pemex shipment, which was originally scheduled for sometime in January.

"It is a sovereign decision, and it is made at the time deemed necessary," she said when asked about the reports, stressing that such shipments are determined by the state oil firm.

A private plane carrying a deputy chief minister crashed in an open field in western India on Wednesday, killing the official and four other people on board, aviation authorities said. There were no survivors.

The aircraft was en route from India´s financial capital of Mumbai to Ajit Pawar’s home city Baramati when it crash-landed and burst into flames some 254 kilometers (159 miles) from Mumbai. The reason for the crash was not immediately known. Television footage showed smoke rising from the wreckage.

Pawar, 66, was the deputy chief minister of India´s western Maharashtra state. He was traveling to Baramati to campaign in a local election when the privately-operated aircraft went down.

Two of his staffs and two crew members on board the mid-size Learjet 45 also died, the directorate general of civil aviation said in an initial statement.

Pawar was a key figure in state politics and served as the second highest elected official in Maharashtra as part of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi´s ruling coalition in the state. He wielded considerable influence in the the state’s sugar belt and was known for his ability to mobilize rural voters.

Modi expressed his condolences, calling Pawar a committed public servant.

“His understanding of administrative matters and passion for empowering the poor and downtrodden were also noteworthy,” Modi said on X. “His untimely demise is very shocking and saddening. Condolences to his family and countless admirers.”

European Union Opens Borders to Mass India Migration with ‘Mother of All Deals’

Dramatic video footage has captured the moment a NASA research plane was forced to make a fiery emergency ‘belly landing’ at a Texas airport on Tuesday after suffering a technical problem.

Footage shared on social media shows flames billowing from the bottom of the WB-57 jet as it skidded along the runway with its landing gear not deployed.

NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens confirmed the incident in a statement released shortly after the landing.

“Today, a mechanical issue with one of NASA’s WB-57s resulted in a gear-up landing at Ellington Field,” Stevens said in a post on X, stressing that all crew members are safe. Continue…

The SJ-100 is a twin-engine, narrow-body Russian regional passenger aircraft already in commercial service, with more than 200 units operating across 16 airlines worldwide.

The federal government is still sitting on 64 million expired pieces of personal protective equipment purchased during the COVID-19 pandemic — at a cost of more than $150 million, according to a newly released parliamentary response.

The disclosure came in an answer to an Order Paper Question from Conservative MP Dave Epp (Chatham-Kent—Leamington), tabled in the House of Commons on January 26.

The Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed the expired stock includes:

30.1 million gloves

19 million surgical masks

8.6 million gowns

3.8 million shoe covers

2.4 million face shields

98,000 N95 respirators

All of the expired PPE was originally bought between 2020 and 2022 at a total cost of approximately $150.7 million.

Ottawa is also spending millions to store this unusable equipment. Since 2022, the federal government has paid over $20 million in storage costs for PPE destined for recycling or disposal.

The largest share went to private contractor Metro Supply Chain, which received:

$3.7 million in 2022

$7.65 million in 2023

$4.1 million in 2024

$3.98 million in 2025

The government confirmed that most of the expired PPE is stored in warehouses in Ontario and Alberta.

The response also revealed which companies received contracts under the government’s failed 2019-20 standing offer for PPE, including Bio Nuclear Diagnostics, Cardinal Health Canada, Ferno Canada, and Medline Canada, with contract values ranging from tens of thousands to over $700,000.

While Ottawa insists it “actively divests” surplus equipment, it admits once PPE expires it has “no remaining value” and must be recycled or destroyed.

The federal government spent more than $30 million on vehicles for a two-day G7 summit in Alberta — and over 100 of those vehicles are now parked in storage, according to a parliamentary response released this week.

The figures were disclosed in an Order Paper Question from Conservative MP Blaine Calkins (Ponoka—Didsbury) about the G7 summit held in Kananaskis, Alberta, on June 16–17, 2025.

Public Safety Canada confirmed the RCMP purchased 315 vehicles and leased 648 more specifically for the summit.

The purchased fleet included Chevrolet Suburbans, light-armoured Suburbans, Ford Transit 350 mid-roof vans and Chrysler Pacificas. The government refused to list the makes and models of the leased vehicles, claiming it would take too long to compile the information.

The cost was steep:

$27,446,457 for purchased vehicles

$2,972,987.58 for leased vehicles

That’s more than $30.4 million in total for transportation at a summit that lasted just two days.

After the event, the RCMP admitted 113 of the newly purchased vehicles were put into storage instead of being deployed operationally. The vehicles are currently being kept at the RCMP Service Dog Training Facility in Innisfail, Alberta, along the Queen Elizabeth II Highway.

RCMP officials said the light-armoured Suburbans were reallocated internally, while leased vehicles were simply returned to the leasing company. They also refused to disclose per-vehicle pricing, citing third-party commercial sensitivity.

The disclosure comes as the federal government continues to lecture Canadians about climate change and the need to reduce emissions — while buying and leasing nearly 1,000 new vehicles for a short international photo-op.

Critics say the response highlights a familiar Ottawa pattern: massive spending for elite political events, followed by quiet storage of the equipment once the cameras leave.

Polytechnique Montreal, the University of Montreal's engineering school, in an effort reduce its carbon footprint — has chosen to halt the sale of beef for students to purchase.

Reported by CityNews, Patrick Cigana, the director of Polytechnique’s office of sustainable development, claims beef used to account for more than half of the cafeteria's greenhouse gas emissions.

The food professor, Sylvain Charlebois, who runs an agri-food analytics lab at Dalhousie University, wrote on X the school's decision makes it the first university in North America to stop serving beef to students.

Cigana cited research from the University of Oxford platform, saying beef produces ten times the carbon emissions of chicken.

A commenter on Charlebois' post, Michael Penkiunas wrote, "Bold Move."

Charlebois then responded with another possible reason the school may have made the decision, writing, "You mean, convenient move."

"Beef is expensive. Good way to bring down costs."

Earthquakes Canada confirmed the seismic activity took place before 11 p.m. on Tuesday. The earthquake is set to have hit Ramara, located east of Orillia. Although varying in intensity, the tremors were reportedly felt in Toronto, Hamilton, Belleville, Kingston and Ottawa and are said to have impacted 2,300 residents, The Weather Network reports.

The earthquake was “lightly felt” and as result there were no reports of damage and “none would be expected,” according to Earthquakes Canada.

A new bombshell report in Financial Times says that US officials have held recent talks with Canadian separatists seeking to break Alberta, Canada's oil-rich western province, away from Ottawa.

"Officials in the [US President] Donald Trump administration discussed loaning Alberta $500 million to break up Canada and make it the 51st state," one source told the FT.

This follows on the heels of Trump earlier this month posting a fictitious map showing Canada as part of the United States. The report also comes days after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's speech in Davos before the World Economic Forum (WEF). He called out President Trump for creating a "rupture" in the existing world order.

Carney has also told his parliament, "The world has changed. Washington has changed. There is almost nothing normal in the US now - that's the truth."

Trump famously fired back: "Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements" while adding that Carney "wasn't so grateful" and that Canada "gets a lot of freebies from us."

Recall too the words of US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent at Davos: "Alberta is a natural partner for the US. People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got."

And now the FT article, along with other media, claim Trump is destabilizing Canada by these secret meetings between the Canadian separatists and "very, very senior" officials in the US administration.

Jeff Rath, legal adviser to the movement in question - the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) - has gone so far as to proclaim that Washington is pushing for an "independent" Alberta.

APP leaders are now seeking follow-up meetings with the US State and Treasury Departments next month to request a $500 million credit facility to bankroll secession, while also pressing for US recognition and new pipeline routes that would bypass Canadian federal approval, according to the reports. They are said to be 'taking advantage' of the ongoing friction between the US and its northern neighbor.

Sources briefed on the discussions told the Financial Times that representatives from the province, where it turns out Carney himself was raised, have met with US State Department officials in Washington on no less than three separate occasions over the past nine months.

Per The Daily Beast, a State Department spokesperson has admitted that the meetings took place but suggested nothing has been agreed to, stressing that "no commitments were made."

That same report cites Carlo Dade from the Canada West Foundation, a Calgary think tank, who described: "The Americans are more than happy to continue to play Canadians off each other."

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) have officially submitted to Interpol the documents aimed at launching the international arrest of both Mindics and Zuckerman. The announcement was made by Oleksandr Klimenko, head of SAPO, wrote Ukrainian outlet Strana Today.

Mindics is currently in Israel, which he reportedly fled to an hour before anti-corruption officers raided his apartment, leading to suspicion someone in the government tipped him off that the raid was coming.

He is being tried in absentia for corruption crimes in the energy sector. The entrepreneur, who has a long history with Zelensky and played a key role in his rise to power, previously claimed that he was scapegoated in the scandal, while Zuckerman also denies the allegations.

The British Home Secretary unveiled plans in Parliament on Jan. 26 for a new National Police Service (NPS), which is modeled on the FBI and will take over the fight against terrorism and organized crime in the United Kingdom.

At the weekend, Shabana Mahmood described the NPS as a “British FBI” and said it would alleviate the burden on local police forces, allowing them to concentrate on issues such as shoplifting and street robbery.

The NPS will replace the National Crime Agency, which covers England and Wales, but it will also have a UK-wide role.

On Monday, the Home Office published a 106-page White Paper that sets out in detail the new police structure and how it would be supported by state-of-the-art technology.

The document says the government would invest 115 million pounds ($157 million) over the next three years “to enable the rapid and responsible adoption of AI and automation technologies by the police.”

A new National Centre for AI in Policing, known as Police.AI, would be created.

There are also plans to roll out facial recognition cameras nationwide to help police catch wanted criminals on watchlists.

The number of facial recognition camera vehicles would be increased from 10 to 50.

“A hundred years ago, fingerprinting was decried as curtailing our civil liberties, but today we could not imagine policing without it,” Mahmood said.

GM CEO Warns Of 'Very Slippery Slope' As Canada To Import Cheap Chinese EVs

Shortly before Davos, Canada and China announced a 5-point 'strategic partnership' which includes slashing tariffs on Chinese EVs from 100% to 6.1% for the first 49,000 units, in exchange for China cutting tariffs on Canadian canola from 85% to 15% until at least the end of the year.

After Donald Trump stomped his feet and threatened to slap a 100% tariff on Canadian exports, PM Mark Carney assured the US that the deal with China was simply 'rectifying' some 'issues' that developed over the last several years.

Yet, the reduced EV tariffs remain…

In response, General Motors CEO Mary Barra told employees at an all-hands meeting that the EV deal is a risk to North American auto manufacturing, WSJ reports.

"I can’t explain why the decision was made in Canada," Barra told employees, warning "It becomes a very slippery slope," and noting that Chinese automakers benefit in China from high tariffs imposed on importers, plus technology restrictions that prevent other companies from entering their market.

Under the agreement between China and Canada, at least half of the EVs imported would be required to have a price of $35,000 Canadian dollars (US$26,000), according to Carney's office. Canada will also work with Chinese automakers to ensure timely vehicle certifications, and that they meet the country's motor-vehicle safety standards.

Canada, meanwhile, is a major market for Detroit automakers. In 2025, Ford, GM and Jeep owner Stellantis sold over 700,000 vehicles combined in Canada. One factor which makes this easy is that Canada's emissions standards closely mirror those of the US.

That said, Canada's auto industry has been burnt, badly by Trump's tariffs on vehicles and parts made there, causing US automakers to scale back manufacturing as a result. Last year GM made the decision to stop making slow-selling electric vans at an Ingersoll, Ontario factory, while Stellantis has canceled plans to build the electric Jeep Compass in Ontario - and will instead make them in Illinois.

Chinese automakers, meanwhile, have been rapidly gaining global market share in recent years, but continue to be effectively barred from entering the massive US car market due to triple-digit tariffs on Chinese vehicle imports. Meanwhile, they're making roughly 25% of new Chinese cars in Mexico.

China’s state-run Global Times on Wednesday was delighted by the tiff between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, urging Carney to prove his mettle by doubling down on the anti-American comments that Bessent claimed he had retracted.

Carney gave a speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, last week in which he decried the end of the “rules-based international order.” He suggested President Donald Trump’s tariffs and foreign policy decisions destroyed that order, although he did not mention Trump by name.

On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he was present in the Oval Office when Trump spoke with Carney by phone. He said he overheard Carney “very aggressively walking back some of the unfortunate remarks he made at Davos.”

Asked about Bessent’s remarks, Carney insisted “I meant what I said in Davos,” and had not walked back anything during his call with Trump. He also claimed Trump was not upset by Carney’s recent trade deals with China.

The Global Times praised Carney’s rejection of Bessent’s remarks as “another move that was viewed by analysts as reducing overreliance on the U.S. and seeking diversification of foreign relations.”

Shahid Butt has urged his young supporters to knock their enemies’ “teeth out”

A convicted Islamist terrorist is running for local office in the British city of Birmingham. Shahid Butt has urged voters to overlook his past “mistakes,” which include conspiring to bomb the British consulate in Yemen.

In an interview with Birmingham Live this week, Butt described himself as the “ideal candidate” to “unite” his district of Sparkhill in city council elections this May. Two-thirds of Sparkhill’s residents are of Pakistani origin, while a third of Birmingham’s 1.1 million population is Muslim.

Butt was jailed for five years in Yemen in 1999, after being found guilty of planning attacks with a gang of Jihadists on the British consulate in Aden, an Anglican church, and a Swiss-owned hotel.

He maintains that he did nothing wrong, and that his confession was extracted under torture. “It was all just made up,” he told the Birmingham Mail. “Nobody actually died, nothing happened at all.”

He has admitted to “mistakes” in his past, however. Butt was a member of a Pakistani street gang in his youth, which fought with white skinhead gangs in 1980s Birmingham. He also admits to traveling to fight in Afghanistan and Bosnia in the 1990s alongside the son of convicted terrorist Abu Hamza.

Butt, who describes himself as an “Islamist,” is a member of the Independent Candidates Alliance (ICA), a group of Muslim candidates set up by lawyer and accused money launderer Akhmed Yakoob. The ICA is running 20 candidates across Birmingham in the upcoming elections.

“I am not a pacifist,” Butt told Birmingham Live. “If someone attacks me…I am not just going to turn the other cheek, I am going to defend myself. I will be pre-emptive, as the law advises me, if I feel like my life is threatened, or my family, I will do a pre-emptive strike.”

He has advised his fellow Muslims to follow his approach. “Muslims are not pacifists,” he told protesters before local team Aston Villa’s match against Maccabi Tel Aviv last November. “If somebody comes into your face, you knock his teeth out. That’s my message to the youth.”

The Privy Council Office confirmed it allocated $5.55 million and spent $5,349,488.75 on advertising campaigns since 2022, all routed through the Prime Minister’s Office.

Two major ad blitzes carried the same stated goal:

“Transform Canadian patriotism from passive to active and embed the idea of ‘choosing Canada’ into everything we do as a nation. Buy, support, embrace and explore all things Canada.”

The company that promoted insect protein as a climate-friendly food alternative has reportedly only paid back $15 million from a $40 million loan provided by Farm Credit Canada.

Farm Credit Canada has recovered only $15 million of the more than $40 million it loaned to Aspire Food Group, the company behind the government-backed “crickets for food” scheme, and it refuses to say how much taxpayers have actually lost.

The figures were revealed in a response to an Order Paper Question from Conservative MP John Barlow(Foothills), answered January 26.

According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Farm Credit Canada advanced $36.5 million in 2022 and another $4.19 million in 2024 to Aspire Food Group, a company that promoted insect protein as a climate-friendly food alternative.

As of 2025, Aspire had repaid only $15 million.

The government also confirmed Aspire defaulted on its loan obligations.

“Certain events of default occurred,” the response states. On January 24, 2024, Farm Credit Canada issued a demand letter and moved to enforce its security under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. The loans were not repaid, and in May 2025, Aspire was placed into receivership under FTI Consulting.

Aspire’s assets were later sold to Halali Group Holdings, with the Ontario Superior Court approving the transaction in October 2025. Following that sale, Farm Credit Canada received an interim distribution of $15 million from the proceeds.

But when asked how much of the remaining balance was written off or forgiven, Farm Credit Canada refused to answer.

“Farm Credit Canada is not in a position to disclose the details of specific loan losses, write-offs, or loan forgiveness for Aspire or any other borrower,” the agency said, calling the information “commercially sensitive.”

Ottawa can say how much it handed out. It can say how little came back. But it won’t say how big the hole is.

The federal government has admitted it knew Algoma Steel was planning layoffs in Sault Ste. Marie months before approving a $400 million taxpayer-backed loan, according to a new parliamentary disclosure.

The admission came in response to an order paper question from Conservative MP Jim Bélanger (Sudbury East—Manitoulin—Nickel Belt), answered January 26.

Finance Canada confirmed that Algoma first told the federal government in June 2025 that layoffs were a possible part of its business plan as it transitioned to a “sustainable long-term” model.

Despite that warning, Ottawa moved ahead with massive financial support.

The government agreed in principle to provide Algoma with a $400 million loan on September 29, 2025, under the Large Enterprise Tariff Loan facility. The deal was finalized on November 17, 2025. The Ontario government simultaneously committed another $100 million, bringing the total public loan package to $500 million.

Just days later, on November 30, 2025, Algoma formally informed the Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corporation that it would proceed with layoffs.

Bélanger also asked whether the federal government secured any job guarantees in exchange for the loan. Ottawa refused to say.

“The specifics of agreements… are subject to commercial confidentiality,” the Department of Finance said, declining to disclose whether workers’ jobs were protected as a condition of the bailout.

The disclosure undermines earlier claims that the loan was meant to protect jobs in Northern Ontario and raises new questions about why taxpayers were put on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars without clear employment guarantees.

The vast majority of candidates on the ballot box for Canada’s 2025 election have stated they are certain that foreign agents were actively trying to sway people’s voting intentions one way or another.

According to data released from a Survey Of Candidates for the 45th General Election, as noted by Blacklock’s Reporter, nearly half of the candidates were also convinced that illegal funds were being used to interfere in the democratic process.

Most candidates, some 76 percent, said they were concerned with the spread of “false information online.”

About 65 percent agreed that “foreign countries or groups [were] using social media and other means to interfere with or influence the political opinions of Canadians.”

More concerningly, nearly half, 49 percent, believed that there were serious issues with foreign money being “used to influence politics in Canada, and foreign countries or groups trying to interfere with the selection of candidates by political parties.”

The results from the survey, conducted by Léger Marketing Inc. and costing some $68,517, are shocking to say the least and were drawn from 837 candidates nationwide, with people’s party affiliation not being mentioned. Continue…

Man suffering from 'profound loneliness' receives MAiD

In another case of euthanasia via Canada's Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program, a man in his 60s with a disability was euthanized despite his main source of suffering being loneliness.

Referred to as Mr. B in a 2025 report by the Ontario MAiD Death Review Committee (OMDRC), he was living with cerebral palsy, a condition that affects an individual's ability to move, and is usually caused by damage to the developing brain before birth.

This meant Mr. B was wheelchair-bound — but could independently control his wheelchair, transfer himself, and use the bathroom independently.

He lived in a long-term care facility (LTCF) due to his advanced care needs and had been living there for many years.

His life, partly due to his disability, was characterized by much isolation.

Mr. B expressed this "profound psychosocial suffering and loneliness" which he attributed to a lack of relationships and community.

This is an experience he claimed to have had his entire life.

His living conditions did not help.

His time in an LTCF only further exacerbated his loneliness and feelings of a "lack of belongingness."

His life seemed empty — and due to his profound suffering, six to eight weeks prior to Mr. B requesting MAiD, he decided to stop eating and drinking. Continue…

Ontario resident Margaret Marsilla says her 26-year-old son Kiano Vafaeian was given medical assistance in dying (MAID) in B.C. even though he didn’t suffer from a terminal or unbearably painful medical condition and was denied euthanasia in Ontario.

MAID currently permits doctor-assisted suicide for people with terminal illnesses or other incurable medical conditions. Under Track 2, eligibility also extends to individuals with chronic illness or disability who are experiencing “unbearable physical or mental suffering” but whose death is not “reasonably foreseeable.” An expansion to allow MAID for those whose sole underlying condition is mental illness is currently paused until 2027.

“I strongly feel that if he wasn’t approved for MAID, he would have still been around,” Marsilla said, adding that her son was an intelligent and kind young man whose loss is deeply felt by his whole family.

Marsilla, who took part in the press conference with Joseph Caprara, her husband and Vafaeian’s step-father, said they remained very close to Vafaeian into adulthood, providing financial, housing, and medical support and helping him try to stabilize his life as he faced physical and mental health challenges.

Marsilla noted that her son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in early childhood and later went on to lose sight in one eye and diminished sight in the other eye.

She said Vafaeian later went on to become addicted to cannabis, psilocybin, and other drugs in an attempt to treat his discomfort and mental illness. After being repeatedly turned down for MAID in Ontario between 2022 and 2024, he was given a link in an email from Health Canada to find other provinces where he could seek it, she added. Continue…

South Korean Sub Maker Hanwha Signs Agreement With Algoma Steel

South Korean submarine maker Hanwha Oceans says it has signed a series of partnership agreements with Canadian companies, including Sault Ste. Marie’s tariff-battered Algoma Steel.

Hanwha says it signed a memorandum of understanding with Algoma that pledges $275 million in financial support to stand up a new structural steel beam mill in Canada.

The pact also declares Hanwha’s intention to purchase steel products for both the construction of Canada’s new submarine fleet and the maintenance infrastructure to support it.

Both commitments come on the condition that Hanwha wins Ottawa’s massive, multi-billion-dollar procurement contract to supply the Royal Canadian Navy with up to 12 modern submarines.

Hanwha also signed co-operation agreements on Monday with Telesat, MDA Space, Cohere and PV Labs, all while a South Korean delegation of government and business officials visited Toronto.

Rival German bidder TKMS has also signed teaming agreements with Canadian companies, such as Quebec manufacturer Marmen and the artificial intelligence company Cohere.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and her Korean counterpart, Minister Jung-Kwan Kim, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) earlier this week aimed at strengthening Canada and Korea’s “comprehensive strategic partnership,” which launched in 2022, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada said in a Jan. 29 news release.

Ottawa says the non-binding MOU was signed to facilitate cooperation between Canada and Seoul on bringing Korean automotive manufacturing to the country and expanding domestic electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing opportunities. It also covers collaboration on critical minerals and artificial intelligence.

The MOU also intends to attract investments in Canada’s battery production, battery-materials processing, and “the refinement, processing and recycling of Canadian critical minerals.”

“This agreement will grow our auto sector, create good jobs and reinforce Canada’s position as a global leader in future‑ready vehicle manufacturing,” Joly said in a Jan. 29 statement.

She told reporters on Jan. 27 that Canada is “happy to have the Koreans in town,” noting that the agreement follows her trip to Korea in November 2025, where she engaged with senior government officials and industry representatives.

Several have received federal or state government funding for operational or program-specific purposes. Government grants are awarded for legitimate, approved uses such as operational costs, including maintaining offices and paying staff; program-specific work, including refugee legal aid, crime-prevention programs, and security upgrades for mosques; and security purposes, such as protecting buildings from hate crimes. The regime aligns itself with — and provides support for — numerous hostile countries, transnational terrorist groups, and malign actors adverse to the United States, including the Government of the Russian Federation (Russia), the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the Government of Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah,” the order reads.

The order further establishes a tariff system, imposing tariffs on any country that provides oil to Cuba.

Gabbard was present on Wednesday as the FBI executed search warrants at the Fulton County, Georgia Department of Elections, drawing criticism from Democratic lawmakers.

Per PBS, “Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Jim Himes, the top Democrats on committees overseeing national intelligence, are calling on Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to brief them on why she was present at an FBI search of an election office in Georgia this week that has been central to conspiracy theories over President Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss.”

The lawmakers described Gabbard’s presence as “deeply concerning” in a letter to Gabbard.

“The Intelligence Community should be focused on foreign threats and, as you yourself have testified, when those intelligence authorities are turned inwards the results can be devastating for Americans privacy and civil liberties,” the letter reads.

Gabbard has also taken the lead on the Russiagate conspiracy investigation, after revealing last July that Barack Obama and his administration orchestrated a “years-long coup and treasonous conspiracy against the American people, our Republic, in an attempt to undermine President Trump’s administration.”

While attending a screening of the new Melania film at the Trump-Kennedy Center, Trump told reporters that Gabbard is “working very hard on trying to keep the elections safe, and she’s done a very good job.”

“You’ve got a signed judge’s order in Georgia, and you’re going to see some interesting things happening,” Trump continued.

The federal government received more than 10,000 tips and allegations about abuse and misconduct in the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program in just six months — but only a small fraction were acted on, according to a new parliamentary disclosure.

The figures were revealed in a response to an Order Paper Question from Conservative MP Laila Goodridge (Fort McMurray—Cold Lake), answered January 26.

Between April and September 2025, Employment and Social Development Canada recorded:

10,282 leads received and reviewed

2,021 leads actioned

290 referred to partner authorities, such as police or border officials

That means fewer than one in five complaints resulted in any compliance action, and fewer than three per cent were referred to outside authorities.

The department says all tips are reviewed within two business days and triaged based on urgency and credibility. However, it admits only 14 federal employees are assigned to review and process all abuse allegations nationwide.

Complaints to the tip line can come from the public, NGOs, consulates, other government departments, or media reports, and can involve allegations of unsafe housing, unpaid wages, illegal recruitment fees, or intimidation of workers.

While Ottawa insists action is taken “immediately” when required, the numbers suggest most allegations go nowhere.

With more than 10,000 warnings in half a year — and only 290 sent to authorities — the tip line appears to function more as a suggestion box than an enforcement tool.

Court documents say Shivam Lnu coordinated the scheme from January through June 2025, arranging transportation and logistics for people illegally crossing the US-Canada border into Clinton County. Investigators allege the operation relied on drivers traveling in tandem and communication over WhatsApp to guide illegal immigrants across the region and into “safe houses” after entry.

The indictment outlines one incident on Jan. 26, 2025, when US Border Patrol agents tried to stop two vehicles near the northern border. Authorities say both vehicles sped up to evade agents, prompting a pursuit. One vehicle reportedly left the roadway and became immobilized, while the second was later stopped in Mooers, New York. Agents found 12 undocumented immigrants inside the two vehicles.

Prosecutors say messages recovered from WhatsApp tied one of the drivers to a phone number allegedly connected to Shivam. The communications, authorities claim, showed coordination on multiple occasions, including the exchange of “proof of life” photographs and directions for moving people to locations in upstate New York.

Shivam is charged with one count of conspiracy to illegally bring people into the United States and four counts of illegally bringing people into the country for private financial gain. Prosecutors say each count carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison. If convicted on all four smuggling-for-profit counts, the case carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 15 years.

The government also noted Shivam was initially charged by criminal complaint on June 13, 2025, in a related case, accusing him of conspiracy to transport illegal immigrants. An aluminum deposit in East-central Saskatchewan could potentially reshape North America’s critical mineral supply chains, according to a new economic assessment by the Canadian Energy Metals Corp (CEM).

The company says its Thor Project — located near Tisdale within its 2,557-square-kilometre land package — contains one of the largest known aluminum-related deposits in the world, calling it a “possible game changer” for the continent’s aluminum and alumina supply.

Results from the project’s Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) suggest the deposit has the scale and economics to support long-term development.

“This PEA confirms that the Thor Project is a possible game changer for North America’s aluminum supply chain,” Christopher Hopkins, president and chief executive officer of CEM, said in a statement.

“In our world, anything that moves products, transmits power or stores energy uses aluminum.”

The mineral resource estimate includes a measured and indicated resource of 49.5 billion tonnes, containing 6.8 billion tonnes of alumina, along with an inferred resource of 86.6 billion tonnes.

In a written response tabled in the House of Commons, cabinet said digital credentials are strictly optional and there are no plans to create a mandatory national digital ID.

Blacklock's Reporter says the statement came after questions from Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu, who asked whether the government intended to require digital identification to access services or pay taxes.

“Digital credentials are in use as an additional way to authenticate users, but they are a voluntary method for accessing Government of Canada services,” cabinet wrote in an Inquiry Of Ministry response.

“There are no plans or progress to report on the implementation of a national digital identification system as one is not being implemented.”

The assurance follows federal budget language and internal memos that point to expanding digital services across departments.

The federal government says it has signed a proposed financial settlement with former students of a Saskatchewan residential school that could see each student receive up to $15,000.

The agreement follows a long-running class action lawsuit and could see Ottawa pay out more than $27 million to former students. The Île-à-la-Crosse School operated from the 1860s until the 1970s and had approximately 1,500 students; predominantly Métis children from across northern Saskatchewan.

The agreement is separate from one made by the provincial government. Premier Scott Moe said in September 2025 the province had reached an agreement in principle to pay $40.2 million in restitution to former students of Île-à-la-Crosse.

Under terms of the settlement with the federal government, those who attended the school for less than five years could receive up to $10,000, while those who attended for five years or more could receive up to $15,000, according to a Jan. 30 news release. The class action is open to students who attended only during the day and those who boarded at the facility.

The federal government said an independent party would be appointed by the court to administer the funds and determine the compensation for each former student.

Ottawa also agreed to pay an additional $10 million for “healing, wellness, protection of languages, education, and commemoration for former students.” Continue…

“The recent rise in extortion in Surrey and across the Lower Mainland of British Columbia is unacceptable,” Anandasangaree said in a Jan. 28 letter. “The Government of Canada is committed to dismantling the criminal networks that have created a climate of fear and intimidation amongst communities.”

The move comes a day after Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke called on the federal government to either declare a national state of emergency or implement “similar extraordinary measures” to address extortion impacting communities across Canada.

Locke told reporters after Anandasangaree’s announcement that while she welcomes the “significant” additional resources promised by the federal government, “there is no question” that her city will need more help to deal with the ongoing extortion issue.

Canada’s Public Health Agency more or less admitted that the COVID shots have caused harm to no less than 10,000 people and that it must take direct control of a vaccine injury compensation program.

As mentioned in a briefing note from December, the consultants the government hired to oversee its Vaccine Injury Support Program (VISP) program were the cause of “frustration and hardship” in helping jab-injured people get compensation.

As such, starting April 1, the government will take direct control over the program from Oxaro Inc., which to date has only paid out $18 million to jab-injured Canadians.

“We have heard the process has been slow and difficult for many,” the agency admitted.

“The Government of Canada is committed to providing timely financial support for people in Canada who experience a serious and permanent injury as a result of receiving a Health Canada-approved vaccine,” it added.

Canada’s government continues to purchase the COVID shots, although its own data shows that most Canadians are flat-out refusing a COVID booster injection.

The news also comes as the government has had to increase spending on VISP, as reported by LifeSiteNews.

VISP was launched in December 2020 after the Canadian government gave vaccine makers a shield from liability regarding COVID-19 jab-related injuries. However, mismanagement within the program has led to many injured Canadians still waiting to receive compensation while government contractors grow richer.

The Public Health Agency has already admitted that it had kept incomplete data regarding “adverse events” from the mRNA shots.

Over 10,000 “serious” cases have been reported, including 442 deaths outright, spontaneous abortions, and hundreds of heart attacks, strokes, organ damage and facial paralysis. Continue…

World Health Organization Says ‘Low Risk’ of Nipah Virus Spreading from India

The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) on Friday said the “risk of further spread of infection” from the small outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus in India is “low.”

“There is no evidence yet of increased human to human transmission,” the organization said in an email to Reuters.

W.H.O. said it did not recommend travel or trade restrictions based on the outbreak, which so far has affected only two known patients in West Bengal, India. Indian health officials traced 196 people who came into contact with these patients and placed them under observation. As of Friday, none of them has been listed as infected.

Nipah is a virus spread by bodily fluids, usually from infected animals like bats to humans. It presents with common flu-like symptoms but is extraordinarily dangerous, because it causes swelling in the brain and spinal cord. The bill creates new offences (Criminal Code Section 264.01), which are deeply concerning for normal, loving family interactions, based on a “pattern of coercive or controlling conduct,” even when no violence, threats, or illegal acts occur.

It criminalizes a pattern of otherwise lawful and often common behaviour that may later be perceived as threatening by an intimate partner.

That means ordinary family interactions could be re-interpreted as criminal after the fact.

Examples include:

– Asking a spouse where they are after they said they’d be home

-Expressing concern about excessive drinking

-Disagreeing about finances or spending

-Asking a partner not to give children junk food

– Raising concerns about time away from family

– Setting household boundaries or expectations

These are not crimes. They are part of marriage, parenting, and shared responsibility.

This does not diminish the seriousness of coercive control in genuinely abusive relationships. But criminal law should target clear abuse and violence, which are already addressed in law.

Bill C-16, as written, opens the door to police intervention in the homes of ordinary families.

Senior Trump administration officials have reportedly met several times with Canadian separatist leaders seeking independence for Alberta, according to a new report, as relations between Washington and Ottawa remain strained.

The Financial Times reported that US officials met in Washington with representatives of the Alberta Prosperity Project, a group advocating independence for the oil-rich Canadian province, on three occasions since last spring. The meetings reportedly took place as political and trade tensions between the two countries have escalated.

Jeff Rath, legal counsel for the group, told the outlet after attending meetings that, “The US is extremely enthusiastic about a free and independent Alberta.” He also claimed officials attending the sessions were high-ranking, saying, “We’re meeting very, very senior people leaving our meetings to go directly to the Oval Office.”

The Federal Court of Appeal has ruled that Ottawa’s ban on the import and manufacture of single-use plastic items is reasonable, overturning a lower court decision three years ago.

The unanimous Jan. 30 decision by the three-judge panel found the federal government was reasonable in designating single-use plastic items as toxic and will allow the ban on their production or import.

The manufacturing and import ban was put in place in December 2022 under former Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault and includes single-use plastic items such as grocery bags, stir sticks, plastic straws, disposable polystyrene food containers, and plastic cutlery and dishes, with items like six-pack drink rings being phased out by 2024.

A Federal Court decision in 2023 found that Ottawa had overstepped its authority with the ban in a manner that was “unreasonable and unconstitutional.” The federal government first announced the ban as part of a plan to achieve “zero plastic waste” by 2030. The government said it chose the listed items because they were among the most commonly found as litter and had known and accessible alternatives.

The Jan. 30 appeal decision means the ban will continue and prohibit the manufacture of the six categories of single-use plastic items in Canada.

Ottawa proposed in December to ease its rules on single-use plastics to allow them to be manufactured and sold in Canada for export, saying the environmental benefits of keeping the full ban in place are outweighed by the economic disadvantages. Continue…

The Canada Revenue Agency fired more than 100 employees last year, including 25 for misconduct and 78 for fraudulently applying for and receiving the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) during the COVID-19 pandemic, a new CRA report says.

The agency recorded 370 cases of misconduct in the 2024-2025 fiscal year, 266 of which led to disciplinary measures including suspensions, oral or written reprimands, financial penalties, demotion, and terminations, according to the CRA’s second “Annual Report on Employee Misconduct and Wrongdoing,” released on Jan. 28.

Of the misconduct cases, 25 employees were terminated, while more than 150 employees faced suspensions ranging from one to 30 days.

An additional 78 employees were terminated after they “inappropriately” claimed the CERB benefit, which provided financial support to Canadians whose jobs were “directly” affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said. Continue…

“The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Halmagean’s death by the Latvian military police, with support from the Canadian Forces military police, is ongoing,” DND said in a statement released Friday night. “At this time, there is no indication this incident poses an increased threat to the safety and security of our deployed members.”

Société de transport de Montréal, 2019 SCC 59 and unanimously ruled in favour of Bela Kosoian, overturning the decisions of the Québec courts below and ordering the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) (the authority responsible for the subway system), the City of Laval and constable Fabio Camacho to pay her $20,000 in relation with her detention and arrest 10 years ago.

This decision is an important victory for Kosoian, but also for the Canadian Civil Law Association, which acted as intervener before the SCC in this case, and for all Canadians. Indeed, the Supreme Court ruled that police officers are civilly liable if they interfere with Canadians’ rights and freedoms based on a non-existent offence. The SCC also confirmed that Canadians can refuse to identify themselves to police officers when such request has no valid legal basis, ruling that if the offence the police officer believes has been committed does not exist, neither the Québec Code of penal procedure nor any statute or common law rule gives police officers the power to require a person to follow their orders and to identify themselves. Ottawa spent at least $839 million on direct cash payments to Ukraine war refugees arriving in Canada, according to federal records that detail the scale of benefits provided under emergency immigration measures.

Blacklock's Reporter says an inquiry of ministry response from the Department of Immigration says 296,779 Ukrainians received one-time cash grants after landing in Canada, with adults paid $3,000 and minor children $1,500 to help cover basic needs such as food, housing, clothing, furniture, and other immediate expenses.

The cash payments were only part of the overall cost.

Federal documents show an additional $102.5 million was spent on free hotels and temporary accommodations, $87.9 million on settlement services, and $16.8 million to administer the Canada-Ukraine Transition Assistance Initiative.

Total spending under the program reached approximately $1.14 billion.

The figures were tabled in the House of Commons in response to a written question from Conservative MP Kerry Diotte (Edmonton Griesbach), who asked for a detailed breakdown of the roughly $20 billion Ottawa has committed to Ukraine-related initiatives since 2022.

Under the emergency program, Ukrainian refugees were offered free flights to Canada, up to 14 nights of free accommodation, language training, orientation services to help families enroll children in school, and free work and study permits.

More than one million Ukrainians applied to settle in Canada before the program expired in 2024, with about 990,000 applications approved.

Internal government documents released previously acknowledged concerns about preferential treatment.

A 2024 internal report, Rapid Evaluation Of The Ukraine Response, said there was a “perception of unfairness” compared with Canada’s response to other humanitarian crises.

It noted criticism that the program was seen as a privileged initiative for a mostly white population, particularly when compared to the treatment of Afghan allies following the fall of Kabul.

The report also revealed Ukrainians were granted exemptions from standard security screening requirements.

Due to overwhelming demand, mandatory fingerprinting and other biometric checks were waived for children under 17, adults over 61, and Ukrainians who had previously held a Canadian visitor visa within the past 10 years.

In addition, Ukrainians were exempted from declaring when they intended to leave Canada, a departure from standard immigration rules.

The department warned these measures could have long-term consequences.

“This may set precedents for future crisis responses,” the report said.

Immigration Minister Lena Diab says she wants her department to start tracking the number of people on temporary visas departing Canada.

Diab said there is currently no simple way for federal bodies such as the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to monitor the number of temporary residents leaving the country. She said she wants to change that with the help of digital tools.

“There’s a number [of] countries around the world that do track those. And I believe we need to also be doing that,” the minister told The Canadian Press in a recent phone interview. “Did we have the capabilities to do that before? No. Should we? I think yes, and that is something that you will see us working toward,” she said, as reported by the media outlet on Jan. 31.

Diab’s comment comes amid data from her department stating that nearly 1.9 million temporary visas, including work and student permits, will expire this year. Continue…

The FBI and Metro Police raided an illegal biological lab in Las Vegas on Saturday morning.

The bio lab in Vegas is possibly linked to another illegal lab under investigation in Fresno, California, where authorities found deadly viruses such as HIV, Covid and Ebola.

As TGP’s Brian Lupo reported back in July 2023, – An illegal bio lab was discovered in a believed-to-be vacant building in Reedley, California in Fresno County.

City code enforcement stumbled upon the building in December 2022 when they discovered a garden hose running up into the building through a hole in the wall. In March 2023, they obtained a warrant to inspect the property, and in April, the Fresno County Department of Public Health ordered an inspection of the facility.

Investigators inspected the building that contained the lab in July 2023 and found a room used to make COVID-19 tests and pregnancy tests. They also found over 35 freezers and refrigeration units that contained “thousands of bodily fluids, serums, tissues, and other medical items.”

The lab contained refrigerators full of deadly viruses and genetically engineered mice to transmit the deadly viruses to humans!

The man connected to the bio lab in Fresno is in federal custody.

FAA To Allow 44 SpaceX Starship Launches From Kennedy Space Center Per Year

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will allow SpaceX to launch its behemoth Starship from Kennedy Space Center in Florida 44 times per year.

That decision was released on Jan. 30 in an environmental impact report, which also recommended that the company conduct 88 landings: 44 for the Starship spacecraft and 44 for the Super Heavy booster.

The FAA makes this recommendation while noting concerns from Brevard County residents about noise, especially sonic booms during late-night operations; beach access related to the launches; and the possibility that the National Park Service could lose revenue due to the increased need to close parts of the Canaveral National Seashore.

Impacts on commercial flights, especially international ones, due to ground stops or re-routing were also acknowledged.

FTC Warns 42 Law Firms Over DEI Hiring

The Trump administration is still going after DEI - or 'diversity, equity and inclusion' (i.e. white people are the scourge of the earth) - this time, in Big Law.

On Friday, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sent letters to 42 law firms warning them about "potentially unfair and anticompetitive employment practices" involving DEI, after they all participated in an anti-white program run by "Diversity Lab," a "for-profit DEI-consultancy business."

All of these firms recently participated in the Mansfield Certification program, according to public information. Mansfield Certification is a creation of the company Diversity Lab, a for-profit DEI-consultancy business, which claims to “write the unwritten rules” establishing common race and gender-based employment practices across the legal industry. To receive the certification, law firms must agree to follow certain of Diversity Lab’s DEI-based employment standards. Public information also suggests that they would meet regularly with Diversity Lab and their competitor law firms to discuss common implementation of Diversity Lab’s criteria.

According to the FTC, the letter recipients "are among the largest law firms in the United States, collectively employing over 50,000 attorneys subject to Diversity Lab's criteria." Continue…

The request was justified by what staff described as a “covenant of good faith” with the CBC, despite the broadcaster’s open hostility toward Conservatives.

Rebel News was out in force at the Conservative Party convention in Calgary. We had five reporters there, including our newest recruit, Tamara Lich! It was great to see Tamara interviewing MPs. And she must have had 500 people stop her to ask for a selfie!

But something weird happened, and I’ve sent a letter to the party bosses asking for an explanation.

The CBC state broadcaster sent their two most rabid anti-Conservative activists, David Cochrane and Rosemary Barton. Cochrane is infamous for trying to get Rebel News kicked out of the leaders debate last year. And Barton actually sued the Conservative Party right in the middle of the 2021 election campaign.

During Pierre Polievre’s speech, Cochrane and Barton couldn’t contain themselves — they visibly sneered at him, turned their back to him and generally acted like unruly schoolchildren. A lot of people saw this and snapped photos of this disgraceful conduct. Tamara took a photo of their antics, too, and posted it on X.

It’s not a gotcha picture. In fact, it’s not even that bad. But it shows the disdain those government journalists have for Conservatives. (They are always on their best behaviour when they’re at a Liberal convention.)

But here’s where it gets weird. A Conservative staffer went to Tamara and said that Cochrane had demanded Tamara’s tweet be taken down.

Could you imagine being a political journalist, dishing it out all day long, but being such a thin-skinned loser that when someone simply posts a picture of you, you want to censor it? Cochrane is a classic cry-bully — but he lacked the courage to talk to Tamara directly. So he tattled to the Conservatives.

But instead of ignoring Cochrane, the Conservative staffer actually ran that errand for him — telling Tamara that the party had “a covenant of good faith with the media about not taking these kinds of photos while live hits are happening.” Continue…

Health Canada is following in the FDA’s footsteps, sealing COVID-19 vaccine and drug injury records for 15 years, mirroring the US regulator’s attempt to seal Pfizer’s clinical trial data for 75 years.

According to an Order Paper response on access-to-information delays, Health Canada confirmed its longest active extension spans a decade and a half for a request seeking “several million pages” of vaccine and adverse drug reaction reports dating back to 1998. Although the department claims the request has been “successfully rescoped and is actively being processed,” it admits the delay remains in place because “the Act does not provide an opportunity to amend [an extension] after the first 30 days.”

This pattern extends beyond Health Canada, as first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency acknowledged an extension of 3,105 days — totalling more than eight years — for a file containing 67,825 pages, citing the need for “proper consultations” before release.

Pandemic-era secrecy remains entrenched at the Public Health Agency of Canada, where the longest extension for an active request is 5.3 years. The agency blamed “the volume of records going through the President’s office,” parliamentary motions, and “extensive consultations,” while faulting the requester’s “refusal… to discuss the scope of the request.”

Other agencies reported shorter delays, including 240 days at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, while the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board claimed none.

Despite repeated assurances that information should be “open by default,” Canada’s access to information regime increasingly resembles a pharmaceutical confidentiality agreement where the public is told to wait (indefinitely) for answers about products injected into their bodies.

Transparency delayed, once again, is transparency denied.

If this is true, it is an extremely unusual signal: it reflects not merely traffic management, but a high degree of vigilance over the “flow of power.” Xi Jinping is concerned that various military forces might enter Beijing through unconventional means. This indicates that the political situation in Beijing remains opaque and under intense pressure, with the core of power lacking absolute control over the situation. The more roads are blocked, the more it shows the situation is not yet stable; the more silence there is, the greater the possibility of powerful undercurrents surging beneath the surface.

The X post by @liumin1988 claims a suspension of rail transport from 23 regions—mostly military areas—to Beijing, interpreting it as a sign of Xi Jinping’s fears over troop movements and political instability in the capital.

According to reports, the 75th Group Army, stationed in Kunming, Yunnan Province, has left a portion of its main forces to continue garrisoning outside Kunming, Yunnan Province, while the rest of its main forces have split into two routes, converging respectively toward Nanning in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Guiyang in Guizhou Province. At the same time, the main forces of the 74th Group Army have also split into two routes, converging respectively toward Guangzhou in Guangdong Province and Changsha in Hunan Province.

Their intention is that, in the event of Xi Jinping’s downfall or death, the Southern Theater Command headquarters, the 74th Group Army headquarters, and the 75th Group Army headquarters would join forces to rapidly seize control of Yunnan Province, Guangxi Region, Guizhou Province, Hunan Province, and Guangdong Province. After that, these five provinces and regions would form a unified entity and declare independence from the central regime.

Bill Blair to resign Commons seat, head to London as High Commissioner

Bill Blair is expected to resign his seat in the House of Commons later Monday, according to Postmedia.

Staff at Canada’s High Commission in London have been informed that Blair will be arriving shortly to take up the role of High Commissioner.

The federal government has not yet issued a formal public announcement confirming the move.

Blair, a Liberal MP and former cabinet minister, has represented a Toronto-area riding and previously served in several senior public safety and defence-related roles within government.

The current High Commissioner, Ralph Goodale, is expected to return to Regina. Goodale is scheduled to attend a fundraising event on Feb. 21, signalling the end of his diplomatic posting in the United Kingdom.

Goodale, a long-time Liberal figure, previously served as a federal cabinet minister and later as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom following his departure from elected office.

If confirmed, Blair’s resignation will trigger a vacancy in the House of Commons and represents another notable personnel shift within senior Liberal ranks. The Prime Minister’s Office has not commented on the timing of Blair’s resignation or the formal appointment process for the London post.
