A gunman has been shot dead and another is being treated after opening fire on Bondi Beach, killing 10 people in what is believed to be a targeted attack on a Jewish event.

It is understood a Chanukkah event was the target of the attack, which police sources believe had been planned for months.

One gunman is understood to have been shot dead and another has been shot and is custody while being worked on by emergency services.

NewsWire understands 10 people have been confirmed dead, including children and a police officer.

Officers are continuing to scour the area for live bombs, with an unconfirmed report made to police that one was placed under the pedestrian bridge.

Drone footage from the scene appeared to capture the last stand of the two gunmen from the bridge behind Bondi park.

One of the gunmen, dressed in a black shirt, takes cover behind the fence with the other man lays motionless on the ground.

The gunman appears to be firing towards a man behind a white van before appearing to be shot and falling to the ground.

The shooters appeared to both be wearing ammo belts, with at least one of the weapons being scooped.

The firearms appeared to be semiautomatic with magazines seen on the ground.

At least three firearms appeared to be present during the shooting.

Separate video uploaded to X showed the brave moment a bystander rushed one of the gunmen while he was firing on others.

The man, dressed in a white shirt, can be seen crouching behind a car before running up to one of the shooters, grabbing him from behind, and wrestling the shotgun away from him.

The bystander aims the weapon back at the gunman, who paces away from him.

The second gunman can be seen in the video continuing to fire from the bridge.

In a statement, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the scenes in Bondi are “shocking and distressing”.

“Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected,” he said.

“I just have spoken to the AFP Commissioner and the NSW Premier.

“We are working with NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed.

“I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW Police.”

Opposition leader Sussan Ley, in a statement, said “Australians are in deep mourning tonight.

“With hateful violence striking at the heart of an iconic Australian community, a place we all know so well and love, Bondi.

“The loss of life from this attack is significant and I join with the Prime Minister in urging all Australians to follow official advice from police and relevant authorities.

Ms Ley said the attack occurred “as our Jewish community came together at the Chanukah by the Sea celebration”.

“This was a celebration of peace and hope for the future, severed by hate,” she said.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said paramedics were called at 6.45pm to reports of multiple people shot at Bondi beach.

“We responded with more than 26 resources, including medical teams by helicopter and roads intensive care paramedics and special operations paramedics.

One mother whose two daughters were with friends enjoying a night swim, said panic broke out when the sound of gunshots rang out.

“A lady grabbed them and told them to run,” the mother said.

“They saw the gun and are now hiding in a house”.

The woman said her daughter texted her to let her know they were sheltering at a local resident’s house.

“There was a shooting in Bondi but we are all safe don’t worry we are currently in someone’s house,” the text message read.

The mother said she spoke to the woman sheltering her daughters and told her not to pick them up “as everything was closed”.

“I was watching the Brown shooting (Brown University in the US) … but never in my wildest dream did I think they would be near a shooting in Bondi,” the mum said.

The beach was packed on Sunday night for the Bondi Christmas markets.

Video purporting to be from Bondi Beach on Sunday appeared to show gunshots and people fleeing from the beach.

In another video, two men – one appearing to be armed with a shotgun – can be seen firing towards the beach as people can be heard screaming.

At least 12 shots can be heard before the video ends.

In a separate video, police can be seen performing CPR on a man on the ground on the bridge near to the Pavillion.

Other officers are seen attending to another man.

In a post, NSW Police said they were “responding to a developing incident at Bondi Beach and are urging the public to avoid the area”.

“Anyone at the scene should take shelter,” police said.

“Police are on scene and more information will be provided when it comes to hand.”

A police spokesman said officers remained at the scene and that the incident was ongoing.

A resident across the street said “this is from my apartment what the f**k. I saw the police arrest one and it looks like one has been shot by police”.

Christina Paxson ’82 Tapped to Lead Brown

ChristinaPaxson_PresidentElect_BrownUniv_high_res.jpgChristina Paxson ’82, dean of Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and Hughes Rogers Professor of Economics and Public Affairs, was appointed president-elect of Brown University in March. Paxson, who joined the Princeton faculty in 1986, is an award-winning economist, whose research—focusing on health, economic development, and public policy—has been published widely in a plethora of scholarly journals.

In an interview with The Brown Daily Herald, Paxson said, “I loved my time at Princeton, but I find the Brown character to be very appealing,” citing Brown’s university-college model and adding that she had received her undergraduate degree from Swarthmore, another small, liberal arts college.

Paxson, who is married to Arthur “Ari” Gabinet ’79, will begin her tenure at Brown on July 1.

It was the fall of 1978, and the Pat Metheny Group was playing an Oktoberfest concert at Swarthmore College. Ari Gabinet P’19 P’MD’20, a senior fellow at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs and pre-law advisor for the University, remembers the day fondly.

“Sunlight filtered through the trees, and red and gold leaves were floating down to the stage,” Gabinet wrote in an email to The Herald. “The music was magical, and President Paxson was so beautiful, it was impossible not to fall in love with her.”

The love story of President Christina Paxson P’19 P’MD’20 and Gabinet began that fall at Swarthmore in the first month of Paxson’s first year. Paxson joined Gabinet in the dining hall, where he was sitting alone. Soon after, he asked her to dinner at the Front Porch, a restaurant near campus. She then asked him on a second date, this time at a sandwich shop, and finally, their “courtship was really cemented at the Oktoberfest concert,” Gabinet wrote.

After Swarthmore, Paxson and Gabinet got married. On their wedding day, Gabinet recalled getting into an argument with a police officer regarding some shaving cream on their car. “Feeling very liberal in my use of profanity,” Gabinet wrote, he was arrested and Paxson had to bail him out.

Paxson and Gabinet have two sons together, and Gabinet said “the early part of our marriage was consumed with two things: professional ambition and raising children, and those two things are really hard to do at the same time.”

When Paxson initially accepted the job at Brown, their immediate family was scattered across the country.

Eventually, Gabinet assumed his current role at Brown, their older son came to Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School and their younger son came to Brown for undergrad. Reunited on College Hill, Paxson described their time together as “quite lovely.”

“We cooked together, we hung out together,” she said in an interview with The Herald. “We had more time together than we’d had for years.”

They describe their marriage as one of love and support amid lives dictated by professional aspirations.

In a relationship with two busy people, “the best thing you can do is be nice to the other person,” Gabinet said. In alternating cycles of stress and support, “you can create a kind of a virtuous cycle.”

For Paxson and Gabinet, Brown is more than a place for romance. It has been a place for professional pursuits, growth and family.

“I think every place is a place for romance, if you’re with the right person,” Paxson said.

For many couples, Brown has been that place.
