U.S. Embassy in Guatemala Weaponized Visa Process to Launder Cartel Money, Fuel Leftist Causes, Officials Say

GUATEMALA CITY, Dec. 11, 2025 — For years, I have avoided the term “deep state” because it sounded conspiratorial. As a former military journalist, I believed that using words like that triggered an immediate loss of credibility among certain audiences, so I purposely avoided it. However, after interviewing dozens of Guatemalan government officials last week, I’ve concluded the deep state is real and actively undermining President Trump’s interests and those of most Americans.

What I ultimately learned during my time in Guatemala is that Biden-era State Department holdovers at the U.S. embassy in Guatemala are facilitating a cartel money-laundering scheme to fund discontinued USAID programs, according to senior Guatemalan leaders. These same officials also said the American embassy fabricates charges against political enemies, leaks stories to the media, harasses, follows, and even attacks individuals to manipulate elections and secure desired outcomes.

This story may invite skepticism, and rightfully so—I’m a skeptic myself—but after lengthy closed-door meetings with over a dozen senior leaders from Guatemala’s executive, legislative, and judicial branches, their consistent accounts corroborate a clear and disturbing picture.

Representatives in Congress, Constitutional Court magistrates, and Attorney General’s office officials provided hours of testimony corroborating accounts that Guatemala’s government was coerced into borrowing over $1 billion in its new budget to fund NGOs previously supported by USAID.

Intimidation tactics included the U.S. embassy revoking visas for Guatemalan congressmen and their families, including sick relatives needing U.S. medical care and children studying in the U.S. In one case, a high-ranking Constitutional Court magistrate reported being followed; when she resisted pressure tactics from the American embassy, her vehicle was flipped in an attack intended for her daughter, though unbeknownst to the perpetrators, only her driver and security were inside. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.

As a journalist, I rarely insert myself into stories, but traditional reporting might bury this amid the continuous stream of propaganda pushed on most “news” outlets these days. Context is essential: I’m an American, a 6-foot-5-inch-tall, 265-pound, Florida-born, white guy who traveled down to Guatemala through my personal connections in pursuit of the truth.

In 2022, I ran for U.S. Congress in Tampa, winning the Republican primary and leading on Election Day and early voting—despite more Democrats voting—but ended up losing via mail-in ballots (Florida mailed them to people who did not request them that year). That campaign introduced me to foreign affairs experts, senators, congressmen and businessmen around the world. Combined with my travels (15 countries just this year) and business dealings, it fostered unexpected international friendships.

About 18 months ago, I met a businessman who formerly served in the Guatemalan government, and he shared tales of U.S. State Department corruption.

At first, while I took his allegations seriously, I doubted most Americans would care about the issue back home. But the more we developed our friendship, the more he told me stories of gross manipulation of power, extortion and corruption.

However, hearing a story from one person is just one angle. Last week, I finally said, alright, I’ll fly down to Guatemala again, but line me up with some meetings. I wanted to talk to members of the Guatemalan government face-to-face. I wanted to hear what they had to say.

In all, I met with some of the most senior leaders in Guatemala, including Constitutional Court magistrates, the Attorney General of Guatemala and senior members of her team, mayors, congressmen, former presidential cabinet officials, business leaders and more. (It is important to note, due to credible and legitimate fears of U.S. embassy retaliation, the names of those officials are being withheld from this report.)

During over 30 hours of meetings, spread out across two days, I heard consistent accounts verifying unacceptable, illegal, and un-American behavior by U.S. officials. There was no way they were all making this up, and more importantly, they had the receipts. Plus, they were genuinely scared. I was disgusted by what had been done to them, and I found myself apologizing in every meeting for the behavior of these U.S. State Department officials.

The scheme: After President Trump ended USAID, cutting funding for left-wing programs, Obama-Biden holdovers weaponized visas to force Guatemala into loans to fund these NGOs. According to the officials I met with, the loans are “factored” through cartel-linked financial firms: dirty money is loaned, repaid with clean government funds plus fees, laundering it to eventually support left-wing, pro-Marxist initiatives like diversity, equity, and inclusion; transgender rights, wealth and land redistribution, and climate activism.

According to testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives, USAID spent millions on such efforts, including $6 million to promote LGBTQ+ initiatives in Guatemala.

By the way, that money doesn’t just stay in Guatemala. It is ultimately funneled back to the U.S. where it inevitably funds your local Antifa, Pro-Palestine and No Kings protests found on the streets of America’s friendliest cities—you know, places like Los Angeles, Portland, Minneapolis, New York and more.

One thing was absolutely consistent. Guatemalan leaders unanimously reported that Ambassador Tobin Bradley and Deputy Chief of Mission Patrick Ventrell—both Biden holdovers—revoked visas to coerce votes, including the one for the new budget. Ventrell reportedly contacts officials directly, consistently bypassing official channels, with regular threats. In one day, over 300 visas were canceled for non-compliant congressmen and their families.

At the same time, compliance with Ventrell’s wishes brought rewards. Just hours before a key vote, a visa was reinstated for Luis Fernando Aguirre, a congressman from Agua Blanca, Jutiapa. His visa had previously been stripped earlier this year after the U.S. government reportedly revoked it due to alleged drug trafficking. Aguirre’s visa was reportedly reinstated in exchange for securing 10 votes supporting Ventrell’s agenda.

This practice by the U.S. embassy in Guatemala isn’t exactly new. According to the officials I met with, this sort of coercion began under Ambassador Todd Robinson, who served under President Barack Obama, and still has significant influence over Ventrell, as well as reported business dealings in Guatemala.

Additionally, the interference extends beyond budgets.

Three hours before a conservative Supreme Court justice’s expected election as president of the court, her visa was revoked via WhatsApp, the story was leaked to embassy-controlled media, and the votes were squashed.

The message to the other justices was clear: “don’t vote for her, or if you do, we can take your visas, as well.”

For Guatemalans, as for most citizens of other countries, U.S. visas are vital for travel, business and credibility; revocation can cause bank accounts and credit cards to be canceled, crippling livelihoods.

It’s not just about a budget vote or a magistrate, either. With Guatemala slated to hold significantly important elections next year, the Obama-Biden holdovers are trying to ensure the funding mechanism stays in place, and by that, they need to control the outcome of the elections for all offices.

As a result of the U.S. embassy’s ongoing effort to install even more corrupt leftists in Guatemala’s government, Guatemala’s conservative leaders are genuinely fearful that if something is not done to address this problem immediately, the nation may end up like Venezuela.

In light of these discoveries, and unaffiliated meetings I have had with other government representatives who have shared similar stories, I do not believe these tactics are limited to just Guatemala.

Immediate action must be taken.

First, President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio could replace every Obama-Biden-era ambassador immediately. This can be done quickly and legally, without Senate confirmation, by appointing people loyal to the president as chargé d’affaires ad interim or special envoys.

Second, President Trump could form a commission to interview foreign officials and investigate how large the scale of this practice has been used in Guatemala and other countries.

Third, Congress could hold hearings and establish a committee to also investigate the depth of the scandal.

Additionally, we must review all political asylum issued by the U.S. embassy in Guatemala, as it appears asylum was provided to people with absolutely no business to receive it.

This is national security: end the deep state’s sabotage now, or we’ll watch as Latin America slips away.

About the PSL

The protests were huge—the biggest anti-war demonstrations ever. The anti-war movement spanned the globe. It was an historic demonstration of unity by the people of all continents uniting against U.S. imperialism. Yet the war machine pushed ahead.

Today, tens of thousands of Iraqis are dead. Thousands of GIs, workers in uniform, have been killed or wounded, with more being sent to their deaths daily.

Since 1945, every generation has been called on to send its sons and daughters to invade foreign lands: Korea, Vietnam, Dominican Republic, Cambodia, Laos, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Somalia, Haiti, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan. These do not include U.S.-led proxy wars against Cuba, Nicaragua, Congo, Angola, Mozambique, Colombia, the Philippines, Venezuela and others. Nor does it include the two interimperialist world wars of the first half of the 20th Century. "Endless war" did not begin with the Bush regime!

Today it is Iraq. Tomorrow it will be others. The Pentagon now has a network of 750 military bases located in 130 countries—not to mention the 6,000 bases inside the U.S. and its territories.

The Party for Socialism and Liberation emerges from this mass antiwar movement with the firm conviction that the source of the endless war drive is U.S. capitalism itself. The solution to war to finally end the "endless wars"—is to end the system of capitalism. We need revolution.

Socialism is the only answer

Disguised under the label of a free market economy, U.S. capitalism has evolved into the most highly centralized form of state monopoly capitalism. The banks, the concentrated media monopolies, the transnational corporations—especially the oil and energy conglomerates—and the Pentagon have merged into a permanent warfare state.

There is only one solution to the crisis posed by state monopoly capitalism: socialism. To secure lasting peace and justice requires abolishing the dictatorship of the super-rich and their warfare state.

We stand for the socialist reorganization of society. There is no "third way." Illusions about a "kinder, gentler" capitalism are just that—illusions. The idea that the bosses and the capitalist state's grip on society can be abolished through any means other than a revolutionary overturn is utopian fantasy.

We need a revolutionary party

The PSL has been created to be a vehicle for the multinational working class in the struggle for socialism.

Revolutionary Marxism requires a revolutionary party to flourish and develop. Marxism is not an abstract doctrine but rather a guide to action. It must be constantly tested by action and in debate.

Under those circumstances, the rule of capitalism must face the challenge of a revived movement for socialism. That is our Party's orientation. Marx's prognosis and theory of revolution in the advanced capitalist societies will be validated by the revival of revolutionary socialism in the very center of imperialism.

At the same time as we aim for revolution in the United States, we stand for defense of the existing workers states, the national liberation movements and for workers and oppressed people around the world in the crosshairs of U.S. imperialism. Only a party steeled in working class internationalism can hope to lead a revolution in the United States, the 21st Century prison house of nations.

The magnitude of our tasks will be matched by our determination to win. Join us!
