Bowser said she made the decision for her family. In the interview, she said now is the time to do something else while she still has a lot of energy, vigor and great ideas.

Mayor Bowser's legacy

The mayor has spent the past year trying to strike a balance between her constituents and the Trump administration, trying to avoid a clash with the president, who has threatened to overturn the District's Home Rule. That got even trickier with the federal surge of law enforcement in the District.

“We started this month, this year with a new president who was an avowed critic of the District, and we had to reset that relationship,” Bowser said. “We started with a president that clearly had a plan to move fast, and one of his targets was the District. And we also have a Congress that has pretty much given him carte blanche to do it.

“I think starting with even the most recent elections where we had just a good turnout and great wins for Democrats in New Jersey and Virginia and New York City,” she said. “This is going to be, the next 10 months are going to be different than the last 10 months.So, we see more of a check, more of a willingness to disagree with the president, so I think that bodes well for how the District and the president and the Congress will work together as we approach the midterms.”

Kristi Dobbs, who was seriously injured by Pfizer’s COVID-19 shot, told The Defender that the vaccine-injured are “still hurting, dying and being discarded as trash.”

One in every 10 U.S adults who received the COVID-19 vaccine experienced “major” side effects, and over a third (36%) suffered “minor” side effects, according to a national survey conducted this month.

Based on a U.S. adult population of 258 million in 2020, the results mean that about 17 million adults who got the COVID-19 vaccine experienced major health effects, and roughly 63 million had minor side effects, said Rasmussen Reports, which conducted the survey.

The survey, which included 1,292 adults and had a margin sampling error of +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% confidence level, also revealed that 46% of both vaccinated and unvaccinated adults think it’s likely that COVID-19 vaccines have caused a significant number of unexplained deaths.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, wasvisibly shaken after US President Donald Trump publicly rejected Kiev’s portrayal of progress on a proposed peace plan with Russia, the New York Post reported on Tuesday.

Yermak was in the middle of an interview with the outlet whenTrump posted on Truth Social that he did not consider the proposal discussed in Geneva last week to be finalized. According to the report,Yermak had spent the previous 30 minutes portraying the document as a nearly completed== joint Trump-Zelensky roadmap that could be signed over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Western Europe facing ‘bleak future’ – Mearsheimer to Glenn Diesen

Western Europe faces a “bleak future” as a result of the Ukraine conflict, which was provoked by the West and the US in particular, according to American international relations expert John Mearsheimer.

In an interview with political scientist Glenn Diesen posted on Tuesday, Mearsheimer saidthe conflict had triggered major insecurity in Europe and had caused “huge problems” in relationsbetween Washington and Western Europe.

Cooperation across political, military, and economic issues has grown more difficult, according to Mearsheimer, who pointed to recent talks as evidence thatWestern Europeans are “battling against the United States on how to deal with Ukraine.”

Mearsheimer, who is a political science professor at the University of Chicago, claimedEurope is “in deep trouble” for two main reasons linked to the weakening American role on the continent, arguing it “is largely a function of the presence of a substantial US military force in Europe.”

The US and West European governments expanded NATO after the Cold War because they “wanted to put the American security umbrella over the heads of the East Europeans as well as the West Europeans,” he said.

Mearsheimer saidthis system is now under strain because of a “deep change in the distribution of power” in the international order. The US could easily maintain large troop deployments in Europe during the 1990s and early 2000s, he said,but the rise of multipolarity now pushed Washington “to pivot to Asia.”

The remarks echoed Mearsheimer’s address at the European Parliament earlier this month, wherehe said the unipolar era had ended with the emergence of China and Russia as major powers. “The US was no longer the only great power in the world,” he said in Brussels.

The shift gave Washington “further incentive to leave Europe and let Europe provide for its own security.”Mearsheimer warned the Ukraine conflict would likely be frozen rather than resolved, leaving “poisonous relations” between Western Europe and Russia and generating “lots of instability” in the region.

But that all changed Wednesday after a whirlwind week of shuttle diplomacy by President Donald Trump and his team.

For the first time, Kiev and Moscow articulated specific visions this week for a peace deal. And while they remain apart on big issues like land borders and NATO membership, the two sides have a meaningful framework that eluded past negotiations and presidents.

"I think it's a defining moment, and actually ratchets up the heat on both sides now to come to the table, now that they've basically put their cards on the table," Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., a co-founder of the War Powers Caucus in Congress, told the Just the the News, No Noise television show Wednesday evening.

He added: "If you've ever negotiated anything, and virtually everybody has, if you don't understand what you want and what the other side wants, you can never get to yes. It's always going to be a no. And so to see that, that now both sides have defined their interests and their goals, it allows President Trump to come in and set additional parameters time wise."

For those who know Trump, the relentless effort to get Ukraine and Russia to brush aside past failures and focus on the details is ripped right from his trademark book "The Art of the Deal."

"After this very strong first ten months in office, he [Trump] is seen as a credible broker by each side. They may not like him, but they respect him, and that's the important thing in this sort of process," former Deputy National Security Adviser Victoria Coates told Just The News on Wednesday.

Even the legacy media often the critics of Trump policy marveled at the breakthrough.

“The level of optimism projected by both the U.S. and Ukraine is staggering," Axios crowed hours after Ukraine agreed to its version of the framework.

Still, much difficult work remains, and all sides are realistic. But Trump willed the United States to this point by flashing a willingness to consider any idea that would jumpstart fresh talks.

His administration originally crafted a 28-point deal that has since been streamlined to 19 points, designed to bring the nearly four-year Russia-Ukraine war and 11-year conflict to an end. Crafted with contributions from key U.S. negotiators such as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the framework incorporates both concessions and benefits tailored to the interests of both Ukraine and Russia within the agreement.

The framework establishes reciprocal commitments, including Ukraine’s potential acknowledgment of Russian authority over certain Donbas territories (such as Donetsk), the removal of Western sanctions on Russia, a bilateral U.S.-Russia agreement for joint Arctic resource development, and the reallocation of approximately $100 billion in seized Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s postwar rebuilding.

In exchange, it offers Kyiv robust security assurances—among them U.S. financial backing for defense needs and automatic reimposition of sanctions in the event of future Russian aggression—along with a general amnesty covering actions during the conflict. Separately, European partners have put forward their own additions, such as NATO-like security pledges and the possible deployment of European troops, though these remain outside the main U.S.-drafted plan.

On Tuesday, Ukraine agreed to core terms of the refined 19-point peace framework, according to multiple U.S. officials, Ukraine's National Security Adviser Rustem Umerov, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This follows intensive U.S.-Ukraine talks in Geneva over the weekend, where revisions were made to address Kyiv's concerns, such as stronger security guarantees and fewer restrictions on Ukraine's military. Zelenskyy described the plan as now capturing the "essence" of a viable agreement and expressed readiness to discuss remaining "disputed points" directly with President Trump, potentially during a U.S. visit in the coming days. Umerov highlighted optimism for finalization soon, noting only "minor details" like enforcement mechanisms and asset reallocations remain outstanding.

Brussels is struggling to overcome Belgium’s resistance to its proposed ‘reparation loan’ meant to prop up Kiev’s finances

The EU will attempt to override opposition from Belgium and other statesin order to follow through on its threat to steal sovereign assets to fund Ukraine’s war-chest, the bloc’s top executive has said.

EU leaders want to issue a ‘reparation loan’ to Kiev by using Russian funds frozenin the West as collateral.However, Belgium, where the bulk of the holdings are kept by the privately owned Euroclear,has refused to greenlight the planunless other EU nations share the legal and financial risks of what Moscow has denounced as blatant theft.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyenreaffirmed the policy on Tuesday while pledging continued EU support for Kiev, even as Washington promotes a new peace initiativethat reportedly demands major concessions from Ukraine.

Europe, von der Leyen said, will “stand firmly by Ukraine” throughout any future discussions, adding that “a central point is the question of financing for Ukraine, including the use of the immobilized Russian sovereign assets.”

Politico previouslyreported that pro-Kiev officials in the bloc have floated a temporary “bridge loan,” taken out collectively by EU member states, which would keep Ukrainesolvent for several months. “We hope to be able to solve their hesitation,”one EU diplomat told the outlet. “We really do not see any other possible option than the reparations loan.” Another official said, “if we don’t move, others will move before us.” Both spoke on condition of anonymity.

Russian officials have accused Brussels of trying to prolong the conflict for domestic political gain and to justify soaring defense budgets that benefit European arms makers.

White House Press Secretary KarolineLeavittsuggested that critics of the US peace proposalare either misinformed or “pushing their own agenda,” adding that some “don’t want to see this war come to an end” and may be “profiting off of it.”

The initial version of the 28-point draft plan would reportedly require Ukraine to relinquish the parts of the new Russian regions in Donbass still under its control, freeze the front lines in Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, and cap the size of its army.

In a meeting with Ukrainian officials in Kiev last week, US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told his counterparts thattheir troops “faced a dire situation on the battlefield and would suffer an imminent defeat against Russian forces,” NBC reported, citing two sources.

The Russian military has been on the offensive in recent months in Donbass and elsewhere, with Ukrainian officials complaining of a lack of manpower.

Driscoll went on to say that Russia is increasing the scale and pace of its air attacks and can “fight on indefinitely,” andwarned that US industry cannot keep supplying weapons and air defenses at the required rate, NBC said.

“The message was basically – you are losing, and you need to accept the deal,” the network’s source said.

According to NBC, Kiev refused to sign the deal, which has since been amended. Several media reports also suggest that Driscoll held “secret talks” with the Russian delegation in Abu Dhabi on Monday and Tuesday.

NBC described the talks betweenDriscoll and Ukrainian officials as a sign of a long-running rift in the Trump administration between Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

WhileVance’s camp is seeking to push Kiev to compromiseand see it “as the primary obstacle to peace,”supporters of Rubio believe that the Ukraine conflict could be settled by pressuring Russia, the network said. Vance and Rubio have denied being at odds over Ukraine. (So Rubio a Russia hater, is the tie up? Why even say that now? Treachery!)

Russia has said it remains in contact with Washington and has received the broad outlines of the plan, but said it will not “engage in megaphone diplomacy,” which could jeopardize the peace efforts.

The US president has denied that his envoy has been “too pro-Russian”

US President Donald Trump has defended key Ukraine negotiator Steve Witkoff afterBloomberg claimed that it obtained a leaked phone call between Witkoff and a top Kremlin official.

On Tuesday, Bloomberg published what it described as a transcript of Witkoff’s conversation with Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov from October 14. Neither Russia nor the US has confirmed its authenticity.

Asked aboard Air Force Oneif Witkoff was “coaching” the Russians on how to deal with him, Trump said he was unaware of the alleged leak. He called Witkoff’s approach “standard,”adding that the envoy, a former real estate developer, had to “sell” terms to both Russia and Ukraine.

“That’s what a dealmaker does. You got to say, ‘Look, they want this – you got to convince them with this.’That’s a very standard form of negotiations,” Trump said.“I would imagine he’s saying the same thing to Ukraine. Each party has to give and take,” he added.

Asked if Witkoff was being “too pro-Russian,”Trump said no.

“Look, this war can go on for years. And Russia has got a lot more people, a lot more soldiers. If Ukraine can make a deal, it’s a good thing. I think it’s great for both,” he added.

Also on Tuesday, Bloomberg publishedwhat it claims is a transcript of a phone call between Ushakov and Russia’s investmentenvoy and Ukraine negotiator, Kirill Dmitriev.Dmitriev has said the transcript is fake. Russian officials previouslyaccused the Western media of spreading disinformation in an effort to undermine Trump’s mediation efforts.

US and Ukrainian negotiators met in Geneva over the weekend, after which Trump said his original 28-point peace plan was “fine-tuned”with additional input from both Russia and Ukraine.

Trump said on Tuesday that he directed Witkoff to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, while US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll would remain in contact with Ukrainian officials.

Ukrainians must work – Germany’s Merz

The German chancellor has promised to tighten the law on welfare payments

The employment rate among Ukrainian refugees living in Germany is unacceptably low, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said, vowing to overhaul the system of benefits.

Germany has been one of the primary destinations for Ukrainians since the conflict with Russia erupted in 2022, with an estimated 1.1 million residing in the country as of mid-November.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Confederation of German Employers’ Associations (BDA) on Tuesday, Merz saidmore Ukrainian nationals should seek employment.

“Germany has one of the lowest employment rates for Ukrainian refugeesin the entire European Union. Some countries have rates of 70% or 80%,while ours is still below 30%. This is unacceptable,” he said.

Merz argued that Ukrainians who can work should no longer rely on Burgergeld, or citizens’ allowance, which is normally reserved for German nationals.

In 2022, Germany passed a law makingUkrainians eligible for a basic allowance of €563 ($650) per month, along with housing assistance. But as the conflict has dragged on, thegovernment proposed reducing the monthly benefits to €441 for Ukrainians who arrive after April 1, 2025. The measure is expected to affect around 83,000 people, according to Focus.

Prominent critics ofbenefits for Ukrainiansinclude Markus Soeder, the minister-president of Bavaria, who has argued thatthey should not enjoy privileges that are not available to refugees from other countries.

Merz has also noted that military-age men have been fleeing Ukraine to avoid conscription, as Kiev struggles to replenish its battlefield losses. Earlier this month, he said heasked Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky to “ensure that these young men remain in their home country, where they are needed, and not in Germany.”

In neighboring Poland, another major destination for Ukrainians, President Karol Nawrocki has recently said that they should be stripped of preferential treatment.

The EU can no longer consider the US an ally after Washington submitted a draft peace plan directly to Kiev, thus sidelining the bloc, former EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has stated.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said Moscow is willing to discuss “specific wording” of a possible peace deal, but will not compromise on any of the core objectives that President Vladimir Putin outlined to Trump during their meeting in Alaska in August.

NATO state seeks missiles able to strike deep inside Russia

The Swedish military has claimed Moscow poses a direct threat

=Sweden needs long-range cruise missiles to strike deep inside countries it views as a threat, such as Russia, according to a Swedish Armed Forces report released on Monday. Moscow has rejected claims it has hostile intentions toward Western countries as baseless.

The document calls for investment in strike capabilities able to reach targets at a “strategic depth” of roughly 2,000 km.The straight-line distance between Moscow and Stockholm is just over 1,400 km.

In an interview to Reuters on Tuesday, Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson said that the country must “build a stronger deterrent” to Russia’s growing long-range capabilities. Last month,he warned that people living in European NATO states should prepare for a possible war with Russia.

Following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict,Sweden has given up neutrality and joined NATO. It has become one of Kiev’s most persistent backers, supplying artillery systems, anti-tank weapons, air-defense components, ammunition and training to Ukrainian forces. In June, it agreed to increase defense spending to match a new NATO target of 5% of GDP, up from the current 2.7%.

Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard has been very hawkish on Russia,but also criticized fellow NATO members for not providing enough aid to Ukraine, and forcing Nordic countries to take on a disproportionate share.

“The fact that the Nordic countries, with less than 30 million people, we provide for one-third of the military support that the NATO countries, with almost 1 billion people, provide this year … This is not sustainable. It’s not reasonable in any way. And it says a lot about what the Nordics do – but it says even more about what the others don’t do.” she said.

Earlier this month, defense officials from the Nordic and Baltic nations reportedly held tabletop drills in Norway that simulated a “possible armed conflict” or “military action against Russia on the northern flank,” according to media reports.

Russia has repeatedly dismissed allegations it has hostile intent toward Western nations and has voiced concern over the growing military activity near its borders, condemning what it describes as the West’s “reckless militarization.”

Russia no longer sees immigration as a way to offset falling birthratesand will not allow migrants to overstay their legal welcome, Aleksandr Grebenkin, deputy secretary of the country’s Security Council, has said.

In an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta released Tuesday, the senior official commented on Russia’s State Migration Policy for 2026-2030, approved in October. He said it prioritizes national security and economic developmentwhile focusing on combating illegal immigration and integrating foreigners who share traditional values.

“According to the new policy, the migration of foreign citizens to our country is no longer viewed as an auxiliary means of addressing demographic issues, but rather as an additional tool for implementing economic measures,” he stated. He explained that foreigners cannot expect permanent residence in Russia, except for certain categories, and must leave when their legal stay expires.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff and other officials involved in negotiations on resolving the Ukraine conflict will visit Moscow next week, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov has confirmed.

Ushakov, who advises President Vladimir Putin on foreign affairs, mentioned the trip in remarks on a Bloomberg report, which quoted what it claimed were leaked phone calls Ushakov held with Witkoff and senior Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev.

The Russian official told journalist Pavel Zarubin he does not comment on confidential communications, declining to either confirm or deny the authenticity of the transcripts.

Whoever leaked them apparently aims to harm Russian-US relations, Ushakov added, noting: “Somebody tapped, somebody leaked, but not us.”

Bloomberg claimed the purported discussion between Ushakov and Witkoff was the “genesis”of the 28-point US proposal on ending the Ukraine conflict, which was discussed with representatives from Kiev in Geneva last weekend.Supporters of Ukraine interpreted the transcripts as evidence that the plan was “Russian” and not American.

US President DonaldTrump brushed off the allegations, saying Witkoff was engaged in “standard” mediationseeking to “sell” some sort of a compromise to both sides of the hostilities. New book details tense moments between Melania and Donald Trump in White House

A book released on Tuesday reveals tense moments between then-President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump.

White House correspondent for the New York Times Katie Rogers discusses the modern role first ladies play in presidential administrations in American Woman: The Transformation of the Modern First Lady, from Hillary Clinton to Jill Biden.In the book, she dedicates one chapter to Melania Trump’s time in the White House. Despite Melania Trump’s continued public support of her husband, the book details several disagreements the couple had during their time in the White House, according to those close to the Trumps.

According to the book, the then-president disagreed with Melania Trump’s choice to wear a jacket with “I really don’t care. Do U?” printed on the back to a visit to a border detention center. Rogers said Melania Trump’s fashion choice irritated Donald Trump. Melania Trump and her press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, were called into his office, and Donald Trump yelled at them for the choice to wear the jacket.

Melania Trump also disagreed with the then-president’s handling of public crises. In 2017, after the white supremacist protest in Charlottesville, Virginia, turned into violence, Melania Trump differed her sentiment from her husband’s, who said the protest had “very fine people on both sides.” Melania Trump, in a rare public political statement, denounced the violence.

“Our country encourages freedom of speech, but let’s communicate w/o hate in our hearts. No good comes from violence,” Melania Trump said on then-Twitter.

Rogers also said Melania Trump distanced herself from her husband’s scandals, notably when news broke of his payment to Stormy Daniels to remain silent about a sexual encounter the two had prior to the 2016 election. Following the media attention on the scandal, Melania Trump canceled a trip abroad and flew to Mar-a-Lago without the president. In an interview with Rogers, Melania Trump’s press secretary said the move was intentional and was aimed to “humiliate” her husband a little.

“Grisham, who traveled with her on that jaunt, said that the First Lady had wanted to communicate her anger to the president,” Rogers wrote.

In the book, Rogers said broadcast news created a “house divided”; Melania Trump wanted to watch CNN, while Donald Trump wanted to watch Fox. In a 2018 incident aboard Air Force One, the book said Trump ordered all televisions aboard and televisions in individual hotel rooms upon arrival be tuned in to Fox News.

The Trumps also disagreed on decorations in the White House. While Melania Trump preferred a more modern aesthetic, Donald Trump preferred flashier pieces and replaced the pieces his wife picked for their residence. Despite her decor choices being changed, Melania Trump still tweeted at the time that she was positive about settling into living at the White House.

Russian negotiator on Ukraine denies phone call leak

Kirill Dmitriev has said the transcript of his supposed conversation published by the US media is false

Russia’s investment envoy and negotiator on Ukraine, Kirill Dmitriev, has said the transcript of his alleged phone call published by Bloomberg is false.

On Tuesday, Bloomberg claimed that it obtained a recording of Dmitriev’s short conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aide, Yury Ushakov, on October 29. The publication did not release the audio but posted the transcript in Russian and English.

Commenting on the story on X, Dmitriev wrote “fake.” He previously accused the Western media of spreading disinformation in an attempt to derail US President Donald Trump’s efforts to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine.

In Bloomberg’s transcript, a person labeled as ‘Dmitriev’ is shown saying he would “make this paper from our position” and “informally pass it along.”

Last week, the White House confirmed that it drafted a peace plan, which critics claim favors Russia. The EU has since presented a counterproposal, while US and Ukrainian officials met on Sunday to further discuss Trump’s draft.

The universe has terrible timing. It’s almost like it’s trolling us.

3I/ATLAS is out there throwing physics-defying tantrums, venting chemicals no one ordered, and casually lining up a trajectory that makes “accidental” look like a cosmic joke.

Meanwhile, half our major telescopes spent the week closed for weather, broken for maintenance, or pointing at something “more important” because the 2025 observing schedules were “finalized” last fiscal year.

You know, as if those schedules are carved on stone tablets by a bureaucratic Moses, too sacred to revise for something as trivial as the most controversial astrophysical event of the decade.

So, the strangest object ever detected is doing cartwheels across the sky, and professional astronomy basically responded with:

“Nice.” pause “We can schedule that in 12–14 months.”

It’s the cosmic equivalent of spotting a dragon over your backyard fence and Animal Control telling you, “We only handle dogs.”

This is what happens when reality throws a plot twist and our institutions are still flipping through the previous season’s script.

The Telescope Logjam

To be blunt, this isn’t a science problem. It’s a systems problem and it’s repeated everywhere: brilliant people, broken processes, and rigid schedules.

We have technology that can land a rover on Mars but can’t cope with a sudden change in plans. That’s like calling tech support for an outage and being told to “submit a ticket online,” while your internet’s the thing that’s down.

When the Universe Moves Fast and Institutions Don’t

Zoom out far enough and the pattern becomes embarrassingly obvious.

Our best scientific tools, like our healthcare system, our agencies, our bureaucracies, are stunningly capable right up until the moment you ask them to do something urgent.

Then suddenly someone needs:

a form

an approval

a budget meeting

a clear sky

or a year’s worth of planning they didn’t do

We’re watching the same thing play out in astronomy that plays out in policy, medicine, industry, and everything else:

The people are brilliant.

Their systems are brittle.

Meanwhile, There’s Hope

The universe relies on the people who actually show up, the proverbial 80/20 rule in action.

While the big facilities reshuffle their dance cards, the only reason we have recent images of 3I/ATLAS at all is because:

backyard astronomers

late-night sky watchers

Slooh members (thank you, Liena Dreams)

hobbyists

engineers with a telescope bolted to their garage

…refused to wait for permission. You can trace the entire November dataset to a handful of them who just pointed their telescopes at the sky because someone had to.

They’re the ones who caught the anti-tail, and noticed the brightening events. They document the coma evolving day by day. Institutions vacillated, but these people?

They didn’t. That’s not a scientific footnote — it’s a warning bell. Because when the most interesting object in the solar system appears and the system answers, “We’re booked,” the only ones watching are the people who never needed permission in the first place.
