Taiwan Accuses China Of Carrying Out ‘Provocative’ Military Patrol

TAIPEI, June 6 (Reuters) – Taiwan accused China on Friday of raising tensions in the region with a “provocative” military patrol involving warplanes and warships near the island, an unusual public rebuke in what are typically routine accounts of Chinese military activity.

Taiwan, which China views as its own territory, has complained of repeated Chinese military drills and patrols nearby. Since President Lai Ching-te took office last year China has held three major rounds of war games.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said that starting mid-afternoon Friday, it had detected 21 Chinese military aircraft, including J-16 fighters, operating with warships to carry out “so-called joint combat readiness patrols” and “harass the airspace and seas around us.”

“The Ministry of National Defence stresses that these acts are highly provocative, fail to pay proper attention to the maritime rights of other countries, bring anxiety and threat to the region, and blatantly undermine the status quo in the region,” it said.

Taiwan regularly reports such Chinese “combat patrols,” but does not generally attach such commentary to its statements.

China’s defense ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

COAST GUARD DRILLS

The patrol came one day after Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump spoke by telephone, with Xi telling Trump that the United States must “handle the Taiwan question with prudence.”

This is “so that the fringe separatists bent on ‘Taiwan independence’ will not be able to drag China and America into the dangerous terrain of confrontation and even conflict,” Xi said, according to a Chinese government read-out of the call.

China regularly calls Taiwan its most important and sensitive issue in relations with the United States, which is bound by law to provide the island with the means to defend itself.?

China says democratically governed Taiwan is its “sacred territory” – a position the government in Taipei strongly rejects – and that it has a right to carry out drills in Chinese territory.

Lai, who last month marked a year in office, is hated by Beijing, which calls him a separatist and has rebuffed his repeated offers for talks.

Lai says only Taiwan’s people can decide their future, and that the government is determined to ramp up defense spending and strengthen its military. China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.

On Sunday, Lai will attend drills in the southern city of Kaohsiung for Taiwan’s coast guard, whose ships would be pressed into service in combat roles in the event of war with China.

Israel Orders Military To Stop Gaza Bound Aid Ship

JERUSALEM, June 8 (Reuters) – Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz told the military on Sunday to stop a charity boat carrying activists including Sweden’s Greta Thunberg who are planning to defy an Israeli blockade and reach Gaza.

Operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), the British-flagged Madleen yacht set sail from Sicily on June 6 and is currently off the Egyptian coast, heading slowly towards the Gaza Strip, which is besieged by Israel.

“I instructed the IDF to act so that the Madleen … does not reach Gaza,” Katz said in a statement.

“To the antisemitic Greta and her Hamas-propaganda-spouting friends, I say clearly: You’d better turn back, because you will not reach Gaza.”

Climate activist Thunberg said she joined the Madleen crew to “challenge Israel’s illegal siege and escalating war crimes” in Gaza and highlight the urgent need for humanitarian aid. She has rejected previous Israeli accusations of antisemitism.

Israel went to war with Hamas in October 2023 after the Islamist militants launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killing more 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages back to the enclave, according to Israeli tallies.

More than 54,000 Palestinians have died during the ongoing Israeli assault, according to Gaza health authorities, with much of the Palestinian territory reduced to rubble. The U.N. has warned that most of Gaza’s 2.3 million population is at risk of famine.

Katz said the blockade was essential to Israel’s national security as it seeks to eliminate Hamas.

“The State of Israel will not allow anyone to break the naval blockade on Gaza, whose primary purpose is to prevent the transfer of weapons to Hamas,” he said.

The Madleen is carrying a symbolic quantity of aid, including rice and baby formula, the FFC has said.

FFC press officer Hay Sha Wiya said on Sunday the boat was currently some 160 nautical miles (296 km) from Gaza. “We are preparing for the possibility of interception,” she said.

Besides Thunberg, there are 11 other crew members aboard, including Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament.

Israeli media have reported that the military plans to intercept the yacht before it reaches Gaza and escort it to the Israeli port of Ashdod. The crew would then be deported.

In 2010, Israeli commandos killed 10 people when they boarded a Turkish ship, the Mavi Marmara, that was leading a small flotilla towards Gaza.

Israeli gov't overrides legal objections, approves acceleration of A-G's dismissal

The proposal is illegal and contradicts the High Court of Justice's legal precedent, Deputy Attorney-General Gil Limon wrote on Sunday morning.

The government approved in its weekly meeting on Sunday morning a proposal by Justice Minister Yariv Levin that will significantly speed up the process of firing Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not present during the discussion preceding the vote due to a conflict-of-interest agreement that bars him from taking part in any procedure that could affect his criminal trial. The attorney-general heads the state’s law enforcement apparatus and, as such, oversees the State Attorney’s Office, which is prosecuting Netanyahu.

Deputy Attorney-General Gil Limon wrote in an advisory opinion published prior to the government meeting that Levin’s proposal was illegal and contradicted High Court of Justice legal precedent. The government approved it, regardless.

Appointing, firing of A-G based on independent committee recommendation

A government decision in 2000 stipulated that the government appoint or fire the A-G based on recommendations by an independent appointment committee.

The committee is chaired by a retired Supreme Court judge appointed by the chief justice (currently Asher Grunis), and its other members are a lawyer chosen by the Israel Bar Association (Tammy Ulman), an academic appointed by university law school heads (Prof. Ron Shapira), a former justice minister or attorney-general appointed by the government, and a member of Knesset chosen by the Knesset Constitution Committee.

George Orwell's estate has been accused of censorship after a 'trigger warning' was added to his classic novel Nineteen Eighty Four.

The preface of the the 75th anniversary edition suggests Orwell's protagonist Winston Smith is 'problematic' and that readers may find his views on women 'despicable'.

The introductory essay was written by US novelist Dolen Perkins-Valdez and critics claim it risks undermining the revolutionary novel's warning against state control of thought.

Orwell's dystopian hyperbolic future is set under an authoritarian regime, where citizens are punished by the 'Thought Police' for subversive thoughts.

It follows Winston Smith and a minor bureaucrat who secretly rebels against the regime with Julia, a fellow party member.

But their doomed affair comes to an end and the hearts of readers are broken when they are arrested, tortured and brainwashed into betraying one another.

The novel has been hailed as one of the most influential pieces of literature of all time.

Now, the author's estate has been accused of ideological policing.

US writer Walter Kirn said on the podcast America this Week: 'We're getting someone to actually convict George Orwell himself of thought crime.

'We're not yet in a world where books and classic books are being excised or eliminated,' Kirn added, but warned the Orwell estate-approved edition of 1984 had been 'published with an apology for itself'.

The book already had a foreword written by American novelist Thomas Pynchon, leading Mr Kirn to question why a second was needed.

'These people felt they needed an introduction before the old white man's introduction. So this version of 1984 has a trigger warning!'

He called it 'the most 1984-ish thing I've ever f***ing read'.

Ms Perkins-Valdez wrote she was enjoying the novel until Winston revelas himself to be a 'problematic' character who 'disliked nearly all women, and especially the young and pretty ones.'

She added the novel doesn't address race and as a black woman she found it difficult to connect with the characters.

The anniversary edition of the 1949 classic is published by Berkley Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House.

Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss is vital to this whole story, because his "confession" is a key argument used in the Zionist-Revisionist Narrative for the Nuremberg Show Trials and for the entire Jewish Holocaust. In his 1983 book "Legions of Death", Rupert Butler quotes British Zionist Jew Bernard Clarke, who was the British Army sergeant famous for capturing Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Hoss on 11 March 1946 and then conducting his brutal torture. Butler's book quotes many written or recorded statements of Bernard Clarke.

Clarke bragged that he and his colleagues tortured Hoss for extended periods and almost beat him to death, but that a British medical officer intervened to prevent them from murdering Hoss. The "gas chambers" on view in Auschwitz today were built by the Russians AFTER WW2 but not built according to the official DIN Norms (established in 1917) that are standard for all German industry. Why is it that the organic apple must wear a label, pay a certification fee, and carry a price premium… while the conventional apple, grown with chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides, is simply called an apple?

What if we flipped that?

What if the organic apple was just an apple—and the one grown with chemical inputs had to be labeled chemically grown? Why does the burden fall on the farmer doing the right thing, while the one using harmful practices skates by without warning, cost, or consequence?

Why does the farmer who’s working with nature—protecting our water, preserving our soil, and nourishing our communities—have to pay extra, while the farmer who’s polluting gets to do so for free? Why is the financial burden on the one not doing the damage?

Our rules make it harder to farm responsibly. A chemical farmer can spray right up to the edge of their fence line, but an organic farmer must give up 25 feet on all sides—and sell that buffer zone as non-organic. How does that make any sense?

We claim to want cleaner food, cleaner water, and a healthier planet. But the regulations say otherwise. They punish the farmer doing what’s best for humanity and reward the one taking shortcuts that come with long-term consequences.

Meanwhile, foreign-owned corporations—some with deeply troubling records abroad—are seeking permission to be traded on U.S. stock exchanges. Others continue selling toxic chemical products in the U.S. that are banned in their own countries. Why are we opening our doors to this? Why do we reward bad actors while the honest, hardworking American farmer drowns in red tape?

The system is rigged. It pushes farmers toward chemical dependency—not because they want to—but because doing the right thing is cost-prohibitive and over-regulated.
