Veteran politicians are reportedly seeking favor in Washington following the Ukrainian leader’s recent missteps

Senior members of US President Donald Trump’s administration have engaged in back-channel communications with political rivals of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, Politico reported on Thursday, citing insider sources.

Zelensky, whose presidential term expired last year, has suspended elections due to martial law, and has refused to transfer presidential authority to the parliament speaker, contravening the constitution.

Undisclosed conversations with former Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko and former President Pyotr Poroshenko have revolved around restarting elections, according to three Ukrainian MPs and a Republican foreign policy expert who spoke anonymously to Politico.

Trump has characterized Zelensky as a “dictator without elections,” while members of his team have accused the Ukrainian leader of obstructing the US president’s peace agenda through his inflexibility. Some American officials have publicly called for Zelensky to step down after a contentious meeting at the White House last Friday.

Publicly, Timoshenko and Poroshenko back Zelensky’s leadership in the conflict with Russia. However, behind closed doors, Ukrainian political figures are reportedly positioning themselves to gain favor with Washington.

Timoshenko was serving a seven-year prison term for abuse of power when the 2014 armed coup in Kiev led to her early release. Last month, Zelensky imposed sanctions on Poroshenko, along with exiled opposition leader Viktor Medvedchuk.

On Tuesday, Zelensky expressed his commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict, lamenting that his meeting with Trump had not gone “the way it was supposed to.” Although Zelensky has not admitted to any doing anything wrong, the US president referenced his statement in an address to a joint session of Congress later that day.

Ahead of Trump’s speech, the Ukrainian parliament issued its own public message to the US president, commending his leadership and urging him to maintain “unwavering support” for Kiev. MP Nikita Poturaev, a hardline Zelensky supporter, denounced the conciliatory statement, highlighting the turmoil among Ukrainian lawmakers.

The Trump administration has halted arms supplies to Ukraine and ceased sharing military intelligence. While US European allies have pledged continued support for Kiev, they have also acknowledged that their capacity to assist is severely constrained without US backing. Russian forces already held an advantage in the conflict prior to these policy shifts from Washington.

NC Senate votes to ban Attorney General Jeff Jackson from suing Trump. Critics fear 'unchecked power'

Democratic Attorney General Jeff Jackson has recently sued over several of Republican President Donald Trump's executive orders, blocking attempts to undo birthright citizenship and slash funding for medical research, among other efforts.

The North Carolina Senate voted along party lines Wednesday to ban the state's attorney general from suing the president over any executive orders — a surprise vote announced only moments ahead of time.

The immediate effect of the Republican-backed bill, if it becomes law, would be to prevent Democratic Attorney General Jeff Jackson from suing Republican President Donald Trump again.

Jackson has recently sued over several of Trump's executive orders. Jackson and other state Democratic attorneys general have defeated the Trump administration in the early stages of those legal battles — winning court rulings that have blocked Trump's attempts to undo birthright citizenship and to slash grants for medical research that fund thousands of jobs in North Carolina, among other efforts.

"If a future executive order threatens North Carolina’s industries and jobs, where would the people of North Carolina turn to to find recourse?" asked Sen. Mujtaba Mohammed, D-Mecklenburg, during debate over the bill. "Should we just remain silent?"

GOP lawmakers say they dislike Jackson being allowed to use taxpayer dollars to sue Trump, accusing Jackson of using the lawsuits for his own political gain.

Wednesday's 28-17 vote approving the ban on future lawsuits isn't technically final yet. Democratic lawmakers, in an act of protest, used a procedural move to force the Senate to vote on it again next week. But that vote will largely be a formality, after which the bill will head to the state House.

Democrats said Wednesday that Republicans ought to remember when Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden enacted controversial executive orders of their own, it was Republican attorneys general who sued over those, just as Democratic attorneys general are suing Trump now. These kinds of lawsuits are a common and necessary check on the power of the presidency, in defense of states' rights, they said.

“Unchecked power, whether held by a Republican or a Democrat, is a threat to democracy," Mohammed said. "If you pass this bill today, this body risks setting a dangerous precedent that limits our state’s ability to push back against federal policies that undermine our industries, our economy, our rights and our values.”

Retaliation possible?

As the bill was winding its way through committees in February, Sen. Julie Mayfield, D-Buncombe, questioned what the legislature would do if Jackson simply ignored them and kept doing what he thought was necessary to represent the best interests of the state.

"The attorney general is an independently elected office," she said. "What happens if he ignores this? You can’t impeach him."

The lead sponsor of the bill Sen. Tim Moffitt, R-Henderson, said lawmakers could find ways to retaliate against Jackson — if it came to that — and might simply repeal every state law that gives the attorney general any powers or duties.

"Just zero it out," Moffitt said. "That way, the attorney general is just a feckless, empty shell who has no ability to do anything."

The legislature has also previously used the state budget to punish fellow politicians. When Stein was in his first year as attorney general in 2017, GOP lawmakers slashed his budget by millions of dollars in what was seen as retaliation for litigation Stein had filed against Trump during Trump's first term in office, as well as for Stein challenging some of the legislature's actions as unconstitutional.

The attorney general's office is widely seen as a stepping stone to more powerful positions such as governor or U.S. Senate. No Republican has won an election for attorney general in North Carolina since the 1800s, however.

And now, following Jackson's 2024 defeat of Republican Dan Bishop, top GOP legislators say the office has too much power and needs to be reigned in.

In December the legislature slashed a number of other powers of the AG's office, in a bill targeting Jackson as well as new Gov. Josh Stein and other Democrats who won electionto state offices in 2024. In part, they banned Jackson from arguing in court that anything the legislature does is unconstitutional.

President Donald Trump is expected to issue an executive order aimed at his long-held goal of abolishing the U.S. Department of Education, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The order might come as soon as Thursday, the newspaper said late Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter whom it did not name. The White House and the department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump repeatedly has called for eliminating the department, calling it a "big con job." He proposed shuttering it in his first term as president, but Congress did not act.

His fellow Republicans have long sought to chip away at its funding and influence, and his education secretary, Linda McMahon, who was confirmed by the Senate on Monday, has defended Trump's plan to abolish the agency.

The department's defenders say it is crucial to keeping public education standards high and accuse Republicans of trying to push for-profit education. An immediate closure could disrupt tens of billions of dollars in aid to K-12 schools and tuition assistance for college students.

Trump said last month he wanted the department to be closed immediately but acknowledged he would need buy-ins from Congress, which determines its funding, and teachers' unions.

McMahon told senators that unwinding the department would require congressional action and repeatedly promised the federal school funding appropriated by Congress to assist low-income school districts and students would continue.

Trump and his billionaire adviser Elon Musk have attempted to dismantle government programs and institutions such as the U.S. Agency for International Development without congressional approval, but abolishing the Department of Education would be his first shutdown of a cabinet-level agency.

The department oversees some 100,000 public and 34,000 private schools in the United States, although more than 85% of public school funding comes from state and local governments.

Instead, it provides federal grants for needy schools and programs, including money to pay teachers of children with special needs, fund arts programs and replace outdated infrastructure.

It also oversees the $1.6 trillion in student loans held by tens of millions of Americans who cannot afford to pay for university outright.

Under Trump's Democrat predecessor, Joe Biden, Republicans particularly criticized the department over student loan forgiveness and policies related to diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
