(Reuters) - A massive fire that recently tore through a Brooklyn warehouse destroyed documents from more than 1 million court cases, a New York state court official said Tuesday.

The fire on Jan. 31 ruined about 85,000 boxes of case files, said Ron Younkins, the state Office of Court Administration's executive director. Some of them predate the Civil War, while others were as recent as 2011, he said, adding that all the cases were closed.

The city has been threatened with at least one lawsuit stemming from the fire. Personal injury attorney Robert Vilensky said in court papers last month that he lost nearly 800 boxes of files he had stored in the warehouse. He claims the city's fire department may have been negligent in prematurely turning off the building's sprinkler system.

Vilensky said Tuesday that he also planned to file suit on behalf of other law firms who lost records, although he would not name them. He said lawyers were concerned about being sued by clients, since they are obligated to keep records for certain amounts of time.

The court records that were lost came from state Supreme Court and family courts in all five New York City boroughs.

Japanese Defense Ministry confirms flight by Chinese GJ-2 drone near Japan

Japan's Defense Ministry says it has detected China's GJ-2 drone in the skies around Japan for the first time.

The ministry says the reconnaissance-attack unmanned aerial vehicle flew over the East China Sea and passed between Okinawa's main island and Miyako Island headed for the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday.

The ministry says the drone then changed direction from southward to northeastward and reached an area east of the island of Amami Oshima.

It said the craft then turned around and retraced its path back toward China.

Ukrainian Air Force takes down key Russian command center near frontlines

Ukraine’s Air Force struck a residential building near the village of Kopani in Zaporizhzhya Oblast on Feb. 25, which Russian forces had been using as a command and observation post and a launch site for drones, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on Feb. 27.

The strike significantly reduced the operational capabilities of the 1429th Motorized Rifle Regiment, hampering its ability to terrorize civilians, the General Staff said.

Ukraine’s Air Force Command emphasized that attacks on Russian military targets will continue until all occupying forces are expelled from Ukrainian territory.

On Feb. 17, Ukrainian Air Force units successfully carried out a precision strike against positions held by the 2nd Motorized Rifle Battalion of Russia’s 64th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade near Chumatske in Zaporizhzhya Oblast.

Earlier, on Feb. 3, Ukraine’s General Staff reported that the Air Force had hit a Russian command post near Novoivanivka in Russia’s Kursk Oblast.

The strike caused extensive damage and led to significant casualties among Russian personnel, according to Ukrainian military officials.

On Feb. 13, another high-precision strike destroyed an enemy military facility near Yelyzavetivka in Kursk Oblast.

Prosecuted Romanian presidential candidate asks Trump for help

The US president should stop the assault on democracy launched by the Romanian “deep state,” Calin Georgescu has said

Calin Georgescu, the winner of the first round of last year’s annulled presidential election in Romania, has asked US President Donald Trump for help. The politician is facing criminal charges at home, which he has called part of a political persecution campaign against him.

“I definitely ask President Trump to take care about the situation,” Georgescu told an American blogger, Mario Nawfal, in an interview published on X on Thursday. On Wednesday, Georgescu was arrested by the police as he was about to file to run for the presidency again. He was released later the same day.

According to the Romanian authorities, Georgescu faces a total of six charges, including “anti-constitutional acts” and misreporting his finances. He was barred by a court order from leaving the country, appearing on TV, or posting anything on social media.

Speaking to Nawfal on Thursday, the politician denounced the criminal case against him as an assault on democracy that runs counter to the will of the Romanian people. Georgescu came out of ahead in the first round of the presidential election in November in a surprise victory. The Constitutional Court then annulled the results shortly before the second round of voting, citing “irregularities” in the politician’s campaign amid unproven claims of Russian interference in the electoral process.

According to Georgescu, the persecution campaign against him had “exposed” the Romanian “deep state” and its “corruption.” The politician claimed that Romania had been thrown back to the 1950s when it was ruled by a Communist regime.

“The deep state is so strong in this particular [kind] of activity,” Georgescu said, referring to his arrest on Wednesday. He also vowed to “fight for our freedom and for our democracy” and called on the US to support him in this fight.

According to Georgescu, the US should support him in order to preserve its own image as a beacon of democracy. If democracy is defeated “in one country” in a “coup d’etat” that would mean a failure for the US as well, the politician stated.

Washington has so far not commented on Georgescu’s appeal.US officials have previously criticized the actions of Bucharest for annulling the results of the November election.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference earlier this month, Vice President J.D. Vance suggested that some “old entrenched interests” in Romania were using “ugly, Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation” to secure their own interests and prevent a politician with “an alternative viewpoint” from coming to power.

Elon Musk slammed the politician’s arrest on Wednesday by calling the move “messed up.”

Georgescu is known for his skepticism towards Western influence over the country’s policies and criticizing both NATO and the EU. During his campaign, he also vowed to halt Romania’s military aid to Kiev if elected.
