Supreme Court OKs Multibillion Dollar Lawsuit Against Meta

The Supreme Court has cleared the way for a multibillion-dollar class-action lawsuit against Facebook parent company Meta, stemming from the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal.

After hearing arguments in November, the justices on Friday dismissed Meta’s appeal, effectively acknowledging that they should not have taken up the case initially. This decision leaves a lower court ruling in place allowing the lawsuit to proceed.

The investors behind the lawsuit allege that Meta failed to adequately disclose the risks that Facebook users’ personal information could be misused by Cambridge Analytica, a data firm involved in Donald Trump’s successful 2016 presidential campaign.

The investors argue that these inadequate disclosures contributed to two significant drops in Meta’s stock price in 2018, as the public became aware of the full scope of the privacy scandal, the Associated Press reported.

Meta spokesman Andy Stone said the court’s action disappointed the company. “The plaintiff’s claims are baseless and we will continue to defend ourselves as this case is considered by the District Court,” Stone said in an emailed statement.

The company has already paid a $5.1 billion fine and settled a $725 million privacy claim with Facebook users.

Cambridge Analytica, which had connections to Trump political strategist Steve Bannon, paid a Facebook app developer for access to the personal data of approximately 87 million Facebook users. This information was then utilized to target U.S. voters during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The Meta lawsuit is one of two class-action cases involving tech companies currently before the Supreme Court. The justices are also deliberating whether to allow a class-action suit against Nvidia to proceed. Investors in that case allege the company misled them about its reliance on selling computer chips for the mining of volatile cryptocurrencies, the AP added.

According to reports from 2018 to 2019, Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign offered the same tools and access to Facebook user data as the Trump campaign. Many reports said the Clinton campaign turned down the offer.

But in March 2018, Fox News reported that “Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign may have harvested the Facebook data of millions of people using an app that asked them to pair their Facebook friends list with their smartphone’s contacts list – in a bid to reach those people and persuade them to vote for Clinton.”

The Clinton campaign introduced a mobile application called “Hillary 2016,” which circumvented restrictions on gathering information from users’ friends without their consent, Fox noted.

The campaign’s use of big data has drawn scrutiny, especially in light of the controversy surrounding Cambridge Analytica—a data-focused firm linked to the Trump campaign accused of harvesting Facebook data to target potential voters.

Clinton campaign officials denied any wrongdoing at the time, Fox noted.

Facebook banned the practice of accessing users’ friends lists in 2014, after former President Barack Obama’s campaign utilized the method to obtain data on millions of potential voters.

However, the Clinton campaign’s “Hillary 2016” app exploited a special iPhone and Facebook integration, prompting users to sync their Facebook friends list with their phone contacts and grant the campaign access to that information, Fox continued.

Individuals who didn’t download the app had no way to prevent their friends from linking their phone numbers to their Facebook accounts if those friends opted to do so.

After syncing their friends list with the app, users were prompted to swipe through their Facebook friends and exclude those they believed would never vote for Clinton. The remaining friends were then sorted by location, allowing users to send pre-written text messages encouraging them to support Clinton through various suggested methods, Fox noted further.

We can give you an example of a current event that has just occurred in an election. This election was very polarized. The citizens of the country had very strong opinions about the outcome of this election. What most citizens did not realize, when they used their energy to focus on the one they did not want, the one they disliked, they were giving or feeding their energy to that candidate as their energy/vote. What you focus on you create. It seems this candidate understands energy manipulations. They understand it doesn’t matter if is negative or positive energy, it is energy and they wanted the energy. So this negative focused energy by the collective minds tipped the scale and the candidate they opposed won the election.

You can become aware and selective of where you place your focus. Because that is what you are spending your energy in creation. Worry is using your energy thoughts on the things you do not want to happen.

When you are worried about a loved one, safety, health, behavior or addictions you are adding to their situation in a negative manner. The best way to support them is to see them doing well, recovering, and being safe. See them at their best, laughing, calling you with good news. They feel your energy and it supports their well being and healing. When you worry they feel that negative vibration directed toward them as well.

It is important to be selective and shift your focus to the things that you desire to create. The things that enrich your life and raise your vibrations. This is where the focus of intention is most powerful. When you state an intention your mental focused energy is sending a message to the quantum field, this invisible field will respond and answer that intention. When you can state an intention and keep your energy focused it will manifest in your reality or life. You become the creator of what you experience and what you desire. Or you create the very reality that you are worried about.

Politico calls for Biden to issue commutation of Hunter Biden sentence in act of presidential 'mercy'

"Particularly in the wake of Trump’s victory, Biden is on strong ground — at a minimum — to commute any sentence of imprisonment for his son Hunter before he leaves office."

Politico argued on Monday that President Joe Biden should swiftly issue a commutation for his son Hunter Biden because Republicans “pressured” the Department of Justice to prosecute the younger Biden and that doing so would be an important act of "mercy."

Ankush Khardori, a senior writer at the outlet, made the argument for Biden to commute his son’s sentence, saying that it would be “an important show of mercy" as Biden is leaving office.

“Thanks to President Joe Biden’s Justice Department, Donald Trump is headed to the White House, and his son Hunter might be headed to prison. And believe it or not, the drama will intensify shortly,” Khardori wrote.

“In a matter of weeks, the younger Biden is set to be sentenced in two different criminal courts. On Dec. 12, he will appear in federal court in Delaware, where he was convicted over the summer of buying a gun in 2018 while addicted to drugs. Several days later, he is set to appear before a federal judge in Los Angeles for sentencing on tax fraud charges, which he pleaded guilty to in September just as a trial was about to get underway.”

The Politico writer noted that people are still wondering if “Biden will pardon his son,” adding, “The question raises a host of considerations — legal, political, practical and historic — that cannot be easily disentangled or reconciled. But, in the end, should he do it?”

Khardori argued that Biden is “on strong ground — at a minimum — to commute any sentence of imprisonment for his son Hunter before he leaves office. Not a pardon exactly, but an important show of mercy.” He added that this would spare Hunter “potentially years behind bars and avoid further pain for the Biden family.”

On Sept. 5, 2024, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, speaking for Biden, said the president would neither pardon Hunter nor commute his sentence. She was asked if Hunter changing his plea to guilty would affect how the president felt about the case.

The press secretary responded, “no comment” to that query but said, “It’s no, it’s still no,” when asked if Biden would issue a pardon for his son.

“Can you comment on whether a commutation would be on or off the table?” another reporter asked. “That's also no,” Jean-Pierre said, adding that she didn’t “have anything to say” about whether Hunter’s ongoing judicial battle had anything to do with his father’s decision not to run for a second term as president. Hunter Biden had pleaded guilty in a Los Angeles court that day to nine tax evasion charges, three of which were felonies.
