Confidential banking records related to Hunter Biden in Senate hands

The U.S. Treasury Department has started turning over confidential banking records related to Hunter Biden in response to requests from Senate investigative committees.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Ron Johnson asked the Treasury in November for “suspicious activity reports,” banking alerts involving money laundering or fraud, related to Biden and his associates.

A spokeswoman for Sen. Ron Wyden, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, told Yahoo News that the department has already started turning over records. The Wyden spokeswoman criticized the Treasury Department for “rapidly complying” with the requests, calling the Republican-led Senate investigation of Biden a “sideshow.”

“Applying a blatant double standard, Trump administration agencies like the Treasury Department are rapidly complying with Senate Republican requests — no subpoenas necessary — and producing ‘evidence’ of questionable origin,” said Wyden spokeswoman Ashley Schapitl.

A spokesman for Grassley said he could not elaborate on what the records contained at this time but criticized Democrats for “recklessly” seeking to interfere with the investigation.

“As a matter of routine, we don’t discuss sensitive third-party material during ongoing investigations. It’s unfortunate that Democrats whom we’ve kept in the loop on our investigations would recklessly seek to interfere with legitimate government oversight,” Grassley’s spokesman, Taylor Foy, told the Washington Examiner.

Grassley’s and Johnson’s committees have been investigating whether the Obama administration took official action to help the business interests of Biden while his father, Joe Biden, was vice president. The Republican senators asked the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network for suspicious activity reports involving Hunter Biden, his business partner Devon Archer, their firm, Rosemont Seneca Partners, the Ukrainian oil company Burisma Holdings, and other related companies and individuals. In the letter, they asked the department to turn over the records by Dec. 5, 2019.

Banks and financial institutions are required to file “suspicious activity reports” when they notice unusual transactions that could indicate illegal activities such as money laundering, financing of terrorism, or fraud.

A spokesperson for Johnson did not respond to a request for comment. On Wednesday, Grassley and Johnson also requested Hunter Biden’s official travel records from the U.S. Secret Service.

Biden held a private ceremony for her, and he described as "a leader of utmost character."

"She has carved an inspiring legacy that endures in her incredible family, the countless lives she has made better, and a nation seeking the light of equality, justice, and freedom," Biden said, The Hill reported.

"Today, I had the honor of awarding Cecile Richards the Presidential Medal of Freedom. With absolute courage, she fearlessly leads us forward to be the America we say we are — a nation of freedom. The medal of freedom is the highest civilian award in the U.S. and recognizes people who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors."

Cecile Richards is the daughter of Ann Richards, the first woman to be elected governor of Texas and who served from 1991-1995.

The last time Donald Trump won the presidency, we were alarmed by the prospect that he’d file frivolous defamation suits and insult journalists from the White House podium. Those fears almost seem quaint now — the lawsuits and verbal attacks haven’t ended, but there is so much more at stake in Trump’s second term.

Since his first term ended, Trump has repeatedly called for journalists to be imprisoned and raped for not revealing their sources. Just days ago, he publicly fantasized about a mass shooting of journalists at one of his rallies. He wants to sic federal agencies from the Federal Election Commission to the Federal Communications Commission to the Department of Justice on his perceived enemies, including reporters he doesn’t like.

In his second term, Trump will make good on these anti-press threats to try to destroy any news outlet, journalist, or whistleblower who criticizes or opposes him.

Trump will almost certainly repeal protections against federal surveillance of journalists, which were prompted by his spying on them last time around (to be fair, so did his predecessor). He may even take advantage of the opening created by the case he started and the Biden administration finished — the prosecution of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange — to prosecute journalists directly for publishing classified information.

Republicans are already seeking to abuse anti-terrorism laws against media outlets that criticize Israel; it’s hard to imagine Trump reining them in. He’s certainly not going to lift a finger to protect Palestinian journalists from getting killed while reporting on the war. Who knows how he’ll respond if Russia or other authoritarian regimes he wants to be buddies with imprison more American journalists?

Just like his last term, Trump is likely to try to censor social media outlets and interfere with the editorial discretion of publishers. His campaign against free speech online will be even worse this time around, especially if he gives the world’s biggest free speech hypocrite, Elon Musk, a prominent role in his administration.

At the local level, Trump’s anti-press rhetoric has already emboldened everyone from governors to county-level politicians to retaliate against the media. With their leader back in the White House, Trump wannabes nationwide will feel even more empowered to harass the press — and they’ve spent Trump’s years in exile priming their base to tolerate it.

Suffice it to say, we’ve got some hard work ahead of us at Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF). But we’ve been here before. Biden-Harris DHS to Funnel 65K More Foreign Workers into Blue-Collar Jobs

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will funnel an additional 65,000 H-2B foreign visa workers into blue-collar jobs, even as Americans continue losing out in the labor market to an increasing flow of migrant workers.

DHS and the Labor Department made the announcement soon after the presidential election, noting that the agency will allow businesses to import 65,000 additional H-2B foreign visa workers to take jobs in construction, meatpacking, landscaping, and other industries.

Already, businesses are allowed to import 66,000 H-2B foreign visa workers to take blue-collar, nonagricultural American jobs annually though that cap is routinely expanded by presidential administrations.

In his announcement, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas admitted that importing more foreign workers for American jobs is meant to deter U.S. wage increases and thus “keeping prices down.”

“By maximizing the use of the H-2B visa program, the Department of Homeland Security is helping to ensure the labor needs of American businesses are met, keeping prices down for consumers while strengthening worker protections and deterring irregular migration to the United States,” Mayorkas said.

Specifically, 20,000 of the 65,000 H-2B visas will go to Guatemalans, El Salvadorans, Hondurans, Haitians, Colombians, Ecuadorians, or Costa Ricans while the other 45,000 visas will go to foreign workers who previously arrived in the U.S. on H-2Bs.

As Breitbart News has chronicled for years, the H-2B visa program is fraught with abuse.

The expansion of foreign workers into the labor market comes even as Bureau of Labor Statistics data continuously shows that native-born Americans are falling out of the workplace and the overwhelming majority of new jobs are going to newly arrived migrants.

In the last year, for example, native-born Americans have lost nearly 800,000 jobs while foreign-born workers have secured more than a million jobs.

Similarly, native-born Americans continue to have fewer jobs today than they did before the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, indicating that all net job growth has gone to foreign-born workers.
