Germany suspects sabotage after damage to undersea cables

Infrastructure operators have reported two incidents, affecting several NATO states

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday that the rupture of two internet cables under the Baltic Sea, connecting NATO member states, appears to be a coordinated act of sabotage.

Infrastructure operators reported the severing of two separate lines on Sunday and Monday. Over the past year, several similar incidents have occurred in the area. In one such case, Finland and Estonia were quick to point the finger at Russia – only to discover later that a Chinese cargo ship’s anchor had caused the breakage.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an EU ministerial meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, Pistorius referred to the latest incidents, saying: “No one believes that these cables were severed by accident.”

According to Pistorius, “with this in mind, we have to state – not knowing exactly who is behind it – that we’re talking about a hybrid” attack. The German defense minister added that there was a “clear indication that something is going on here.”

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, along with her Finnish colleague Elina Valtonen, stated that “the fact that such an incident immediately raises the suspicion of deliberate damage speaks volumes about the instability of our time.”

Cinia, a Finnish state-owned data services provider, reported the breakage of its C-Lion1 on Monday evening. The line spans some 1,173-kilometers (729 miles), connecting the Finnish capital, Helsinki, to the German city of Rostock. According to the infrastructure operator, the damaged section is situated in Swedish waters, away from the main maritime routes in the area. Cinia’s representatives said they suspected anchor-related damage. A spokesperson told reporters: “at the moment, there isn’t a possibility to assess the reason for the cable break.”

The C-Lion1 runs close to the now-defunct Russian Nord Stream gas pipelines, which were put out of operation by several underwater explosions in September 2022. While the Western media has claimed a group of Ukrainian desperados pulled off the act of sabotage, Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have pointed the finger at the US.

On Sunday, another underwater cable – the BCS East-West-Interlink, which connects Lithuania to Sweden – was also reported to have been seriously damaged. The cause has not been identified.

Last Monday, Nikolay Patrushev, who previously led Russia’s Security Council and is currently an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, alleged that the US and UK were considering attacks on “infrastructure facilities, including undersea fiber optic cables.”

Mike Rogers, Who Wants to be FBI Director, Wanted to Keep Russia Hoax Docs Secret.

Former Representative Mike Rogers (R-MI), seen as one of the contenders to head President-elect Donald J. Trump’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), argued that documents related to the 2016 Russia hoax should be kept secret. Rogers, a former FBI special agent, told NPR in February 2018 that he did not believe the Nunes Memo should have been released to the public.

The Nunes Memo, created for =then-House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes, criticized the FBI for using politically motivated and unreliable sources as part of the Russia hoax investigation against Trump. Part of this was the infamous Steele Dossier, created by disgraced former British spy Christopher Steele, which was used as a basis for Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants against Trump ally Carter Page.

Speaking to NPR, Rogers argued that anything related to FISA warrants should be handled in a “classified setting.” Additionally, Rogers contended: “[R]eleasing it at the angst of all of the intelligence community and the FBI, I argue, is probably not the best way for the public to figure out what in the heck is going on.”Rogers, who lost his Senate election bid in Michigan earlier this month, met with the Trump transition team last week in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. Some believe he is being considered to head the FBI.

His main rival for the position is former Director of National Intelligence adviser Kash Patel, a Trump loyalist and major critic of the people in politics and media who spread the Russia collusion hoax. At least one former FBI hatchet man has expressed concern about Patel replacing current FBI director Christopher Wray, claiming Patel may do “massive damage” to the agency’s “interior.”

Russian parliament passes legislation banning “childless lifestyle” propaganda

Russia's State Duma has passed legislation banning the promotion of a "childless lifestyle" across all forms of media in the country.

In September, Elvira Aitkulova, a senior member of the education committee of the State Duma, along with other representatives, drafted legislation that would ban pro-abortion and anti-family propaganda across multiple platforms, including online, in films, advertisements and media. The legislation seeks to combat the encouragement of childlessness, particularly among young people.

"The bill concerns propaganda – the targeted dissemination of information to promote a lifestyle without family and children," Aitkulova said in September. "It is not about the right of individuals to make personal choices, but about efforts to convince others, especially minors, that a childless life is superior."

Individuals found guilty of promoting "child-free propaganda" could face fines of up to 400,000 rubles ($4,290). Meanwhile, government officials could be fined as much as 800,000 rubles ($8,580) and corporations as high as five million rubles ($53,600).

This law, according to the government, seeks to boost the traditional family values and low birth rate in Russia which currently stands at 1.49 children per woman, far below the replacement rate of 2.1 needed to sustain the population levels. If this trend continues, the United Nations and other organizations suggest that the country's population could decline dramatically in the coming decades, with some estimates predicting a halving by 2100.

The Duma passed the legislation on Nov. 12.

"Everything needs to be done to make sure that new generations of Russians grow up with a focus on traditional family values," Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said right after the law was rubber stamped in the lower house of the Russian parliament.

Legislation also protects Russian children from countries that allow gender transition

The legislation also includes measures restricting the international adoption of Russian children to countries that endorse gender reassignment procedures or allow changes to official documents based on gender identity.

"The most dangerous thing in this situation is that the state can control the absence of a gender change in potential adoptive parents only at the time of adoption on the territory of the Russian Federation," the lawmakers wrote in the explanatory notes of the bill.

"And, therefore, a foreign citizen who has adopted a child who is a citizen of Russia, after returning to the territory of the state of his citizenship, can already change the gender, but the worst thing is that he can change the gender of the adopted child, for example, by starting to use hormone replacement therapy, which is unacceptable."

The provision aims to safeguard children from exposure to ideologies incompatible with the family values of Russia.

"It is extremely important to prevent any encroachment on the possible change of gender by any means in case of adoptions to other countries," said Volodin. Parliament Deputy Speaker Irina Yarovaya echoed a similar statement. "The issue is not that Russia's moral compass and moral foundations aim to protect traditional values and understanding of marriage as the union of man and woman, but it’s the direct protection of a child's life."

The legislation still needs to pass two more readings in the Duma before being sent to the upper house and then to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At Least Five Killed as Israel Attacks Religious Site in Central Beirut

Densely populated neighborhood has absorbed a lot of displaced people

Israel is continuing to increase airstrikes against various neighborhoods of the Lebanese capital city of Beirut. Today, those strikes centered on the densely populated working-class quarter of Zoa al-Blat. This attack hit near al-Zahra Husseini a, a Shi’ite religious site.

The attack occurred late in the afternoon, and the Lebanese Health Ministry puts the current toll at five killed and 24 injured. The attack hit a residential apartment building behind the Husseiniya, causing substantial damage to the immediate area. Rescue efforts are still underway.

Associated Press to cut 8% of its staff amid fast-changing media marketplace

The Associated Press, the news wire service used by media outlets around the country and around the world, announced this week that it would cut 8% of its staff as it navigates buyouts and a changing media landscape.

AP CEO Daisy Veerasingham informed staff of the layoffs on Monday, saying the cuts are part of an adjustment to a time of transformation in the media sector. Several major U.S. news organizations, including Gannett and McClatchy, have announced in recent months that they would no longer use Associated Press content.

“Our customers — both who they are and what they need from us — are changing rapidly,” Ms. Veerasingham told staff. “This is why we’ve focused on delivering a digital-first news report. We now need to accelerate on this path.”

AP, which is technically a news cooperative that licenses its news coverage to member organizations, including The Washington Times, retains just under 3,300 employees, meaning the cuts will impact around 264 staffers.

However, Ms. Veerasingham said the cuts would not seriously hurt the service’s journalism, with fewer than half of the cuts affecting AP’s newsroom. Ms. Veerasingham said AP would extend voluntary separation agreements to eligible employees based on length of service and department.

The AP’s cuts come amid similar layoffs at media companies this year. Publications large and small have announced significant cuts or closures as advertising revenue dries up and readers remain reluctant to pay for news subscriptions.
