RCMP arrest Ontario man for alleged threats against Trudeau

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police charged an Ontario man for allegedly uttering threats against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in an online video.

According to RCMP, the 33-year-old man allegedly “posted an on-line video making violent threats towards the Prime Minister, the Police and any security personnel who might attempt to interfere with his plans.”

RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team in the Greater Toronto Area opened an investigation after becoming aware of the alleged threats.

Once identified, Dawid Zalewski, 33, of no fixed address was taken into custody and charged with two counts of uttering threats.

“The RCMP GTA INSET and York Regional Police were able to swiftly locate and arrest this individual, resulting in the reduced risk to the Prime Minister, other police officers, and to the public. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has jumped to the defence of a Toronto police officer featured in a viral video where she gave the middle finger to a civilian, describing the interaction as “harassment.”

Speaking at an unrelated news conference Wednesday morning, Ford emphasized that people should support the police instead of harassing them.

“Let’s support our police. Let’s thank them rather than getting Google glasses and trying to harass our police. That’s what I call it — harassment,” said Ford. “Why don’t you say thank you, shake their hands and keep going. And by the way, next time you’re at a coffee shop, I’ll run in and buy you a coffee.”

The video was originally posted to TikTok in three parts, with over 800,000 cumulative views as of Wednesday morning. The first part alone has over half a million views.

The three videos were filmed from different angles using various devices, with the footage seemingly being recorded with a phone, glasses camera, and a bodycam.

In the video, a man approaches two Toronto police officers and confronts them for parking illegally to get their coffee.

“I get where you’re coming from. But, at the end of the day, we work 11 hours. We need caffeine,” said the female officer before asking whether he preferred that they park on the sidewalk.

The three argued for a while before the third part of the series of videos cut to a new location, where the man was arguing with the police, who were now in their vehicle.

“We’re doing our job, bro,” said the female police officer.

“I’m not your bro. It’s a green light. You guys just missed the whole light cycle,” said the man recording.

No more words were exchanged, but the female police officer appeared to give the man recording the middle finger immediately before the video ended. Continue…

Liberal MP Anita Vandenbeld has penned a lengthy screed blaming the rise of the “far-right” and claiming she doesn’t feel safe after two survivors of abuse stormed out of a committee meeting in tears when the Liberals derailed their testimonies.

Vandenbeld is one of eleven MPs on the House of Commons status of women committee which met for a summer session last week that descended into chaos.

In an over 2,500-word op-ed published to the news aggregator National Newswatch, Vandenbeld claimed she was the one targeted with abuse as a result of the incident and went on to blame the far-right and populism.

“The traps that are being set by the far-right, their willingness to use anyone’s pain to achieve political ends, and a capitulation by the media to click-bait have made it impossible to protect and defend parliamentary processes or basic fairness,” wrote Vandenbeld.

In 2023, the Niger military junta overthrew the democratically elected president. This coup led to the deterioration of relations between Niger and its Western allies, including the United States.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its first-ever “mega earthquake caution” on Thursday, following a magnitude 7.1 temblor that struck earlier in the day off the coast of Kyushu, the country’s third largest island. There were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.

The quake occurred at around 4:43 pm local time (07:43 GMT) off the coast of the Miyazaki prefecture of Kyushu, at a depth of about 18 miles, triggering tsunami advisories, the JMA said.

Seismologists reportedly held an emergency meeting to analyze whether the quake had impacted the nearby Nankai Trough, where it has long been feared that a massive earthquake could cause hundreds of thousands of deaths. Large earthquakes have taken place every 100 to 150 years in central and western parts of Japan, the agency said.

According to Japan Forward, the government predicts a megaquake at the Nankai Trough within the next 30 years with 70-80% probability.

“Big city mayors” are calling on the federal and provincial governments to provide a concrete action plan to tackle the rising homelessness, drug addiction and overdose crisis facing many cities across the country.

The coalition of Ontario Mayor’s launched its “Solve the Crisis” campaign Wednesday. The mayors are asking for funding from other levels of government for a five-pronged plan they believe will help alleviate the “humanitarian crisis” facing their cities.

Mayors from 30 different cities with a population greater than 100,000 make up the organization.

“There is no reason why anyone should be dying in the streets of this country, given the wealth and the resources and the expertise that we have,” Marianne Meed Ward, OBCM’s chair and the mayor of Burlington, said in Toronto Thursday. “The crisis is growing, and it impacts every single municipality across our province, large and small, rural and urban. It affects our residents, our businesses, and our local governments, and we need solutions now.”

The mayors say they are grateful for the “piecemeal” funding announcements they receive from the other levels of government but that it’s insufficient for the scope of the problem. They are asking for a consistent, fixed and certain amount municipalities can use for various social programs and housing they believe are necessary to tackle the crisis.

They are asking for the province to appoint one minister with enough power and authority to be the single point of contact for all the ministries involved in tackling the issue.

Meed Ward said that having a single minister in charge of crises would be more efficient than having multiple ministers with intersecting responsibilities in the “spectrum of issues.” Continue…

Text messages recently surfaced from Boissonault’s former business partner Stephen Anderson which repeatedly refer to someone named “Randy” in a 2022 Global Health Imports business deal, the company he co-founded with Anderson.

Being legally required to step down as partner when he took office in 2021, Boissonnault remained a 50% shareholder in the company until recently, as Ministers are permitted to own stakes in private companies.

However, the latest string of text messages were from 2022, making it increasingly difficult for the Edmonton Centre MP to distance himself from the company which he claimed to have left upon being elected.

Ethics Commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein wrote a letter to Boissonnault on Wednesday saying he was “concerned” about new text messages.

A freedom of information request by CTV News found that police spent an extra $44,555 on security-related overtime during the brief visit.

The authorities published photos of the woman’s car trunk filled with numerous bundles of euro banknotes. According to BEB, the seized sum amounted to €4.7 million ($5.13 million). Searches were also conducted at the firm’s premises and in the apartments of some of its staff members.

Bahabelom Baraki, age 29, Biniam Gebremichael, age 29, and Kokob Nguse, age 26, have been charged by police with tobacco trafficking, fraud over $5,000, possession for the purpose of weapons trafficking, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. The three owners are also facing six charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The individual, a man in his fifties, was arrested this spring following an investigation that began at least two years ago.

Swiss authorities, after monitoring his frequent travels to China where he worked as an environmental consultant, suspected him of conducting political, economic, and military intelligence on behalf of the Chinese government.

The investigation, launched by the Swiss Attorney General’s office on March 14, 2023, remains ongoing.

Swiss authorities have not released the name of the individual, and no formal charges have been announced.

The Swiss Attorney General’s office emphasized the importance of maintaining secrecy in espionage investigations.

Last year multiple Canadian bureaucrats were stripped of their security clearances after allegedly spying on behalf of foreign powers.

Early Wednesday morning, the Victoria police arrested a man who smashed the front door of a restaurant with a rock. He was arrested and released on bail, with the condition that he would not return to the business. About six hours later, on the same day, the police responded to a report of a smoke grenade being thrown inside the same restaurant.

“Through the investigation, officers believed the same suspect was responsible for both offences. As a result, he was located and arrested a second time, in the 2900-Block of Douglas Street just after 9:15 a.m. this morning. Canada’s economy lost a net 2,800 jobs last month and the country’s unemployment rate remained at a 30-month high of 6.4%, largely due to low labour participation and rapid population growth.

While analysts had predicted the unemployment rate to increase from 6.3% to 6.5% in June, due to Canada’s population growth outpacing the job market, they also forecast a net gain of 22,500 new jobs, however, that was not the case.

Excluding the pandemic, the participation rate of Canada’s labour force dropped to a 26-year low of 65% last month, reflecting that a large cohort of people in Canada are not looking for work.

Protesters from “Occupy UofT” helped stage a “sit-in” style protest at 777 Bay St. at College Park in Toronto, an office building which houses the university’s Asset Management Corporation’s offices, to “raise awareness” of the university’s alleged financial backing of the Israeli military.

The protest group shared on Instagram that they were involved in the sit-in, which began at 12:30 a.m. on Thursday in the lobby outside the elevators of the UofT offices. Within 20 minutes, “dozens” of police assembled inside the building, according to the protesters.

Canada on track to surpass 500K new permanent residents this year

Following two months of immigration growth, Canada saw its number of new permanent residents soften by 4.9% in June, according to data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

A total of 34,870 new permanent residents came to Canada in March and 42,595 foreign nationals were granted permanent residency in April.

Permanent residents grew by another 46,835 in May before June saw monthly immigration dip slightly, with the total number of new permanent residents dropping to 44,540.

According to the IRCC data, the total number of new permanent residents in Canada could reach 511,410 by 2024, should the trend continue until the end of this year.

That would mean an 8.4% increase in new permanent residents than last year, which saw Canada bring in 471,815, a record-breaking year for the country’s immigration levels.

The projections would also indicate that Canada will receive 5.4% more than what the Trudeau government has said it would, exceeding its target of 485,000 under the Liberals’ 2024-26 Immigration Levels Plan.

The total number could even surpass the previous 500,000 targets for next year and 2026. Continue…

The decision was justified by the fact that the radiation from X-ray, CT and MRI scans can be harmful to unborn babies.

NASA Inspector General Report Criticizes Boeing's Quality Control

NASA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) has raised concerns over quality control and standards at plane maker Boeing and its efforts to help the space agency return astronauts to the Moon.

A report from NASA’s OIG released on Aug. 8 focuses on the Space Launch System (SLS) version 1B—the powerful heavy-lift rocket system that NASA plans to use to send the crewed Orion spacecraft and large cargo to the Moon in 2028 as part of the Artemis IV mission.

According to NASA’s report, a “critical component” of this upgrade is Boeing’s development of the SLS’s new upper stage, the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS), which will aid in sending the Orion on its mission.

Once it is complete, EUS will give the SLS a 40 percent upgrade in carrying capability, going from 27 metric tons under Block 1—the SLS rocket’s first iteration—to 38 metric tons with Block 1B, according to the report.

However, progress on the SLS, which has been under development since 2014, has been plagued with issues, including Boeing’s “ineffective quality management and inexperienced workforce,” along with continued cost increases and schedule delays, the report said.

As part of its report, NASA’s OIG interviewed officials at NASA Headquarters, Marshall Space Flight Center, Boeing, and DCMA between August 2023 through May 2024.

It also visited the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana, to observe the SLS core stage and EUS production.

The OIG found that Boeing’s quality management system at Michoud “does not adhere” to international standards established under the global association SAE International. Continue…

Last month the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation took its “Debt Clock” on a tour of British Columbia to draw attention to the province’s mounting debt. The debt is currently $112 billion and rising by $53 million per week – faster than any other provincial government’s. That’s $20,000 for every British Columbian. The NDP-run province’s credit rating is “plummeting,” according to outside experts, driving up the interest rate it pays on new debt. It is spending $4 billion a year on interest and will soon pay more.

This is remarkable – and remarkably bad – for a province that for many decades prided itself on fiscal responsibility. Mid-20th-century Social Credit governments ran balanced budgets for 20 consecutive years. Gordon Campbell’s Liberal government then outlawed operating deficits in 2001 – and made cabinet members personally accountable for the results – going on to all-but eliminate the province’s operating debt. True, the capital debt and debt of Crown corporations were allowed to increase, raising direct government debt to $43.3 billion and total government debt to $69.8 billion at the end of the Campbell era. The Anti-Hate Network lumped the Campaign Life Coalition and its affiliated LifeSiteNews with neo-Nazis and skinheads in a ‘far-right’ blacklist.

The Canadian Anti-Hate Network attacked Christians and white people in a recent blacklist denouncing hate.

The blacklist, 40 Ways To Fight The Far-Right, referenced “far-right and hate movements … seen in Canada in the last few years.” It lumped together the Campaign Life Coalition and its affiliated LifeSiteNews with neo-Nazis and skinheads.

“The Catholic Church has survived for the last 2,000 years,” Kathleen Toth, Campaign Life’s founding president, wrote in 2000. “Its followers have weathered persecutions, wars, famines and intolerance from non-Catholics who disagree with its teachings.”

Campaign Life Coalition could not be reached for comment at publication.

The booklet also claimed “white boys and men” constitute most ‘hate-promoting’ movements, though it did not elaborate or source this claim.

The federally-subsidized Anti-Hate Network defines ‘hate-promoting’ as “ideologies, groups, movements and individuals which target members of protected groups.”

Canadian Heritage and Public Safety Canada provided $640,000 in funding “research” to the organization. Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge did not comment on publication, reported Blacklock’s Reporter. Continue…

Canadian providers described assisted suicide as 'heartwarming,' according to one study. One said they almost received 'an adrenaline rush' from the procedure.

A controversial paper says Canada’s assisted suicide regime may cover for medical practitioners with "serially homicidal personalities." He provided no evidence to substantiate his claims.

"Canada’s MAID [medical assistance in dying] system is criticized as the most permissive or least safeguarded in the world, raising the question of whether it could protect patients who fit the clinical profile of adult victims of HSK (health-care serial killers) from a killer working as a MAID provider," wrote Christopher Lyon, a Canadian social scientist who teaches at the University of York.

His father accessed MAID in 2021 after bouts of depression and suicidal ideation. They believe he was not properly assessed, reported the National Post.

Lyon did not say whether the practitioner responsible should be charged with murder or manslaughter.

"I want to be clear: I’m not calling anybody out there a murderer or a serial killer in a culpable sense," Lyon said in an interview. No police investigations or criminal charges are known. Continue…

Musk is set to interview Trump on Monday night, with the conversation airing live on the tech mogul’s X platform. Trump made his long-anticipated return to X earlier on Monday, posting a slew of campaign videos after an almost uninterrupted three-and-a-half year hiatus from the platform.

In a letter to Musk, European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton warned that Brussels will be monitoring the interview closely.

Musk must ensure that “effective mitigation measures are put in place regarding the amplification of harmful content” in connection with the live interview, Breton wrote, before claiming that Musk had failed to stop the spread of such content during a recent spate of right-wing riots in the UK. “If you’re a retired F-16 pilot and you’re looking to fight for freedom, they will hire you here,” Graham declared during a press conference in Kiev on Monday. “They’re going to look throughout NATO nations for willing fighter pilots who retired to come help them, until they can get their pilots trained.”

A Ukrainian military commander ordered his men to kill armed civilians and wound unarmed men while operating in Russia’s Kursk Region, a captured soldier has claimed during an interview.

Last week, despite suffering setbacks elsewhere on the frontline, Kiev launched a major cross-border military operation into Russia. Moscow’s security service, the FSB, released footage on Monday showing a man who it claimed was captured during the hostilities “with the help of locals.”

The prisoner of war identified himself as Ruslan Poltoratsky, 26, and said he was an active-duty member of Ukraine’s 80th Air Assault Brigade. His unit was given instructions on how to act on Russian soil by an officer whom he knew under the call sign Strizh (“swift” in Russian) who presumably commanded the squad in which Poltoratsky served.

“The commander specifically told us to … shoot men in their legs and throw them into a root cellar or basement. Kill them if armed,” he said, apparently referring to how he was supposed to treat Russian civilians. Continue…
