GOP-led House intervenes on Bannon's J6 legal case, making good on Speaker Johnson's promise

This new intervention from the House undermines the justifications the original Select Committee used to issue the subpoenas and provide ammunition for Bannon's appeal.

The GOP-led House has quietly filed a rare intervention in Steve Bannon's contempt of Congress case, arguing the Democrat-led House January 6 Select Committee failed in its formation to follow chamber rules – invalidating the two subpoenas it served Bannon that he ignore and ultimately put him behind bars.

The House brief argues the select committee was improperly constituted and that neither then-Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi nor the committee leadership followed the directives of House Resolution 503, which established the committee.

The Amicus Curiae brief filed by the House General Counsel nine days ago fulfills a promise from Speaker Mike Johnson in June to intervene in the case.

Bannon, a former Trump White House political adviser, refused to answer two subpoenas from the committee, citing executive privilege.

He was convicted and sentenced under two charges of contempt of Congress.

The intervention of the House under Johnson, a Louisiana Republican comes as Bannon is appeals the case.

This new intervention from the House undermines the justifications of the committee's subpoenas and potentially provides ammunition for the appeal.

Bannon is serving a four month prison sentence and calls himself a "political prisoner."

“We're working on filing an amicus brief with his appellate work there in his case because the January 6 committee was, we think, wrongfully constituted,” Johnson said in June. “We think the work was tainted. We think that they may have very well covered up evidence and maybe even more nefarious activities."

According to implementing resolution, the now GOP-led House argues, Pelosi was required to appoint 13 members to the committee, including five Republicans. However, only nine members were ever appointed.

Additionally, the House argues that according to the resolution, the committee was required to consult with its minority party ranking member before issuing a subpoena. However, the House argues that the committee never had a ranking member as defined by House rules.

The previous Congress under Pelosi argued that former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney was serving as the ranking member. However, she actually served as the Vice Chair of the Committee, which according to House Rules, constitutes a separate role.

The United Auto Workers union on Wednesday voted to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for president after previously backing President Joe Biden, Reuters reported.

After Biden announced his intention to not seek reelection, the UAW issued a statement highlighting the importance of defeating Trump.

“The path forward is clear: we will defeat Donald Trump and his billionaire agenda and elect a champion for the working class to the highest office in this country,” the UAW said in a statement, according to CNBC.

The UAW staged a large-scale auto strike at major manufacturers last year in which the union extracted considerable concessions from the "Big Three." The success of the strike prompted the UAW to launch a major unionization drive.

President Javier Milei faces new round of plagarism claims related to latest book

Journalist Alejandro Alfie alleges President Javier Milei copied fragments from his latest book 'Capitalismo, socialismo y la trampa neoclásica (Capitalism, socialism and the neoclassic trap)' verbatim from two Chilean writers. He also resumed the investigation by NOTICIAS, denouncing plagiarism in "Pandenomics".

This was exposed by journalist Alejandro Alfie, who shared the information on his X account. According to his denouncement, the entirety of chapter 4.5.3 of Milei's book, which comprises 14 pages (326 to 339), "is copied verbatim" from an article entitled "Demanda por dinero: teoría, evidencia, resultados (Demand for money: theory, evidence, results)", published by Chilean researchers Verónica Mies and Raimundo Soto in 2000.

"Anyone comparing both texts can easily find that 14 full pages of Milei's book have been plagiarised", stated the journalist, who resumed an investigation conducted by the newspaper El Mercurio in Chile where he claims that "there are 29 paragraphs copied from Mies and Soto, published in December 2000 and now on many of Milei's pages, as if those paragraphs had been written by the Argentine President".

The WilmerHale report wasgiven to Winters, who has apparentlytaken no action on it. One of the implicated individuals even went on to serve as an acting inspector general with Linick.

Instead,DHS IG Cuffari has “been endlessly harassedand had his office’s resources drained by a series of baseless inquiries” from the very same Integrity Committee.

Cuffari also began a review of DHS law enforcement’s response to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. The IG begangetting resistance to its review, and the department was not cooperating with the inquiry. The IG disclosed the trouble it was having in its semiannual reports to Congress in September 2021 and March 2022, according to the Intercept, and also shared the problem with other IGs in October 2021.

When the IG found that theSecret Service had deleted textsat the start of the Biden administration,he informed Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., the ostensible leader of the J6 committee.Thompson immediately began a campaign of claiming Cuffari had withheld the information, leading to left-wing media calling for his resignation and yet another Integrity Committee inquiry.

Horowitzhand-picked Wintersfor the Integrity Committee. When Winters became chair of the committee, Horowitz reportedly set up a memorandum of understanding with him to review incoming allegations and help decide which would get investigated and by whom. After a few months of outcry, Horowitz reportedly ceased triaging the incoming allegations.

By statute, the Integrity Committeechair is supposed to serve for a term of two years. However, Winters has served in that capacity since June of 2020.

“If they like you, you can do no wrong. If they hate you, you can only do wrong,” said a senior IG member at one federal agency who has observed the disparity.

The inspector general community is supposed to root out waste, fraud, and corruption in the federal government.When its own watchdog is unaccountable, helping out its friends and targeting others with harassment campaigns, the work is made more difficult.
