Three snipers were stationed inside building used in Trump assassination attempt

There were three snipers stationed inside the building the shooter used during Saturday's shooting of former President Donald Trump, a local law enforcement officer with direct knowledge of the incident tells CBS News.

The operations plan had them stationed inside the building looking out windows toward the Trump rally. The information about the three snipers being inside the building was first reported by BeaverCountian.com.

One of the snipers inside saw Thomas Matthew Crooks outside and looking up at the roof, observing the building and disappearing, a local law enforcement officer tells CBS News.

Crooks came back, sat down and looked at his phone.At that point, one of the snipers took a picture of him. Crooks took out a rangefinder and the sniper radioed to the command post. Crooks disappeared again and then came back a third time with a backpack. The snipers called in with information that he had a backpack and said he was walking towards the back of the building. (This is fucking ridiculous, the police didn’t do their jobs, NO ONE stopped him! Why didn't anyone take action? Couldn't the snipers do something?== Did the police intentionally fuck this up?)

Officers believe that Crooks might have used an air conditioning unit to get on top of the roof.

By the time other officers came for backup, he had climbed on top of the building and was positioned above and behind the snipers inside the building, the officer said.

Two other officers who heard the sniper's call tried to get onto the roof. State police started rushing to the scene, but by that time, a Secret Service sniper had already killed Crooks, the officer said.

A prominent Ukrainian air unit responded with delight to the attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump, who has criticized Western support for Kiev's proxy war against Russia.

The social media channel of Ukraine’s 79th Air Assault Brigade celebrated the shooting of former US President Donald Trump Saturday, according to a Sputnik contributor, appearing to jokingly take credit for the assassination attempt.

Security analyst Mark Sleboda made the revelation on Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program Monday.

“As soon as [the shooting] happened, the first thing that popped into my mind was, hmm, Mirotvorets,” said host Garland Nixon, referring to the Ukrainian government-connected website that appears to endorse the killing of those it deems enemies of Ukraine. “Was it crazy for me to think that it could have been Ukraine immediately without any information to suspect that Ukraine could have been behind it?”

Trump rally shooter's motive still unclear as Biden urges calm

Federal investigators are continuing to investigate the motive of the gunmanwho opened fire during former President Donald Trump's rally Saturday, grazing the former president's ear, killing one bystander and critically wounding two others. (The motive is he wanted to kill the President and conservatives because he’s listened to the horrid rhetoric of the left for 8 years, and he had a broken mind? How’s that? God these people are intentionally covering this, like it’s unknown, what his motive was.)

In an address from the Oval Office on Sunday night, President Biden said the shooter's motivations were still unclear, andurged Americans to reject politically motivated violence. (WTF??? That’s why the media the next day said, “we’ve got to tone it down, dampen the anger and response.” They are trying to keep anyone and everyone from telling the truth.)

"There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence, ever.

Period. No exceptions. (So stop stoking it!!!) We can't allow this violence to become normalized," Mr. Biden said. "The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It's time to cool it down. We all have a responsibility to do that." (It’s kind of hard to take advice from this guy because everything he described, no one should do, came out of his mouth for 6 years and probably longer)

More details emerged Sunday about the shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, who was killed after he opened fire. Rudimentary bomb-making material was found at the gunman's home and in his vehicle. He was a member of a local gun club, and a former classmate said that he had tried out for the high school rifle team but didn't make it.

The FBI is investigatingwhether the shooter was a politically motivated homegrown domestic violent extremist, and investigators are still combing through his background. Justice Department officials told reporters that investigators have the shooter's phone and were examining it at the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia.

Law enforcement sources said bystanders spotted the shooter with a rifle on a roof about 400 feet from where Trump was speaking in Butler, Pennsylvania, and reported his presence to authorities. The sheriff of Butler County said a local police officer was hoisted by another officer to look onto the roof. The shooter pointed his rifle toward the officer, who let go and fell off.

The shooter then turned toward the rally and fired six to eight rounds using an AR-style weapon. A Secret Service sniper soon shot and killed him. Trump was quickly whisked from the stage by armed agents, blood running down the side of his face.

Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday morning, saying it "was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening."

Mr. Biden has ordered an independent review of the security at the rally to assess what took place, and said he directed the Secret Service to examine security measures for this week's Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump was formally named as the party's nominee Monday. Trump landed in the city Sunday evening.

Trump and Mr. Biden spoke Saturday night in what a White House official characterized as a "good, short and respectful" call.

Former President Donald Trump picked Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate on Monday, as he runs to reclaim the office he lost to President Joe Biden in 2020.

Vance, who’s best known for his memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” spent years as a venture capitalist before leaving the industry when elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022.

After graduating from Yale Law School in 2013, Vance moved to San Francisco, where he was a principal at Mithril Capital, a fund co-founded by Peter Thiel and Ajay Royan. Mithril raised two funds, a $540 million and an $850 million vehicle in 2013 and 2017, respectively. Thiel was publicly active in politics in 2016, backing Trump’s first presidential campaign, and helped fund Vance’s Senate race, but has said he’s not planning to donate to any Republicans in the 2024 election.

In 2017, Vance left Mithril and joined Steve Case’s Washington, D.C.-based Revolution as a managing director. His move came when his wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, landed a role as a Supreme Court clerk.
