'Highest' protection? Rigorous international study of N95 masks upends federal COVID narrative
The CDC took nearly two years to formally recognize distinctions between masks for mitigating COVID-19 spread, finally saying in January that cloth masks offer "the least" protection and N95 respirators, which meet strict federal standards, "the highest."
The agency's slight nod to the largely symbolic value of cloth masks, predominantly worn in school settings, followed months of calls by onetime White House COVID advisers, among others, to promote masks actually designed to stop aerosolized transmission. It also spurred a run on N95s, sending prices skyward.
But a new peer-reviewed, randomized controlled trial (RCT) of N95s versus surgical masks, considered the midrange of protection, is undermining the late federal pivot to higher-quality masks and calls to reimpose mask mandates in schools, among other settings.
Published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (AIM) this week and led by researchers at Canada's McMaster University, the study found no statistically significant difference in protection between the two kinds of masks in healthcare facilities in Canada, Israel, Pakistan and Egypt.
Funders included the Canadian government and World Health Organization, which unlike the U.S. opposes masking young children and also found "no evidence" face coverings made a difference against influenza in a 2019 study.
Previous RCTs in the COVID era have found mediocre protection from face coverings at best. A Danish study of 6,000 that had trouble getting published — and eventually landed in AIM — found no statistically significant difference between surgical and no-mask wearers.
A much larger Bangladeshi study led by Yale researchers found that villages that got surgical masks reduced symptomatic infection by 11%, but the confidence interval hit zero and statistical significance disappeared for every age group under 50. Cloth masks had an "imprecise zero" effect.
Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt claimed that retiring National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci, whose flip-flops on masking led to mass public confusion early in the pandemic, couldn't name any studies showing mask effectiveness in his recent deposition in state-led litigation against alleged federal censorship.

Complete and Thorough Disarmament’: China Demands U.S. Destroy Its Nuclear Arsenal
The Chinese Foreign Ministry demanded in remarks on Wednesday that U.S. armed forces make “substantial and substantive cuts to its nuclear arsenal,” with the goal of ultimately ending America’s nuclear program.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian – a zealous “wolf warrior” diplomat known for spreading the unsubstantiated conspiracy theory that the Chinese coronavirus pandemic began as e-cigarette lung injuries in Maryland – demanded an end to the American nuclear program in response to a question on a Pentagon report revealing that the Chinese Communist Party is working to dramatically expand its own nuclear capabilities.
China’s opposition to America possessing nuclear weapons places it in line with the longtime foreign policy of North Korea, which is to support “denuclearization” by removing American forces, which have access to nuclear weapons, from the Korean peninsula, rather than defining the term as meaning an end to North Korea’s illegal nuclear program. North Korea, a Chinese client state, has since changed its policies, outlawing denuclearization in September.
China, unlike North Korea, is a signatory and legally recognized nuclear state under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. China insists that the expansions of its nuclear arsenal are not a violation of international law because they are pursued with the aim of “modernizing,” not expanding, capabilities.
The Pentagon report, delivered to Congress, revealed that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is seeking, according to U.S. information, to grow the number of nuclear warheads it possesses from about 400 to as many as 1,500 warheads in 13 years, by 2035. The prediction is based on the speed with which the Chinese military worked on expanding its nuclear arsenal and its other activities in 2021.
“The PRC has clearly stated its ambition to strengthen its “strategic deterrent,” and has continued to accelerate the modernization, diversification, and expansion of its nuclear forces, as well as the development of its space and counterspace capabilities,” the Defense Department asserted in a fact sheet on its report to Congress.
The report, titled, “China Military Power,” also takes a holistic look at the PLA and China as a competitive power to the United States, declaring the Communist Party “the most consequential and systemic challenge to our national security and to a free and open international system.” The Defense Department emphasized that China has also grown increasingly belligerent militarily in the South China Sea, the majority of which it claims illegally for itself, and that its mounting threats against the nation of Taiwan also pose a significant threat to global stability.

Kanye West announced his support for Balenciaga after the fashion house was slammed for its BDSM ad campaign featuring children — and found himself suspended from the platform after a series of wild tweets.
“I stand by Balenciaga and denounce all witch hunts and I cancel cancel culture Jesus is King Ending trafficking doesn’t start or end with a fashion campaign for Christ Sake,” he said in the midst of a Twitterstorm late Thursday night.
He then said in a second tweet, which featured a picture of himself, “Never turn our backs Demna and the Balenciaga family for life Cancel cancel culture Jesus please heal.”
Earlier in the day, the rapper had shared on Twitter a text exchange with Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, whom he’s worked with closely on multiple projects for years.
In the alleged texts, Denma begged West to ask his fans to “stop Denma hate,” to which he responded with “Love cures everything, Love Denma.”
West, 45, followed up the conversation tweet with another that read, “God loves Balenciaga Love is the answer Jesus is the answer Praying for all of the innocent artist and beautiful humans who make clothing that had nothing to do with the adds [sic] Peoples grandmothers work their [sic] for Christ sake.”
The rapper also said that canceling Balenciaga was not the way to end the sex trafficking of children.
Instead, he asked to “remove any and all forms of pornography from Twitter and every platform Pornography is the product of pediphilia [sic] When grown men look at porn they are watching someone’s daughter relive trauma for money.”
The “Gold Digger” rapper — who has previously admitted to having a porn and sex addiction — continued, “The use of Porn destroyed my family but Jesus will heal everything.”
West also took the chance to share a logo that appeared to be a mix of the Star of David and a Swastika. The tweet was deleted shortly after because it “violated Twitter rules.”
Following his rant, his Twitter was limited for 12 hours, he announced on former President Donald Trump’s Truth Social app.
However, Twitter owner Elon Musk tweeted just after midnight that West was “suspected” from the platform.

A troubled western Iowa institution for people with severe disabilities will be closed over the next two years, state leaders announced.
The Glenwood Resource Center is home to 152 Iowa adults with deep intellectual disabilities, including some caused by severe autism or brain injuries. Many of the residents also have physical disabilities. Some have lived there for decades, and many of their families have said they shouldn't have to leave.
The southwest Iowa facility is one of two state institutions that provide residential care for people with intellectual disabilities. The other is the Woodward Resource Center in central Iowa, which is to remain open under the new plan announced Thursday.
“While necessary, the decision to close the Glenwood Resource Center is a difficult one that I take very seriously," Gov. Kim Reynolds said in a joint news release with legislative leaders. "For many residents, it’s the only home they’ve ever known. I am fully committed to a seamless and successful transition of care for them, their families and the staff at Glenwood.”
The facilities are run by the Iowa Department of Human Services, whose director, Kelly Garcia, assured residents' families in December 2021 that there was no plan to close either institution anytime soon. Garcia said at the time that the mission of the two facilities would shift to focusing on temporary, intensive services for Iowans who lived most of the time in smaller placements in their communities.

The U.S. Department of Justice launched an investigation into the controversy. In December 2020, federal investigators determined the institution appeared to have violated its residents' civil rights by denying sufficient medical care and exposing them to unethical experimentation.
The Department of Justice later declared that Iowa relies too heavily on institutional care for people with disabilities. Federal and state officials have been negotiating legal settlements to address both of those contentions.

Sybil Finken, whose son, Seth, is a longtime resident of the Glenwood institution, said she was devastated by Thursday's news.
"They're putting all of these disabled people out of their safe place. It's the worst thing that could happen," she said in a phone interview.
Seth Finken, 42, has lived at the institution since 1984. He suffered severe brain damage from meningitis he had when he was a baby and was left deaf, blind and non-verbal. Sybil Finken contends he is among a minority of people with disabilities who need the kind of extensive, around-the-clock care provided in an institution.
Finken said she had figured the Glenwood Resource Center might be closed someday. "But I didn't think it would happen so soon," she said. "It's just overwhelming."
She said she planned to attend a townhall meeting Saturday with Department of Human Services leaders.
Former Glenwood Resource Center manager Kathy King said she was stunned by Thursday's news of its planned closure. She said DHS officials, including Garcia, had repeatedly assured people in Glenwood that the facility would remain open, even as its mission evolved. She said such a pledge was repeated in a meeting in February.
Shortly after she retired four years ago, King became a public critic of the poor medical care and unethical research being done under the Glenwood Resource Center's former superintendent, Jerry Rea. She is one of several former managers suing the state over what they say were their dismissals or forced departures related to their questioning of how the facility was being run.
King is the legal guardian of a resident at the Glenwood Resource Center, and she has said conditions seemed to improve after the former superintendent and DHS director were replaced. But she said Thursday that she should have known a merger was in the offing when the state decided to have Woodward Resource Center Superintendent Marsha Edgington run both facilities instead of hiring a replacement for Rea.
"I should have seen the writing on the wall," said King, who was a state employee for 43 years. "I feel blindsided and stupid."
Advocates for Iowans with disabilities have applauded efforts to rely less heavily on institutional care, but they also have noted a severe shortage of direct care workers to assist people with disabilities in their homes or other community settings. Legislators are moving to increase Medicaid spending to raise pay for those workers, in hopes to ease the shortage.

The two institutions have a total of nearly 1,200 state jobs, which make them major employers in the small towns where they’re located. Their annual budgets total nearly $144 million in federal and state money. State leaders said Thursday they would aim to ease the burden of the closure on the Glenwood area, which is in southwest Iowa's Mills County.
Iowa Democrats say Republican leaders failed to run Glenwood Resource Center
The two-year phaseout timeline for the Glenwood Resource Center is more gradual than the process Iowa used to shutter state mental hospitals in Clarinda and Mount Pleasant in 2015. That process was completed in a matter of months, and three former longtime patients of the facilities died soon after being transferred to nursing homes with poor quality ratings, a Des Moines Register investigation found.
Iowa Democratic legislative leaders released a statement on Twitter Thursday saying the transition of Glenwood Resource Center residents must be handled more carefully than the ones from the Clarinda and Mount Pleasant facilities were. The Democrats, Sen. Zach Wahls of Coralville and Rep. Jennifer Konfrst of Windsor Heights, called Thursday "a devastating day for the residents, families, employees and everyone who calls Glenwood home."
Wahls and Konfrst blamed Thursday's news on the Republicans controlling state government.
"This decision became inevitable because of years of indifference and neglect shown to the Glenwood community by Gov. Reynolds and Republican lawmakers," the Democrats' statement said.
Center employees to be offered bonuses
Department of Human Services spokesman Matt Highland said the Glenwood Resource Center is authorized to employ about 716 fulltime workers. The state jobs are an important part of the economy in the town of 5,000 residents.
All residents of the facility are to be transferred to the Woodward Resource Center or to community placements by June 30, 2024, according to a timeline Highland provided. Glenwood Resource Center employees will be offered bonuses of up to $12,000 to remain on their jobs during the transition.
