R. Kelly given 30 years in jail for sex abuse

US singer R. Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for using his celebrity status to sexually abuse children and women.

The R&B artist, 55, was convicted last September in New York of racketeering and sex trafficking crimes.

He had faced years of allegations and the judge on Wednesday said he had an "indifference to human suffering".

Lawyers for the singer, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, say he will appeal.

Ahead of his sentencing, a handful of women took the stand to confront Kelly.

A woman identified only as Angela called the singer a Pied Piper who "grew in wickedness" with every new victim, while others who were not named testified he had broken their spirits.

"I literally wished I would die because of how you made me feel," said one.

Dressed in prison khakis and dark glasses, Kelly declined to make a statement of his own and did not react as the verdict was handed down.

The building blocks for the bleak future we’re just now getting a foretaste of—police shootings of unarmed citizens, profit-driven prisons, weapons of compliance, a wall-to-wall surveillance state, pre-crime programs, a suspect society, school-to-prison pipelines, militarized police, overcriminalization, SWAT team raids, endless wars, etc.—were put in place by government officials we trusted to look out for our best interests.

As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, the problems we are facing will not be fixed overnight: that is the grim reality with which we must contend.

Yet that does not mean we should give up or give in or tune out. What we need to do is declare our independence from the tyranny of the American police state.

Gene-Edited Beef Cattle Resistant To Heat Stress Approved By FDA

Beef from cattle that's been gene-edited to better withstand heat stress could soon be making its way onto dinner plates in the US.

The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced it has made a “low-risk determination” for the marketing of food products made from the gene-tweaked beef cattle after their review found that the genomic alteration didn’t cause any safety concerns. This means the FDA doesn’t need the developer of the gene-edited cattle to earn further approval before bringing the beef to market, and it could be available to consumers in around two years.

In recent years, the FDA has given the thumbs up to five applications for five gene-edited animals: chicken, goats, salmon, rabbit, and pigs. However, this latest approval is a first for the FDA, because the genomic alteration can be passed onto offspring, allowing the trait to be shared through conventional breeding.

The modified cattle are products of the company Acceligen, a subsidiary of the US-based bio-engineering company Recombinetics. Their Angus cattle, called PRLR-SLICK, were genetically edited using CRISPR to grow short and slick hair, reducing their vulnerability to hot weather. This heritable gene for this extra-cool hair is the result of a naturally-occurring mutation that can occur in some conventionally bred cattle.

According to the FDA, studies have shown how the slick-hair coat helps cattle to fare better against temperature-related stress and may result in improved food production. Heat-stressed cattle is also a problem that’s expected to become even more prevalent as the climate crisis continues to deepen, with heatwaves set to become longer, more common, and more aggressive in many parts of the world.

More gene-tweaked meat could be on its way too – the FDA hopes this latest approval will encourage other biotech companies to develop gene-edited animals for their approval.

“Today’s decision underscores our commitment to using a risk and science-based, data-driven process that focuses on safety to the animals containing intentional genomic alterations and safety to the people who eat the food produced by these animals,” Steven M. Solomon, director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, said in a statement.

“We expect that our decision will encourage other developers to bring animal biotechnology products forward for the FDA’s risk determination in this rapidly developing field, paving the way for animals containing low-risk IGAs to more efficiently reach the marketplace,” he added.

Julian now faces a prison sentence of up to 175 years

Last Friday, home secretary Priti Patel gave her approval for the UK to send my husband, Julian Assange, to the country that plotted his assassination.

Julian remains imprisoned in Belmarsh after more than three years at the behest of US prosecutors. He faces a prison sentence of up to 175 years for arguably the most celebrated publications in the history of journalism.

Patel’s decision to extradite Julian has sent shockwaves across the journalism community. The home secretary flouted calls from representatives of the Council of Europe, the OSCE, almost 2000 journalists and 300 doctors for the extradition to be halted.

When Julian calls around the children’s bed time, they talk over each other boisterously. The calls only last 10 minutes, so when the call ended abruptly the other night Max, who is three, asked tearfully if it was because he’d been naughty, I absentmindedly said it wasn’t his fault, but Mike Pompeo’s. Five-year-old Gabriel asked: “Who is Mike Pompeo?”

Mike Pompeo had been on my mind, because while the home secretary in this country was busy signing Julian’s extradition order, in Spain a High Court judge was summoning Pompeo for questioning regarding his role as director of the CIA in their reported plots to murder my husband.

While at the helm of the CIA, President Trump’s most loyal supporter reportedly tasked his agents with preparing “sketches” and “options” for the assassination of their father.

The citation for Pompeo to appear before a Spanish judge comes out of an investigation into illicit spying of Julian and his lawyers through a company registered in Spain. Spanish police seized large amounts of electronic data, and insiders involved in carrying out the clandestine operations testified that they acted on instruction of the CIA. They had discussed abducting and poisoning Julian.

Gabriel was six months old at the time and had been a target too. One witness was instructed to obtain DNA swabs from a soiled nappy in order to establish that Julian was his father. Another admitted to planting hidden microphones under the fire extinguishers to tap legally privileged meetings between Julian and his lawyers.

The recordings of Julian’s legal meetings in the Ecuadorian embassy in London were physically transported to handlers in the United States on a regular basis. A break-in at Julian’s lawyers’ office was caught on camera, and investigators discovered photographs of Julian’s lawyer’s legal papers taken inside the embassy. The operations targeting his lawyers read like they are taken from a Soviet playbook.

Across the pond, ever since the Nixon administration’s attempted prosecution of the New York Times over the Pentagon Papers over half a century ago, constitutional lawyers had been warning that the 1917 Espionage Act would one day be abused to prosecute journalists.

In a letter, published today, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović, called on UK Home Secretary Priti Patel not to extradite Julian Assange.

Writing in view of the impending decision on Mr Assange’s extradition, the Commissioner noted that the wider human rights implications of doing so had not yet been adequately considered in the extradition proceedings. She particularly highlighted that the indictment by the United States against Mr Assange raised important questions about the protection of those that publish classified information in the public interest, including information that exposes human rights violations. She concluded that allowing Mr Assange’s extradition on this basis would have a chilling effect on media freedom, and could ultimately hamper the press in performing its task as purveyor of information and public watchdog in democratic societies.

The British home secretary has formally approved the extradition of WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange to the United States, in the latest development in a dangerous and misguided criminal prosecution that has the potential to criminalize national security journalism in the United States.

Previously, a major coalition of civil liberties organizations, including Freedom of the Press Foundation, implored U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to drop the case against Assange in the name of protecting the rights of journalists everywhere. So, too, have the editors of major news outlets such as The New York Times and Washington Post.

By continuing to extradite Assange, the Biden DOJ is ignoring the dire warnings of virtually every major civil liberties and human rights organization in the country that the case will do irreparable damage to basic press freedom rights of U.S. reporters.

The prosecution, which includes 17 charges under the Espionage Act and one under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, covers events that took place more than a decade ago, but was brought only under the Trump administration — after the Obama Department of Justice reportedly considered charges but dismissed them for their dangerous First Amendment implications.

Reports suggest Assange may have at least one more avenue of appeal, so he may not be on a flight to the United States just yet. But this is one more troubling development in a case that could upend journalists’ rights in the 21st century.

You don’t have to like Assange or his political opinions at all to grasp the dangerous nature of this case for journalists everywhere, either. Even if you don’t consider him a “journalist,” much of the activity described in the charges against him is common newsgathering practices. A successful conviction would potentially make receiving classified information, asking for sources for more information, and publishing certain types of classified information a crime. Journalists, of course, engage in all these activities regularly.

There is some historical irony in the fact that this extradition announcement falls during the anniversary of the Pentagon Papers trial, which began with the Times publication of stories based on the legendary leak on June 13, 1971, and continued through the seminal Supreme Court opinion rejecting prior restraint on June 30, 1971.

In the months and years following that debacle, whistleblower (and FPF co-founder) Daniel Ellsberg became the first journalistic source to be charged under the Espionage Act. What many do not know is that the Nixon administration attempted to prosecute Times reporter Neil Sheehan for receiving the Pentagon Papers as well — under a very similar legal theory the Justice Department is using against Assange.

Thankfully, that prosecution failed. And until this one does too, we continue to urge the Biden administration to drop this prosecution. Every day it continues to further undermine the First Amendment.

The ‘Trapped in the Closet’ singer, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, was convicted on all counts during a six-week trial that concluded in September. Prosecutors made the case that his entourage of managers and assistants helped the singer meet and control young girls, arguing the setup constituted a criminal enterprise under federal laws. “Although sex was certainly a weapon that you used, this is not a case about sex,” Donnelly told Kelly as she read off his sentence. “It’s a case about violence, cruelty and control.”

Kelly’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, said they plan to appeal. Her team had argued for a sentence of 10 years or less, claiming the singer had “experienced a traumatic childhood involving severe, prolonged childhood sexual abuse, poverty, and violence.” As an adult, his “literary deficiencies” left him open to being “repeatedly defrauded and financially abused, often by the people he paid to protect him,” according to his lawyers.

Several of the singer’s victims also gave statements before the sentence was read. “You made me do things that broke my spirit,” one woman declared, adding “I literally wished I would die because of how low you made me feel. Do you remember that?”

US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Breon Peace praised the sentencing as a “significant outcome” for the singer’s victims, declaring he had “preyed upon children and young women … for decades,” forcing “victims, including minors” to appear in “porno films” which he “produced and directed.”

While the multi-platinum recording artist has been dogged by allegations of abuse, specifically relating to underage girls, since the 1990s, the accusations never seemed to impede his career. A 1997 lawsuit by a woman who claimed he had committed sexual battery and harassment against her while she was under 18 was settled, and he was acquitted of 14 counts of child pornography in 2008. His marriage at age 27 to then-15-year-old singer Aaliyah was also examined during the trial, with his former assistant and manager testifying to having helped facilitate the illegal union, which was annulled before the younger artist died in a plane crash in 2001.

The Grammy-winning predator, who has been imprisoned without bail since 2019, also faces federal and state charges in Illinois and Minnesota, with the Illinois trial scheduled to begin in August.

The former president’s guard and driver will both reportedly testify that Trump never lunged for the steering wheel

The US Secret Service said on Tuesday that it will formally respond to claims that former President Donald Trump had attacked an agent and attempted to commandeer his vehicle during the January 6, 2021 riot on Capitol Hill. The allegations were made by an aide to Trump’s former chief of staff.

In a statement released after a hearing of the Democrat-led January 6 Committee, the Secret Service said that it has been “cooperating fully with the select committee,” and would be “responding formally and on the record to the committee regarding new allegations that surfaced in today’s testimony.”

According to testimony by Cassidy Hutchinson, who was an aide to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Trump instructed his driver to bring him to the US Capitol after giving a speech to his supporters on January 6, 2021. When his head of security, Bobby Engel, refused, Trump allegedly said “I’m the f**king president, take me up to the Capitol,” before he “grab[bed] at the steering wheel” when Engel refused, and “lunged” at his security chief with his free hand.

Hutchinson did not see these events but said that Engel was present when she heard the story from Deputy Chief of Staff Tony Ornato, and that “neither man cast doubt on the story.” However, according to the Washington Post, three unnamed members of Trump’s security detail that day said that the story is false.

Furthermore, NBC News reported that both Engel and Trump’s driver on the day are “prepared to testify under oath that neither man was assaulted and that Mr. Trump never lunged for the steering wheel.”

While Hutchinson stated that Trump was traveling in “The Beast,” the armored presidential limousine, photos from January 6 show Trump leaving after his speech in an SUV. If Trump had been in “The Beast,” he would have been separated from the driver by a pane of bulletproof glass.

Trump himself described Hutchinson’s story as “sick and fraudulent,” and suggested that she may have been motivated to testify out of grievance that he turned down her request to work with him in Florida after his departure from office.

None of the January 6 Committee’s members – five Democrats and two Republicans who have repeatedly criticized the former president – cross-examined Hutchinson’s claims.

Biden immigration policies under scrutiny after 51 migrant deaths in Texas

Joe Biden’s policies are under scrutiny after more than 51 migrants were found dead in San Antonio, Texas in an apparent human smuggling operation. As officials are investigating the cause of the deaths, which took place in a tractor-trailer, officials are certain about one thing: the administration’s border policies are not working.

After receiving reports of the incident, Texas Governor Greg Abbott lamented those deaths are on President Biden. He added, this event is a result of the President’s open border policies. Meanwhile, San Antonio’s Mayor Ron Nirenberg tried to be diplomatic with his comments on the incident, while stressing the tragedy of the situation.

“We have been working to, you know, assist migrants who are here seeking asylum as we have throughout the year, every year,” said the Mayor. “We know that there’s been increasing volumes over the last six months, 12 months related to the, you know, the policies…our focus right now is to try to bring aid to them as as best we can, but this is nothing short of a horrific human tragedy.”

On Monday, more than 40 migrants were found in or near an abandoned tractor trailer in what authorities hypothesize was a human smuggling operation. At the time, there were16 survivors who were taken to nearby hospitals. Some of them later died, in turn, bringing the death toll up to over 50.

Even Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Oberador gave his condolences to the victims, adding the US-Mexico border is a “disgrace” and is “out of control.” He confirmed 22 of the dead victims were Mexican citizens. Lopez Obrador went on to blame bad public policy and opportunistic human smugglers for the incident.

“These unfortunate events have to do with the situation of poverty and desperation of our Central American and Mexican brothers and sisters,” stated the Mexican President. “It happens because there is also human trafficking and lack of controls at the border between Mexico and the United States and inside the United States.”

Critics have lambasted Biden’s border policies since he took office. The administration has overseen the largest surge of border violations in more than 20-years by migrants coming in through the southern border. Policies scrutinized under the microscope include his attempted reversal of the Trump-era ‘Remain in Mexico’ and Title 42 policies that sought to keep migrants out of the US for health reasons or while their immigration applications were being processed.

Biden also cut funding for border wall projects, prompting border states like Texas and Arizona to protect the federal border on their own and with only state resources. Additionally, as Biden looks to revoke Trump-era immigration policies, border agents fear an even bigger mass migration event may be on the horizon. Human rights officials also worry the failures at the southern border will only encourage more migrants to take the dangerous journey to the land of the free.

“(Migrants) pay $8,000-12,000, those who died were also paying, but they remain to pay for five, ten years,” explained Luis Garcia Villagran, migrant rights activist and director at Human Dignity Center. “That is the new slavery those politicians have invented.”

Meanwhile, President Biden commented and suggested criticizing him for his border policies is “grandstanding” and is tantamount to what the human smugglers are doing. He also stressed his proposed anti-smuggling campaign with what he called his “regional partners is already underway and working. Biden claimed more than 2,400 smugglers were arrested as a result.

The US President also expressed hope that his initiative will continue to bring smugglers to justice. However, his border czar, Kamala Harris, only offered thoughts to the victims and a promise to take action in a tweet.

The Trump endorsement has reaped substantial wins for Republican candidates across the country. This comes as general election match ups solidified in Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, New York and Illinois.

In Utah, Sen. Mike Lee declared Republican voters had chosen freedom after he decimated his primary opponents after securing more than 60 percent of the vote. In November, the two-term senator is favored the win in his race against independent and 2016 presidential hopeful Evan McCullin who has been endorsed by a number of Utah Democrats .

Meanwhile in neighboring Colorado, conservative firebrand Lauren Boebert thrashed her moderate challenger, state Sen. Don Coram, by nearly 30-points. She will take on former Aspen City Councilman Adam Frisch in November.

“You don’t mess with God-fearing women who put their country first, who stand up for what’s right, will not bend over backwards to the establishment and let their people get run over,” Boebert exclaimed amid her primary victory speech. “Those days are over!”

Additionally, 2020 election skeptic Joe O’Dea will attempt to end incumbent Colorado Sen. Michael Bennett’s aspirations of attaining a third term.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma saw no-nonsense conservative Sen. James Lankford take another step towards re-election, while Rep. Markwayne Mullin emerged from a special election primary to replace retiring Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe’s’ seat. Also, despite the controversy surrounding his pro-life governance, Governor Kevin Stitt has asserted his constituents are pleased with the current path of the sooner state.

“I’m looking forward to seeing who my opponent is in the general and then having a great conversation with Oklahomans about the direction they want our state to go,” Stitt stated. “And I’m confident Oklahomans love the direction that we’re going.”

Democrat New York Governor Kathy Hochul easily warded off challenges from NYC public advocate Jumaane Williams and Rep. Tom Suozzi. On the right side of the aisle, Rep. Lee Zeldin managed to defeat Andrew Giuliani with 43 percent of the vote for the Empire State’s GOP gubernatorial nomination.

The biggest upset of the night came from Illinois, where state Sen. Darren Bailey won the state’s Republican governor primary despite the GOP establishment donating millions to his opponent’s campaign. Bailey’s toughest opponent, Richard Irvin, received $50 million from GOP donor and Citadel founder Ken Griffin. The dark horse candidate is looking to unseat Democrat Governor J.B. Pritzker, who he has been called the worst governor in America.

“We were outspent my tens-of-millions of dollars in the primary and look what happened,” said Bailey. “This is how it’s done…here’s tip and some advice for J.B. Pritzker: start packing, friend.”

Twelve Trump-endorsed candidates from Tuesday’s primaries will appear on general election ballots. His current primary election endorsement track record stands at a 93 percent success rate.

“I think the larger development from yesterday,” Stewart said, referring to Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony, “is that more Republicans have decided Ron DeSantis is a better option. This is just too much.”

While there was “nothing surprising” about how we now know Trump behaved on the day of the insurrection, the host said the difference now is that Republicans have a clear alternative. “Now they know where they’re going,” he said. “And they can steer away from Trump feeling confident. He’s lost his utility. They never fucking liked him. But he’s starting to lose his utility.”

“They’re starting to realize they’ve got a guy who they think will do what Trump can do without the revolution part,” he said of DeSantis. “So the game-changer part and the danger to Donald Trump is simply, they’ve got a better option now. He’s no longer the only game in town. And he’s damaged enough that it just doesn’t make fucking sense. It doesn’t make political sense.”

After a brief detour about how Trump has “always been a man-baby” throwing condiments against a wall, Stewart explained that while everyone in his White House knew they were “making a deal with the devil,” now “the biggest threat to Donald Trump is there’s a new devil in town” who doesn’t have the same baggage.

“DeSantis has the same enemies that Trump has,” he added. “DeSantis has the same policies, he has the same combative style. The only thing he doesn’t have is, DeSantis is educated, he’s been a governor and his toilets aren’t made of gold.”

New York Supreme Court strikes down law permitting noncitizens to vote

New York’s highest court has ruled against allowing non-citizens to vote in city elections, handing the Republican National Committee (RNC) a significant victory.

Richmond County Supreme Court Judge Ralph Porzio made clear in a ruling Monday that “there is no statutory ability for the City of New York to issue inconsistent laws permitting non-citizens to vote and exceed the authority granted to it by the New York State Constitution.”

“This Court finds that Municipal Voting Law violates the New York State Constitution, the New York State Election Law, and the Municipal Home Rule Law,” the ruling stated.

The RNC filed a lawsuit in January against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, the New York Council, and the New York Board of Elections after the state passed legislation allowing “a new class of persons called ‘municipal voters’ who are non-citizens who are either lawful permanent residents or persons authorized to work in the United States” to vote in local elections in 2023, as previously reported.

At the time, Fox News reported that RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel blasted New York City Democrats, saying, “If Democrats can subvert elections this flagrantly in America’s largest city, they can do it anywhere.”

Following the court’s ruling this week, McDaniel took to Twitter to celebrate the win, writing, “This ruling is a huge victory for election integrity and the rule of law: American elections should be decided by American citizens.

“The RNC is proud to head a broad coalition in successfully challenging this unconstitutional scheme and will continue to lead the effort across the country to ensure only citizens can vote in America’s elections,” she added.

Today, a New York City court struck down the Democrats’ radical scheme that would allow over 800,000 non-citizens to vote in NYC elections.

For instance: in the landmark case of "Muckrock, LLC v C.I.A." she ruled that the CIA unlawfully adopted a policy of denial for any FOIA request for email records that didnt contain sender, recipients, time stamps, or subjects.
