Fox News anchor Chris Wallace is taking heat on social media after describing White House press secretary Jen Psaki as one of the best to ever hold the position.

What did Wallace say?

While speaking on Fox News Friday, Wallace praised network correspondent Peter Doocy and Psaki. The two have made headlines throughout the Biden administration for their often tense exchanges in the White House press briefing room.

Doocy and Psaki even clashed on Friday when Doocy grilled Psaki about President Joe Biden's absence from the southern U.S. border amid the migrant crisis.

"Honestly, as somebody who's spent six years in the White House, my immediate reaction was, 'Those are two people at the top of their game. I think that [Doocy] has become the Sam Donaldson of this White House press corps. And since I was working in the press corps when Sam Donaldson was there, that's a very grudging compliment on my part," Wallace said.

"And Jen Psaki, I think, is one of the best press secretaries ever," he continued. "I don't know that anything was particularly accomplished, but they both gave and got pretty good."

Yesterday, during his appearance before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, former FBI Director James Comey was grilled by a very confusing-sounding Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on what McCain called Comey’s “double standard” — in the FBI ending its investigation of Hillary Clinton’s private unsecure email server vs. the agency’s ongoing investigation of Donald Trump’s connections, if any, [the hearing revealed Trump is not being personally investigated] with Russia…

McCain: “Yea, but I think it would intensely arouse my curiosity if the President of the United States said we had that thing, you know. I’d like to know what the hell that thing is, particularly if I’m the director of the FBI.”

Comey: “Yeah, I get that, senator. Honestly, I’ll tell you what, this is speculation, but what I concluded at the time is in his [Trump’s] memory, he was searching back to our encounter at the dinner and was preparing himself to say ‘I offer loyalty to you, you promise loyalty to me,’ and all of a sudden, his memory showed him that did not happen, and I think he pulled up short. That’s just a guess. But I, I’ve had a lot of conversations with humans over the years.“

Background

spiders are predaceous arthropods that are capable of subduing and consuming relatively large prey items compared to their own body size. Abstract

Many of the most virulent emerging infectious diseases in humans, e.g., AIDS and Ebola, are zoonotic, having shifted from wildlife populations. Critical questions for predicting disease emergence are: (1) what determines when and where a disease will first cross from one species to another, and (2) which factors facilitate emergence after a successful host shift. In wild primates, infectious diseases most often are shared between species that are closely related and inhabit the same geographic region. Therefore, humans may be most vulnerable to diseases from the great apes, which include chimpanzees and gorillas, because these species represent our closest relatives. Geographic overlap may provide the opportunity for cross-species transmission, but successful infection and establishment will be determined by the biology of both the host and pathogen. We extrapolate the evolutionary relationship between pathogen sharing and divergence time between primate species to generate "hotspot" maps, highlighting regions where the risk of disease transfer between wild primates and from wild primates to humans is greatest. We find that central Africa and Amazonia are hotspots for cross-species transmission events between wild primates, due to a high diversity of closely related primate species. Hotspots of host shifts to humans will be most likely in the forests of central and west Africa, where humans come into frequent contact with their wild primate relatives. These areas also are likely to sustain a novel epidemic due to their rapidly growing human populations, close proximity to apes, and population centers with high density and contact rates among individuals.

"Missing link" is a non-scientific term for a transitional fossil. It is often used in popular science and in the media for any new transitional form. The term originated to describe the hypothetical intermediate form in the evolutionary series of anthropoid ancestors to anatomically modern humans (hominization). The term was influenced by the pre-Darwinian evolutionary theory of the Great Chain of Being and the now-outdated notion (orthogenesis) that simple organisms are more primitive than complex organisms.

The term "missing link" has fallen out of favor with biologists because it implies the evolutionary process is a linear phenomenon and that forms originate consecutively in a chain. Instead, last common ancestor is preferred since this does not have the connotation of linear evolution, as evolution is a branching process.

In addition to implying a linear evolution, the term also implies that a particular fossil has not yet been found. Many of the famous discoveries in human evolution are often termed "missing links". For example, there were the Peking Man and the Java Man, despite the fact that these fossils are missing. Transitional forms that have not been discovered are also termed missing links; however, there is no singular missing link. The scarcity of transitional fossils can be attributed to the incompleteness of the fossil record.

Once captured and secured, the relative size of some insect prey and the rigidity of their exoskeleton limits the use of mechanical comminution to extract prey nutrients. Consequently, the evolution of EOD is tightly linked with the evolution of silk and venom use, and EOD in particular can be regarded as an expression of an extended phenotype [7]. Studies focussing on the behavioural adaptations to different life styles in spiders, cursorial or web building, diurnal or nocturnal, attack wrapping or bite attacking (based on venom use), are numerous. The molecular background with respect to the proteins used for silk, venom and digestive fluids, however, is still understudied. Which role do the different molecular components play in the realisation of the strategies used by the spiders? While proteomic techniques have already been deployed to progress our understanding of the composition, function and synthesis of spider silk [3, 8,9,10,11] and venom [4, 10, 12,13,14], investigations on the components and functionality of spider digestive fluids have only begun very recently [15]. Yet, several aspects of the feeding ecology of spiders prompt fascinating questions concerning the biomolecular composition of these fluids that may help us to understand the evolution of EOD. First, spiders can fast for a long period of time, which requires the active proteins in digestive fluids to be synthesised rather quickly or be reasonable stable over longer times. Second, the use of enzymes outside the protective milieu of the spiders' body requires the incorporation of assisting proteins that regulate the activity and decelerate the degradation of active components in the open or in the unpredictable environment inside the prey's body. Third, enzymes in digestive fluids need to be very potent as only very small amounts are produced and released by the spider to quickly dissolve a potentially large amount of prey tissues [16]. Finally, the mode of digesting extra-orally may have a beneficial side effect as it allows spiders to defend themselves against infections before potential pathogens enter their body. It may therefore not surprise if immune proteins are found in digestive fluids [15].

"Insects are the main prey of spiders and are rich in proteins and lipids [17, 18]. Hence, spider digestive fluids are expected to be rich in proteases and lipases. In a pioneering study, the protein composition of digestive fluids of the orb web spider Nephilingis (Nephilengys) cruentata was investigated, and was shown to consist of a mix of hydrolases such as lipases and proteases, but also toxins and regulatory proteins [15]. A very abundant type of protein found was astacin-like metalloproteases (MEROPS peptidase database: http://merops.sanger.ac.uk/cgi-bin/famsum?family=M12) with 26 different copies present. Interestingly, this group of enzymes have also been found in spider venoms [19], suggesting that the venom may also have a digestive function [20]. As the venom injection usually precedes the release of digestive fluids it seems plausible that some of the venom components may pave the way to facilitate the effectiveness of the digestive enzymes [21, 22]. For example,Sanggaard et al. [10] identified hyaluronidases in the venom of the mygalomorph spider Acanthoscurria geniculata. These enzymes break down the extracellular matrix inside the prey's body[23] for the toxins to be spread more quickly. However, the same effect is also applicable forfacilitating the spread and efficiency of digestive enzymes injected after the venom. So far, the nature and number of proteins overlapping in the two secretions, digestive fluid and venom, have not yet been specifically analysed."

Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae) is a human pathogen and the causative agent for leprosy, a chronic disease characterized by lesions of the skin and peripheral nerve damage. Zoonotic transmission of M. leprae to humans by nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) has been shown to occur in the southern United States, mainly in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. Nine-banded armadillos are also common in South America, and residents living in some areas in Brazil hunt and kill armadillos as a dietary source of protein. This study examines the extent of M. leprae infection in wild armadillos and whether these New World mammals may be a natural reservoir for leprosy transmission in Brazil, similar to the situation in the southern states of the U.S. The presence of the M. leprae-specific repetitive sequence RLEP was detected by PCR amplification in purified DNA extracted from armadillo spleen and liver tissue samples. A positive RLEP signal was confirmed in 62% of the armadillos (10/16), indicating high rates of infection with M. leprae. Immunohistochemistry of sections of infected armadillo spleens revealed mycobacterial DNA and cell wall constituents in situ detected by SYBR Gold and auramine/rhodamine staining techniques, respectively. The M. leprae-specific antigen, phenolic glycolipid I (PGL-I) was detected in spleen sections using a rabbit polyclonal antibody specific for PGL-I. Anti-PGL-I titers were assessed by ELISA in sera from 146 inhabitants of Belterra, a hyperendemic city located in western Pará state in Brazil. A positive anti-PGL-I titer is a known biomarker for M. leprae infection in both humans and armadillos. Individuals who consumed armadillo meat most frequently (more than once per month) showed a significantly higher anti-PGL-I titer than those who did not eat or ate less frequently than once per month. Armadillos infected with M. leprae represent a potential environmental reservoir. Consequently, people who hunt, kill, or process or eat armadillo meat are at a higher risk for infection with M. leprae from these animals.

Author summary

Armadillos have been shown to be a natural reservoir of Mycobacterium leprae infection in the southern states of the U.S. and have been implicated in the zoonotic transmission of leprosy to humans. To investigate this in Brazil, we conducted surveys of armadillos in western Pará state in the Brazilian Amazon region where leprosy is hyperendemic in humans. Individuals living in the small town of Belterra were surveyed for the extent and frequency of interaction with armadillos (hunting, preparing the meat for cooking, or eating the meat for food). We also took samples of liver and spleen from armadillos to look for M. leprae infection in the tissues. We found that a majority of residents had some contact with armadillos (~65%) and that infection by M. leprae in armadillos in this area was also very high (62%). Those individuals who ate armadillo meat more than once a month had a significantly higher antibody titer to the M. leprae-specific antigen, PGL-I. Understanding the dynamics of leprosy transmission in different geographic regions and knowing the behavioral risks of humans interacting with potentially infected animals will help clarify the relative risk of zoonotic transmission of leprosy in this region.

Abstract

BACKGROUND

In the southern region of the United States, such as in Louisiana and Texas, there are autochthonous cases of leprosy among native-born Americans with no history of foreign exposure. In the same region, as well as in Mexico, wild armadillos are infected with Mycobacterium leprae.

METHODS

Whole-genome resequencing of M. leprae from one wild armadillo and three U.S. patients with leprosy revealed that the infective strains were essentially identical. Comparative genomic analysis of these strains and M. leprae strains from Asia and Brazil identified 51 single-nucleotide polymorphisms and an 11-bp insertion–deletion. We genotyped these polymorphic sites, in combination with 10 variable-number tandem repeats, in M. leprae strains obtained from 33 wild armadillos from five southern states, 50 U.S. outpatients seen at a clinic in Louisiana, and 64 Venezuelan patients, as well as in four foreign reference strains.

RESULTS

The M. leprae genotype of patients with foreign exposure generally reflected their country of origin or travel history. However, a unique M. leprae genotype (3I-2-v1) was found in 28 of the 33 wild armadillos and 25 of the 39 U.S. patients who resided in areas where exposure to armadillo-borne M. leprae was possible. This genotype has not been reported elsewhere in the world.

CONCLUSIONS

Wild armadillos and many patients with leprosy in the southern United States are infected with the same strain of M. leprae. Armadillos are a large natural reservoir for M. leprae, and leprosy may be a zoonosis in the region. (Funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and others.)

Abstract

For many years, the biblical term tzaraat has referred to leprosy. In fact, the disease or diseases described under this name have no relationship to leprosy, as it was known in the Middle Ages or today; moreover, the term referred not only to skin disease, but also to the state of the ritual impurity and punishment for the sins.

Although the real nature of tzaraat remains unknown, the differential diagnosis might include the following: Psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, favus, dermatophyte infections, nummular dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, pityriasis rosea, crusted scabies, syphilis, impetigo, sycosis barbae, alopecia areata, furuncles, scabies, neurodermatitis, scarlet fever, lupus erythematosus, lichen sclerosus et atrophicus, folliculitis decalvans, morphea, sarcoidosis, and lichen planopilaris.

Leprosy became interchangeable with the biblical leprosy due to two inaccurate translations: The Hebrew tzaraat was first translated into Greek as leprosy in the sixth century, and later, the word leprosy was translated into Arabic as lepra in the ninth century.

'Mr. Duran, you are still a human being,' Richey told Duran after imposing his sentence. 'I hope you will understand that the court considers you such.' But attacks against the president at the executive mansion 'cannot happen in the United States of America,' Richey said. In addition to the charge of attempting to kill Clinton, Duran was also indicted on four counts of assaulting a federal officer, two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, two counts of use of a weapon during the commission of a crime and two counts of destruction of federal property. Combined, the charges will hold Duran in prison until 2035 when, at age 66, he will be eligible for five years of supervised release. Duran also was fined $3,200 the cost of repairing the bullet holes in the White House. Duran, 26, of Colorado Springs, Colo., was arrested on Oct. 29 after he opened fire on the White House while the president was in the executive mansion watching a Saturday afternoon football game on television.

Duran was charged on Nov. 17 with attempting to kill Clinton. Passers-by on busy Pennsylvania Avenue which has since been closed off to vehicle traffic scurried for cover as the gunman opened fire with a Chinese-made SKS semiautomatic assault rifle loaded with a 30- round clip of ammunition. Several citizens on the scene tackled Duran and Secret Service agents then subdued him and took him into custody. Two of the arresting agents were present in the courtroom Thursday to watch the sentencing. Neither Clinton nor anyone else was injured, but bullet holes were later found in the windows of the White House press area. 'My actions on Oct. 29 were irrational and wrong,' Duran said in a soft-spoken statement he read to the court. 'What I thought was the right thing to do was truly irrational. 'I'm sorry I not only ruined my future but that of my wife and my boy,' Duran said.

On May 25, 1995, a fired pizza delivery driver was arrested on assault and weapons charges after he scaled a White House fence with an unloaded gun and was tackled and shot by Secret Service agents. The very next day, an unarmed man jumped the White House fence and was immediately apprehended by Secret Service officers. Defense attorneys argued for a lighter sentence for Duran based on his difficult past. They cited an incident in 1991 in which Duran got into a fight at a bowling alley and then drove over a woman, fracturing her skull as an event that changed Duran. Duran, who was in the Army at the time of the incident, was sentenced to five years at Leavenworth Prison in Kansas. 'Clearly he became a changed young man at that point,' Kramer said. Prosecuting attorney Eric Dubelier painted Duran as a 'paranoid schizophrenic' who 'writes letters about violent homicidal and sexual fantasies.' 'There are a lot of people that start off with a tough life but still don't go out and try to kill the president,' Dubelier said.

I've been watching a channel on YouTube (Gutn Tog) since he is on La Palma covering the volcano. I also watched him for his coverage of the Icelandic volcano (he is an Icelander). One thing that has him very puzzled is, why does the volcano (on La Palma) stay relatively quiet during the day and then get very active at night.

Then I come on here today and see that the EQ's are in a grid pattern. My question is this: these recurring EQ's in the grid pattern, are they mainly occurring at night?
