Anti-Vaccine Passport Protesters Storm French Town Hall, Pull Down Macron Portrait.

Around 300 anti-vaccine passport protesters stormed the town hall of Chambéry, denouncing French measures to implement a vaccine passport.

The group had gathered in front of the courthouse at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday before heading for the town hall.

After noticing that the door to the town hall had been left open, the protesters entered, yelling various slogans, including, “No to the [vaccine] pass,” and “Macron must resign!” French broadcaster France Info reports.

The protesters then took down the official portrait of President Emmanuel Macron, a symbolic gesture that was also seen in late 2019 when climate activists stole the presidential portraits from some 130 town halls across France.

“The city of Chambéry condemns with the utmost firmness this intrusion,” the mayor’s office said in a statement, and added that it was not “tolerable to attack republican symbols and the symbolic place that is a city hall”.

According to France Info, the demonstrators only remained in the town hall for 10 to 15 minutes before departing. They then continued their demonstration in other parts of the town before attempting to march to a nearby expressway road, but were blocked by local gendarmes. It was the third protest against vaccine passports in the city in a week.

The protest comes just days after an alleged arson attack on a vaccination centre in the municipality of Urrugne in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques county.

Philippe Aramendi, the mayor of Urrugne, said: “It may be too early to know if we are dealing with anti-vaxxers, but if they are, it is saddening.”

Last weekend, over 100,000 people took to the streets to protest France’s vaccine passport policy, which will see people required to present a health pass to access certain businesses such as restaurants or engage in various forms of travel.

Business owners that do not check for the health pass could also be punished under the new policy, with fines of up to €45,000 (£38,487/$53,100) and a year in prison.

Farage: Far from Opening Up, We’re Locking Down, as 600,000 Pinged by NHS App

Brexit leader Nigel Farage has said that since ‘Freedom Day’ on Monday, England appears to be locking down rather than opening up, as hundreds of thousands of Britons are told to quarantine after being pinged by the NHS coronavirus app.

The National Health Service app alerts users if they have been in proximity to anyone, also with the phone app, who has tested positive for the Chinese coronavirus and instructs them to self-isolate. Recent weeks have seen an increasing number of people told to quarantine, giving rise to the term ‘pingdemic’. In the first week of July, the NHS app pinged more than 500,000 people; the following week, 600,000.

The pingdemic has resulted in staff shortages, including at petrol stations and supermarkets, with reports across the country of empty shelves, prompting Tobias Ellwood MP, the chairman of the defence select committee, to state that the army could be used to help if staff shortages continue.

“The urgency of staff shortages now impacting on supermarkets and, by extension, national food distribution, warrants a Cobra meeting today for which the deployment of the army to assist in HGV driver shortfall should be a last-resort option considered,” Mr Ellwood said on Thursday, according to The Times.

There are also staff absences in police forces, public sanitation services, and railway network control centres, including signallers.

Responding to the surge in self-isolation being prompted by the NHS app, Mr Farage said during his GB News evening programme on Thursday: “What a mess the whole thing is! I thought, with the early vaccine rollout, not only had Brexit been fully vindicated but that we put ourselves in a very advantageous position compared to other countries.”

Remarking on the hundreds of thousands advised to self-isolate this month, Farage said: “Far from opening up, we’re actually beginning a process of lockdown down. If we go on at this rate, goodness knows where we’ll be.”

Unlike orders from the NHS’s Test and Trace team, it is not a legal requirement to self-isolate if pinged by the app, with some employers reportedly instructing their staff to ignore the alerts if a PCR test shows a negative result. However, ministers have told Britons to follow the app’s orders to isolate for 10 days.

Reports also suggest that people are deleting the app in order to avoid being pinged, with a YouGov poll finding this week that 52 per cent of young people have either deleted the app or refused to use it when they should have, such as switching off the Bluetooth or avoided checking in to venues with the QR code. The poll found, as per the reports from The Times, that of the people that downloaded the app in the first place, 10 per cent have deleted it.

“Is it time to scrap the app?” Farage said. “I think it really is.”

“I think the app is now doing more harm than good,” he added.

Czech Senate Approves Amendment Granting Right to Bear Arms in Constitution

The senate of the Czech Republic has approved adding a right to self-defence with a weapon to its Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms following a successful petition campaign.

A total of 54 of the 74 senators voted to amend the charter, surpassing the needed three-fifths majority of votes, and will become law once signed by Czech president Milos Zeman, who has previously expressed support for a European Second Amendment and is unable to veto the constitutional change in any case.

The new section of the charter will read, “the right to defend one’s own life or the life of another person with a weapon is guaranteed under the conditions laid down by law,” broadcaster Czech Radio reports.

The amendment comes after a successful petition campaign that saw over 102,000 signatories, including constitutional officials, demand that a right to bear arms in self-defence be added to the country’s constitution in response to European Union moves to put continent-wide limits on the ownership of firearms and other weapons.

While the Czech Republic has previously been forced to implement European Commission regulations on firearms, the constitutional change should now prevent any EU directives restricting the right to bear arms for citizens and residents of the country.

The European Commission has argued that restricting firearms was needed to fight terrorism, but critics noted that terrorists have been found to mainly use illegal weapons.

The Czech Republic has fought against EU pushes for gun control for years, and President Miloš Zeman has been an ardent supporter of the right to bear arms, signing the petition that led to the constitutional change in 2018.

Zeman outraged journalists the year prior after he brandished a fake rifle during a press conference with the words “for journalists” inscribed on the side of it, despite the fact the only “ammunition” it contained being Becherovka liquor.

Contrary to European Union bureaucrats, the Czech leader has argued that European citizens should have a right to bear arms to defend themselves against terrorists.

Taliban Wants Afghan President to Step Down Before Ceasefire

A Taliban spokesman said women would have more rights under the new government than during earlier Taliban rule

In an interview with The Associated Press, a Taliban spokesman said there won’t be peace in Afghanistan until a new government is formed and President Ashraf Ghani steps down.

Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen called Ghani a “warmonger” and accused him of using his Tuesday speech on the Muslim holiday of Eid to call for an offensive against the Taliban. Shaheen also brought up allegations that the 2019 election Ghani won was fraudulent. Both Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah claimed victory in the election.

Shaheen said there must be an agreement on a new government that is acceptable to the Taliban and to other Afghans. If that happens, he insisted, “there will be no war.”

Shaheen said the Taliban does not want to monopolize power in any future government that might be formed. “I want to make it clear that we do not believe in the monopoly of power because any governments who [sought] to monopolize power in Afghanistan in the past, were not successful governments,” he said. “So we do not want to repeat that same formula.”

Many Soldiers Still Aren’t Vaccinated; What’s The Army’s Plan?

Thousands of soldiers are still not vaccinated against COVID-19, and Army leaders are moving to educate the unvaccinated as the deadly Delta variant sweeps through the country.

Col. Owen Price, the Fort Bragg Force Health Protection officer, said vaccine hesitancy mostly spurs from health concerns and latching onto misinformation mostly found on social media.

“There’s two camps,” Price told Military.com in an interview. “One is they just haven’t heard the message that resonates with them to overcome hesitancy. Whether that concerns pregnancy or side effects, long-term health effects are a big concern for some. The other camp is people who have just received a ton of misinformation, and it’s very hard to unseat that even when providing them facts.”

Price said soldiers who have come to recent education sessions on the vaccine are misinformed about it. He said in his experience, soldiers are usually not pedaling conspiracy theories surrounding the virus, but some have leaned on random, faulty information from social media, versus the science, and they are coming with concerns from a health conscious point of view. He said the key now is talking to soldiers individually and addressing their concerns respectfully.

“This has been an uptick recently, with soldiers coming to education sessions with a list they found online – with ingredients such as metals and plastics, which aren’t in the vaccine at all,” Price said. “One soldier had an outlandish figure of people that have died from the vaccine but couldn’t explain where they got that information from. There’s crazy stuff out there.”

But some soldiers have health concerns, even if experts say the research doesn’t back up those fears. Pvt. Abegail Finck, who is stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, has a family history of an autoimmune disease she’s afraid the vaccine could inflame. She is also pregnant and concerned whether the vaccines could harm her or her baby.

“For me, I’ll keep wearing the mask to work,” she said. “ This being my first child, I didn’t want to risk anything.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the vaccines are safe for pregnant women and recommend meeting with a health-care provider to go over concerns.

For other soldiers, some are concerned with having feverish symptoms for a day or two, which could mean missing out on training days or not being able to attend a school that will help them with promotion.

“My unit tried to get us all vaccinated, but I was going to Air Assault school soon,” a non-commissioned officer with the Texas National Guard told Military.com on the condition of anonymity.

Air Assault is a grueling 10-day course where soldiers have to pass numerous physical challenges such as a long ruck march and obstacle course.

“I probably should still go get it, but I didn’t want to be knocked out or be the one in a million dude who gets the heart problem, be benched forever,” he said referring to myocarditis,. a rare heart inflammation condition associated with vaccines.

Annoyed With Israeli Strikes, Russia To Invest In Syrian Air Defence: Report

Russia is unsatisfied with Israel’s repeated attacks on Syria and is stepping up support for the Syrian Arab Air Defense Forces (SyAADF), a well-informed Russian source told the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper on July 24.

The Israeli Air Force carried out two attacks on Syria this week. On July 19, a series of airstrikes hit targets in the northern governorate of Aleppo. On July 21, several airstrikes targeted al-Daba air base in the central governorate of Homs.

Losses were reported after both attacks. Nevertheless, the spokesman for the Russian Reconciliation Center claimed that most Israeli missiles were intercepted by the SyAADF.

The Russian source told Asharq Al-Awsat that the recent statements were related to the talks launched with the US following the first summit between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden in June.

“Moscow received a confirmation that Washington does not welcome the continuous Israeli raids, according to the source,” Asharq Al-Awsat source said. “The rhetoric was escalated against any Israeli military action targeting Syria’s sovereignty, and in violation of international resolutions.”

According to the source, Russia has not only toughen up its rhetoric against Israel’s repeated attacks on Syria, but also stepped up its support for the SyAADF.

“The fact that all the launched missiles were destroyed indicates a fundamental change in handling this issue,” the source said, adding that “Israel’s air force has not entered the Syrian airspace and carries out its attacks from neighboring lands, but the attacks are no longer effective because the Syrian anti-aircraft systems have been enhanced, and Moscow provided Damascus with air defense equipment.”

The unnamed source went on to reveal that Russian military advisors had supported SyAADF personnel during the last Israeli attacks.

Russia is apparently trying to set clear rules with Israel, which has been stepping up its attacks on Syria. So far, Israel has failed to achieve any of its declared goals in Syria. Moscow’s pressure will further complicate the situation for Tel Aviv.
