The university stands by the study but said the article was leading to the spread of 'misinformation'

Last week, Johns Hopkins University published a now-deleted article explaining a study examining the effects of the novel coronavirus on United States death totals using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Genevieve Briand, the assistant program director of the Applied Economics master's degree program at Johns Hopkins, determined, in the study, that there have been 1.7 million deaths in the U.S. between March 2020 and September 2020, 12% (or roughly 200,000) of which have been coronavirus-related. Briand posits that the only way to understand the significance of the U.S. coronavirus death rate is by comparing it to the number of total deaths in the country. According to Briand, who compared the total deaths per age category from both before and after the onset of the global pandemic, the death rate of older people stayed the same before and after coronavirus. "The reason we have a higher number of reported COVID-19 deaths among older individuals than younger individuals is simply because every day in the U.S. older individuals die in higher numbers than younger individuals," wrote Briand.

She also noted that between 50,000 and 70,000 deaths are seen both before and after the emergence of the virus, meaning that, according to her analysis, coronavirus has had no effect on the percentage of total deaths of older people, nor has it increased the total number of deaths in the category. These results contradict the way most people see the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, which disproportionately affects the elderly population. Briand believes, after reviewing the numbers, that coronavirus deaths are being over-exaggerated. After seeing that in 2020, coronavirus-related deaths exceeded deaths from heart disease the leading cause of death in the U.S. for many years prior Briand began to suspect that the coronavirus death toll figure may be misleading. Briand found that "the total decrease in deaths by other causes almost exactly equals the increase in deaths by COVID-19," according to the original JHU newsletter. "If [the COVID-19 death toll] was not misleading at all, what we should have observed is an increased number of heart attacks and increased COVID-19 numbers. But a decreased number of heart attacks and all the other death causes doesn't give us a choice but to point to some misclassification," said Briand. A Melbourne couple has been accused of registering "phantom children" at a childcare centre they operate in order to claim millions of dollars in government payments they are not entitled to.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) have charged Ola Ouda, 42, and Amjad Shehada, 47, both from Doncaster East, with serious fraud.

They face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Three other people, including two childcare educators, have also been charged with serious fraud in the wake of AFP officers conducting raids on several properties in Victoria and New South Wales.

AFP Commander Todd Hunter said investigators spoke to more than 70 educators and parents during the course of their investigation and it was likely more people would be charged.

"It is alleged the registered provider of the Melbourne family daycare business, together with a number of co-accused, defrauded the Commonwealth-funded childcare subsidy payments by registering children who did not attend childcare to make false claims," he said.

"Phantom children, if you will."

The alleged fraud, which authorities say raked in $15 million, included exaggerating the hours some children attended child care or before- and after-school care.

The AFP said the couple's business was one of, if not the biggest, claimant and receiver of childcare supplement payments in the country.

Nearly 700kg of ketamine powder was last week seized in a raid carried out by law enforcement at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, the Criminal Investigation Bureau said yesterday.

The ketamine powder, which has an estimated market value of NT$1 billion (US$34.71 million), was the biggest shipment of illegal drugs ever smuggled into Taiwan by air, the bureau said.

Acting on a tip-off, authorities on Thursday last week intercepted the Hong Kong shipment at the airport, CIB Deputy Commissioner Teng Hsueh-hsin told a news conference in Taipei. he officers also arrested a pickup driver and three customs officers believed to have been involved, Teng said. During questioning, the customs officers denied any involvement and were later released on bail, Teng added.

The driver surnamed Wang (王) said that he was hired to deliver a cargo, but had no idea what it was, the bureau said.

In a closely contested New York Congressional District, Republican Challenger Claudia Tenney led Democrat Anthony Brindisi by a massive 27,000 vote margin before the absentee votes were counted.

Now Brindisi leads by just 12 or 13 votes after campaigns appeared before a judge to contest hundreds of absentee ballots.

But there are massive controversies about these suspect mail-in votes as officials have already found ballots cast by multiple dead voters.

The nightmare of contested and fraudulent mail-in votes that Donald Trump warned Americans about came true in this race.

“Madison County Attorney Tina Wayland-Smith reported that election officials there disqualified absentee ballots filed by three “deceased” voters” in a filing with state Supreme Court Justice Scott Del Conte, who is overseeing the count in Oswego County,” the New York Post reported.

“This is a known problem of voting by mail. It should be investigated,” Doug Kellner, co-chairman of the state board of elections stated.

“It is an election fraud. It’s a felony,” Kellner added.

The Fake News Media claims voter fraud is nonexistent and it is a myth that dead people cast votes in elections.

The Frightening Ease Of Government Overreach

On the eve of Thanksgiving, I am reading the news as I have my coffee, as is my regular morning routine, and much of what I read is about the recently reimposed restrictions on multiple aspects of our lives due to COVID-19. The mayor of Los Angeles is calling for people to cancel “non-essential” travel, with the threat of fines and citations for noncompliance. We’ve seen the same thing for several months in several other states, notably New York, New Jersey, and Michigan. And it is all being done in the name of public safety. They’re only concerned with our well-being…right?

Given that the left is so focused on science — mainly when it helps leftists’ agenda to do so, mind you — I will cite a recent study from the Annals of Internal Medicine, also cited in an article on American Thinker, that found that the real “death rate” of COVID-19, measured as the Infection Fatality Rate (IFR) is actually 0.26%, or about a quarter of one percent. Matt Rowe’s article does a good job of describing fully the definition of IFR, so I won’t repeat it all here, but it’s essentially the actual rate of death caused by COVID-19 specifically without other underlying causes.

The point is that the science, time and again, does not seem to support the extreme reactions by those in power. The thing that bothers me is how quickly and easily our mayors and governors have used the pandemic as an excuse to flex their dictatorial muscles, and what frightens and angers me is how quickly and easily they’ve wiped their collective bottoms with the Constitution, with the requisite flush of our rights once their business is completed.

Invasive forms required at the airport, COVID checkpoints at key crossing points in and out of New York City, police checkpoints, and mandatory quarantine periods are all part of the plan to “keep us safe.” Neighbors and even children are being encouraged to spy on and report those who would dare oppose the Almighty. I’ve read enough about 1930s and early 1940s–era Germany to recognize what’s going on. Will those who disobey be forced to wear a distinguishing mark of some kind on their clothing?

What is disturbing to me is how quickly and easily so many people fall right into line and accept every new edict and imposition on their freedoms. As in 1930s–1940s Germany, those who were silent and compliant were in many ways complicit in the crimes. We’ve all heard the famous poem by Martin Niemoller, “First They Came for the Jews.” It feels eerily similar to me.
