U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Jump to 742,000, Worse Than Expected

New weekly jobless claims jumped by 31,000 to 742,000 in the week ended November 14, the Department of Labor said Thursday.

Economists had expected jobless claims to inch up to 710,000 from the 709,000 initially reported a week ago. The previous week’s level was revised up by 2,000 to 711,000.

This is the first week of claims following the U.S. presidential election and may be viewed as a proxy for business reaction to the election.

Jobless claims—which are a proxy for layoffs—remain at extremely high levels. Prior to the pandemic, the highest level of claims was 695,000 hit in October of 1982. In March of 2009, at the depths of the financial crisis recession, jobless claims peaked at 665,000.

Claims hit a record 6.87 million for the week of March 27, more than ten times the previous record. Through spring and early summer, each subsequent week had seen claims decline. But in late July, the labor market appeared to stall and claims hovered around one million throughout August, a level so high it was never recorded before the pandemic struck. Claims moved down again in September and hade made slow, if steady, progress until the election.

New restrictions on businesses aimed at stemming the resurgence of coronavirus are likely contributing to the rise in layoffs. Some states and cities have imposed new curfews and discouraged people from leaving home for non-essential reasons.

Claims can be volatile so economists like to look at the four-week average for a better view of the health of the labor market. This declined 13,750 to 742,000.

Continuing claims—those made after the initial filing, representing ongoing unemployment—get reported with a week’s lag. For the week ended November 7, these came in at 6,372,000, a decrease of 429,000. The four-week moving average for continuing claims fell to 7,054,500, a decrease of 525,000 from the previous week’s revised average.

In addition to regular unemployment benefits, the federal government this year created two new programs to provide aid to those not usually eligible for state programs. During the week ending October 31, 8.7 million individuals claimed benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, which provides aid to self-employed workers, business owners, and gig workers. Another 4.4 million individuals claimed benefits under the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, which extends unemployment for an additional 13-weeks after state benefits run out. That’s an indicator that more workers are staying unemployed for longer.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending October 31 were in California (8.3), Hawaii (8.3), New Mexico (8.0), Nevada (7.6), Georgia (6.5), Pennsylvania (6.4), Alaska (6.2), Massachusetts (6.2), District of Columbia (6.0), and Illinois (5.7).

'Republicans are not the party of people who impeach just because they disagree with someone'

The Republican leader in the Michigan House of Representatives ended talk of impeachment proceedings against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday amid an ongoing debate about the governor's authority to issue coronavirus restrictions.

Earlier, three Republican members of the state House introduced a resolution for impeachment against Whitmer, charging that her executive orders were unconstitutional and accusing the governor of "using state resources to reward political allies."

"Today I introduced Articles of Impeachment against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer," Rep. Beau LaFave tweeted Wednesday.

"The four articles of impeachment against Gov. The Michigan Constitution's impeachment process is similar to how impeachment works at the federal level. The state House of Representatives would file articles of impeachment against the governor and hold a vote. If a simple majority of lawmakers votes to impeach, then the state Senate would conduct a trial. Two-thirds of state senators are needed to convict.

But according to House Speaker Lee Chatfield, a Republican, impeachment proceedings will not advance in the House while he is the leader.

"It's no secret that I have disagreed with this governor. I have debated a lot with this governor. I have many differences with how the governor has handled COVID. We have a time and place to deal with differences — that's at the ballot box. The voters of the state of Michigan will have a chance to choose in 2022," Chatfield said in a statement reported by WOOD-TV.

"Republicans are not the party of people who impeach just because they disagree with someone. We just saw that in Washington. We're not going to do that in the state of Michigan. With the facts that we have, the impeachment resolution is not going to get a vote on the House floor. It's not the right way to deal with this situation or this disagreement.

"The idea of impeachment would face another, likely insurmountable, obstacle even if it did proceed," Chatfield continued. "In the Senate there are 22 Republican and 16 Democrats. It would take 25 votes to convict. Even if the process was to make it out of the House, which it clearly will not, getting the votes in the Senate would be difficult if not impossible."

'Imagine There's No Countries': Biden Pick For Attorney General Advocates Fully 'Open Borders'

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who Fox News is told is being considered to serve as attorney general in the upcoming Biden administration, once said that illegal immigration should be decriminalized. This is one of a number of radical stances he has taken on the subject.

Becerra is one of the individuals President-elect Joe Biden is considering to be the nation’s top lawmaker – along with Alabama Sen. Doug Jones and former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, Fox News is told. While other names are under consideration, the source told Fox News that Jones, Yates and Becerra are most likely to be appointed. Becerra previously served in the House of Representatives from 1993 to 2017.

If appointed, Becerra would bring a significantly different approach to questions related to illegal immigration, where he has long taken left-wing

positions – a sore thorn in the Trump administration’s side on the issue.

Last year, he told HuffPost that he favored decriminalizing illegal immigration ,a stance that is still a fringe position in the Democratic Party, despite its lurch to the left.

“They are not criminals,” Becerra said. “They haven’t committed a crime against someone, and they are not acting violently or in a way that’s harmful to people. And I would argue they are not harming people indirectly either.”

He joined a handful of politicians in the Democratic Party who wanted illegal immigration to be a civil offense, rather than criminal.

“If you call them criminals, it’s a lot easier to get people to turn against them than if you call them undocumented immigrants,” Becerra claimed.

However, a year earlier, he had warned of prosecution for employers who helped Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with its enforcement operations in the state – warning of fines up to $10,000.

“It’s important, given these rumors that are out there, to let people know – more specifically today, employers – that if they voluntarily start giving up information about their employees or access to their employees in ways that contradict our new California laws, they subject themselves to actions by my office,” he said, according to the Sacramento Bee. “We will prosecute those who violate the law.”

Becerra has been a strong supporter of DACA, and has taken a number of actions to keep the program, which protects some immigrants brought to the country illegally as children from deportation, even as President Trump has tediously fought to end it.

If he were picked as AG, it would be yet another sign of how the Biden administration intends to take a dramatic swing away from the Trump administration’s approach to immigration.

From our source: The US government, once they determined that this Dominion server was involved in switching votes, then the intelligence community began a search for the server and discovered that the server was in Germany. They had to request that the government of Germany cooperate in allowing this seizure of this server.

The appropriate documents required to affect that kind of seizure were put in place, signed off on, and it appears there was also US military support in this operation. By getting ahold of the server they now are going to have the direct evidence of when they were instructed to stop counting. They will also discover who gave the direction to stop counting and who initiated the algorithm that started switching votes. The CIA was completely excluded from this operation.

Nursing home residents were 'plunged into despair by prolonged isolation' because of the coronavirus pandemic

Experts found that tens of thousands of people in nursing homes "have died from neglect and sorrow related to the pandemic," according to an eye-opening report from the Associated Press.

The report stated that there have been more than 97,000 residents of U.S. nursing homes who have died during the coronavirus pandemic. A nursing home expert analyzed 15,000 U.S. long-term care facilities and estimates that for every two coronavirus victims in nursing homes, there is a person who died prematurely of other causes.

The report stated that the "excess deaths" in nursing homes could total over 40,000 since March.

"Interviews with dozens of people across the country reveal swelling numbers of less clear-cut deaths that doctors believe have been fueled not by neglect but by a mental state plunged into despair by prolonged isolation listed on some death certificates as 'failure to thrive,'" the AP reported.

Nursing home watchdogs claim that they have been "flooded" with reports of nursing home inhabitants suffering from neglect, including people being "kept in soiled diapers so long their skin peeled off, left with bedsores that cut to the bone, and allowed to wither away in starvation or thirst."

The article featured several surviving family members of the victims who have died at long-term care facilities for alleged neglect. Barbara Leak-Watkins' 87-year-old Army veteran father, Alex Leak, went for a check-up in February, where he reportedly "had gone so long without water his potassium levels rocketed and his kidneys started failing."

Leak-Watkins, who is from North Carolina, said her father served in the military and always stressed the need to stay hydrated.

"The facility is short-staffed … underpaid and overworked," Leak-Watkins told the AP, adding that if the nursing home "can't provide you with liquids and fluids to hydrate yourself, there's something wrong."

According to his death certificate, Leak died two weeks later of lactic acidosis, a buildup of lactic acid that can cause liver and kidney damage, which can be fatal.

Donald Wallace, a 75-year-old living at a nursing home in Alabama, "became so malnourished and dehydrated that he dropped to 98 pounds and looked to his son like he'd been in a concentration camp." Wallace suffered from septic shock and had "E. coli in his body from his own feces."

"He couldn't even hold his head up straight because he had gotten so weak," his son, Kevin Amerson, said. "They stopped taking care of him. They abandoned him."

Stephen Kaye, a professor at the Institute on Health and Aging at the University of California, San Francisco, who conducted the analysis for the Associated Press, explained how the COVID-19 pandemic affected long-term care residents who weren't directly suffering from coronavirus.

"The healthcare system operates kind of on the edge, just on the margin, so that if there's a crisis, we can't cope," Kaye said. "There are not enough people to look after the nursing home residents."

Michigan Republican who balked at certifying election results says Trump called her

A GOP member of the canvassing board in Wayne County, Mich., said President Trump called her earlier this week after she and another Republican on the board initially refused to certify election results showing President-elect Joe Biden as the winner of the presidential election.

Monica Palmer confirmed to The Washington Post that Trump called her on Tuesday night after she and William Hartmann balked at approving the election results. The two eventually relented and certified the results, but on Wednesday both Palmer and Hartmann sought to rescind their certification.

Palmer, who did not respond to multiple requests for comment from The Hill, told the Post that Trump called "to make sure I was safe."

“His concern was about my safety and that was really touching. He is a really busy guy and to have his concern about my safety was appreciated,” she told the news outlet.

Palmer denied that she felt pressured by Trump to reverse course after agreeing to certify the vote. She indicated the two discussed the results in different states, but "we really didn’t discuss the details of the certification."

Wayne County, a Democratic stronghold, is home to Detroit and voted overwhelmingly for Biden. The Trump campaign on Thursday morning withdrew its lawsuit in the state, saying that it achieved its goal of delaying certification in Wayne County.

But Michigan officials have said that Palmer and Hartmann voted to certify the results on Tuesday night and they will not be able to rescind that approval.

Hartmann did not respond to a request for comment about whether he'd spoken to Trump.

Still, Trump's intervention is the latest red flag in his attempts to undo the results of an election that he lost to Biden. He has spent the two weeks since Election Day sowing doubt about the reliability of the vote, attacking election workers and insisting that he won states that he did not win.
