Judge agrees to postpone release of secret Ghislaine Maxwell files

A Manhattan federal judge on Wednesday evening agreed to postpone unsealing depositions related to the sex life of Ghislaine Maxwell until the alleged madam can file an appeal.

The order by Judge Loretta Preska will, for two business days, block the release of documents that relate to a deposition Maxwell gave as part of a now-settled civil defamation lawsuit filed against her in 2015 by Jeffrey Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre.

Madeleine McCann police dig up basement beneath foundations of demolished building on Christian Brueckner's old allotment that has remained untouched since the year toddler vanished

Madeleine McCann investigators have found a hidden cellar at the German allotment where kidnapping suspect Christian Brueckner allegedly lived in 2007.

Police discovered the basement in the foundations of a building which neighbours say was demolished in late 2007 or 2008, shortly after Brueckner left.

The cellar was not filled in when the building above it was torn down, meaning it could have been untouched since the year Madeleine vanished from her Praia da Luz holiday apartment in May 2007.

Detectives have been removing slabs of building materials in a two-day search of the vegetable garden, accompanied by specialist search dogs that look for dead bodies and computer equipment.

Officers were seen carrying large blue bags away from the site during the search on Wednesday.

Wolfgang Kossack, 73, who owns the plot next to Brueckner's former allotment, told MailOnline that Brueckner had lived off-grid at the site in 2007 and talked about planning his return to southern Europe.

Mr Kossack said he only realised the link to Brueckner this week when police started digging up the allotment, saying: 'I remembered his face from the pictures in the news. And I remember his van and his dogs. I had completely forgotten about him up until then.'

Last month a former friend of Brueckner reportedly claimed the kidnap suspect told him he had a cellar at a different property which he wanted to line with metal sheets 'like Josef Fritzl's'.

Brueckner - who is currently in jail in northern Germany - is suspected of killing Madeleine after she vanished in May 2007 - the same year that Brueckner lived at the allotment.

Local media says the search at the allotment is due to end tonight, but police have not revealed what they are looking for or whether they have found it.

Chinese Immigrant Sues University for Sanctioning Tiananmen Post

Fordham threatened student for posing with legal rifle

A Fordham University student kicked off campus for posing with his legally owned firearm filed a lawsuit on July 23 alleging the school violated its commitment to free expression.

Rising senior Austin Tong, a Chinese immigrant who posted the picture in honor of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, filed a lawsuit against Fordham, the school's president, and the dean of students. The suit alleges the university violated its free expression covenant with students by disciplining Tong for "lawful, constitutionally protected, and non-threatening social media posts on Instagram."

"Fordham's policies and rules, as well as basic First Amendment jurisprudence, make it abundantly clear that uncomfortable or unpleasant impact on a speaker's audience is not a proper ground to restrain the speech in question," the lawsuit reads.

The suit calls on the school to annul all disciplinary sanctions, admit that Tong's social media posts are a permitted exercise of free speech under Fordham's speech code, and award relief for the breach of contract between Fordham and Tong.

In its mission statement, Fordham guarantees the freedom of inquiry among other freedoms, but the explicit promise of free speech can be found in the school's demonstration policy.

"Each member of the University has a right to freely express his or her positions and to work for their acceptance whether they assent to or dissent from existing situations in the University or society," the policy reads.

Tong was told in a disciplinary letter from the university that he cannot return to campus and must complete his degree online while his peers return to campus. Tong cannot hold a leadership position on campus, must write an apology note to the school, and must complete a bias training or face suspension or possible expulsion.

The lawsuit alleges the sanctions against Tong are "damaging and humiliating" for the student as well as "draconian." The disciplinary actions force Tong to choose between his beliefs and a degree from his university of choice.

"These sanctions have placed Tong in an untenable position," the lawsuit reads. "He must either (1) abandon his principled beliefs, forfeit his right to lawful expression, and submit to Fordham's unconscionable discipline, or (2) face suspension or expulsion from Fordham, which would severely damage his future academic and employment prospects."

Tong told the Washington Free Beacon he believed he had a good relationship with dean of students Keith Eldredge before posting his Instagram photos. "Not even a Chinese university would do this to their students," he said.

The university did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Inspector general report complicates states' claim they need billions more

State and local governments have spent less than a quarter of the relief funds earmarked to help them fight the coronavirus, a recently released report from the Treasury Department indicates.

Funds from the $150 billion Coronavirus Relief Fund, created by Congress as part of the two-trillion-dollar CARES Act and meant to help defray public health costs, appear largely unused according to the Treasury Department's inspector general. Some states have used less than 5 percent of the funds earmarked for them, including states like New Jersey and Connecticut, which bore the brunt of early coronavirus cases.

The surprising revelation complicates states' claims that they need a hundred-billion-dollar federal bailout to ensure their solvency in the coming months. The question of what money, if any, states should receive in the next round of coronavirus stimulus is likely to be a subject of hot debate in coming weeks, and the inspector general's report challenges Democrats' contention that more money is needed, particularly compared with Republicans' proposal to free up preexisting and evidently unused funds.

The data indicate that the coronavirus relief fund is heavily undersubscribed throughout the country. Just three states—California, New York, and Colorado—have used more than half of the funds allocated to their state and local governments. By contrast, 23 states have used less than 10 percent of their funding, while 11 have used less than half. Of the nearly $2 billion earmarked for South Carolina, the state reports using just $763,000.

Money available through the coronavirus relief fund was disbursed based on population, with a floor allocation of $1.25 billion per state. Some locales that were heavily hit by the coronavirus appear to have used funds extensively—New York City, for example, has used 99.4 percent of its money—but others, like New Jersey and Connecticut, have not.

The funds are earmarked exclusively for use on public health issues—a subject of contention, as many states see the impending fiscal meltdown instigated by the current recession as an even bigger challenge than the coronavirus itself. The National Governors Association has asked for $500 billion in the next round of coronavirus stimulus.

Democrats want to give it to them—Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's (D., Calif.) proposal for the latest round of relief includes $540 billion for a state-and-local bailout. But Republicans are more wary, fearing that federal bailout dollars will be used to shore up flagging state pensions already almost bankrupted by years of malinvestment.

The GOP's solution to this problem, unveiled Monday evening, is to remove the requirement that the Coronavirus Relief Fund only be used for public health issues—thereby freeing up an apparently undersubscribed source of funding without committing to more spending on top of what already appeared in the CARES Act.

Whether or not to provide the states with general funding, and how much of it, is likely to be a major subject of dispute in this week's congressional negotiations over another round of coronavirus stimulus. That will add to disagreements over unemployment insurance and the rapidly increasing size of the federal deficit. The result is likely to be the most acrimonious round of negotiation yet.

Tom Hanks Questions the Patriotism of Americans Who Don’t Wear Masks

Actor Tom Hanks has slammed Americans refusing to wear masks, again, amid the coronavirus pandemic, questioning their patriotism.

“As somebody who’s gone through this and knows firsthand this is not a hoax, how do you feel when you see people not wearing masks out there?” Colbert asked Hanks, who is currently promoting his latest film Greyhound.

“Are they Americans?” Hanks responded. “You know, I don’t get it “It’s literally the least you can do… a mask and wash your hands, and try to stay 6 feet away from a person. Is this impossible now?”

Earlier this month, Hanks said “Shame on you,” to those opposed to wearing masks, according to a report by People. “If you can’t wear a mask and wash your hands and social-distance, I’ve got no respect for you.”

Hanks also criticized at the Trump administration’s handling of the pandemic, arguing that their position has left “nothing but question marks” about their official position and the steps people should be taking.

“Well, I must say, I grew up looking to our leaders for calm and informed guidance and I don’t think we’ve got that,” he told The Guardian.

In his interview with Colbert, the Forrest Gump star went on to make grandiose comparisons to George Washington’s leadership during the American Revolutionary War and drivers refusing to obey the highway code:

I think of George Washington’s troops at Valley Forge. If you asked them to wear a mask, they would love it because it would keep them a little bit warm. And they would have washed their hands if the snows were not freezing. They would have been happy to do that.”

MONT BELVIEU, Texas (KTRK) – Firefighters have contained a fire from an explosion at Energy Transfer facility in Mont Belvieu, east of Houston.

According to the city's police department, the apparent "industrial incident" happened Wednesday at the Lone Star NGL facility on West Winfree.

It's not immediately known what set off the blast, and there's no known injuries at the time.

The police department added State Highway 146 has been shut down from FM-1942 to FM-565 while crews respond to the fire.

Mont Belvieu is located just north of Interstate 10 just east of Baytown and the greater Houston area.

The area is rich with natural gas facilities like Lone Star NGL.

In recent years China has also avoided using the number 4 in aircraft registrations. An example is China Southern Airlines, with their A330s. Zuckerberg admits Facebook suppresses ‘hate speech’ BEFORE it’s seen by anyone

Facebook censors almost 90 percent of ‘hate speech’ before it’s allowed to circulate, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told Congress at Wednesday’s Big Tech hearing, responding to pressure from Democrats to submit to the advertiser boycott.

“We’re able to proactively identify 89 percent of the hate speech that we take down before, I think, it’s even seen by other people,” Zuckerberg told the Antitrust Subcommittee of the US House of Representatives on Wednesday.

The statement was in response to Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Maryland) pressuring Facebook to “join the civil rights movement” by submitting to the demands of the Stop Hate For Profit campaign, an advertising boycott accusing Facebook of tolerating “widespread hate” on the platform.

Facebook has been under growing pressure since the 2016 election, with Democrats blaming it for Hillary Clinton’s loss to Donald Trump. Raskin repeated those accusations at the hearing.

A month on, Hong Kong banks caught between US and China sanctions

HONG KONG – In the first month since Beijing imposed a sweeping new national security law on Hong Kong, banks in the Asian financial hub have scrutinized their client rosters to reduce the risk of repercussions from China or the U.S.

Joshua Wong, one of Hong Kong's best-known pro-democracy activists, was recently questioned by HSBC over the origins of funds deposited into his account. Although Wong has held an HSBC account for over a decade, the London-based lender has never before made such an inquiry, he said. Wong suspects banks in Hong Kong have been monitoring social media postings of activists ever since the national security law went into effect on June 30. The legislation outlaws activities that would cause national division or political unrest, and targets financial support received by offenders. "Our money laundering unit is looking into activists and other subjects with political backgrounds," said an executive at a major bank operating in Hong Kong. Lenders are not just wary of transactions involving activists. In March, a U.S. bank informed Bernard Chan, the top adviser to Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, that the institution was closing his account. The U.S. passed legislation in July that opens up sanctions against financial groups that deal with individuals involved in violating Hong Kong's self-governance. The penalties include exclusion from dollar settlements, a step that would significantly impact the affected lenders.

Although the action taken against Chan happened prior to the passing of the Hong Kong security bill, it reflects the mood of an industry sensitive to political risks. Hong Kong financial authorities have repeatedly said banks have little to worry about regarding the security law. The Securities and Futures Commission says it is not aware of any aspect of the legislation that "would affect or alter the existing ways" in which the financial sector operates. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority says the law will not impact normal businesses. However, the risk of being caught between the U.S. and China is growing for global companies and financial institutions.

Some enterprises have started to respond to the twin pressure. Naver, South Korea's biggest internet services company, has begun to back up user data in Singapore rather than Hong Kong. The New York Times newspaper decided to relocate part of its Hong Kong offices to Seoul. Meanwhile, China is focusing on bolstering Hong Kong. At the end of June, the government in Beijing launched a pilot program facilitating the cross-border purchase of wealth management products. "They probably don't want to be told that [Hong Kong's] status as a financial center was downgraded by the national security law," said a financial industry source. Since April, $14 billion has flowed into Hong Kong, according to the Monetary Authority. Blockbuster initial public offerings by JD.com and other Chinese enterprises spurred this influx.

Ant Group, the financial arm of tech giant Alibaba Group Holding, recently announced plans for an IPO in Hong Kong as well. The aggregate market capitalization of the city's bourse rose to the highest in the world in rankings for July. Financial transactions with China and the rest of the world will continue to grow, Joseph Yam, the former head of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, said in a lecture Wednesday. He also said China needs to diversify its fund procurement sources, and that Hong Kong is still strong in that area.

Yam added that the U.S. financial sanctions will turn out to be a double-edged sword, but said he thinks Washington will be wise enough not to take those steps.
