->When I say this is a lifeless soulless place. You must imagine my new context to really understand it. Staying in a hotel with only one, perhaps a handful, of other guest(s) is a rather remarkable sense of living amid misery in real life.

Yes, it’s like a living example of The Shining, sans the death-knock of the twins in the middle of the night. That is correct. Trump International DC – and NO GUESTS. It’s a desolate, depressing, empty dystopian hotel nightmare hidden from all normal people in America including me. I had no idea the metastasized rot had already spread to the central nervous system. Eric needs to sell this place, and fast – it’s over.

Restaurants closed. Everything closed. Lights out. DARK. Want to eat, go to the grocery store and hope for bologna and some bread. Everything on television/internet is a lie. I know, I’m here. They must import stand-in’s for POTUS visits to this place.

From what I can tell the DC mayor has targeted her closures in a manner as to inflict the maximum damage on Trump properties and holdings. I would estimate Trump International DC is bleeding around $100k per day currently/ perhaps more… depending on how much air conditioning they shut down.

DC as a whole is the same. An 8:00pm walk and you see nothing… a city completely devoid of life…. no cars… no people… nothing. A few rats scurrying from sidewalk to planter shelf, and a few scooters laying sideways in the middle of the sidewalk with ever dimming green circles as the batteries pulsate and run out.

I mean this town is dead.

The word misery is so far removed from the depressed stares amid the soulless eyes, that it would take a thousand years of bliss for a glimmer of hope to reappear. This place is an abhorrent Potemkin village of what appears on the nightly news about it.

This is my first visit as a non-tourist. So I am able to see the people who are attempting to manage their way through this nightmare. It is far, far worse than anything you can imagine.

Be thankful for your local debate about schools opening, wearing masks and assorted nuance. This is not that.

This town is the hollowed carcass of a cockroach still moving from the maggots that have taken the remaining source of nutrition. Every eye behind the mask shows misery, fear, and disconnection from the world we know… you know.

It’s bizarre and even though I have been here many times before, this time I simply cannot describe it adequately. DC is lost. Lost not because it has fallen ill to some COVID-19 infection, but literally lost to the premise of our nation’s capitol.

One is supposed to believe that Attorney General William Barr is in charge of the Department of Justice and that on May 14, 2019, he appointed John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, to conduct the inquiry to examine the origins of the “Trump/Russia investigation” and determine if intelligence collection involving the Trump campaign was “lawful and appropriate” (Obamagate).

To date, there is nothing to show from the Barr/Durham effort.

Judicial Watch has uncovered and published reams of material through litigation and use of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). That work has been a years-long effort – often fighting the Trump/Barr Justice Department to release records the American public is owed by statute. Members of Congress have released documents and reports. Most recently, Senator Lindsey Graham has finally produced something for the public’s consumption after years of talking about accountability and holding hearings. Acting ODNI Richard Grenell released dozens of Russia probe records. Again – these releases are practically “historical” in nature. They come years after the subject events. That is quite unlike the lightening-fast Intelligence Community Inspector General (phony) complaint over Ukraine that saw President Trump impeached by the House of Representatives in roughly two months. It seems like there are differing standards and timelines for “justice” in official Washington, DC.

Seasoned investigators and attorneys can take the publicly available records and assemble sufficient facts, documentation and evidence to meet the legal threshold (“probable cause”) for successfully presenting a bill of indictment to a grand jury. Like most discretionary decisions and exercises of governmental power, it really comes down to political will. Do Barr and/or Durham have the stomach to seek the indictment of people like James Comey, John Brennan, Andy McCabe and (many) others?

Indictments have a way of getting a target’s attention. They focus the mind. Perhaps the indictment of certain key persons would result in a sudden and compelling desire for them to be forthright and cooperative with prosecutors? Various former government officials may wish to explain what really happened and who really knew what and when. Lesser characters on the DC stage may seek greater billing or not be happy with their role as a patsy. No doubt others would resort to having “no specific recollection at this time.” That’s OK. Prosecutors can still get to proof beyond a reasonable doubt, even with faulty memories.

Colorado to begin mass testing poop to help detect COVID-19 outbreaks

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (KDVR) — Colorado may soon be able to detect COVID-19 outbreaks in the state several days before anyone even feels sick.

The key to early detection and early warning systems may come from an unlikely source: the toilet.

“If there’s an increase in the number of infected people, the first place that you’re going to see that is actually in the sewage,” Colorado State University professor of microbiology Carol Wilucz told FOX31.

“The reason that we get a heads-up and early warning is that if you’re infected with COVID itactually starts shedding in the feces within a couple of days,where the actual respiratory symptoms don’t start for like a week, 10 days,” she said.

Wilucz has been working since the middle of May leading a research team at CSU to develop a system to do large-scale testing of sewage to detect potential COVID-19 hotspots. Fort Collins company GT Molecular is also playing a key role in the project.

In June, they began collecting samples from Fort Collins waste water treatment facilities to make sure their test is ready to roll out across the Front Range.

With funding from both CSU and the State of Colorado, by the end of July, Wilucz’s team will be collecting raw sewage samples two times per week from 19 facilities between Fort Collins and Colorado Springs, including Denver, Aurora and Boulder.

“It will be shipped overnight on ice to keep it cold and keep any viruses happy,”Wilucz said. “We’re going to filter the sewage in order to get rid of all the big lumps in it and then it’s going to be concentrated.”

Once the concentrated samples are ready for testing, the lab will use a piece of equipment called a droplet digital PCR machine. The machine allows scientists to measure the amount of COVID-19 present in the sample.

“What we hope for in a healthy city where there are low levels of virus, we’ll only detect a few copies of the virus,” Wilucz said.

Samples with significantly more presence of the virus may indicate a higher number of people infected within that waste water district.

“We may be able to pick up hotspots and outbreaks before they are allowed to spread,” she said. “We’ll be able to see the virus actually before there are increases in the number of people reporting to hospital with symptoms.”

The test will not, however, be able to detect how many people are infected with COVID-19 in a certain area. Instead, it will show relative levels over time.

The extra warning time may prove critical in helping areas stop an outbreak from getting worse.

“We’re optimistic that this approach will allow us to monitor populations without it being hugely expensive,” Wilucz said.

Testing sewage is not new. According to Wilucz, in the United States it is primarily used to track drug usage.Outside of the U.S. it has been done to detect outbreaks of polio.

Trump attended a fundraiser without a mask. The city sent an investigator to inspect his hotel.

The president’s maskless appearance at the Trump International Hotel this week — in apparent defiance of D.C. coronavirus regulations — caught the attention of local authorities, who inspected the hotel on Wednesday to check for compliance with city rules. The investigator found no violations at the time of the visit, but the agency pledged to continue monitoring the hotel. D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) this spring ordered people to cover their faces while in the lobbies and common areas of hotels and to maintain six feet of distance from others, in an effort to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus.

But President Trump did not wear a mask while greeting GOP congressional candidate Madison Cawthorn on Monday at his downtown Washington hotel, according to video of their interaction. Nor did multiple guests standing near one another in the lobby, the video shows. ABC News reported Tuesday that guests at Trump properties have repeatedly flouted face-covering mandates. A Facebook invitation for a birthday party scheduled for Saturday at the D.C. hotel featured a “NO MASKS ALLOWED” disclaimer, the network reported. The invitation did not appear to be visible on the social media site Wednesday.

An inspector from the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration, which fines businesses with liquor licenses that don’t comply with city regulations, visited the hotel on Wednesday afternoon. Inspectors can issue fines or warnings only for violations that they see in person, and all hotel staff members and visitors during the inspection were wearing masks, ABRA said. Representatives of the hotel and the Trump Organization did not return requests for comment.

A spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee said organizers took precautionary steps before a GOP fundraiser at the hotel on Monday that the president attended, including requiring those present to pass coronavirus tests that day and undergo temperature screenings and wellness questionnaires. The campaign of Cawthorn, the North Carolina congressional candidate who shared the clip of the president’s maskless appearance at the hotel, did not return requests for comment. Despite overwhelming support from public health experts, masks have become a political litmus tests of sorts, with many Republicans eschewing them. As virus cases have spiked in the South and the West, however, a growing number of Republican elected officials have taken to wearing face coverings and calling them necessary.

Trump has recently softened his long-standing resistance and hostility to the use of masks to reduce coronavirus transmission. On Monday, he tweeted a photo of himself wearing a mask and called it patriotic — hours before he showed up at his hotel without one. He urged Americans to wear masks the next day, at his first daily virus briefing in months. Bowser has worn a mask in public and urged Washingtonians to cover their faces for the past several months. She expanded her mask mandate Wednesday to include any time outdoors when people are likely to come into contact with others.

Penalties for violating social distancing rules remain rare in the capital, however, with four establishments fined in the past month. The Trump International Hotel has posted dozens of images on social media with employees wearing masks in recent weeks. The hotel also attempted to open its outside sidewalk cafe, as other restaurants and hotels have done during the pandemic, but closed it again after guests were being bothered by passersby on the street. The hotel’s compliance with the city’s mask regulations came under scrutiny after Cawthorn shared the video of him meeting Trump on social media. The clip showed Trump, accompanied by his attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani, Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), greeting an enthusiastic Cawthorn. Among that group, only Giuliani wore a mask. Other people visible in the video did cover their faces. Greg Aselbekian, who was listed on the Facebook invitation as the host of the “NO MASKS ALLOWED” birthday party Saturday at the hotel, did not return requests for comment made through his social media channels.

A slender white man, helmeted and in black clothing, lit a torch and tried to ignite splintered shards of protective plywood tacked onto the front of the U.S. District Courthouse building.

“There is no such thing as a peaceful protest,” chanted one man standing nearby.

“No justice, no peace,” cried another.

From out of the crowd, a Black man stepped forward with a contrarian voice.

“When you are setting a fire, you mess with the (expletive) message,” he yelled. “How are you defending us when you are setting a (expletive) fire?”

His remarks, made around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, touched off a stormy conversation in front of this federal building, that in July has become a target of unruly protests challenging federal policing policies under President Donald Trump, whose portrait was stamped on toilet paper wrapped around a pillar.

The protester’s question also resonates more broadly.

Plenty of Americans are angry over Trump’s policies that have included deploying federal Customs and Border Protection agents on tasks of domestic law enforcement, but many also are unsettled by the images of protesters emerging from the angry streets of downtown Portland.

In Oregon’s largest city, other questions are asked with increasing urgency as tension escalates, including: How will this all end?

The protests began more than 50 days ago in response to the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police but now involves a faceoff with the Trump administration, whose Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, Chad Wolf, has declared federal law enforcement will continue to be on the streets in Portland to protect the courthouse.

But the protester who challenged the 1:30 a.m. Wednesday arson fire would not yield his opposition. He got into a lengthy discussion with another man who tried to calm him down. He stayed firm.

Eventually, the circle around the two men dispersed.

But no one, at least on that morning, picked up a torch to resume the attempt to set the courthouse plywood on fire.

Sierra Club director cancels founder John Muir — should parks, schools, be renamed?

The Sierra Club has called founder John Muir America’s most influential naturalist. His work inspired the preservation of such wonders as Yosemite and the Grand Canyon.

But in a stunning turn this week, the 128-year-old club’s current executive director, Michael Brune, said “it’s time to take down some of our own monuments” and called out Muir for having made “derogatory comments about Black people and Indigenous peoples that drew on deeply harmful racist stereotypes.”

Such remarks, Brune wrote, and Muir’s association with white supremacists who were early members and leaders of what would become the country’s largest environmental organization, “continue to hurt and alienate Indigenous people and people of color who come into contact with the Sierra Club.”

The club’s reassessment of its founder — coming at a time when the country is reevaluating how it honors a host of historical figures with racist pasts, from Confederate generals to former presidents — swiftly called into question the widespread honors to the man known as the father of our national parks.

A linked article notes Muir (1838-1914) “has at least one high school, 21 elementary schools, six middle schools and one college named after him, as well as a glacier, a mountain, a woods, a cabin, an inlet, a highway, a library, a motel, a medical center, a tea room and a minor planet.”

In the Bay Area, they include Muir Woods National Monument in Marin County, the John Muir National Historic Site near Martinez and John Muir Health system in Walnut Creek. There are John Muir elementary schools in San Francisco, Berkeley, Martinez and San Jose, where a middle school also is named after him, as is one in San Leandro.

Already, it’s sparked a torrid debate on over renaming. John Muir Health said Wednesday its name originated as part of an elementary school naming contest when the Walnut Creek Medical Center was being built in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and that its board will “examine the history and legacy of the John Muir name” and consider “recommendations on this complex topic.”

“The views of John Muir in no way reflect the mission and values of John Muir Health,” the company said in a statement. “We stand for equity, diversity, inclusion, dignity and mutual respect.”

Joshua Frank, an editor at political magazine and website CounterPunch, tweeted “we must rename the John Muir Wilderness,” the 100 miles in the Inyo National Forest from Mammoth Lakes to Mount Whitney.

But others rejected the idea as “cancel culture” run amok, arguing Muir’s contributions outweigh his racial views that were hardly unusual in his day, and which the Sierra Club’s Brune noted “evolved later in his life.”

“Canceling Muir would be a travesty to everything the environmental movement stands for,” tweeted Mark Topaz, a graphic designer and businessman.

According to an Atlas Obscura article Brune linked to his post, Muir described Cherokee homes he encountered as “wigwams of savages,” and indigenous people in California as “superstitious,” “lazy” and “dirty.” He made similar remarks about Blacks during a trip through the South in the late 1860s, referring to them as “Sambos” who didn’t work hard.

The Atlas Obscura article notes however that those “hateful words” were “not the sum total of Muir’s perspective,” adding that in his trip through the South, he “bemoans the bigoted mindset he encounters amongst whites.”

Chantal DeGuzman of Concord, who visited the Muir National Historic Site with her daughter Amanda DeGuzman and her granddaughter Jade Guzman, 4, was still trying to process it all Wednesday.

“We heard it on the news this morning, but I didn’t know this about John Muir,” DeGuzman said. “So I’m learning.”

Loretta J. Ross, associate professor of women and gender at Smith College, likened it to the recent decision of Planned Parenthood of Greater New York removing the name of founder Margaret Sanger over her “harmful connections to the eugenics movement.”

“I believe every generation has the human right to make the decisions in the struggle for freedom that are right for them, so I don’t disagree with removing Muir’s statue no more than I disagree with removing Sanger’s name from that Planned Parenthood building in New York City,” Ross said. “These are decisions that are made by the people on the front lines of activism who I refuse to second guess.”

But she added, “I also don’t believe in repudiating people who had large impacts on the struggle for freedom and justice just because they were imperfect people. Judging people in the distant past by modern standards lifts them out of the context of their times and sometimes lacks nuance and reinforces the ‘cancel culture,’ which I oppose.”
