As for Pete Townshend, I think he may have seen some shit in his younger years, but got sober and got away from all that. I do happen to believe him, because of an encounter I had with him several years ago. He was doing a book signing, and being a musician and a fan, I decided to go. My sons, who were 13 and 15, also musicians, and grew up listening to his music, also wanted to go. When we got up to meet him he was very nice and cordial. I thanked him for all the years of good music and said, "I'd like to introduce you to the next generation of rock and roll," to which he instantly looked up from signing the book, directly at the boys and said "DON'T DO IT!!" We were all a little surprised at his reaction…I think himself included…and then, I think realizing he didn't want to scare the kids away from their love of music or appear to be a dick, he kind of laughed it off, but looked me very directly in the eye to let me know he meant it. It was quite an eye opener and a lesson about the pitfalls of fame and fortune and not falling into the trap that I still remind my kids of from time to time. I am grateful that he gave them that lesson, because it impacted them in a way that I as a parent could not (you know, parents don't know anything… :)
