The U.S. is deploying additional troops to Afghanistan to assist the evacuation of some officials from the U.S. embassy in Kabul as the country rapidly deteriorates under Taliban aggression, The Associated Press reported Thursday.

The Taliban have so far conquered 11 of the country’s provincial capitals, five of them fell since Wednesday. The Taliban now controls two-thirds of the country, displaying the ability to take over the country far more quickly than the U.S. anticipated. The deployment of U.S. troops will provide ground and air support for U.S. embassy personnel who are evacuating the country through the Kabul airport, AP reported. A source with direct knowledge of the situation told the Daily Caller that at least 3,000 U.S. troops will be deploying to the Kabul airport. Chief Pentagon spokesman John Kirby confirmed the troop movement later Thursday. While Afghan government forces have fallen far more quickly than U.S. military officials predicted, the Biden administration argues that is more due to a lack of effort on the part of those forces to resist the Taliban. “No potential outcome has to be inevitable, including the fall of Kabul,” Kirby told reporters Thursday. “It doesn’t have to be that way. It really depends on what kind of political and military leadership the Afghans can muster to turn this around.”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki sent a similar message Wednesday. “Ultimately, the Afghan National Security Defense Forces have the equipment, numbers, and training to fight back,” Psaki said at a White House press briefing. “They have what they need. What they need to determine is if they have the political will to fight back, and if they have the ability to unite … as leaders to fight back. And that’s really where it stands at this point.” The U.S. embassy in Kabul issued a security alert urging any American citizens in Afghanistan to leave immediately. The U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad met with Taliban members in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday and pleaded that they halt their campaign in Afghanistan and pursue a peace agreement.

State Senate Democrat Carol Alvarado talked through the night in an attempt to filibuster the bill.

The Texas Senate on Thursday morning passed the elections bill that state Democrats have attempted several times to prevent from becoming law.

Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Carol Alvarado filibustered the bill for 15-hours in the latest long shot attempt to prevent its passage, but the chamber endured and passed the legislation by a vote of 18-11 this morning. Filibuster rules required Alvarado to remain standing, addressing the chamber on exclusively the subject of the bill, without bathroom breaks or food.

The attempt came one day after Dade Phelan, the Republican Speaker of the Texas House authorized arrest warrants for the 52 Democrats who have failed to show up for the second special session this summer of the Texas legislature, thereby denying the chamber a quorum.

The bill, which state Senator Bryan Hughes (R) says contains "simple, common sense reforms," like preventing 24-hour drive through voting, has met ample opposition from the Democratic party, who say it is a restrictive bill meant to suppress and intimidate marginalized voters.

Half of Lumber Dealers Now Sit on Excess Inventory in the U.S.

Almost half of U.S. lumber dealers and manufacturers reported excess inventories last month, a sharp turn around from a few months ago, when supplies ran so low they sparked price surges.

In July, 49% of building-material dealers and manufacturers said they had excess lumber capacity, while none described their levels as “very tight,” in a survey by John Burns Real Estate Consulting LLC. Back in April, 40% said their wood inventories were “very tight.” Lumber prices have come down from records in May, when sawmills were caught off guard with low inventories amid a surge in home building and renovation. Producers have since increased output, and a shortage of other building supplies such as siding and windows has slowed the pace of construction. In the John Burns Real Estate Consulting survey, about 34% of the respondents said they had slightly low or very tight inventories in July.

Lumber futures are now 70% below their peak and trading at about $500 per thousand board feet.

Arizona State Senator Wendy Rogers has announced the formation of the new “Election Integrity Caucus,” consisting of legislators from all states of the Union.

“I am one of the founding members of the newly formed Election Integrity Caucus that consists of legislators from all 50 states,” Rogers tweeted on Thursday, saying that it reminds her of the Continental Congress, the legislative body during the time of the American Revolution which drafted the Declaration of Independence. “We will meet regularly and we will talk regularly to implement the securing our elections,” Rogers added.

Rogers later shared a photo of some, but not all, of the members of the Election Integrity Caucus together. Along with Rogers, the photo also included fellow Arizona legislator, State Representative Mark Finchem, currently running to replace Democrat Katie Hobbs as Secretary of State, and Virginia State Senator Amanda Chase, another strong proponent of election integrity.

Oil spills from freighter that ran aground at northeast Japan port

A cargo ship that ran aground at a port in northeastern Japan before being refloated and anchored off the coast was found Thursday to have broken apart and was spilling oil, the coast guard said.

The freighter, the Panamanian-flagged 39,910-ton Crimson Polaris, ran aground Wednesday morning at Hachinohe port in Aomori Prefecture. All 21 crew members eight Chinese and 13 Filipino nationals had been rescued without notable injuries, the coast guard said. Leaked oil was confirmed floating in an area of about 24 kilometers in length and up to about 800 meters in width as of 5 p.m. Thursday, reaching the coastline of Misawa in the prefecture. The coast guard said its officials have been engaging in cleanup work. About 1,600 tons of heavy oil still remained inside the cargo ship. The vessel was on course to enter the port on Wednesday morning but ran aground in shallow water as it was carried away by strong winds, according to Nippon Yusen K.K., which is responsible for the operation of the ship. The crew initially managed to refloat the ship, which was carrying wooden chips from Thailand, but it soon became impossible to navigate leading them to drop anchor around 4 km off the coast.

On Thursday morning, the stern section of the ship had broken apart and the ship was leaking oil, the coast guard said.

As National File previously reported last week, Democrat President Joe Biden got into a heated exchange with a CNN reporter when questioned over his effusive praise for Cuomo:

“Can I quickly follow up on your comment on Governor Cuomo?” Collins demanded during a presser on Tuesday. “Can you really say he has done ‘a hell of a job’ if he’s accused of sexually harassing women on the job?”

“Look, you’re asking two different questions,” Biden shot back. “Now, I asked the substantive – should he remain as governor is one question. And women should be believed when they make accusations that are on the face of them if they make sense, and investigate them, and if they’re investigated and the judgement was made that what they said was correct. That’s one thing. The question is, did he do a good job on infrastructure? That was the question. He did.”

“The question was how he did as a governor,” Collins snapped. “He was accused of sexually harassing.” She then asked Biden to if he could separate Cuomo’s policies from his personal conduct, to which Biden replied, “No, I’m not, I’m trying to answer a specific question. I was asked a specific question. What do you want to ask me specifically?”

Bill Gates Pledges $1.5 Billion To Develop New Green Technologies As Image-Rehab Tour Continues

Bill Gates' campaign to rehabilitate his public image in the wake of his divorce from ex-wife Melinda French formally began earlier this month when Gates sat for a softball interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper. It continued Thursday with another interview (this time with the conservative-leaning WSJ) where the Microsoft founder pledged to invest $1.5 billion in a series of public-private partnerships set up to develop new green technologies, like devices that suck carbon out of the atmosphere, or emissions-free jet fuel.

The statement was clearly timed to coincide with the Senate's passage of the "compromise" infrastructure bill, which, if passed by the House, would dedicate $25 billion to the Department of Energy for the development of new technologies and prototypes to help fight climate change, part of $100 billion in climate change-fighting funds tucked into the bill. Gates explained to WSJ that the money would be provided over a period of three years by a fund Gates has named "Breakthrough Energy".

These "Breakthrough" projects will focus on finding market-based solutions to climate change. To be sure, Gates' grants will need to compete for the matching DoE funds with other private sources (but considering Gates's vast connections in Washington, we will be shocked if the matching funds aren't approved) He also seized the opportunity to praise the Dems for their dedication to fighting climate change, while also spouting boilerplate language about being "dedicated" to the cause.

Breakthrough will likely shift funding for the biggest projects to Europe and Asia instead if the package doesn’t become law, he added. "Critical for all these climate technologies is to get the costs down and to be able to scale them up to a pretty gigantic level," Mr. Gates said. "You’ll never get that scale up unless the government’s coming in with the right policies, and the right policy is exactly what’s in that infrastructure bill."

Gates also insisted that these "demonstration projects" are critical to making new technologies work.

The interview featured a subtle threat: if Congress doesn't approve the infrastructure package (with the climate funding attached), Gates will take his "Breakthrough" funding elsewhere, likely to Europe and Asia.

While Gates is doing everything he can to promote the public-private partnership plan included in the Infrastructure Bill, this approach to clean-energy technology has backfired before. The best-known example is probably the collapse of Solyndra, a solar panel maker that received $500MM+ in public funds from the Obama Administration via the post-crisis recovery bill passed in 2009. The company declared bankruptcy in 2011, laying off hundreds of workers, and leaving the Democrats' with an embarrassing black eye**.

Supreme Court Blocks Part of New York's Eviction Moratorium

The U.S. Supreme Court stepped in on Thursday to temporarily block part of New York's eviction moratorium,

Adam Liptak reported for The New York Times.

The decision was unsigned but broke along ideological lines, in a 6-3 decision.

Justice Stephen Breyer wrote the dissent and was joined by fellow liberal Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor.

Thursday's decision, as emphasized by Liptak's report,

applies only to a specific portion of the state law, which was enacted last December:

The court’s order was unsigned and stressed that it applied only to a part of a state law that bars the eviction of tenants

who file a form saying they have suffered economic setbacks as result of the pandemic.

“This scheme violates the court’s longstanding teaching that ordinarily ‘no man can be a judge in his own case’

consistent with the Due Process Clause,” the majority wrote.

The order left other parts of the law intact, including a provision that instructed housing judges not to evict tenants

who have been found to have suffered financial hardship.

Further court proceedings are likely to only continue from here. As Liptak himself acknowledged:

Other challenges to eviction moratoriums, including one recently imposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,

may reach the court soon. That federal moratorium is on precarious legal ground in light of a ruling from the justices in June.

Last Wednesday, in an "analysis" piece for CNN, Stephen Collinson highlighted the concerns of a "humanitarian crisis"

that would arise if President Joe Biden didn't not take unconstitutional action to extend the CDC's eviction moratorium.

Collinson also claimed "crushing humanitarian and political pressure left him no choice but to take a chance on an emergency move."

CNN had to issue an update for an August 3 article to do with a Las Vegas woman, Dasha Kelly,

who is benefitting from GoFundMe donations when it comes to facing potential eviction.

She was described as the mother of three children when in actuality she is the nanny.

Kelly was referenced in Collinson's article as well.

If one feels the need to look past the constitutionality of Biden's move to address "humanitarian" concerns, those exist for landlords, too.

As Liptak included in his reporting:

The case was brought by several small landlords who said they had endured severe hardship and even homelessness

because of the part of the law allowing eviction proceedings to be suspended by the filing of a form.

The law does not relieve tenants of their obligation to pay rent or block lawsuits for unpaid rents.

President Biden himself has acknowledged that he is buying time to "keep this going." Townhall spoke with Curt Levey,

a constitutional law attorney and the president of the Committee for Justice, who has weighed in on the overall constitutional question.

"In fact, Biden admitted that he was acting to buy “some additional time” before the courts could strike down his obviously unlawful directive. Unfortunately for Biden, the Constitution makes no exceptions for buying time, dangerous viruses, or sympathetic situations like renters facing eviction. Never mind Biden's lack of sympathy for all the small landlords whose struggles to avoid bankruptcy are imperiled by Biden’s extension," he shared.

Republican members of Congress have pointed out that this constitutes an impeachable offense.

"If the still Democrat-controlled House were interested in being legally or logically consistent,

it would certainly consider whether to impeach Biden for his defiance of the Supreme Court. But of course,

I’m not holding my breath for that to happen," Levey also shared. "But of course, I'm not holding my breath for that to happen."

Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic set to list on the London Stock Exchange

Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic is planning to list on the London Stock Exchange. This is coming just five months after landing a fresh £160m capital injection.

The airline has received positive responses from institutional investors about an initial public offering, according to Sky News. The move would almost certainly see Sir Richard relinquish overall control of the business. According to reports, Virgin Atlantic has hired Citi and Barclays to oversee the listing. Virgin Atlantic is majority-owned by Sir Richard’s Virgin Group, which holds a 51% stake. U.S Delta Air Lines owns the remaining 49%. Selling shares to the public would inevitably mean Virgin’s stake being diluted unless Sir Richard elected to subscribe for new equity in the IPO. Like most airlines, the company was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, largely because of its dependence on lucrative UK-US flights. In April 2020, the company reported a 659 million pound ($914 million) pretax loss for 2020 after passenger numbers dropped 80%. Virgin Atlantic has also reduced its workforce since pandemic started – a move that has helped to drive significant longer-term cost savings. Going public would bring the company into line with many of its publicly traded peers, such as British Airways’ parent International Airlines Group, easyJet, Ryanair, American Airlines and Cathay Pacific.
