Inflation isn’t just climbing here on Earth. Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc. is resuming ticket sales for trips to space at a new price of US$450,000 a ride.

Sales are restarting immediately and available tickets range from individual seats to a “full-flight buyout,” Chief Executive Officer Michael Colglazier said in a statement Thursday as the company reported financial results. Virgin Galactic had charged US$250,000 for each ticket, before halting sales while it continued work on its spacecraft. The Las Cruces, New Mexico-based company is looking to build a space-tourism business after a successful test flight last month with founder Richard Branson and five Virgin Galactic employees aboard. Lake Oroville reaches all-time low level; hydroelectric plant shuts down for first time ever

Four years ago, Oroville Dam, the tallest dam in the United States, made international news when its massive 10-mile-long reservoir filled to the top in heavy winter storms, and raging waters destroyed its spillway, causing the emergency evacuation of 188,000 people downstream.

But now, in the latest symbol of California’s worsening drought, the opposite problem is underway: Lake Oroville’s water level has fallen so low that on Thursday, for the first time since the dam was built in 1967, its power plant was shut down because there is no longer enough water to spin the turbines and generate electricity. “This is just one of many unprecedented impacts we are experiencing in California as a result of our climate-induced drought,” said Karla Nemeth, director of the state Department of Water Resources, which owns the dam.

On Thursday, the reservoir was only 24% full, having fallen below an all-time low record set in September, 1977. The lake level has dropped a stunning 250 feet in the past two years. The water level has fallen below the intake pipes that normally send water to spin six huge turbines at the Edward Hyatt Power Plant in the bedrock under the dam. The loss of Oroville’s electricity won’t by itself cause blackouts. Even when the lake is full, the Hyatt power plant, one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the state, provides about 1% of California’s peak statewide electricity demand. But the problem illustrates a wider challenge facing California this year from the drought. Reservoirs are low all over.

And hydroelectricity is the state’s second-largest source of power, providing about 15% of California’s electricity each year. During the first four months this year, hydroelectric production in California fell 37% compared to the same time last year and 71% compared to 2019, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. That power has to be made up to reduce the risk of blackouts. “This is a huge problem. It’s part of the big challenge we are facing this summer,” said Severin Borenstein, co-director of the Energy Institute at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. The lost electricity can be replaced largely by increasing natural gas power plant production and importing electricity from other states, said Borenstein, who also serves on the board of the California Independent System Operator, which runs the state’s power grid. But as California increasingly moves to renewable energy to reduce climate change and air pollution — with 33% of its electricity now coming from wind, solar and other renewable sources and a state law requiring 60% by 2030 — hydropower is more valuable than ever, he said. That’s because as the sun goes down in the evening during hot summer months, solar energy drops. But people in the Central Valley, Southern California and other areas where temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees continue to run their air conditioners to keep cool. Sometimes demand can come dangerously close to exceeding the available supply.

If there are heat waves across the West, other states don’t have much extra electricity to sell to California. Last year, during a record heatwave that exceeded 115 degrees in some places, the state experienced two blackouts, the first in 20 years.

Social media users have theorized that President Andres Manuel López Obrador could face severe repercussions after he refused to purchase Covid vaccines for children, vowing that Mexico wouldn’t bow to pressure from drugs firms.

In remarks made earlier this week, the Mexican leader said his government was still waiting for the scientific community to demonstrate the benefits of vaccinating minors. Until conclusive evidence was provided, Mexico would refuse to purchase jabs for children, Obrador announced, adding that pharmaceutical firms seemed to be focused more on making profits than on ensuring medical necessity as they rake in record sales from Covid-19 vaccines.

Mexico will not be held hostage by pharmaceutical companies that only want to do business and scare children with the idea that it is necessary to vaccinate against Covid-19.

He was similarly critical of plans by drugs companies to introduce third- or even fourth-dose booster shots, opining that the jabs could be “superfluous.”

Hiroshima marks 76th A-bomb anniv., urges end to nuclear deterrence

Hiroshima marked the 76th anniversary of its atomic bombing by the United States on Friday, with its mayor urging world leaders to shift away from nuclear deterrence to trust-building dialogue.

In the annual ceremony, which was scaled down once again this year amid surging coronavirus infections across Japan, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui called on world leaders to support a U.N. treaty to ban nuclear weapons that came into effect this January.

After a moment of silence was observed at 8:15 a.m., the exact time of the bombing on Aug. 6, 1945, the mayor also highlighted the significance of combining individual efforts, particularly among youth, to encourage nuclear-armed states to change their policies. "The road to abolition will not be smooth, but a ray of hope shines from the young people now taking up the hibakusha's quest," he said, referring to survivors of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, whose numbers have been decreasing rapidly due to their old age.

Matsui stressed that his western Japanese city would never stop preserving the facts of the catastrophe and promoting a worldwide culture of peace. "Nuclear weapons are the ultimate human violence. If civil society decides to live without them, the door to a nuclear-weapon-free world will open wide," he said.

In his speech, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga stressed the need to "persevere with realistic initiatives" toward nuclear disarmament amid the severe security environment and widening differences between nations' positions. At the ongoing Tokyo Olympics, athletes and officials have not been asked to observe a moment of silence despite requests from the Hiroshima city government and other groups for them to participate "in spirit." The requests were made after International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach visited Hiroshima on July 16, a week before the opening of the Olympics, and called for global solidarity in building a more peaceful future. As for the U.N. treaty to ban nuclear weapons, which currently has 86 signatory states, Matsui called for the Japanese government to sign and ratify it in order to carry out "productive mediation" between nuclear and non-nuclear-weapon states.

Double-Blind Ivermectin Study Reveals COVID Patients Recover More Quickly, Are Less Infectious

A double-blind Israeli study has concluded that Ivermectin, an inexpensive anti-parasitic widely used since 1981, reduces both the duration and infectiousness of Covid-19, according to the Jerusalem Post.

The study, conducted by Prof. Eli Schwartz, founder of the Center for Travel Medicine and Tropical Disease at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, looked at some 89 eligible volunteers over the age of 18 who had tested positive for coronavirus, and were living in state-run Covid-19 hotels. After being divided into two groups, 50% received ivermectin, and 50% received a placebo. Each patient was given the drug for three days in a row, an hour before eating.

83% of participants were symptomatic at recruitment. 13.5% of patients had comorbidities of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, hypertension or cancer. The median age of the patients was 35, ranging from 20 to 71-years-old.

Treatment was discontinued on the third day, and patients were monitored every two days thereafter. By day six, 72% of those treated with ivermectin tested negative for the virus, vs. 50% of those who received the placebo. Meanwhile, just 13% of ivermectin patients were able to infect others after six days compared to 50% of the placebo group – nearly four times as many.....

The Pentagon must stop forcing servicemen and women to take the anthrax vaccination against their will, unless President Bush signs a special order, a judge ruled Monday.

Millions of shots have been given and hundreds of service members have been punished for refusing them since the mandatory vaccinations started in 1998.

The judge ruled that the anthrax vaccinations fell under a 1998 law prohibiting the use of certain experimental drugs unless people being given the drug consent or the president waives the consent requirement.

Congress passed the law following fears that the use of such drugs may have led to unexplained illnesses among veterans of the 1991 Persian Gulf War that have come to be known as Gulf War Syndrome.

"The women and men of our armed forces put their lives on the line every day to preserve and safeguard the freedoms that all Americans cherish and enjoy," said Judge Emmet G. Sullivan of the United States District Court in Washington.

The injunction is the result of a class action law suit brought by military personnel and civilians working for the Pentagon, reported CBS News Correspondent Howard Arenstein.

In his ruling, Sullivan pointed to the apparent risk in receiving the anthrax vaccination, noting that the rate of adverse reaction was recently revised upward from 0.2 percent to between 5 percent and 35 percent. Six deaths are attributed to the vaccine, Sullivan said.

The Pentagon had no immediate comment. A Pentagon Web site promoting the vaccine claims that data going back 20 years demonstrates the vaccine is safe, and that there is no evidence the vaccine is connected with illness suffered by Gulf War veterans.

Sullivan rejected the government concern that military discipline would be harmed if courts intervene between soldiers and their military superiors.

Believing Iraq and other nations had produced anthrax weapons, former Secretary of Defense William Cohen in 1997 ordered the armed forces immunized.

Shots started in 1998 for soldiers in areas believed to present the highest risk of infection — the Persian Gulf, then Korea.

Anthrax is caused by bacteria spores spread either by animals or weapons. The most serious form affects the lungs, with fatality rates near 50 percent. Death is somewhat less likely in cases where anthrax infects the digestive tract, and is rare when the skin is infected.

saying the network isn’t “what it used to be” since Paul Ryan joined its corporate board.

“I appreciate the platform Fox News gave me for years,” Gaetz said in the first episode of his new podcast, Firebrand.

“It allowed me to get key information to the country.

I have many friends still at Fox News and I enjoy our discussions, whether they’re on-air or off-air.”

However, he said, “Fox News isn’t what it used to be. It probably has something to do with their corporate board member, Paul Ryan.”

Gaetz was a staple on Fox News programming,

though after it was reported he is under federal investigation for sex trafficking

(a development he memorably responded to on Tucker Carlson Tonight) his appearances have waned.

On his new podcast, Gaetz went on to say that one of his “favorite shows on the platform was Lou Dobbs Tonight.”

Lou Dobbs, 75, was at Fox Business Network from 2011 until his show was cancelled in February 2021

amid a lawsuit accusing the host and others at Fox News of lying about the 2020 election.

Gaetz called Dobbs “sometimes politically incorrect” but “usually right about stuff” before playing a

supercut of Dobbs regularly slamming Ryan when he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Ryan was speaker of the House from 2015 to 2019, before joining Fox’s corporate board two months after his departure.

The supercut included Dobbs calling Ryan “a fraud in every way,” asserting that he had made “no secret” about his “contempt” for Ryan,

and accusing him of having “betrayed” the Republican Party by supporting left-wing immigration policies.

“Now that Paul Ryan has concentrated power at Fox News, Lou Dobbs is no longer on air,” Gaetz said.

“He can’t guide the populist right away from the invade-everywhere, invite-everyone version of Republicanism

that sells out to K Street and abandons Main Street.”

“Paul Ryan never used his considerable power as speaker for Trump’s wall or other key immigration reforms,

but he was able to use his power at Fox News to cancel the great Lou Dobbs,” Gaetz added. “What a shame.”
