Seattle mayoral candidate nearly shot by thieves outside home, calls out city’s police ‘manpower’ problem

Seattle mayoral candidate Lance Randall on Thursday raised concern over the lack of support for police officers in the city after almost getting shot while in his bedroom.

Komo News reported on Monday that the Seattle mayoral candidate had a run-in with armed catalytic converter thieves outside of his home.

“We do have a manpower problem. We’ve lost a lot of police officers and it is having a profound effect on public safety delivering system,” Randall told “Fox & Friends.”

Looking through his window, he saw two men underneath a Toyota Prius that was parked across the street. He saw the pair trying to steal a catalytic converter out of the Prius. The devices have valuable metals inside of them that are worth $1,000.

Randall said he told his wife to call 911 as he headed outside to try to look at the suspect’s license plate.

“They saw me, picked up their things and got in their car, backing it up into a truck,” he said. “When they turned the headlights out, I saw gunfire (fired) twice out of the sunroof.”

Randall said Seattle needs to have a “strong public safety service delivery system,” which includes the police department, fire department, paramedic and human services providers....

Doug Emhoff has spent the first six months of the Biden administration carving out his role as the first second gentleman of the United States, traversing across the country to promote coronavirus vaccines and extend support to small businesses.

Emhoff has headlined regular events but still kept a low profile in the media, striking a balance between breaking barriers as the first male second spouse while also fulfilling the role in a way second ladies have done traditionally. Observers say the lack of media attention is a sign of success.

“He hasn’t made any mistakes that made him an issue, which in some ways is the one thing you want to avoid,” said Julian Zelizer, a political history professor at Princeton University. “Part of the trick is doing it and not overstepping in ways that make you the focus.”

Emhoff, a lawyer, has been a trustworthy asset for the administration, say other observers.

“Even though he is a wealthy entertainment lawyer, he’s playing that down and his persona now as second spouse is, 'I’m more of a regular guy who goes out and supports his wife’s career and teaches at a nearby law school.' This makes him a more relatable spouse than if he was playing up his Hollywood connections at this time,” said Katherine Jellison, professor of U.S. women’s and gender history at Ohio University.

Emhoff has been deployed across the country for the administration’s vaccination tour, including a trip with first lady Jill Biden to Houston this week, where they attended an Astros game with military members and front-line workers.

On Friday, Emhoff traveled solo to Bryce Canyon, Utah, as part of the Biden administration’s effort to highlight the progress against the coronavirus ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

He visited a barber shop in Chicago last week with Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) and earlier this month visited a high school in Birmingham, Ala., with Veterans Affairs Secretary Dennis McDonough. His other visits in June included Memphis, Tenn., and Tallahassee, Fla.

“I think it’s unleashing the power of that position,” said Katherine Sibley, director of the American studies program at St. Joseph’s University. “What a waste if he did sort of hang back like previous spouses had. I think he’s using his personality; that will be very helpful for his wife and, I think, for the administration.”

President Biden on Friday looked for Emhoff in the crowd when he welcomed the Los Angeles Dodgers to the White House. Emhoff, a California native and lifelong Dodgers fan, visited the team’s clubhouse before a game on Friday.

Search efforts stepping up in Atami mudslides

Rescuers continue their search for survivors of last weekend's deadly mudslides in central Japan, as the critical 72-hour deadline to find survivors approaches.

A torrent of mud ripped through the city of Atami in Shizuoka Prefecture on Saturday, washing away at least 130 homes and buildings. So far, four people have been confirmed dead. Search and rescue crews are stepping up their efforts, as the crucial 72-hour period ends around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. It is still unclear how many people were trapped in the mudslides.

Authorities released a list of 64 people still unaccounted for. The authorities believe these people are residents of the devastated area, based on records. Officials said former residents of the area may be still on that list. The officials are calling on people to provide any information they may have about the people on the list. Police said they are still receiving reports of persons unaccounted for. Officials are preparing to disclose their names after gaining consent from those who sent in the reports.

A Remote Access Trojan, more popularly known as RAT, is a type of malware that can conduct covert surveillance to a victim’s computer. Its behavior is very similar to keyloggers. However, RATs can do much more than collect data from keystrokes, usernames, and passwords. Other modern keyloggers can also capture screenshots, emails, browser, chat logs, and more.

However, RATs can do much more than gather information. It can gain remote access to the victim’s computer through specially configured communication protocols that allow the malware to go unnoticed. The backdoor access provides virtually complete access to the machine such as change settings, monitor the user’s behavior, use the computer’s Internet connection, browse and copy files, and even access to other computers in the victim’s network.

Moreover, RATs can spy on victims by discreetly activating a computer’s webcam or microphone . It is especially dangerous when a computer is connected to various home gadgets such as home security systems, CCTV cameras, and more. It can escalate to a dangerous situation when the victim’s computer is used to conduct illegal activities, download illicit files, and conduct criminal transactions using your identity.

Other variants of RATs use the network and other machines connected to it and create a botnet. File hosting, torrenting, DDOS attacks, and Bitcoin mining can be done using your home network without your knowledge. RATs usually do not slow down the computer so it can go unnoticed for quite a while. Some may even stay in hiding for long time.

Mexico’s Biggest Private Oil Find Will Be Operated by State-Owned Pemex

Mexico’s energy ministry has designated Petroleos Mexicanos as the operator of the country’s largest oil discovery by private companies, in the latest sign of the government’s nationalist approach to the energy industry.

The Zama field, discovered in 2017 by a private consortium led by Talos Energy Inc., will be operated by the state-own producer, according to a person familiar with the situation who asked not to be named because the decision wasn’t made public yet. The resolution ends a long-standing conflict between Pemex, as the state company is known, and Houston-based Talos over the operation of the field, which contains as many as one billion barrels of oil equivalent. Spokespeople from Mexico’s energy ministry and Pemex did not immediately respond to comment requests. Timothy Duncan, chief executive officer of Talos, did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment.

Newspaper Reforma reported earlier that Talos and Pemex were informed by Mexican authorities in a letter that the state company had the technical capacity and conditions to be operator of the reservoir. The field, shared by both companies, is located in Mexico’s Campeche Bay.

Asset owners managing $6 trln call for global carbon price

Investors managing more than $6 trillion in assets on Tuesday called for a co-ordinated global price on carbon and said emissions costs would need to almost treble by 2030 to reach the world’s climate goals.

The call by the The Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance, whose 43 members include some of the world’s biggest pension schemes and insurers, comes ahead of the next round of global climate talks in November.

Currently, some 64 carbon pricing instruments such as emissions trading schemes or taxes are in use globally, covering just 21% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a May report by the World Bank said. But even within these schemes prices can vary greatly. The piecemeal approach makes it hard for global investors and companies to manage risk and plan over the long term, particularly in the development and adoption of new technologies needed to accelerate the low-carbon transition. Given that, and to have any hope of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial norms, the goal of the Paris Agreement on climate, the group suggested a hybrid model between emissions trading schemes and taxes or levies.

Specifically, the group said it backed the creation of a minimum price on carbon, which would trend higher over time, to give certainty to investors and provide a guard-rail against price crashes and a maximum price to protect against price spikes. “A carbon price corridor that provides a clear economic signal as well as more pre-visibility will provide the global environment necessary for companies to make sound investments decisions,” said Charles Emond, President and CEO of Canadian pension scheme Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ). According to the OECD, a price of $147 a tonne is needed by 2030 if the world hopes to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, almost treble the current price in the EU’s Emissions Trading System of around $59 a tonne.

“Non-regressive and revenue-neutral carbon-pricing instruments – harmonised across borders – will not only unleash massive investment in renewable power systems globally, but boost sectors from construction to transport, which are in urgent need of transition,” said Günther Thallinger, Member of the Board of Management Allianz SE and Chair of the Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance.
