Judge Tosses Nurse’s Vaccine Requirement Lawsuit Against Houston Methodist Hospital

A federal judge tossed a lawsuit filed by a nurse against Houston Methodist hospital over its requirement that all employees be vaccinated against Covid.

117 employees filed a lawsuit against a Houston-area hospital over its Covid-19 vaccine mandate.Jennifer Bridges, a registered nurse at the hospital said that doctors are being forced from their practices and ultimately left with no choice but to abandon their patients.

The lawsuit argued the vaccine mandate violates the Nuremberg Code and US statutes that allow Americans to refuse “unapproved” treatments.

The employees sued The Methodist Hospital, the Methodist Hospital System and Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital.

David Bernard, the CEO of Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital told employees that they can find a job elsewhere if they refuse the experimental Covid vaccine.

“100% vaccination is more important than your individual freedom. Everyone [sic] of you is replaceable. If you don’t like what your [sic] doing you can leave and we will replace your spot,” Bernard told the employees.

U.S. District Judge Lynn Hughes of Houston, a Reagan appointee tossed out the lawsuit on Saturday and blasted Jennifer Bridges.

“All of my clients continue to be committed to fighting this unjust policy,” Woodfill said in a statement. “What is shocking is that many of my clients were on the front line treating COVID-positive patients at Texas Methodist Hospital during the height of the pandemic. As a result, many of them contracted COVID-19. As a thank you for their service and sacrifice, Methodist Hospital awards them a pink slip and sentences them to bankruptcy.”

More than 170 Houston Methodist Hospital employees have been suspended for two weeks without pay for refusing the Covid-19 vaccine.

Suu Kyi trial heads to witness examination phase

Prosecutors on Monday began examining witnesses in the trial of Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi at a special court set up in the capital Naypyitaw, while elsewhere in the country the military appears to be taking steps to outlaw Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy.

The military is believed to be considering a plan to disband the NLD based on the political party registration law. It could also potentially name it an illegal organization.

The military has said it plans to hold a general election after lifting the state of emergency. The military is believed to be preparing a favorable scenario for the pro-military Union Solidarity and Development Party.

Oil prices reach highest level in over 2 years as demand rebounds

Oil prices climbed to their highest level in more than two years Monday amid more evidence of increasing demand as the global economy reopens from COVID-19 lockdowns. NYC to Launch $100 Covid-19 Vaccine Referral Bonus Program

New York City will launch a $100 vaccine referral bonus program to boost the rate of vaccinations in the city, which have slowed in recent weeks, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Monday.

For every unvaccinated person an organization brings in to get the Covid-19 shot, the community group gets $100 per person, up to $20,000, de Blasio said. The program will start on Wednesday. “We want to incentivize these great community-based organizations to bring in folks who just haven’t gotten around to it now, maybe had some hesitancy,” de Blasio said. “The time is right to bring them in.” De Blasio is trying to reach a goal of 5 million vaccinated by the end of June, which he warned earlier this month that the city might not hit. Vaccinations are spread unevenly across boroughs and age groups: Nearly 60% of Manhattan is fully vaccinated, compared to 38% in the Bronx. While 73% of people age 65 to 74 are vaccinated across the city, only 41% of people age 18 to 24 are vaccinated.

De Blasio said the city’s senior centers re-opened on Monday and that the city would hold a parade to honor health-care and other essential workers on July 7.

Inflation expectations for the next year climbed for a seventh straight month in May to a record high, according to a new survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Inflation expectations for the next three years climbed from 3.1% to 3.6%, trailing only the August 2013 print. Respondents over 60 years of age and those earning a high school degree or less were most concerned about future inflation.

Inflation expectations over the short-term have in recent months been in increasing at a faster pace than for the medium-term. The 0.4 percentage point difference between the two is the biggest spread on record. The gap comes as the Fed has said it expects inflation pressures to be "transitory" due to a base effects skew that occurred when prices declined at the start of the pandemic.

Japan eyes quasi-state of emergency for Tokyo during Olympics

The central government is considering placing Tokyo under a quasi-state of emergency during the Olympics, after a number of health experts expressed concerns over a potential spike in COVID-19 cases, a government official said Monday.

The Olympics are due to begin on July 23, but public fears persist about a surge in coronavirus infections triggered by an influx of people into the capital and more contagious variants of the virus. Since late April, Tokyo has been under a stricter state of emergency, but it will likely end on June 20 as a fourth wave of infections has somewhat abated.

The government is now planning to switch to a quasi-emergency with smaller fines for noncompliance under which restaurants and bars will still be asked to shorten opening hours but may be allowed to serve alcohol. Under a quasi-state of emergency, governors are allowed to impose measures in specific areas rather than entire prefectures. A group of infectious disease experts, including Shigeru Omi, head of a government subcommittee on the virus, is expected to disclose this week the various health risks if the Olympics take place as scheduled.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will convene a task force meeting as early as Thursday to make a decision on whether to end the third state of emergency.
