Operation Ironside: AFP, FBI take down mafia, bikie members in ‘sting of the century’
Some of the world’s biggest crime organisations are in ruins today after an AFP-led sting brought down hundreds of alleged kingpins.
In what’s been dubbed the “sting of the century” hundreds of people have been arrested as part of a global operation to bring down terrorist groups, mafia organisations and outlaw motorcycle gangs.
“Today, the Australian Government, as part of a global operation, has struck a heavy blow against organised crime — not just in this country, but one that will echo around organised crime around the world,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said.
“This is a watershed moment in Australian law enforcement history … Everything we’ve been doing has been to keep Australians safe.”
Operation Ironside was formed three years ago as a collaboration between the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to bring down underworld figures.
Hundreds of alleged offenders were tricked into communicating via AN0M, an encrypted app designed by police.
More than 220 members of Australia’s underworld were arrested as part of the nation’s largest ever crime sting after they were allegedly caught using the app to plan executions, drug imports and launder money.
Hundreds more were nabbed by police in Europe and the US as authorities conducted sweeping raids across the globe.
The AFP said it had busted 21 murder plots, stopped more than 3000kg of drugs from hitting the streets and seized $35 million in cash.
AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw said the organisation had inflicted “maximum damage to serious organised crime”.
“With devastating consequences to those who seek to do harm to Australians and Australia’s interests, and today, Australia is a safer country because of this unprecedented AFP-led operation,” Mr Kershaw added.
More than 4000 law enforcement officers were involved in executing 525 search warrants across Australia.

“Ironside has arrested and charged who we allege are some of the most dangerous criminals to Australia,” Mr Kershaw said.
“We allege they are members of outlaw motorcycle gangs, Australian Mafia, Asian crime syndicates and serious and organised crime groups.
“We allege they’ve been trafficking illicit drugs into Australia at an industrial scale.
“Sadly, criminal gangs are targeting Australia because it is one of the most profitable countries in the world to sell drugs, and for three years, this operation has been covert.
“Australian law enforcement has been arresting and charging alleged offenders and we have prevented tonnes of drugs from coming onshore.”
Mr Kershaw said the sting had resulted in the arrest of dozens of alleged “kingmakers”.
“We have prevented mass shootings in suburbs and frustrated serious and organised crime by seizing their ill-gotten wealth.
“As of today, we have charged 224 alleged offenders, including 525 charges laid.
“Shut down six clandestine laboratories and acted on 21 threats to kill, including saving a family of five … seized 104 firearms and weapons and almost $45 million in cash.
“These figures are likely to increase over the coming days.

Europol launches raids in 'major' operation, also in Germany
The European Union police agency is set to announce further details on what it said was a massive campaign against "the world's foremost criminals."
Police in Germany carried out raids on Monday targeting people suspected of links to organized crime as part of a major international operation by Europol.
The European Union police agency, based in The Hague, Netherlands, said it would hold a press conference on Tuesday concerning what it described as "a major law enforcement action against some of the world's foremost criminals" in more than a dozen countries.
"This operation is the most sophisticated effort to date in disrupting the activities of criminals operating from all four corners of the world,'' Europol said.
Representatives from the FBI and Dutch, Swedish and Australian federal police will also be present, Europol added.
DPA news agency reported that German police raided over a hundred apartments, warehouses and business premises in Monday's raids.
Security forces made arrests in the western city of Wiesbaden. However, the numbers were not immediately available.
What we know about the Europol operation
In Germany, security efforts were particularly intense in Hesse and Frankfurt, according to DPA, with other raids elsewhere in the country.
Reports in Germany claimed that the recent evaluation of encrypted communications used in drug trafficking had provided the impetus for the operation. However, a German Interior Ministry spokesman declined to confirm reports that the raids were linked to the FBI's hacking of encrypted communications networks used by criminals.
"I can confirm that there are currently criminal procedural measures in Germany but also in other countries around the world against people who are suspected of involvement in organized crime," Steve Alter told reporters in Berlin. "These measures are currently ongoing."
Last year, European police cracked an encrypted communications network, known as EncroChat, used by criminal gangs across the continent.
Belgium arrested dozens of suspects earlier this year after police cracked Sky ECC, another encrypted chat system.Authorities then seized over 17 tons of cocaine.

New ZealandPolice say they have dealt a "huge blow" to organised crime after a major trans-national sting resulted in 35 arrests and $3.7 million in assets seized.
But at least one major gang has come out blasting police - going as far as to call the whole operation a smear campaign.
Waikato Mongrel Mob's public relations liaison, Lou Hutchinson, took to Twitter to say: "Lol do you seriously believe all the bullsh*t spin about the Waikato Mongrel Mob Kingdom [sic] this is a total smear campaign driven by the NZ Police, politicians and mainstream media!"
The tweet was in reply to a news story about gang members from the Mob, the Head Hunters and Comancheros being arrested.
Senior members of the Comancheros in Waikato, Mongrel Mob in Waikato and the Head Hunters were among the people arrested overnight.
Police said some of those targeted in the sting were senior members of the Waikato Comancheros and Waikato Mongrel Mob members who allegedly worked with offshore entities to import large quantities of meth and MDMA.
Those class A and class B drugs were to be distributed across New Zealand and which would have reached some of the country's most vulnerable communities.
Police this morning gave new details about a large-scale international police operation that took place throughout New Zealand and overseas in recent days.
Operation Trojan Shield involved three major organised crime investigations and targeted the importation, sale and supply of methamphetamine, as well as money-laundering activities.
More than 300 NZ staff - including National Organised Crime (NOCG), Armed Offenders Squad, Special Tactics Group, Asset Recovery, High Tech Crime and Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Central and Wellington District staff - executed 37 warrants yesterday.
As of last night, 35 people had been arrested - they had appeared at the Auckland District Court and Hamilton District Court this morning facing a range of drug-dealing and money-laundering charges.
More than 900 charges have been laid. There were still outstanding arrests to be made, National Organised Crime Group director Detective Superintendent Greg Williams said.
One of the police operations - dubbed Operation Van - had specifically targeted the trans-national organised crime group linked to the Comancheros.

Here’s why TSMC and Intel keep building foundries in the Arizona desert
Fresh water supply isn't the only consideration for chip fabrication.
Two of the world's leading chip manufacturers—Intel and TSMC—are increasing their US-based manufacturing presence by building new plants in Arizona.
Chip foundries are critically dependent on water, and Arizona is one of the driest states in the nation. Arizona gets only 13.6 inches of annual rainfall (compared with 50-60 inches in most of the Deep South, or 30.3 inches average for the USA as a whole). But as Forrester research director Glenn O'Donnell told CNBC, chip-fabrication plants are similar to indoor swimming pools—"you need a lot to fill it, but you don't have to add much to keep it going."
Counterintuitively, the famously thirsty industry can even improve the local water supply due to a focus on reclamation and purification—Intel has funded 15 water restoration projects in the Grand Canyon State with a goal of restoring 937 million gallons per year, and it expects to reach net positive water use once the projects are completed.
What Arizona lacks in water, it makes up for with overall stability—the state is very seismically stable and does not suffer from hurricanes, with low risks of other natural disasters such as tornadoes to boot. Building chip fabs without such guarantees is possible—for example, Intel has a large presence in Oregon—but chip fabricators on the West Coast must take extreme isolation measures, which Arizona plants don't require.
Arizona's lack of rainfall comes with another benefit—plentiful sunshine, which former Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano once said gives the state the potential to be "the Persian Gulf of solar energy." As of 2018, the state's utility companies generated roughly 5.2 GW—nearly 5 percent of its entire power budget—via solar generation. Distributed (nonutility-scale) generation in Arizona provided another 2.3 GW in the same year.
The human factor, however, may add up to more than the state's natural advantages do. Intel established its presence in Arizona more than 40 years ago and currently employs more than 12,000 people in the state. Arizona local universities responded by establishing "a strong reputation for semiconductor design courses and research," according to Gartner analyst Alan Priestley. And, as Forrester director O'Donnell points out, "the political machinery in Arizona is determined to make the state business friendly… the recent announcements by Intel and TSMC come via a lot of help from federal, state, and local government entities."

The crowd went wild and cheered as the Trump supporters displayed his banner. According to a Boston Red Sox spox, the fan was escorted from Fenway Park by security for violating the park’s policy prohibiting signs. Last week at a New York Mets game, a “Trump Won” banner was displayed during the baseball game.
The banner was similar to the one unfurled at Yankee Stadium just days prior. They both read “Trump Won – Save America”

Wall Street body proposes new rules on short positions, stock loans
The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), Wall Street's self-regulatory body, has proposed changes to its short-interest reporting requirements in a bid to make information more useful.
The proposed changes to Rule 4560 would increase the frequency of short-interest reports from twice a month to weekly or even daily. The change would require clearing firms to report synthetic short exposure - bets made against shares via derivatives - in firm and customer accounts. The move highlights intensifying scrutiny of short-selling, betting against shares to profit if they fall, amid ongoing volatility in"meme stocks."These are driven by retail investors banding together to squeeze hedge funds that bet against GameStop(GME.N) AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc(AMC.N) and other stocks.
The changes would also require clearing firms to report to FINRA certain information on the stock loans that facilitate short bets "for regulatory purposes, but with an eye toward eventual public dissemination," amid other changes, said the watchdog. The proposal was released late Friday. "These potential changes could improve the usefulness of short sale-related information to FINRA, other regulators, investors and other market participants," FINRA said. FINRA is an industry-financed self-regulatory organization overseen by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The proposed changes, which are subject to public consultation, would likely increase the burden on clearing firms and prime brokers, who bear the primary responsibility for short interest reporting under the current requirements, FINRA said.

Where it’s going: We need a company to develop vaccine passport system, and an authority to manage it.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has an urgent need to secure the services of a global organization (the “Contractor”) with knowledge of and expertise in biometrics. The Agency requires this organization to assist with the immediate establishment of an Office of Biometrics and Identity Management and to work with the Agency in researching, planning for and rapidly developing a strategy and roadmap related to the use of Digital solutions enabled by supporting technologies in biometrics, in response to the COVID 19 situation and other operational priorities. The Contractor will bring knowledge, capabilities, and experience to support CBSA’s urgent need to establish a biometric strategy, biometric foundation and ultimately a Biometrics Authority (Centre of Excellence). Specifically, the “contractor” will assist the CBSA with the development of a comprehensive approach and plan to manage, evolve and adapt in using biometrics to deliver the mission of the agency while considering our interrelationship and joint ventures with other federal government departments and agencies and our international partners.
Also, what is the “Office of Biometrics and Identity Management” that this refers to? Who will run it? Who will have access to this data? Will the information be used for commercial or research purposes. There are of course similar questions concerning this “Biometrics Authority”.
